Its been another bumper crop year forANs Best of Design Awards. The 12th annual program honors built and unbuilt projects across typologies within the architecture community. This year, it features even more categories, jury members, and international firms and projectsthe first time the program has been eligible for all firms spanning the globe. As such, ANreceived the highest number of applications this year. Choosing winners and finalists was decidedly tough among the volume of applications. After many Zoom sessions and deliberations, the jury (featured below) considered context, culture, scale, and rigor among other factors. According to the rules of engagement for this extreme bounty range, the $2 million reward is for in-scope vulnerabilities against the platform that could result in a significant loss of funds or a data breach. What Crypto.com doesnt do, however, is outline precisely what criteria need to be met as, it said, these are extreme edge cases. Broadly speaking, though, hackers might expect to get the big payout, in a combination of traditional fiat funds and cryptocurrencies, for finding vulnerabilities that could result in a quick and immediate loss of over $1 million in funds to Crypto.com or its users, or that could dump customer information en masse. Critical update now warning issued for Samsung Galaxy ownersdpa/picture alliance via Getty ImagesSamsung has just confirmed details of its last security update of 2024, which includes critical fixes for Galaxy phones with attacks confirmed underway. This release followed within hours of Googles monthly Android security bulletin, and will include a raft of Android fixes as well as those from Samsung itself.One of the fixes confirmed this month is the long overdue Qualcomm patch for a vulnerability disclosed in October, which was discovered by Googles threat hunters with attacks underway, and prompted the US governments cyber defense agency to mandate all federal employee phones to be updated before the end of October.As ever, CISAs mandates apply more broadly than just to federal staff, with its remit to help keep all organizations safe from cyber attacks. All Galaxy owners should ensure they install the update as soon as its available for their model, region and carrier. You can find out if your device is due a monthly update here.MORE FROMFORBES VETTEDQualcomm warned that there are indications from Google Threat Analysis Group that CVE-2024-43047 may be under limited, targeted exploitation. It says it made fixes available to device OEMs in September and urged them to deploy those patches on released devices as soon as possible. Samsung told me updates have been rolling out since then, albeit we havent seen any formal confirmation until now.There were reports that Samsung had updated some devices twice during the month of November, but we dont have details of any of the security vulnerabilities this may have addressed. At least we now know that December is something of a catch-all.There are six critical Android fixes (CVE-2024-38408, CVE-2024-43096, CVE-2024-43770, CVE-2024-43771, CVE-2024-49747, CVE-2024-49748) this month, and one critical Samsung memory fix (CVE-2024-49415), which stops potential attacks from executing remote code on Galaxy devices.While its critical all Galaxy owners update as soon as possible, more attention is on Android 15 and One UI 7 at the moment, with frustration at the delays to even the beta release. This is now expected this month at least for the newest S24s in certain countries. Most users will need to await the stable release in 2025, though.Meanwhile, there are unauthorized downloads doing the rounds online, promising a sneak peek at One UI 7 apps. These should be avoided, given that installing such apps is dangerous and might bring you more than an early Android 15 experience.

In context: Preserving gaming history has become difficult lately, especially if the publisher's name starts with "Nin." GOG has done a commendable job at hosting classic PC games that go all the way back to the 1980s. Blizzard recently asked it to delist its Warcraft games. GOG will honor its request but promises that anyone who owns the games can look forward to continuing independent support. Blizzard is pulling Warcraft 1 and 2 from the GOG marketplace. The classic real-time strategy games are currently only available from GOG, as Blizzard has already replaced the originals with the recently remastered versions on Battle.net. In fact, the delisting from GOG is undoubtedly in response to the release of Blizzard's remakes.The Warcraft Remastered Battle Chest launched a few weeks ago, on November 13, to celebrate Warcraft's 30th anniversary. The $40 bundle includes Warcraft 1, 2, and 3, plus Warcraft: Orcs & Humans and Warcraft 2: Battle.net Edition. The package also has the bonus content from Warcraft 3's Spoils of War Edition.If you are tired of remasters (or just want the original experience for cheap), DRM-free versions of Warcraft 1 and 2 are still available on GOG bundled at $15. The packaged deal also includes Warcraft 2: Battle.net Edition (normally $10) and Orcs & Humans ($6). However, Blizzard asked GOG to remove them by December 13. Enter "MakeWarcraftLiveForever" during checkout to get $2 off.Aside from being DRM-free, GOG added the games to its preservation program, meaning GOG will keep these and other good old games playable on modern hardware for the foreseeable future."We make games live forever! I recall several years ago trying to get my old 1997 Blade Runner disc to run on my then-10-yeaar-old 2007 Sony Vaio. It was a nightmare, and I finally gave up. Then, in 2019, GOG came along and revived the point-and-click adventure with the help of the ScummVM community. I was happy to pay the $9 asking price to relive that classic game.So were many others. GOG's Blade Runner revival effort renewed interest in the two-decade-old title enough that Nightdive Studios went to work on a remastered version the following year. The remastered classic subsequently launched in 2022 on PC, consoles, and Switch.

