WWW.CNET.COMGoogle Pixel Buds Pro 2 Get the $50 Price Chop I Wanted for Black FridayDespite their improvements, when I reviewed Google's Pixel Buds Pro 2 a few months back, I was a little disappointed that they cost $29 more than than their predecessor. But I also knew that come Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 would surely be on sale, and indeed they are, hitting their lowest price to date at $180 or $50 off their list price of $230. That comes pretty close to the deals we've been seeing on the Apple'sAirPods Pro 2, which are selling for $170 on Amazon.Read more: Best wireless earbuds of 2024 While I did try the Pixel Buds Pro 2 with an iPhone 16 Pro -- and yes, they do work fine with Apple products, albeit with a more limited feature set -- they're really designed for Pixel device users (who get integrated support for Google's Gemini AI assistant) and Android users in general. I appreciated the smaller design, an upgrade that should address the fit issues many folks with smaller ears had with the original Buds Pro's design. And both the sound and noise-canceling have been improved along with slightly better voice-calling performance. Watch this: Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 Hands-On: A Big Upgrade 04:36 If you can get a tight seal, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 are excellent earbuds. Apple users are better off with the AirPods Pro 2, and Samsung Galaxy device owners should probably opt for the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, which are on sale for $190. Despite their higher price, they're certainly worth strong consideration from Pixel device users and Android users in general, particularly when they're discounted.Hey, did you know?CNET Deals texts are free, easy and save you money. The Pixel Buds Pro 2 are featured on our list of best wireless earbuds and best noise-canceling earbuds. I rated them an 8.6, and my full review has all the details you need to know about them. WWW.CNET.COMSpaceX Aims for 25 Starship Launches in 2025SpaceX is looking to increase the launch frequency of its Starship rockets to 25 launches each year starting in 2025.This would mark a dramatic increase from the 5 annual launches currently permitted at its Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas. The Federal Aviation Administration recently released an environmental assessment draft of SpaceX's proposal to boost the number of annual launches, as it continues to ramp up its test flights. The company's massive SpaceX rocket is at the center of its ambitions to launch crew and cargo trips to the moon and Mars. It recently conducted two launches within two months, for a total of 6 times to date.Although the launches would start at the company's Starbase, landings could happen on a floating platform in various locations, including the Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific Ocean or the Indian Ocean, according to the draft. To operate at a faster cadence, however, SpaceX must obtain a new license or a license modification from the FAA to launch and land Starship, as well as its Super Heavy booster. The original launch frequency was decided in 2022.The FAA will have to review the potential environmental impact of accommodating more launches, including impact on wildlife, air emissions and water quality and noise levels. Some environmentalists believe the launches are impacting the local area. Each launch releases thousands of gallons of industrial wastewater into the environment. SpaceX has already faced more than $150,000 in fees for violations, according to an NPR report. The request for more launches reflects SpaceX CEO Elon Musk's ambitions to launch hundreds of Starship missions during this decade, including a surge during President Trump's administration. The company is also working on a Starship-related lander for NASA's Artemis III mission to the moon, which will send the first woman and person of color to the moon. That mission is scheduled for September 2026, following delays caused by funding issues and technical challenges.0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views

