Why did we think Neanderthals werent smart?
H.G. Wells is probably best known for his story about an alien invasion, The War of the Worlds, and some of his other fantastical science fiction. But he also dabbled in some less well known prehistorical fiction. In 1921, he published a story about early modern humans and Neanderthals called The Grisly Folk. In it, a group of early modern humans is wandering around. Wells makes it clear that he does not think they are especially refined. They engage in scintillating dialog like:Ugh! said one abruptly and pointed.Ugh! cried his brother. But though these true men, as Wells calls them, were still savages, very prone to violence and convulsive in their lusts and desires, they were, he claims, recognizably human. We can understand something of what was going on in their minds, those of us who can remember the fears, desires, fancies and superstitions of our childhood, he says. By contrast, the antagonists of this particular story, the grisly men, are not recognizably human at all. These are Neanderthals, and, Wells imagines, they were less intelligent than true men; they had no speech and did not understand. They were less social than true men, and senselessly violent. In the story, they make a hobby of making off with the children of true men. And, in Wells version of events, they treated their own children no better. He writes descriptions like: A male may have gone with a female or so; perhaps they parted in the winter and came together in the summer; when his sons grew big enough to annoy him, the grisly man killed them or drove them off. If he killed them he may have eaten them. If they escaped him they may have returned to kill him. The grisly folk may have had long unreasoning memories and very set purposes. In short: Wells assumed Neanderthals were unintelligent brutes. And he was absolutely not alone. For around a century, this was the prevailing narrative about Neanderthals. It was present, not just in Wellss imagination, but in scientific papers. In more recent decades, weve realized that this narrative is almost certainly incorrect. Researchers have revisited old Neanderthal bones and tools, and realized that our prior understanding of these early human peoples was misguided. Still, the myth of the ignorant Neanderthal is so pervasive that headlines often lead with it. Neanderthals were not less intelligent than modern humans, scientists find reads a Guardian headline. Or, from HowStuffWorks: More Proof Neanderthals Werent Stupid: They Made Their Own String. The question is: Where did this idea even come from? Why did researchers think Neanderthals were so unintelligent to begin with? It turns out theres a really deep past to that, says Paige Madison, a science writer who wrote a journal article on this topic, and is writing an upcoming book on human origins. Theres a reason why we tend to think of Neanderthals as these kind of brutish, dumb, lesser Homo sapiens. We spoke to Madison as part of the latest episode of Unexplainable, Voxs science podcast, which looks at how difficult it is to really know anything about Neanderthals at all. What follows is my conversation with Madison, edited for clarity and length. Byrd Pinkerton Dont leave me in suspense. What is the deep, dark reason that we thought of Neanderthals as dumb?Paige Madison So the first Neanderthal fossils [recognized as such] came out of the ground in the 1850s. And you have this confluence of factors that shaped how people were thinking about Neanderthals and even how they were thinking about themselves. This was [a time] of colonialism, and you had all of these assumptions about what variation meant amongst humans and what it meant for potentially taking over other cultures and extracting resources from them. There were a lot of assumptions about certain groups of living humans being superior to other groups. Those assumptions made their way into the science of Neanderthals. [They] were just sort of taking [their] worldview on humans and applying it to these fossils in the past.Byrd Pinkerton Is there a specific example that helps explain how the culture of the late 19th century wound up informing how people looked at bones?Paige Madison At the time you had this new science that was really trying to put living humans into categories and characterize them and understand differences. The form that it really took was the measurement of skulls. There were scientists collecting skulls from all over the world and trying to measure these variations. One was the presence of a brow ridge, which is something that varies a little bit with living humans, and there was this idea that [a brow ridge] was more primitive. And then the presence of a steep forehead. They thought that this had to do with a region of the brain that was more developed. And so they would generally categorize most Europeans, for example, as having this steep forehead, and they would use this as evidence that these groups were superior. Those differences are minuscule and they are certainly not meaningful in terms of intellect and cognition, but at the time they were seen as incredibly meaningful and a way that you could differentiate these groups. So Neanderthals then come out of the ground and just get slotted into that worldview. They fit in exactly the spot that these European scientists were categorizing as the lower end of human intellect. The more primitive end. And it automatically then carried with it the implication that these were creatures that were primitive.Byrd Pinkerton Where did the perception of the hunched Neanderthal come from? Beyond just them being foolish, I feel like I also have this impression of them knuckle-dragging around. Slumping.Paige MadisonYeah! So theres this story that you will find in textbooks, where basically this one French scientist, Marcellin