  • Salesforce stock price is surging today. Here are 3 reasons why
    www.fastcompany.com
One of the most-watched stocks in premarket trading this morning is Salesforce (NYSE: CRM). Shares are currently surging before the opening bell after the software giant reported its Q3 results for fiscal year 2025. As of the time of this writing, CRM shares are up nearly 13% to $373.40 per share.Whats behind Salesforces stock surge? Here are the three most likely influencing factors.Strong Q3 total revenue growthAny way you look at it, Salesforce had pleasing third-quarter results. Here are its most salient figures for its Q3 2025:Total quarterly revenue: $9.44 billion (up 8% year-over-year)Subscription & Support Revenue: $8.88 Billion (up 9% YOY)Earnings per share (non-GAAP Diluted): $2.41To put that all-important revenue figure into further context, CNBC notes that Wall Street analysts were expecting $9.34 billion. The actual figure of $9.44 billion gives Salesforce a clear beat. The company also posted a non-GAAP Operating Margin of 33.1%.Investors love to see quarterly revenue growth, especially in the high single-digits or more, and it appears that Salesforces growth in Q3 is at least a contributing factor in the companys rising stock price this morning. Yet there is perhaps a more significant one, too.A rosy picture for AI agentsRight now, Wall Street really cares about AI, seeing it as a key growth point for most companies in the years ahead. And when it comes to artificial intelligence, Salesforce gave investors a reason to feel good. The company revealed that its AI chatbot offering, called Agentforce, is seeing strong demand. While AI chatbots like ChatGPT try to offer as broad a range of knowledge for the everyperson as possible, many feel that AI chatbots that are specifically focused on one area of expertisesay, customer service or sales managementare what businesses will be searching for as they seek to leverage artificial intelligence in their workflows.Saleforces Agentforce lets businesses deploy hyper-focused AI chatbots designed to help them in various areas, such as marketing, sales, customer service, and more.As noted by GuruFocus, Salesforce revealed that it closed over 200 Agentforce sales in just one week, which indicated strong demand for the AI product. Salesforce also revealed that it was hiring 1,400 new account executives to deal with the growing demand for Agentforce.Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff specifically called out the companys nascent AI platform in its Q3 press release, boasting, Agentforce, our complete AI system for enterprises built into the Salesforce Platform, is at the heart of a groundbreaking transformation. The rise of autonomous AI agents is revolutionizing global labor, reshaping how industries operate and scale. With Agentforce, were not just witnessing the futurewere leading it, unleashing a new era of digital labor for every business and every industry. But Benioff went even further than that. As noted by CNBC, Benioff revealed that he recently ruptured his Achilles tendon while on vacation in French Polynesiaan incident in which Benioff decided to turn into an AI chatbot sale pitch of sorts.Benioff said he was disappointed that the treating hospital did not offer AI agents to help him schedule follow-up appointments. That is the message to our customers, which is how are you going to give some of your people a break, let them get back to their strategic work, let them focus on what really matters, he said.A better-than-expected high-end Q4 guidanceA final reason why Salesforce shares are likely surging this morning is because of the companys guidance for its current fourth quarter. Salesforce said it expects Q4 2025 sales of between $9.90 billion and $10.10 billion. Analysts had been expecting about $10.05 billion, meaning the high-end of Salesforces guidance beats that. However, this is one more external factor that could be helping Salesforce shares this morning as well. Citi has updated its price target for CRM shares from $368 to $390, citing strong momentum at the company, according to Investing.com.As of the time of this writing, Salesforce shares are hovering around $373.40. Shares had closed at $331.43 yesterday before the company announced its Q3 results after the closing bell. As of yesterdays close, CRM shares were up nearly 26% year-to-date.