WWW.SCIENTIFICAMERICAN.COMHow Humor Can Help You Get through Hard TimesNovember 25, 20243 min readHow Humor Takes the Edge off Hard TimesWhen life feels difficult, humor can be a coping mechanism that relieves stress and offers the breathing room to keep going, scientists sayBy Meghan Bartels Artystarty/Getty ImagesThree psychologists walk into a bar to compose a witty toast to the power of humor. Or rather I picked up the phone and called each of them about the subject. (Im just terrible at telling jokes.) But these psychologists do genuinely want people to understand the role that humor can play in helping one deal with stress, anger, fear, anxiety and other difficult emotions. Sometimes, that means purposefully embracing humor when things are going well, shoring up defenses against hard times to come. And sometimes it can mean spontaneously laughing when you want to cry or cracking an absurdist joke when it feels like the sky is falling and Earth is on fire. There is this autopilot, unconscious way that many people engage humor without thinking about it, says Steven Sultanoff, a clinical psychologist and an adjunct professor at Pepperdine University. It is a strategic coping mechanism, but its not a conscious one.To psychologists, a coping mechanism is any kind of behavior or thought someone uses to deal with stress, says Janet Gibson, a psychologist and a professor emerita at Grinnell College. Not all of these strategies are beneficial, she notes: drinking or binge eating, for example, are more dangerous coping mechanisms. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today. But humor is indeed a powerful way of handling stressors, which activate how we feel, how we think, how we actand our physiology, Sultanoff says. Humor does exactly the same things, just in a different direction.Stress may make someone feel anxious or angry; humor replaces that feeling with a moment of joy, lightness, surprise or connection. In many situations, when youre experiencing humor, you cannot experience distressing emotions, Sultanoff says. These emotions dissolve. Stress may also narrow someones thinking about a situation, whereas humor taps into creativity that can enable a perspective shift. And of course, theres the physical embodiment of humor: laughter. With it comes better breathing, muscle relaxation and a higher pain tolerance, potentially caused by the release of endorphins. The stress is there; you just dont feel it as much, Gibson says.Humor is, moreover, inherently social. We crave connection, especially when we are feeling heightened levels of stress, says Michele Tugade, a psychologist at Vassar College.Of course, humor isnt foolproof: making the wrong joke the wrong way is just as likely to increase stress and disconnection. Mean-spirited or disparaging humor actually causes people to be further apart and increases division, Tugade says.Humor can arise during stress without a person making any effort to evoke itor even necessarily understanding where it is coming from or why. But humor can also be cultivated, Sultanoff says, adding that he himself uses it as a conscious way of lightening the mood and building connections with people around him. He says that that he travels with a clown nose to facilitate finding fun in lifes mundane moments. Joyful use of humor builds psychological antibodies, he says.Notwithstanding the occasional clown nose, embracing the power of humor doesnt mean subscribing to toxic positivity. The point is not to never feel difficult emotions, Tugade says. Stress is there for a reason, and its to call your attention to a problem that needs to be solved, she says. When you experience a negative emotion like sadness or anger or frustration, its important to recognize why thats there. Turning to humor too soon may prevent someone from processing emotions in a healthy way, increasing stress rather than decreasing it, she adds.Instead consider expressing humor in moderation and as a moment of relief amid a seemingly constant onslaught of grim headlines and hard feelings. Youre not denying that there is some trouble in the world and theres great despair and grief, Tugade says. Its giving yourself a break. And we all need a little break.0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views

WWW.SCIENTIFICAMERICAN.COMWhen a Nation Embraces a False RealityOpinionNovember 25, 20245 min readWhen a Nation Embraces a False RealityA renowned psychiatrist and activist compares Trumps election to other pivotal historical moments in which the ultimate victim was truth itselfBy Robert Jay Lifton Rob Dobi/Getty ImagesDaniel Patrick Moynihan once said that Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts. That's a simple, profound and true statement.Moynihans words have particular relevance for our country and society after Donalds Trumps shocking 2024 election victory. To put things directly, Trump was able to win because he and his followers convinced most of the country to believe in his falsification of factual truth.Factual truth is distinct from ideology or bias or personal opinions of any kind. Rather, for example, the factual truth is that my name is Robert Jay Lifton, I am a research psychiatrist who studies the psychological roots of war and political violence, and I am writing an article for Scientific American. This is a declarative sentence that makes an irrefutable point. That irrefutability is the source of the appeal of factual truth. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today. In contrast, when factual truth breaks downwith a denial, say, of the outcome of a legitimate electionthere can be a rush of factual falsehoods inundating a whole society. That is because factual untruth requires continuous additional untruths to cover over and sustain the original one. And the defense of continuous falsehoods relies on more than repetition; it relies on intimidation and can readily lead to violence. Philip Roth had both the falsehood and the violence in mind when he spoke of the indigenous American berserk. What results from this situation is malignant normality, societys routinization of falsehood and destructive behavior. That can produce psychic numbing, the inability or disclination to feel, which can reach the point of immobilization.Children in Hiroshima one year after the bomb.Bettmann Archive/Getty ImagesMalignant normality has much overlap with the term sanewashing. That term does connect with a wider audience but can become glib and vague. Malignant normality, in contrast, has a greater suggestion of a psychological experience on the part of individuals and groups.Given how widespread falsehoods and lying have become, any reference to the value of truth telling can seem counterintuitive. But factual truth telling can bring psychological relief to the teller who can disengage from malignant falsehoods. In this way, truth-telling helps diminish psychic numbing.I have also emphasized in my work how much we human beings are meaning-hungry creatures. That is radically true for survivors of war, nuclear or conventional, or other extreme trauma. For any such meaning to be convincing it must be based in factual truth. It is wrong and misleading to speak of us as a post-truth society. Rather we are a society that is continuously engaged in a struggle for truth telling, which can be a profoundly difficult enterprise, as the 2024 U.S. elections made all too clear. To cope with the catastrophe of a second Trump administration and counter the serial lying, we require every imaginable means of truth-telling. And the truth-telling itself becomes an expression of activist resistance. In each of my research studies, I have sought to bear witness to the truths I encountered. The principle of truth telling was central to all of my work. In Hiroshima, for instance, my work took the form of a scientific interview study of hibakusha, the survivors of the atomic bomb. But I found it necessary to add the broader ethical commitment to tell the story of the bombs annihilative human impact. In that way I had to become a witnessing professional, which meant not only revealing the full Hiroshima catastrophe but combatting the nuclearism that led to it, the embrace of these weapons to solve human problems and the willingness to use them.Truth was at the heart of my study of antiwar Vietnam veterans and their antiwar movement. The veterans I interviewed came to find their meaning of the war in its meaninglessness. Indeed, Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) affirmed that meaninglessness as well as their committed effort to oppose their own war.Hannah Arendt, the renowned philosopher known for her study of totalitarianism, noted that it relied on the organized lying of groups. She pointed out that leaders like Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels promoted what they themselves called the big lie, not only to suppress their people but to control their sense of reality. In that way Nazi leaders could seek the ownership of reality by achieving widespread national belief in falsehood. There is a sense in which all of Germany became a mystical cult with Hitler its guru and savior. Truth-telling was also at the center of my own study of the murderous behavior of Nazi doctors. There is a certain cultlike parallel in Trumps claim to omniscience, believed in by his hardcore followers, and his continuous claims of the ownership of reality.Although they lost the election, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz touched a national nerve when they began using the word weird to describe Trump and his running mate J.D. Vance. This was because it brought us collectively back to a democracy that functions on factual truth. A weird person is one you should never follow because if you do, you take on some of that weirdness, the loss of reality and overall obliviousness to factual truth. That becomes very dangerous to a society facing planetary threats such as nuclear war and global warming. Weirdness threatens our security, individually and nationally. But rather than avoidance, the election sustained and extended our dangerous participation in weirdness. In sharp contrast to the serial falsehoods of Trump and Vance, the Harris-Walz team sought to be truth-telling throughout the election process and constantly called out those lies. To be sure, Harris and Walz could