30 years of PlayStation and it never got better than Ridge Racer Readers FeatureGameCentralPublished December 7, 2024 9:00am The PS1s most important launch game (Bandai Namco)A reader shares his fond memories of playing Ridge Racer on the original PlayStation and explains why it was so influential on the rest of his gaming life.I have enjoyed all the discussion of PlayStations 30 years in the business over the last week or so and after feeling so pessimistic about Sony for so long its been nice to feel warm and fuzzy about them again. Theyve even had a good marketing campaign for it, with the kids through the ages unwrapping their presents, which adds to the cosy feelings. The original PlayStation was my first console when I was 12. Before that Id just played on a friends Mega Drive and anothers Amiga, but Id never owned either myself. Therere no embarrassing photos of me in my pyjamas, ripping the wrapping paper off as if my life depended on it, but I was definitely super excited. Especially as I knew it came with a top notch game: Ridge Racer.Or at least Id heard it was top notch. Unlike GC, I had never seen it in arcades as, in my experience, it was actually quite a rare coin-op and so all I knew is that it was a racing game where the graphics looked completely real. That seems laughable when you look at it nowadays and yet I still think theres an elegant simplicity to it that matches the equally simple but still very fun gameplay.People talk about the moment they first saw Super Mario 64 as a milestone event, a switch from 2D to 3D that has never been matched again. But I missed out on that too. I didnt know anyone that had a N64 and I never saw the game until years after it first came out and it was no longer a groundbreaker. For me, that special moment of realisation, where I felt the gaming world morph from 2D to 3D, happened right there in Ridge Racer on the PS1. It may have had only one track, but I dont know how many hundreds of hours I happily put into it, trying to unlock everything, get better times, and do weird things like hit the helicopter.I still feel the game looks good today and seeing it in action it makes me feel nostalgic in a way I rarely ever am usually, about games or anything else. Ive joked before that the PlayStation has never got better for me since then and obviously thats not really true there have been plenty of better games on each PlayStation console. But in terms of that magic feeling, that sense that a new age has come and you are right there at the start of it nothing has ever beaten that. I understand it was the same for Super Mario 64 players and its sad that improvements in graphics have now slowed to almost a stop, so its never likely that feeling will be repeated. That doesnt mean we cant be wowed by graphics anymore, as there are tons of amazing looking games every year, but its never the same quantum leap as it was with the first PlayStation and Ridge Racer. VR is the closest thing but while I dont own a headset I have played them before and while the effect is impressive all the games still seem like tech demos to me.More TrendingI suppose you could argue that Ridge Racer was as well, to at least some degree, but for me it will always be my fondest memory of the original PlayStation and the most influential game when it comes to my love of gaming.By reader DaleL Wow, what a start! • Invincibles Back for Season 3, and Doing Its Thing Again
    gizmodo.com
Prime VideosInvinciblehas been steadily going through a number of well-worn superhero stories and putting its own, usually bloody spin on things. After the previous two seasons tackled plots like the standard origin story, a team of newbies stepping up, and the multiverse, season three is going for kid proteges and heroes vs. their shady government pals. After accidentally killing Angstrom Levy, Marks back to working with Cecil and focusing on being his best, superheroic self. Just when it seems hes got a handle on things, hes not too happy to learn Cecils made D.A. Sinclair produce his Reanimen to fight off the eventual Viltrumite invasion. Things eventually come to a head when Cecil decides to try and put Mark in his place, but Mark wont make it easy for him. Like in previous Invincible trailers, everyones either tearing through their enemies or getting their own shit rocked. The only one without much fighting spirit is Omni-Man, whos in Viltrumite prison up in space, and not looking to partner up with Allen the Alien to bust out and go against his own people. https://youtu.be/rbHUhCcSXEMMark wont just have to contend with Cecil and Sinclair this season. His half-brother Oliver has decided to join the family business as a superhero. Hes as much of a powerhouse as his dad and brother, but a little tooeager, so it falls to Mark to help him become more than a one-kid wrecking machine. And it looks like hell need it, since a big-ass dragon, Dupli-Kates evil brother, and the Mauler Twins are some of the other big threats to Earth. Invinciblesthird season hits Prime Video with its first three episodes on February 6, 2025, followed by a new one every week until March 13. Want more io9 news? • Star Trek: Section 31 Wants You to Know Its Chock Full of Action
    gizmodo.com
