  • Justice League Unlimited does the mature Batman cartoon job better than Caped Crusader
    www.polygon.com
Nostalgia isnt all its cracked up to be. This months Batman: The Caped Crusader was billed as the grownup version of beloved and groundbreaking 90s show Batman: The Animated Series, made by B:TAS co-creator Bruce Timm, producers Matt Reeves and J.J. Abrams, liberated from Saturday morning cartoon censors, and backed by the talent of some all-time Batman comics writers. And while the show certainly had the Animated Series look, it was neither a direct continuation nor a strong relaunch. Timms crew were free to say whatever they wanted, but didnt have much to say in the end. Sometimes you just cant go home again. But what if I told you theres already a more mature version of Batman: The Animated Series, with hour-long episodes like a live-action drama, multi-season plotting, and fresher animation than Caped Crusader. Its episodic, but its characters keep a solid emotional continuity, and while its appropriate for kids, its got multiple layers and references for adult audiences to chew on.If youre looking for a better Batman: The Caped Crusader, you should watch Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, which are available right now on Netflix for your marathon pleasure.Premiering in 2001, Justice League was a direct continuation of the DC Animated Universe setting, which began with 1992s Batman: The Animated Series and continued in Superman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, and Batman Beyond and in large part, it had all the same talent working behind the scenes. Artist Bruce Timm, writer Paul Dini, producers Rich Fogel and Glen Murakami, voice actors Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Clancy Brown, Ron Perlman, Arleen Sorkin, Michael Ironside, and Michael Dorn, all returned to reprise their various roles and duties. But Justice League wasnt a half hour, one-and-done episodic series hitting the waves at 9am on Saturday mornings. Airing in prime-time slots on Cartoon Network, every episode of the series was part of a two-part story hacking the half-hour animated standard into an hour-long adventure series. The core cast began with Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Hawkgirl, the Martian Manhunter, Wally Wests Flash, and John Stewarts Green Lantern, but two seasons into the show, Cartoon Network asked for a rebrand and expanded the mandate. In Justice League Unlimited, the full breadth of DC Comics superhero roster was welcome on the Justice League, not just the founding seven. Episodes were knocked down to half hour slots again, but the shows crew found a new way to think big. For the first and only time in the settings history, a DC Animated Universe show started delivering season-long story arcs; placing dominoes, foreshadowing reveals, and paying off setups from weeks before. And while each episode was still appropriate for kids, the show writers were not immune to the thrill of including references that only adults would really pick up on like 1950s gender and racial prejudice, a time-lost Martian Manhunter being brought before Nazi physician Josef Mengele for experimentation, or canonically establishing that the Flash is a more attentive lover than Lex Luthor. So if you want a Batman fix this weekend, queue up Justice League (2001) on Netflix. Now, you might have to give it a few episodes to get going, but if you can stick around through the early middle-weight stuff, the show will pay out dividends. Aquaman cutting his own hand off to save his infant son, an alt-timeline Superman who lobotomizes his opponents with laser vision, a collection of killer romantic subplots, the Batman of Justice League: Unlimited traveling through time and meeting the elderly Bruce Wayne and the future Batman of Batman Beyond, Lex Luthors season-long presidential campaign, and a direct adaptation of one of the greatest Superman stories ever told, For the Man Who Has Everything. So maybe its not the spooky procedural that makes you feel just like you did when you watched Batman: The Animated Series for the first time. But, then again, neither is Batman: The Caped Crusader!

  • What to Do When the Tips of Your Plants Leaves Turn Brown
    lifehacker.com
It sucks finding brown leaf-tips on your little plant baby: You know its your fault, but youre not sure what youve done wrong, and its not like your plant can tell you. To find out why the leaf-tips turned brown on your houseplant, youll have to do some botanical detective work to get to the root of the matter (get it?), but its often an easy-to-solve problem caused by one of the following. Not watering correctly can make plant leaves turn brownBrown leaf-tips can indicate that you are not watering your plant enough, that you're watering it too much, or you're not watering at the right time. You have to get to know your plants needs. Theres no one-size-fits all approach: Some like it dry, some wet, but for most, you can tell whether they need water by checking the soil. Bone dry soil means add water. Damp soil means youre good. But too much water is bad too: Brown leaves and leaf-tips can also be caused by overwatering. You can quickly diagnose whether youre giving your plant too much or too little water by noting the overall condition of its leaves. Overwatered plants tend to have limp leaves, while under-watered ones feel dry or crispy. Even if youre watering just the right amount, brown-tipped leaves can be caused by the kind of water youre using. If youre using softened water, youre adding a little salt every time you break out the watering can. Try switching to distilled or filtered water instead. Lack of humidity can make leaves turn brownDried-out tips on your houseplants leaves can also be caused by too little humidity in your home. Maybe the air in your house is dry due to how youre heating it, or the area you live may be experiencing a dry spell. Either way, you gotta add a little moisture to your plants environment. One way to do this is to group it together with other plants, so as one plant is exhaling moisture, the others are taking it in. Another solution is to put your plant on a tray, plate, or saucer filled