exaggerate claims, leave out uncomfortable changes that each underwent in their advocacies, and avoided difficult topics. But they talked about factual matters and factual possibilities. The election was an ultimate test of the amount of factual truth our society could manage. Not enough, it turned out. But even with the election defeat, our society still hungers for those factual truths.Trumpists are likely to continue their creation of atrocity-producing situations, whether having to do with ungoverning, climate, threatened violence, or harmful policies around the lingering planetary threat of COVID. But we are not helpless before them.In response to my study of Nazi doctors, some friends would ask me Now what do you think of your fellow human beings? They were expecting me to say, Not very much. But my answer was that we could go either way. We could perish from our catastrophes or survive them by making use of our better angels (in Lincolns words) that provide us with sufficient survivor wisdom to keep our species going. We are not condemned by a death drive to destroy ourselves; nor is it certain that we will sustain a truth-centered, life-enhancing ethos. But we have the capacity for that ethos, which provides a strong source of hope. The award of the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to the hibakusha group Nihon Hidankyo for its antinuclear activism is a powerful assertion of such hope. So was Harris insistence that, though she conceded the election, she would never give up struggle for freedom, for opportunity, for fairness and the dignity of all people. We cannot expect that we will eliminate falsehood entirely. There is no absolute moment of realized factual truth. Rather we are engaged in a continual struggle, as individual people and as a country, on behalf of the decency, necessity and satisfaction of truth-telling.This is an opinion and analysis article, and the views expressed by the author or authors are not necessarily those of Scientific American.0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views

WWW.EUROGAMER.NETDF Weekly: Silent Hill 2 patched on PS5 Pro - and PSSR is gone from the performance modeDF Weekly: Silent Hill 2 patched on PS5 Pro - and PSSR is gone from the performance modeThe 60fps mode is improved, but the 30fps quality mode still has PSSR problems.Image credit: Bloober Team Blog by Richard Leadbetter Technology Editor, Digital Foundry Published on Nov. 25, 2024 The arrival of a new working week can be pretty bleak, but hey - at least you have a brand new edition of DF Direct Weekly to watch or listen to. Despite the colossal workload we have, there's a huge amount of discussion this week - from an extended chat about the strengths and weaknesses of Sony's PSSR upscaling through to a look at Assassin's Creed Syndicate's 60fps patch and some quick impressions on the new PlayStation Portal update. This Direct is longer than usual, because Bloober Team released a patch for Silent Hill 2 on PS5 Pro after filming, aimed at improving graphical problems - described in depth in Tom Morgan's coverage last week. So, has the game improved? The answer is yes, but it seems that the route forward was simply to roll back on PSSR support, dropping back to Epic's TSR upscaler - in the 60fps mode at least. PSSR remains in effect in the 30fps quality mode, so that's still presenting some issues.Let's recap on the issues as they stood with patch 1.05. In providing Pro support, Bloober Team shifted from the use of Epic's 'in house' upscaling solution - TSR (temporal super resolution) in favour of Sony's machine learning based alternative, PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution). In image quality terms, while PSSR has some advantages, they were significantly outweighed by the negatives - intrusive flickering in Lumen reflections, inconsistent global illumination and general 'noise' problems. Disocclusion issues were also problematic, with objects noticeably leaving visual artefacts when the camera moved. We went as far as to say that the Pro version of Silent Hill 2 looked worse than the standard PS5 version as a consequence.Got 160 minutes or so spare to hear about the latest gaming and technology news? DF Direct Weekly #190 is just for you.Watch on YouTube0:00:00 Introduction0:01:05 News 1: PS5 Pro PSSR issues analyzed0:29:50 News 2: Silent Hill 2 patch tested: PSSR dropped!0:39:02 News 3: STALKER 2 suffers launch woes0:51:04 News 4: Assassins Creed Syndicate gets current-gen patch1:02:23 News 5: Sony in talks to acquire From Software1:12:34 News 6: PlayStation Portal updated with cloud streaming support1:22:57 News 7: Callisto Protocol PS5 Pro patch released!1:32:36 Supporter Q1: Are there any Nvidia graphics cards for $400 or less that are good deals?1:42:29 Supporter Q2: When there are glaring performance