  • This CEO sells low-cost drugs, and he says Big Pharma might not be the true adversary
    www.fastcompany.com
For many Americans, pharmaceutical drugs are too expensiveand thanks to a system of complex and tedious bureaucracy, any effort for meaningful reform has been futile. Cost Plus Drugs wants to change that. With the help of co-founder Mark Cuban, CEO Alex Oshmyansky is radically re-engineering the pharma marketplace and dramatically cutting the price for many prescription drugs. Oshmyansky shares why Big Pharma might not be the true adversary, how Y Combinator got his company off the ground, and his hopes for helping to change healthcare for the masses. This is an abridged transcript of an interview from Rapid Response, hosted by the former editor-in-chief of Fast Company Bob Safian. From the team behind the Masters of Scale podcast, Rapid Response features candid conversations with todays top business leaders navigating real-time challenges. Subscribe to Rapid Response wherever you get your podcasts to ensure you never miss an episode.Cost Plus Drugs sells thousands of drugs at cost, plus $15 for shipping, right? Thats the plus part? So, we do our true cost, and thats the big innovation, if you want to call it that, about our company. We reveal what we purchase all the drugs for. We add a 15% margin for ourselves, a $5 fee to pay our pharmacist, $5 for shipping and handling, and then thats the total cost of the drug.Im onstatin. A statin prescription can cost $200 somewhere else. You guys, its like $5. How do you make that work financially? One of the big things thats unknown about our pharmaceutical distribution chain is theres effectively a cartel of three companies, these so-called pharmacy benefit managers. The way they do this is very, very complicated, but the bottom line is they buy all the drugs, they mark them up as much as they want, and then they resell them. They accomplish that through effectively being a form of payment processor for insurance companies. But, yeah, if you just go around the system, sometimes the price reductions can be radical. Its estimated at least 30 to 40% of all drug spending goes to the pockets of the pharmacy benefit managers. There are drugs we sell on our site for $20 or $30 for a months supply that if you tried to get through your insurance with a high deductible plan, you would be asked to pay $3,000 to $4,000 out of pocket. Its insane. Its criminal. And thats not hyperbole. They will say, actually, the list price of this drug is $10,000 for a months supply. So actually, were getting you an amazing deal at $3,000. Thats a 70% discount. They say, How amazing are we? Meanwhile, if you go to the drug manufacturer and just say, can we buy this from you? They say, yeah. The true price is closer to $20 to $30 for that same months supply. We are very proud of actually exposing that practice. The Senate actually questioned the CEOs of the big PBMs on it. And now theres an office of the inspector general investigation. Now, Cost Plus Drugs is officially called Mark Cubans Cost Plus. You came up with this idea. You didnt know Mark? And you just sort of cold-call emailed?I originally started the company actually as a 501c3 non-profit. I went out sort of trying to raise funds for it for the better part of three, four years and failed spectacularly, did not raise a dime beyond what I put in myself. Eventually, I applied to Y Combinator for financing. The interview committee, actually Sam Altman, was on mine.Sam said, We like what youre doing. Wed like to get behind it. Do not think youll be able to raise enough as a nonprofit. If you reincorporate as a public benefit corporation, so a for-profit company, but with a registered public mission with the state, well invest in you like we would in any other company. And after three, four years of no success, I was like, okay, whatever, lets give it a shot.I am a little bit embarrassed now to say I took corporate governance advice from Sam Altman, but it worked in my case. I was able to raise a small seed round, a little over a million dollars, which is not a lot in pharma dollars, but enough to get kicked up and off the ground. And yeah, just totally on a whim. A couple of months after that, I saw Mark Cuban had a public Gmail. I was like, wow. I shot him a line, and surprise, surprise, Mark is incredible on email. He does respond to everything. We shouldnt say that to everyone thats listening here.He doesnt mind: mcuban@gmail.com. He will get back to you.I have no idea how he does it because Im not that good at email. And like, what excuse do I have? But yeah, he got back in like five minutes, and we had a brief dialogue, and he invested a small amount of money to start with, and obviously became much more invested on several different levels.Effectively the company became a very different thing after Mark got really heavily involved, and now hes a true operational co-founder. He is very, very involved. So hes, hes not just kibitzing from the sidelines while hes doing Shark Tank? No, hes taking customer service calls. Hes a manic workaholic. Anytime I email him about any issue day or night, six in the morning, two a.m., within five to ten minutes, theres a response. And yeah, he is deeply into the weeds on everything from website design and coding to our manufacturing plant and operations. Were communicating every hour about pretty much everything that happens. He wants to, what he says is, F up the industry. You wanna do that too? Youre just not willing to use those words?Im not a billionaire, I cant get away with it, but we get letters, emails every day from people who are like, Hey, I was having to skip meals to afford my medicine. I thought I was going to die because I just couldnt get my chemo. I thought I would have to sell my house. Real people who were being asked to pay $3,000 out of pocket for their chemotherapy, for their multiple sclerosis medication, and suddenly we can offer it for $20.The public narrative about Big Pharma is sort of like Big Pharma is bad, is ripping you off, and if Im hearing you right, youre