Boule, misinterpreted a Neanderthal skeleton. And as the story goes, he got a hold of one of the first really complete specimens and he took a look at it and decided that these were these hunched-over brutes that were so dumb that they couldnt even really stand up straight. But I think he kind of applied this brutish conception that had already existed and applied it to their posture. And so of course that is significant. It did partially shape how we think about them. But he certainly did not invent it by any means.Byrd Pinkerton Got it. So a variety of European scientists developed this narrative about Neanderthals as dummies, people who were somehow inferior to other early modern humans. How did we start pushing back on that story?Paige MadisonIt definitely wasnt just one thing. Very rarely in the history of science do we ever see big conceptions shifting because of one thing. So just as Boule didnt create this image [of the brutish Neanderthal] alone, it wasnt destroyed by one scientist alone, but instead was more of a confluence of factors that happened all around the same time. One of those was World War II coming to a close and the consequences of the involvement of race science in World War II being really clear. So, for a historian, it doesnt seem to be a coincidence that you see people starting to push back on this dumb, brutish, primitive conception [of Neanderthals] right around the time that people are also pushing back on the racial conceptions of living humans.Another thing was, scientists actually got back into the museum in Paris, where the skeleton that Marcellin Boule looked at was housed and they took a second look. They noticed that this was an elderly individual, and it was very clear that there were signs of arthritis on the bones. Byrd Pinkerton So basically it was like if people 10,000 years in the future took like one super arthritic old man and were like, Yep, every person in the 2000s was just like this 72-year-old. Paige MadisonExactly. And its worth mentioning, too, that the signs of arthritis on the skeleton are well recognized and Boule probably should have been able to recognize them. So it kind of goes to show how our expectations can lead us towards a certain conclusion and kind of push us in that direction even when the evidence isnt quite there. Thats why you see these interpretations change over time because theres so much else thats going into the interpretation. Its not as simple as looking at the bones and immediately knowing exactly what they mean. That is being filtered through tons of other information, both scientific and cultural. You know, we just cant turn off that lens at any given moment.Byrd Pinkerton So... its kind of like Boules ideas in his time were easily accepted because they made sense in the cultural context that they were a part of, but later, they were rejected, in part because of evidence and also in part maybe because the narrative had shifted. People were questioning race science anyway. They were starting to question race science applied to Neanderthals. And so suddenly its almost like it opened up space to also question this image that Boule had [of Neanderthals]?Paige MadisonExactly. Suddenly the earlier ideas about Neanderthals just didnt make as much sense.Byrd Pinkerton It sounds like what youre saying is that our perception of Neanderthals has always been less about Neanderthals and more about ourselves, or our current cultural moment? Like, if you read what people historically have written about Neanderthals, you learn less about Neanderthals and you just learn more about the scientists and the society that they live in?Paige MadisonThats exactly what I would argue. Some scholars have said that its a little bit like holding a mirror up to ourselves, because Neanderthals were so closely related to humans living today.I think whats interesting about it and youll hear this from a lot of historians of science is that its much easier to see that in the past, to accuse them of making mistakes given their biases or their cultural or political leanings, but in fact, what most historians and philosophers of science would argue is that that is still going on. Its just harder to see it in the present. Byrd PinkertonHow do modern scientists guard against this in their attempts to better understand Neanderthals?Paige MadisonI think the best thing that most scientists can do at this point is to be very explicit about what their biases could be, what the limitations might be, and really just put all of that out on the table so that we can examine it the best that we can.One really strong way that I see this playing out in the science is [scientists] recognizing that their worldviews are shaping the kinds of questions that theyre asking and the ways theyre asking those questions. So, for example, if you find artwork in a cave, and you assume that artwork is something that only Homo sapiens have done and that Neanderthals were not capable of it then you never even ask the question [could Neanderthals have made this?]. You just ask Which Homo sapiens did this and when? But if you come into a cave and you see that theres art in there, you can ask, Who did this? in a more open way.Thats something I work with scientists [on] a lot just thinking about the ways that their starting points, their questions, have already either opened or closed certain possibilities.Youve read 1 article in the last monthHere at Vox, we're unwavering in our commitment to covering the issues that matter most to you threats to democracy, immigration, reproductive rights, the environment, and the rising polarization across this country. Our mission is to provide clear, accessible journalism that empowers you to stay informed and engaged in shaping our world. Games Inbox: Will The Game Awards 2024 be worth watching?