with pebbles and water. The evaporation of the water can provide a localized moisture pocket for your plant to thrive within. Not fertilizing correctly can make plant leaves turn brownIf your plants leaf-tips look burned, dark green, or reddish purple, they might not be getting enough phosphorus. Yellow or brown along the edges of older leaves, yellowing between veins, spotting, and curling leaves can all indicate a potassium deficiency, and that means you have a fertilizer problem. Adding a slow-release fertilizer when youre potting is a good solution, but you might need to add a little fertilizer boost occasionally. Before you just throw in a bunch of fertilizer and hope for the best, know that brown, burned, or discolored leaf-tips can also be caused by too much fertilizer (make up your mind, plant!). Some kinds of fertilizers add salt that builds up in the soil over time, resulting in tip-burn. If you notice a white crust on the soil, saucers, or on the side of your pot, it could be salt build-up. If so, flush the soil by putting the pot in the sink and watering it until the soil is fully soaked and the water runs through. Repeat this a few times to really wash that salt out of the dirt. Or you could hit the reset button and repot with fresh soil, which you should be doing every 12 to 18 months for most plants anyway.Snip away the brown leavesOnce youve diagnosed the cause of your plants discolored leaves, its time to put this unpleasantness behind you and cut away the brown parts. Using sharp scissors, cut along the leafs natural shape, leaving a thin brown area around the cut. Once the new healthy leaves grow, it should look as if it was never brown to begin with. Grow a different plantIf you simply cant fix your plants leaf problems, maybe your reach exceeded your grasp with this species and you should grow something easier. Try growing one of these unkillable plants as you level-up your home-gardening kills.

  • The US lays out a road safety plan that will see cars 'talk' to each other
    www.engadget.com
The US Department of Transportation has laid out a nationwide road safety plan [PDF] that will lead to cars communicating with each other. The agency is hoping that broadly deploying vehicle-to-everything (V2X) tech will boost its "commitment to pursue a comprehensive approach to reduce the number of roadway fatalities to zero." The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 40,990 people died in motor vehicle crashes last year.V2X enables vehicles to stay in touch with each other as well as pedestrians, cyclists, other road users and roadside infrastructure. It lets them share information such as their position and speed, as well as road conditions. They'd be able to do so in situations with poor visibility, such as around corners and in dense fog, NPR notes.A US-wide rollout will require an array of mobile, in-vehicle and roadside tech that can communicate efficiently and securely while protecting people's personal information, the DoT said in its National V2X Deployment Plan. The agency said smaller-scale deployments of V2X across the country have demonstrated safety benefits. Safety advocates claim the tech could prevent hundreds of thousands of crashes and mitigate the impact of collisions that do occur by reducing the speed of impact. The timeline for the DoT's plan extends to 2036, by which time it hopes to have fully deployed V2X across the National Highway System, for the top 75 metro areas to have the tech enabled at 85 percent of signalized intersections and to have 20 vehicle models that are V2X capable. In the shorter term, the agency aims to have V2X tech installed across 20 percent of the National Highway System and 25 percent of signalized intersections in major metro areas by 2028.It won't be an easy task, as a wide range of stakeholders have to play a part, including the Federal Communications Commission, which the DoT says will have to determine rules about spectrum allocation. Automaker suppliers (which will build V2X-enabled components), freight operators and app developers are also players in the DoT's vision. There are some concerns, particularly in terms of cybersecurity and how to cover the costs of rolling out the tech (though the Federal Highway Administration recently announced nearly $60 million in grants related to V2X). But V2X has the potential to prevent thousands of deaths and serious injuries."The Department has reached a key milestone today in laying out a national plan for the transportation industry that has the power to save lives and transform the way we travel, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg said in a statement. The Department recognizes the potential safety benefits of V2X, and this plan will move us closer to nationwide adoption of this technology."This plan is a vital first step towards realizing the full lifesaving potential of this technology technology that could prevent up to 615,000 crashes," National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said. The NTSB has determined that V2X deployments could have prevented many fatal crashes over the last few decades, Homendy noted. The agency has been advocating for the tech since 1995.As you might imagine, then, V2X is hardly a new concept. Several automakers including Audi, Toyota and Volkswagen have long been working on ways for their cars to communicate with each other and city infrastructure, in part because that plays a factor in autonomous driving. There were efforts under the Obama administration to make vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication a mandatory feature of new cars. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration scuttled that plan during the Trump administration. The rollout of V2X has been slowed by "regulatory uncertainty, said John Bozzella, president and CEO of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, an automaker trade group. This is the reset button, Bozzella added, according to NPR. This deployment plan is a big deal. It is a crucial piece of this V2X puzzle. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/transportation/the-us-lays-out-a-road-safety-plan-that-will-see-cars-talk-to-each-other-170043265.html?src=rss