issues in a game, what do you chalk them up to?1:50:24 Supporter Q3: Why do games often offer so many console modes when one of them is clearly optimal?1:57:13 Supporter Q4: Are you feeling Unreal Engine 5 fatigue?2:01:29 Supporter Q5: Will Microsoft bring Xbox backwards compatibility to PC?2:10:39 Supporter Q6: Which vaporware is better: Blast Processing or the power of the cloud?Bloober Team's solution for this problem is pretty straightforward - to roll back on the PSSR support in the lower resolution performance mode, re-introducing TSR. In using this strategy, the game now reverts to the kind of image quality seen on the standard PlayStation 5 version of the game - and that's absolutely fine. We can't rule out dynamic resolution but it seems that performance mode is upscaling from something in the region of 1008p. There is a small frame-rate advantage over the standard PlayStation 5 rendition of the game, but it's not as big as expected - just a few fps higher. Perhaps this is explained by the standard PS5 running at 900p, with Pro operating with an improved pixel count.Beyond that, there's not much to tell the two versions of the game apart - they look quite similar. That said, there does seem to be a change in the way global illumination presents on the new patch - it looks significantly lighter than it does on the standard PlayStation 5. It's difficult to tell whether that's intentional or not but it's only really noticeable via direct A to B comparisons. All of which leaves us with the quality mode, which is in a very strange place right now. We can't discern much in the way of differences against the existing 1.05 code, meaning that PSSR is still in place and all of the existing problems we've documented are unchanged. What this also means is that - perversely - the image quality of the performance mode now using TSR is significantly better than the 30fps quality mode. That's a somewhat stark appraisal of the situation, but it is what it is. We hope that Bloober Team have effectively triaged Silent Hill 2 - prioritising a fix for the performance mode in terms of the distracting PSSR issues, with further optimisations to come. We'd like to see the frame-rate dips in the performance mode fully addressed and image quality fixed on the 30fps quality mode.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. The discussion with Silent Hill 2 is our second news story of the week, with a 28 minute chat on PSSR taking point as the lead topic. While Silent Hill 2 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor have exhibited what we'd describe as egregious PSSR problems and shouldn't have shipped in the state they did, it's clear that there are a number of games where the technology is not delivering as it should. The idea is basically to see PSSR replace FSR 2 or Epic's TSR as the upscaler of choice, where the problems are manifest - especially at lower resolution. Now, to be clear, PSSR is capable of some excellent results, as you've seen in our coverage over the weeks, but there are clearly problems. In upscaling from resolutions under 1080p, there are image quality issues - as seen in Alan Wake 2, for example. However, we've also seen challenges when certain ray tracing effects are plumbed into PSSR. Again, Silent Hill 2 and Jedi Survivor bear mention, but Dragon's Dogma 2 is also presenting very noticeable issues - and has done since its debut at Sony's gameplay press event a while back. Looking back now, it's interesting to note that of all the problematic titles we've seen so far, Dragon's Dogma 2 was the only one that made it through to the hands-on events. So, what happens now? Bloober Team has put out what you might call a mitigation for the issues in Silent Hill 2, while Respawn says it is aware of the issues with Jedi: Survivor - as you'd hope bearing in mind how glaringly obvious they are. However, on a more general level, we need to accept that in entering the machine learning upscaling space, Sony is taking on industry juggernauts like Nvidia and indeed Intel, both of whom have shipped accomplished solutions. Up against DLSS, PSSR is up against best-of-the-best technology, iterated on over years by some of the most experienced, talented engineers in the business. Some might say that PSSR accomplishing what it has in a first generation product is a good achievement - and a great foundation for the updates to offer. That said, it's clear right now that PSSR in its current state requires careful integration - and it can't be seen as a 'fire and forget' solution to FSR, no matter how much we might want it to be. Sony will almost certainly get to the point where PSSR becomes a must-use foundational technology for PS5 Pro and whatever comes next, but this is just the start of the process.0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views