No Mans Sky will indie games bolster The Game Awards? (Hello Games)The Monday letters page wonders if even Nintendo know when the Switch 2 will be out, as a reader enjoys early access to Indiana Jones And The Great Circle. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.ukA good yearI hope the rumours about The Game Awards being a good one are true because we really could do with ending 2024 on a positive note. It really has been a terrible year for gaming and just about everything else. Yes, weve had some good games out this year, but that was all stuff started five years ago, even before the pandemic. As we start to get into next year and beyond I fear the number of interesting games is going to drastically decrease.I really want The Game Awards to prove me wrong though, because its obvious that Sony cant be bothered to calm fears on their own. But I just dont know whos going to swoop in and be the hero we deserve here. Whos expecting Take-Two, EA, or Ubisoft to turn up with games so good they suddenly make everyone optimistic about the games industry again?I just dont know. Hopefully Capcom can do something, but I doubt Nintendo will be there. Therell probably be a lot of indie games so maybe they can pick up the slack. No Mans Sky was amazing when it was first unveiled, even if it took years to actually come good.ReikoCrazy yearIts amusing to me that even Nintendo are reportedly worried about competing with GTA 6. I know we dont know for sure what theyre planning for the Switch 2s release date, but this talk of May makes sense while also smacking of being the absolute last moment Nintendo can release it, without doing it in the middle of the summer games drought.I suspect everything is still up in their air though, as not only do we know nothing about GTA 6s release date yet but its not clear if these Trump tariffs are going to affect the US price of the Switch 2 either. It may feel like fans are being left in the dark, but Id be very surprised if Nintendo had a cast iron plan yet, given how crazy things are going to get next year.LumpySleeping giantWith Sony and Microsoft seemingly losing the plot, a lot of people have wondered whether someone else will swoop in and become a big player in gaming. Someone like Apple, Google, or Amazon. All of these are very rich companies, but theyve all had some involvement in gaming already and mostly made a hash of it. Im not sure they really want to go for round two and even if they did, whats to say theyd do any better? But this news about possible Steam-based consoles makes me wonder if the next industry leader is already here, lurking in the background. More people use Steam than any console so they technically are the biggest format already, but if they did choose to make new, easy-to-use, hardware I do think they could make an impact.I dont know if thats their intention they dont seem to push the Steam Deck as much as I thought they would but they may be slowly realising that they have an opportunity and the competition is not looking too clever at the moment.ColmEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukEarly paymentWell, I did what I said I would do and buy Indiana Jones And The Great Circle day one. I actually thought it was out next Monday for some reason. So buying it today, Friday the 6th, brings a tear to my eye as I wait for the 131GB to download. I did go all in and buy the Premium Edition, by the way. Xbox needs a game like this right now.Im a MachineGames fan, having loved the Wolfenstein reboots, so Im glad it reviewed well and Im happy to throw some money their way to support their game. I didnt mind the last Wolfenstein with the girls, but it did get old before it should have. I played It single-player and I know it was meant to be played with a two-player team-up. It looks like theyve learned from their mistakes at what went wrong with that anyway, with no mention of replaying areas with respawning enemies.I look forward to playing when it finally downloads.Nick The GreekGC: It didnt officially launch until today. The Premium Edition gave three days early access.Too much of a good thingI mentioned it earlier in the year, but Timemelters seems to fit the bill for your December indie catch-up: only reviewed by a handful of critics but seems to have some interesting ideas and has been well received by those who have played it (I bought it but havent even loaded it up).Since rediscovering PC gaming with the Steam Deck, Im always amazed at the number of games being made. I was looking for a new indie boomer shooter recently and found about 10 Id never heard of, all apparently very good. Cant review em all.MagnumstacheBlame