sort of like, its not Big Pharma, its just these PBMs that are in the middle.Big Pharma is certainly no angels, like theyre not innocents in all of this, but at least they make the drugs. When I talk to a big pharma CEO, theyre like, We do all the R&D, we take all the flack from the public. We take all the legal liability, we do all the manufacturing, which I can vouch for is hard. Like, why do these guys get 30% off the top? Thats nuts. So theres actually no love lost between Pharma and the Pharmacy Benefit Managers. And in some ways, the rap against Big Pharma is kind of unfair.A great example, actually. When they came up with the recombinant insulins, they were very expensive, but the price did drop pretty substantially. And Big Pharma was selling insulin for about $20 a vial. But there were people literally dying because they couldnt afford their insulin at the list price of $400 a vial. And yeah, that was pretty much entirely the fault of the PBMs.When you see how far Cost Plus Drugs has gone, its gone pretty far pretty fast, and where you sort of hope it will land, how far along that journey are you?Are you 30% along the journey? Are you 3% along the journey?I think 3% is fair. Weve still got a long way to go. I remember Sam was just starting OpenAI around the time that I was in Y Combinator. And he had a thing that its hard for humans to conceptualize scaling laws, like how quickly if you grow exponentially, it winds up adding up over time, like the human brains just not programmed to be able to understand that. And yeah, that very much happened with us. And I think were still on that exponential trajectory, not just of metrics volume or whatnot, but also of the amount of substantive change were making to the system.CVS Caremark, one of the big three PBMs, put out a cost plus program. And I was like, ah, subtle. They even used our company colors, which I was like, nice. They definitely feel like they have to respond to us. Hopefully, it does drive more long-term meaningful change. My view is that in classic economic theory, where you have an opaque market, the winners are not the buyers or the sellerstheyre the people that broker information in between. You see that happening in healthcare like crazy, where the opacity is a feature, its not a bug because theyre able to create enormous arbitrage opportunities based on the opacity in the system.Actors on both sides of that, the pharma companies, the hospitals, the physicians, the providers realize, Hey, actually, weve been told that hiding our prices is good for negotiations. Actually, its just the opposite, were getting taken advantage of. And as that sort of mindset and knowledge spreads, hopefully, itll bring more meaningful transparency to the status quo.

Danish studioBIG and cabin manufacturer Nokken have developed Softshell, a timber-framed tentthat aims to offer a low-impact alternative for accommodation at eco-resorts and glamping sites.Intending to reduce the need for permanent infrastructure in remote natural settings, Softshell is designed byBIG and Nokkenas a mobile shelter that can be easily transported and assembled by its owner. It will feature a glued-laminated timber (glulam) structure with two levels enclosed by a cotton-mix canvas material.Softshell will have a glued-laminated timber structure and a canvas covering"Softshell is groundbreaking because it challenges the traditional ideas of what mobile accommodations and tents can be," said Nokken co-founders Nathan Aylott and James van Tromp."It combines the portability and simplicity of a traditional structure with the design sophistication and durability you'd expect from a more permanent dwelling," they told Dezeen."Thanks to our collaboration with BIG, the design feels fresh and forward-thinking, bringing together functionality and elegance in a way that really stands out."It aims to be a low-impact accommodation option for resortsSoftshell tents will have a square base measuring 4.2 metres wide and its pitched roof will rise to 4.75 metres tall. An entrance deck will provide an additional 2.1 metres of floor space. Its mobile structure is designed to have a minimal impact on the landscape, helping hospitality businesses such as eco-resorts and glamping sites to preserve their surroundings.Softshell can also be used by homeowners as a garden studio or guest accommodation.Read: Jupe travel pods are space-themed shelters for off-grid living"Many of our hospitality clients face challenges such as inaccessible sites or strict local construction regulations Softshell addresses both," said Aylott and Van Tromp."Its timber spars are man-portable, allowing access to remote locations beyond the reach of trucks or cranes. Additionally, local councils are often more lenient with canvas structures compared to traditional modular builds."The shelters will be built on a modular timber foundation, designed to be adaptable to different landscapes and to leave no lasting impact on the ground after it is removed.BIG developed the design with cabin manufacturer Nokken"The foundation is modular timber footing, which means it can be adjusted to different terrains without requiring any invasive groundwork," said Aylott and Van Tromp."This is really important to us because it aligns with our commitment to sustainability no digging, no disruption to the landscape.""Once the Softshell is disassembled, it leaves no lasting imprint on the environment," the co-founders continued. "It's ideal for locations that prioritise preservation, and it allows the structure to be moved and reused without harming the site."Softshell prototypes are currently being tested on sites in Canada, after which the tent will be made available to order, with the first deliveries expected for summer 2025.Other tent-like structures featured on Dezeen include a flat-pack temporary cabin designed for off-grid living and resort suites in Saudi Arabia informed by the tents of the nomadic Bedouin people. The images are courtesy of Nokken. The post BIG and Nokken marry "functionality and elegance" for mobile glulam tent appeared first on Dezeen.