In a nutshell: Nearly a year after its initial announcement, OpenWrt enthusiasts can now purchase the first "official" router powered by the namesake open-source firmware. The OpenWrt One model includes everything necessary for a robust networking experience though it comes at a price. Non-profit Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) partnered with OpenWrt to develop OpenWrt One, the first reference router based on the OpenWrt project. Announced in January, OpenWrt One is a wireless router focused on software freedom and the right to repair.The router features a MediaTek MT7981B SoC CPU and an MT7976C chip for Wi-Fi 6 connectivity. Its base hardware specifications include 1 GB of DDR4 RAM, 128 MB SPI NAND and 4 MB SPI NOR flash storage, two Ethernet ports (2.5 Gbit and 1 Gbit), a USB host port, and an M.2 2042 slot for NVMe storage devices. A USB-C port is also available as an alternative power source.The hardware is built on Banana Pi's open-source boards and is available in two options: a pre-assembled unit priced at $89 or as a router board for $68.42. According to SFC, the OpenWrt One is versatile, hacker-friendly, and essentially unbrickable, thanks to a dedicated switch that allows separate flashing of the NOR and NAND portions of the flash memory.OpenWrt One comes with the "stock" OpenWrt firmware, a Linux-based embedded operating system that can be configured either through a command-line interface or the LuCI GUI. SFC assures that users and developers can modify almost every aspect of the device, and the base unit has passed all FCC compliance tests. Source code and schematics are available under a GPL open-source license.SFC stated that OpenWrt One customers can achieve copyleft compliance, software right to repair, and FCC compliance within a single product for the first time. December treats include a parade of planets, some winter stars, and a meteor shower.Recommended VideosThanks to its brightness, Venus is easy to spot this month in the southwest after sunset. Youll notice it getting a bit higher in the sky each evening throughout the month. On December 4, the slim crescent moon will be hanging right below it, with NASA suggesting it could make for a great photo.RelatedSaturn, which is far dimmer than Venus, but still viewable with the naked eye, can be seen toward the south beginning at nightfall. it will move west as the weeks pass.Jupiter, meanwhile, reaches opposition on December 7, meaning that itll be at its brightest for the year and visible throughout the night. You can find it rising in the east-northeast as darkness falls. In the middle of the month, Jupiter can be spotted between the nearly full moon and Tauruss brightest star, Aldebaran.Mars will double its brightness over the coming weeks, with its salmon-pink color making it easy to spot. At the moment, its rising about four hours after dark, but by New Years Eve, itll come into view about 90 minutes after sunset. Meanwhile, on December 17, the red planet will appear very close to the moon.December isnt all about planets. Theres plenty of stars to spot, too. As evening falls, youll see the mighty hunter Orion rising in the east, with Taurus the bull above it, and the stars of the twins in Gemini to their left, NASA says in a video. These constellations host some wonderful sights like the Crab Nebula and Pleiades star cluster in Taurus and the misty Orion Nebula, which hangs below Orions belt.Check out NASAs video for some tips on how to use it to find the so-called Winter Triangle, formed by three of the brightest stars in the winter sky: Sirius, Betelgeuse, and Procyon.Meteor fans will also have a chance to enjoy the Geminid meteor shower, which peaks after midnight in the early morning of December 14. With up to 150 meteors streaking across the sky every hour at its peak, NASA says that the Geminids are usually one of the best meteor showers of the year.