it on SkynetI can absolutely see what the reader is getting at with their Readers Feature about the Switch 2. Im already worried about whether itll be unsustainable for Nintendo and other Japanese companies but trying to do anything beyond the PS5 Pro seems like such a pointless effort, thats doomed to failure. As dumb as most publishers seem to have been acting lately I cant believe that they havent considered this problem and I keep coming back to that Microsoft comment about the next gen Xbox being the largest technological leap ever.We have two options here: either theyre completely off their trolley and/or just straight-up lying or they have a plan. To me the only thing that comes close to making sense is AI, which Microsoft has lots of leeway with. The quality of AI-generated videos seems to improve almost by the week so I wonder if that can be leveraged in some way to make games on the fly? That seems impossible but I really dont know what else Microsoft could be thinking of. Having everything look 10% more realistic is not a technological leap, so what are they talking about?OrionPrincely sumSmyths currently has the Switch version of Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown for 9.99 and Xbox/PlayStation 5 versions for 14.99. Absolutely ridiculous price for a Game of the Year contender.I can thoroughly recommend the excellent DLC too. Ive already lamented its poor sales, meaning Ubisoft wont be following up on it, but people get a chance to play a fantastic game for an incredible price.Euclidian BoxesGC: The Switch version doesnt seem to be listed anymore, maybe it sold out.Unintended bullet timeWe expect a lot from video games these days.We talk about constant high frame rates and complain when they drop in busier moments of play, often jarring that immersion that captivates us. But I remember a time, and maybe this was isolated to experiences I had with friends as a younger video game fan, where we would be quite impressed when there was so much going on in a game that everything slowed down for a couple of seconds while the console caught up with the action on screen. It was actually a joyous moment, and we often celebrated the event with exclamations. In tougher moments there was a knack to taking advantage of the hardwares limitations, using the gifted seconds to compose oneself, almost like it was a built-in perk to manipulate time. Because, of course, it was all the players doing, pushing the game to its limit. Or at least thats how it felt, as no developer would intentionally try to crash their own game, would they? For example, during a match in Street Fighter 2, you could send your opponent crashing through destructible background props and if you were proficient enough, already having jumped into a close quarters situation performed an uppercut, followed by a shoryuken before the game was ready almost like you were using a programmable pad.Or perhaps you and your buddy are raising hell in the alien-occupied streets of Contra 3 and let off a bomb while you continue firing in all directions. You can practically see your heroes pectoral muscles jolt as the gun recoils with each bullet, that leaves the chamber recreating something of an 80s Schwarzeneggar action movie with complementary slowdown for cinematic effect, your exclamatory yells ring out like a war cry.The same can be said for a multitude of 2D shmups giving you some grace to contemplate your next move in bullet time, while the game behaves like a tranquilised sloth with zero ambition in life. Of course, slowdown wasnt always helpful, but then neither is the solar powered torch I bought from Amazon, which worked fine until I really needed it.I guess with the way the world is today, so many more people are tech savvy and your latest console better act like it because there are boxes to be ticked, when the truth is a steady high frame rate shouldnt be noticed, just like an unsung hero doesnt get sang at.However, the reality is the complete opposite, we focus a lot on what a console can or cant do for the games before its even released, regardless of what the games can do for the console.I think this generation is a great example of that notion.Bad EditInbox also-ransAs a keen fan of the original I was wondering if you are going to review The Thing Remastered?Dangeraaron07 (PSN ID)GC: Probably not, no. Shadow drops are a very foolish concept, in our opinion, especially for lower profile titles, since it all but guarantees less coverage than normal. The nearly 100 Digital Deluxe version of Suicide Squad on Xbox is now only 4.99. Ive always loved Rocksteadys games and I redeemed 5 voucher from my rewards points so got it for nothing. The Suicide Squad are Getting (and Trying for) One Last Hurrah