After several false starts, Paramounts finally making good on its years-old promise to give Michelle Yeoh a Star Trekvehicle of her own. Section 31puts the once-evil version of Phillippa Georgiou center stage, and its newest trailer puts a bigger emphasis on the action and ragtag crew thatll be aiding her in her exploits. Directed byStar Trek: Discovery producer/director Olatunde Osunsanmi, the filmRachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl) may be there to stop the team from breaking toomany rules, but Georgiou and her crew know theyll definitely be getting their hands dirty. Said crew invovles Changeoid spy Quasi (Sam Richardson), the exosuit-wearing Zeph (Robert Kazinsky), honeypot expert Melle (Humberly Gonzalez), and the tempermental Fuzz (Sven Ruygrok). Whereas the first trailer was glitzy and glamorous, this new one shows the team putting their skills to use and getting in the dirtaka, chaos like club shootouts and dogfights, while proclaiming they need to work together to stay alive. But were still not seeing them get up to the shady, morally compromising stuff previously seen or hinted at in earlier Star Trekstories. Youve got to figure that darkness is being hidden behind the spectacle and explosions were used to from Star Trekby now, especially since Georgious got to contend with her past as an Emperor back in her home universe. Well find out for sure whenStar Trek: Section 31hits Paramount+ on January 24, 2025. Want more io9 news? This villa is a 1200 m house with 9 bedrooms designed and constructed in a 2550 m land inside Amirdasht town, north of Iran. The client wanted a house for their big family reunions and parties.Save this picture!Save this picture! In order to take advantage of the striking views of the forest on the east side of the plot, the land was longitudinally divided into two. A long slender volume perpendicular to the street open to both sides was built in the western half reserving the eastern part for a generous outdoor deck and pool. This volume contains the main living and dining area, kitchen and bar, looking out to the forest and the pool through a glass curtain of sliding doors, bringing the outdoors in. the wooden flooring extends outside which functions as an internal esplanade for the building. This wooden deck is connected to a big wooden terrace via an outdoor stair. Another volume was added to the north part of the building forming an L shape to use the north extension of the pool as an indoor pool.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! On the upper floor a corridor connects the sitting room on the south next to the void to the TV room on the north with 5 bedrooms and a laundry along the way. Every space also facing an open terrace. Stone walls that offset from 3 sides are designed in different parts which brings conceptual unity to the project. Few materials were selected to compose a calming environment, wood for the floor and ceiling and stone for some walls.Save this picture!Save this picture! Before the construction, drainage operations were carried out beneath the entire foundation of the building and the pool to manage and utilize surface water effectively. The collected surface water is stored in a 30,000-liter tank, which is used for irrigating the landscape, with any excess directed to the town canal.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeSABK design groupOfficePublished on December 08, 2024Cite: "Villa No. 268 / SABK design group" 07 Dec 2024. Walking through the site reveals a variety of views, each expressing the richness of its natural setting. Two views stand out in particular: the sunset over the Seto Inland Sea to the northwest, and the sweeping mountain range rising to the southeast. Rather than simply accepting this expansive land and striking scenery as they are, we sought to design an architecture that establishes connections with the environment in multiple directions.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The woodland slopes form cliffs of varying heights, and in some places, the lack of retaining walls left the land unstable. This topography, specifically the cliff's angle of repose, guided our decision to position the building's main volume at the center of the site. A plan that would simply place the main room in the center facing the two directions with good views, surrounded by private rooms, would only create a relationship between the building and the vast empty space around it. Instead, while keeping the main room central, we envisioned a form reminiscent of a tree, with corridors radiating outward like branches to connect with the private rooms. These branch-like corridors were widened to function as lounges, creating semi-public spaces between the main room and the private rooms.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The design establishes a gradual progression of privacy, moving from the main room through the lounges to the private quarters. This transition is emphasized architecturally: ceilings lower as spaces become more private, while public areas are given higher ceilings. The private rooms that branch off from the lounges guide sightlines in multiple directions, offering diverse views while creating spatial continuity and depth. This branching configuration also allows the outdoor areas to be subtly divided, creating a series of layered gardens that capture the site's different views: one frames the setting sun, another opens to the ocean, while others welcome the morning light, face the mountain range, provide a playful refuge for children, or borrow scenery from the surrounding woodland.Save this picture! The design grows from its central trunk, extending branches that radiate outward to create a subdivision of space. The resulting gardens work in concert with the site's natural assets, establishing a home where life flows organically through the grounds. This is an architecture that invites residents to discover spaces perfectly suited to each season, each time of day, and each purpose as it arises.
