Sai Kirupa Special School provides specialized education and vocational training to children and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other learning disabilities. For their new campus in Tirupur, the school envisioned a center focused on the holistic development of students, fostering independence and self-reliance. The design of the campus reflects a thoughtful response to the diverse needs of its users, creating an environment that nurtures growth. Since the school operates under a charitable trust, donor funding plays a key role in realizing the project. As a result, the design needed to be flexible to allow for incremental, phased construction, contingent on the funding.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The building's design across two floors creates distinct functional zones for various uses while enabling the incremental construction and swift operationalization of each phase. The ground floor houses the day school and has been completed in three phases. The use of structural expansion joints facilitated these phases, with each section becoming functional as soon as it was completed. This phased approach enabled feedback from users, allowing the design to be fine-tuned based on real-life experience. The first floor comprises residential dormitories and classrooms for students with lesser dependency needs. This has been undertaken as the next phase.Save this picture!Save this picture!Responding to the climate, the building's layout and orientation is designed to maximize the north and south facades, where the direct solar heat gain is reduced through simple shading. The simple rectangular plan is further deployed to create a clear and navigable design for its users. Organized around a central open space, the building is laid out into north and south wings. A central bridge between the two wings creates two smaller courtyards and doubles up as a stagefor the front courtyard, which serves as a small amphitheater, with easy visitor access. Thelarger rear courtyard provides outdoor play and therapy spaces for students. Similarly, the administrative offices are located near the front, with direct access from the entrance. The more private student areasclassrooms, therapy rooms, and caretaker spacesare positioned deeper within the building.Save this picture! At every level, thoughtful and functional transition spaces are worked into the plan, in line with thesensory needs of the students. The arcaded passages provide a transition from the open courtyard to the inside, while also becoming an edge with benches for indirect participation in the play activity. The long passagebreaks into smaller alcoves at the entrance of each classroom, creating pause points and providing strategic storage for bags, footwear etc.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The north wing contains self-sufficient units of eight classrooms each, designed to meet both academic and personal care needs. Since many students with ASD require toilet training, each classroom unit includes a dedicated toilet with adjoining spaces for changing and cleaning. Jaali walls in these areas ensure ample light and ventilation while maintaining privacy for children. The south wing houses larger therapy rooms and a dining hall, supporting students' developmental needs. Save this picture!Circulation paths throughout the building are enhanced with experiential design elements, including colored tile inserts that serve as visual cues, encouraging movement and motor skill development. These flooring inserts along the passage prompt students to hop and skip, enhancing both physical and cognitive growth. At the entrance of each classroom, vibrant Tangram-patterned pause points are paired with tiled inverted arch benches, creating memorable landmarks that aid navigation, through a distinct color scheme.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! In the harsh Tiruppur climate, both courtyards are covered with tensile fabric shade sails, to provide comfortable open spaces for play and gathering. The rear courtyard is designed to foster both structured and unstructured play, with sensory paths and landscape elements that stimulate students' senses in a calm manner. A bridge across a small pond promotes balance through play, while areas for group and individual activities encourage flexible interaction. Traditional play equipment, such as swings and slides, complement the sensory features. Save this picture! The choice of materials and structural details responds to the local soil conditions and seismic requirements. Stones and boulders found on-site are used for the foundation, while the gravelly soil is utilized to make handmade adobe blocks. The exposed masonry of these blocks creates a muted, earthy palette that offers a soothing visual experience. The rough texture of the walls, combined with the undulating jack arch ceiling, helps reduce ambient noise, providing a calm, sensory-friendly environment for students. The site execution team's attention to detail has been critical in incorporating many finer features envisioned in the design, to create a truly holistic experience in the school.