Things have been a bit weird for the Suicide Squad in the past decade. After their 2016 film came out to a tepid response, later projects with the antihero team have been erratic. James Gunns 2021 movie has been generally regarded as pretty good, and that anime from earlier this year seemed fine. But DCEU fans have been hoping for director David Ayers original vision to see the light of day with an Ayer Cut, while over in video games, Rocksteadys Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguehas been one of the years biggest misfires. Somehow, both the game and 2016 film ended up back in the spotlight again this week. First up, Rocksteady finally confirmed Deathstroke will join the Squadroster this Tuesday, December 10. The DC assassin will be the gamesIGN Rocksteady would see Suicide Squadsroadmap of Year 1 content through, but danced around anything afterwards. The games development troubles and underperformance has been fairly well documented, and its also been said that Rocksteadys aiming to make single-player games again, so Slade may be the final baddie to join Squads short lineup of antiheroes. As for the movie, Ayer recently reiterated his hope for his original Suicide Squadto be released to the public. He told his fans on X how much he appreciates the continued support and interest, and that its best version simply has not been seen. If you dislike [the theatrical cut], heres an opportunity to see what I actually intended and then judge once you have all the information. He admitted the chances of it releasing are out of his hands and entirely up to WB and James Gunn. Still, he argued that it should be seen, mainly on the basis that itd be a lot of fun for fans of his work that still feel slighted by what played in theaters. If it happens cool. If it doesnt cool. Its just not that deep, he concluded in a reply. I think you deserve to see it and judge it then. If its not for you, all good.Currently, its unknown what future the Suicide Squad has as a brand, and DC isnt even currently running a new comic for the team. Theyll likely still get some attention, but the team makeup of Harley, Boomerang, King Shark, and Deadshot that got popularized with the New 52 and 2016 movie is probably done for now. Its only a matter of time before we see who headlines the group next, and what weird missions they get caught up in.[via The Hollywood Reporter] Want more io9 news? The Gorge Is a Starcrossed, Possibly Monstrous Love Story
Got plans for Valentines Day next year? Apple hopes you dont plan on seeing Captain America: Brave New World or go on a date, because its got a fresh new movie dropping that weekendits called The Gorge, and will hopefully be a movie that appeals to all pairings on the lovey-dovey day. Directed byBlack PhoneandDoctor StrangesScott Derrickson, the film stars Miles Teller as Levi and Anya Taylor-Joy as Drasa. Theyre elite snipers for their respective countries, and theyre manning towers on opposite sides of amassivegorge. Their mission, spend a full year using their skills and high-tech equipment to keep watch and preventsomethingdown below from getting out. Whats down in the gorge, they arent told, and theyre also instructed not to ever contact each other. Of course, they eventually go and make contact with each other, forming a very long-distance bond that could become something more, if only they could be closer. But first, they have to finish the rest of their mission, which gets tricky when saidthingdown there starts rising up. Eventually, Levi and Drasa are forced into the gorge, and theyve got to rely on each other to escape, if they even can. Derrickson previously told IGN this would blend elements of romance and sci-fi with action, spy thriller and even horror, and he might not be wrong. It looks like theres a little something for everyone here, and its got a neat hook behind it. Hopefully its not just all talk and it works as both a love story and a creature feature. Bali Architecture Guide: 25 Projects Blending Tradition with Innovation in Indonesia's Most Visited Island
Bali might most commonly be associated with its beaches and leisure sector. Rightfully so, since the Indonesian province received more than 2.9 tourists this year alone. Along with the temporary visitors, Bali also houses some longer-term inhabitants and digital nomads, which contributed to its fast population increase. This has naturally affected its urban density and its need for additional accommodation and services, offering opportunities for some creative architecture and materials exploration.

Creating Winter Retreats: Snow Resorts and Vacation Home Typologies
Creating Winter Retreats: Snow Resorts and Vacation Home TypologiesSave this picture!Peterhof Alpe Furx Hotel / Baumschlager Eberle Architekten. Image Albrecht Immanuel SchnabelAs we move past Thanksgiving and step into December, the festive season is fast approaching. This time of year brings celebrations, holidays, and travel plans into full swing. Particularly in the Northern Hemisphere, there is a strong association between end-of-year festivities and cold, snowy weather.Among the many traditions that celebrate the season, one of the most logistically and architecturally challenging is arranging for the giant Christmas tree for Rockefeller Center in New York City. This spectacle of moving a 70+ foot, 10+ ton tree into one of the busiest city centers in the world continues to capture the holiday spirit annually. As people prepare for the holiday season, many plan trips to resorts, hotels, or vacation homes in winter wonderlands, often near ski and snowboard destinations. These trips embrace the magic of a "White Christmas" and offer recreational skiing and snowboarding opportunities, hopefully set against the backdrop of thoughtfully designed architecture. How has the design of destination architecture for snowy climates evolved over the years, and what defining characteristics do these spaces now exhibit? Related Article Canadas Wilderness Retreats: Exploring The Nation's Tradition of Nature-Bound Cabins Common Interior Palettes in Snow: Wood, Texture, and WarmthA common feature across snow destination resorts and vacation homes is the interior design palette, which often emphasizes warm-toned wood finishes. These finishes typically extend beyond flooring to encompass walls and ceilings, creating a cohesive and inviting environment. The texture of wood contributes to a warm and cozy atmosphere, ideally suited to cold, snowy surroundings. A cultural association of cottages and cabins with holiday homes further drives this design approach.Fabric and textured materials are prevalently used in more extensive accommodation facilities like resorts and hotels. These materials enhance the aesthetic and serve practical purposes, such as sound absorption and durabilityqualities that wood alone may not provide, given its susceptibility to chipping and water damage. The projects featured in this article consistently showcase these interior design trends, highlighting the enduring appeal of these elements. Furthermore, a fireplace is almost guaranteed in these settings, adding essential warmth and softness. Whether in private vacation homes or expansive resort spaces, fireplaces remain a hallmark feature that enhances the coziness of snowy destination architecture.Save this picture!Gable Roofs and Small Mass TypologiesOne of the critical design challenges in snow-heavy regions is managing snow loads on buildings, as excessive accumulation can impose significant structural demands. Being extremely heavy, snow requires robust design solutions to prevent overloading and potential structural failures. While building flat roofs in these areas is not impossible, doing so necessitates integrating systems such as roof heating and robust drainage to ensure melted snow and water do not accumulate excessively. However, these solutions come with higher initial construction costs and ongoing maintenance expenses, which historically have been less common in snow-prone regions. As a result, gable roofs have emerged as a prevalent typology for buildings in high-snowfall areas. This roof form is particularly well-suited for vacation homes and small cabin resorts. Geometrically, gable roofs are efficient for structures with smaller footprints, as this minimizes the span and height of the roof, reducing the structural requirements associated with snow loads. Smaller footprints also mean less snow accumulates on the roof, mitigating the need for extensive structural reinforcements. This pragmatic approach has made the gable roof popular, offering architects and designers the creative freedom to orient these small roof masses in various waysaligning them with views, site contours, or specific site adjacenciesto design ideal vacation homes.Additionally, gable roofs offer an aesthetic and experiential advantage: the exposed underside of the sloping roof structure becomes a defining feature of snow-destination homes. This detail is particularly appreciated by residents escaping from urban areas, where high-density living often results in flat horizontal ceilings dictated by uniform floorplates in multi-story buildings. By contrast, the low-density environments of snow destinations allow for greater design flexibility, enabling occupants to enjoy the spatial and visual richness of non-flat ceilings, which are both a practical response to snowy conditions and a luxurious architectural feature inspired by their context.Peterhof Alpe Furx Hotel / Baumschlager Eberle ArchitektenSave this picture!Split View Mountain Lodge / Reiulf Ramstad ArchitectsSave this picture!Expressive Roofs: Tailoring Architecture for Snowy LandscapesAnother typology often seen in snow-destination resorts is the use of experimental and expressive roof designs, allowing architects and designers the freedom to create bespoke roof forms tailored to the needs of each building. These custom roofs address the challenges posed by snow loads on flat roofs, as previously discussed while taking advantage of the lower-density nature of these developments. The irregular geometry of such roofs provides greater flexibility in accommodating building