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Tiruppur, IndiaLocation to be used only as a reference. In 2015, a group of visionary artists, led by Ahmed Mater, mobilized against the limiting currents of the cultural practices of their time. They scouted for possible areas around Riyadh to assemble a space for creatives and discovered a declining industrial district in the historic seat of the Saudi State, Ad Diriyah. Once a gritty and bustling light-industrial area, the 'JAX Creative District' was reimagined as a meeting place for creatives and a celebration of the town's rich and varied history.Save this picture! With its strategic location along the banks of Wadi Hanifa, Central Arabia's fertile valley, JAX has quickly become the nation's hub for the creative industries. Hosting the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, SAMOCA, and Noor Riyadh, while simultaneously offering subsidized spaces for artists, designers, and makers. Following the success of the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, the district's inaugural project, Bricklab established a strong relationship with JAX. In 2021, they were commissioned to develop the public realm guidelines for the Foster & Partners masterplan, and later in 2022, they won a competition to design a series of warehouses and public plazas.Save this picture!Save this picture! With a hundred warehouses and a set of different plazas within the street grid, the district was planned around principles of rehabilitation and adaptive reuse. Influenced by Wadi Hanifa's natural landscape informed the guidelines of the industrial site through materiality, color palette, and landscaping. The architectural language set for the district was based on a subtle combination of industrial materials, mindful paving, and a sensitivity to the functional requirements of creative production. At an urban scale, a set of pedestrian thoroughfares and public plazas were carved out from the strictly utilitarian assembly of structures throughout the site to establish nodes of public activity. These new plazas, sidewalks, and intersections are defined by landscaped pockets of irregular geometries developed by landscape architects studiolibani.Save this picture! To establish an ecological continuity, while providing a salient relief from the hot and dry climate, they curated a palette of native flora from sites along Wadi Hanifa. These urban interventions encouraged the development of some of the neighborhood's most vibrant public spaces, hosting seasonal artistic interventions, cafes, and temporary markets.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!A set of formal operations on the typical warehouse was developed to address programmatic requirements, urban context, and development guidelines. These operations yielded a set of new typologies that established a subtle presence in the district. Some warehouses were rotated perpendicular to the street to create thoroughfares within the urban fabric. Others had portions of their facades hollowed out to connect the structures to the street sectionally. Additionally, a set of new, scaled-down sheds were inserted into the urban fabric to serve as F&B outlets and small shops that animate the street.Save this picture! The subtlety of the typological approach to the architectural interventions yielded a subdued environment that leaves room for different participants from the creative community to animate the district over time. Since its inception, JAX Creative District has become one of Riyadh's burgeoning neighborhoods, bringing together a once-fragmented creative network into a thriving community space.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Diriyah, Saudi ArabiaLocation to be used only as a reference. This Official Zelda-Themed Wireless Controller Is Only $25 At Amazon For Black Friday
PowerA Wireless Switch Controller - Zelda: Sworn Protector $25 (was $45) See at Amazon The Legend of Zelda fans can score a pretty sweet deal on a wireless Nintendo Switch controller themed around the iconic action-adventure series. As part of Amazon's Black Friday Sale, PowerA's Legend of Zelda: Sworn Protector Bluetooth Controller is discounted to only $25, which is the best price yet for the $45 controller. PowerA Wireless Switch Controller - Zelda: Sworn Protector $25 (was $45) Officially licensed by Nintendo, the Sworn Protector controller design is themed around Link's best-known weapons. The Hylian Shield and Master Sword from Ocarina of Time are emblazoned on the left grip. The off-white base color is accented by blue face buttons and triggers that match Link's shield. The red Hylian Crest in the center of the controller is a nice touch. As for its technical features, the controller has two back buttons that can be remapped on the fly, which is a nice perk, especially in this price range. Since it connects via Bluetooth, you can also use it on PC and mobile devices. The controller does have an unusual quirk, though: It's powered by AA batteries. Your first pair is included, and you should get roughly 30 hours of playtime before you need to swap them out. Plus, you could always opt for rechargeable batteries, such as this Energizer kit with four batteries included for only $15 (50% off).Third-party Switch controllers don't have NFC readers for Amiibo or HD rumble--this controller lacks rumble altogether. And while some PowerA Switch controllers have motion controls, this one does not. See at Amazon If you want all of those features, you'll need to opt for Nintendo's Switch Pro Controller, which is on sale for $50 at multiple major retailers as part of Nintendo's official Black Friday deals. The Pro Controller is almost never discounted from its $70 price, so this best-ever deal is worth considering, too. You can also grab a pair of Neon Red and Blue Joy-Con Controllers for $60, down from $80.