footprints, as the design can be scaled to any width or length, provided the roof maintains a sufficient slope to manage snow accumulation effectively. This approach is particularly prevalent in larger resorts, where expansive roof forms are often employed. While larger roofs necessitate more robust structural systems to support their weight and meet snow-load requirements, this added complexity is typically acceptable for large-scale resort developments, which, anyway, demand significant structural and geotechnical engineering. Moreover, this typology offers a thermal advantage: designing a larger mass with less surface area relative to its floor area helps the building retain heat more efficiently. In cold, snow-dominant climates, this heat retention reduces the energy required for heating, provided adequate ventilation is maintained for indoor air quality. On a smaller scale, expressive roof forms can serve as defining design elements, shaping the relationship between the building, its structure, and the site. For example, in Kicking Horse Residence, the roof folds downward to seamlessly transition into the wall, creating a sculptural expression while cantilevering over the snowy landscape. Similarly, Cabin A's roof incorporates varying slopes and extends downward on one side to engage directly with the ground. As snow accumulates, the structure appears to blend into its surroundings, connecting with the landscape and camouflaging its presence within nature. These roof designs highlight the architectural potential of snow-destination typologies, balancing functionality with site-specific creativity.Kicking Horse Residence / Bohlin Cywinski Jackson + Association with Bohlin Grauman Miller ArchitectsSave this picture!Cabin A / Bourgeois / Lechasseur architectesSave this picture!Myrkdalen Hotel / JVASave this picture!Reimagining Construction MethodologiesIn extremely cold and snowy environments, construction techniques and systems for vacation homes and resorts can undergo creative reinterpretation. Moving beyond traditional roof geometries and material palettes, some projects challenge conventional approacheslike stick-frame cabins or standard steel structuresby experimenting with hybrid methodologies or uncommon practices. Some of these approaches incorporate monolithic materials, such as concrete, combined with thickened insulation layers or explore finishes that simulate organic forms inspired by snow and ice.In Chalet on Powder Mountain, a uniform steel structural grid frame was designed to facilitate efficient construction on a challenging site. The standardized steel elements eliminated the need for custom shapes and dimensions, establishing a robust structural framework. A wood cabin was then inserted and attached within this frame, allowing for specific, customizable design considerations focusing on spatial interpretations. The hybrid system leverages the durability and precision of steel for structural stability. At the same time, the wood sub-structure allows for construction adjustability and tolerance while providing warmth and a visual softness that is quintessential to cabin aesthetics.Combined with less common insulation techniques, concrete construction is exemplified in Hamran/Johansen Arkitekter's Concrete Cabin.Beyond material innovation, the form-making process may also become a focal point in snow-destination design, as seen in the Barin Ski Resort. Its exterior and interior surfaces feature organic geometric shapes achieved through plaster shaping or material contouring. These methods allowed the creation of fluid, curvilinear forms inspired by snow and ice, evoking the appearance of a structure carved out of a solid. While constructed using conventional methods, the resort's unique form-finding approach captures the essence of its environment, blending architecture and landscape seamlessly and evocatively.Chalet on Powder Mountain / Schemata Architects + Jo NagasakaSave this picture!Concrete Cabin / Hamran/Johansen ArkitekterSave this picture!Barin Ski Resort / RYRA StudioSave this picture!Image gallerySee allShow lessAbout this authorJonathan YeungAuthorCite: Jonathan Yeung. Unreal Engine 5 - Turn In Place - Action RPG #144
Project Files: https://www.patreon.com/posts/117600964 . This is the 144th episode of the new tutorial series on Action RPG game using Gameplay Ability System. Here we will implement a way to turn the character in place with an animation when the character is focused on an opponent. In this game, when the characters engage in combat, they are locked onto the closest opponent in the level and keep focus on the enemy. Earlier we were using a method that simply manually rotate the character through code to keep gaze towards the opponent. But here we will do the rotation through turn in place animations. Animations are sponsored by: https://www.ramsterzanimations.com/ https://www2.unrealengine.com/marketplace/en-US/product/greatsword-anims Full Playlist : Action RPG series with gameplay ability system: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNTm9yU0zou7XnRx5MfBbZnfMZJqC6ixz // ! https://www.patreon.com/codelikeme Patrons will have access to project files of all the stuff I do in the channel and other extra benefitsJoin this channel to get access to perks:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClb6Jh9EBV7a_Nm52Ipll_Q/join Like my facebook page for more content : https://www.facebook.com/gamedevelopersclub/ Follow me on twitter : https://twitter.com/CodeLikeMe2 Follow me on reddit : https://www.reddit.com/user/codelikeme #CodeLikeMe #unrealengine #ue5 #ue4 #indiegamedev
