• Games Inbox: Was The Games Awards 2024 a disappointment?
    metro.co.uk
The Witcher 4 -not out soon (YouTube)The Tuesday letters page is still confused about the Xbox multiformat policy, as a reader imagines what gaming will be like in five years. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.ukPLEASE NOTE: We are currently preparing our content for over the Christmas period and will need a number of Readers Features, so if youve been meaning to write one but never quite got round to it we could do with as many as possible before Monday, December 23.Second impressionsIve had a few days to contemplate it now and Im not sure The Games Awards was actually as good as it first seemed. Its not the fault of the event, which I thought was the most enjoyable to watch that its been, but just that all the announcements were kind of underwhelming. The Witcher 4 was probably the biggest deal but that just underlined that it wont be out for many years. Naughty Dogs game was technically big news but it wasnt a very exciting trailer. More Elden Ring is always welcome, but I agree with the reader yesterday that it was probably just repurposed DLC.Things like Onimusha and kami 2 are all well and good but theyre years away too. There was really very little thats coming out soon or will solve the problem of so few big name games are coming out next year. The lack of GTA 6 and the Switch 2 really hurt it, especially as no new GTA 6 trailer means a delay is now possible. Im not sure Id rule one out for the Switch 2 either.Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo all need to have their own showcases pronto next year. The Game Awards has done what it can, but its not enough.TitusJust talkMore than ever I just dont understand why Microsoft isnt clear about what its planning to do with multiformat games. I heard it explained that the reason it seems so random at the moment is that some studios are better set up for making multiformat games than others, and so Microsoft are just letting it happen organically, before they make it mandatory in the future.Thats okay, if thats true I get it and that sounds perfectly reasonable. So if thats the case why not just tell us, rather than leave it to some self-important insider that may or may not be right? Its the same problem with Sony: a total lack of communication that makes them seem either aloof or incompetent, and usually both. Why cannot they see this, is what I have to wonder. Whats wrong with having a State of Play, or whatever Xbox calls theirs, and just explaining what theyre doing, instead of this endless speculation, which surely they must see is doing them more harm than good.GorfGood timingEnjoyed Laggers Readers Feature at the weekend, where he said he will only play shorter games due to not having the time for anything where the main story will take longer than 10 hours. Im in a pretty similar situation, and whilst I do enjoy a longer game, these are few and far between. For example, I played Zelda: Breath Of The Wild during lockdown, Final Fantasy 7 Remake two years ago in that blissful period between jobs, and Rebirth earlier this year when I was lucky enough to get that time again. Not sure when Ill be able to play the finale (surely, given its themes, to be called Reunion?) its not like I can plan my career around game releases!Theres been loads of games out in the last few years that Ill never get round to, most recent of which is the amazing looking Metaphor: ReFantazio, but I just dont have 80-odd hours to put into it. Well, I do, but for me thatd be over a period of about six months. Like Lagger, I generally prefer something I can complete in a handful of sessions, or something I can play co-op with my wife (were currently playing though Lovers In A Dangerous Spacetime, which I can highly recommend).Enjoying the new look of the site by the way and the increased number of more in-depth pieces (particularly liked the feature on why there arent more games based in the real world a few weeks ago) keep up the good work! And thanks for another year of great coverage still the best on the internet in my opinion, and with an excellent community. Merry Christmas to you all!JulianGC: Thank you very much. And youre right, Lovers In A Dangerous Spacetime is a great co-op game.Email your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukDawn French Of WarMy Christmas letter submission:Just wanted to share my favourite Names In Games:Tom RaiderNormans SkyAlan Is AwakeMark Is The NinjaGary & Mark Of The WolvesRachel & Clark: Drift ApartAnd a takeaway curry bonus:Armored Korma IV: Fries and a RubiconBllGC: Normans Sky is amazing.3D in two dimensionsAre you doing a review of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Ritas Rewind? Id seen mixed reviews and its not cheap for this sort of retro styled game, so I was hoping you were going to review it.It looked great in the previews, with the super scaler style sections looking like peak late 80s to early 90s Sega arcade games before polygons took over.PEGC: Your wish is our command.Time travelIm about to open a caf and will be working six to six every day and then doing overtime on top of that back of house. I dont think Ill have time for video games anymore. Its a five year lease and I hope to come out the other side with a little bit of cash and some free time again. What do I want to see in five years time when I return to my favourite hobby?PlayStation 6 I guess this will be out by 2030. I just hope I can run games at full spec and no loading times. My PlayStation 5 got a bit choppy while playing Cult Of The Lamb the other day not exactly a graphical powerhouse of a game.VR Ive had a few VR headsets but Im looking forward to what will be available in five years time.I want something with no wires, that works outside. The only game I want is Battlefield on VR helicopters, tanks and snipers. That would be amazing.Im hoping at least one amazing new IP pops up out of nowhere and takes the world by storm. The last one for me was Demons Souls and Im a bit bored of that style now.Really, I just hope VR takes off in a big way but dont think it will until the games are addictive enough, have precise movement capture, and are graphically on par with other consoles. They also need to figure out how to run around and feel immersed instead of just pressing up.Guess Im going to miss Final Fantasy 7 remake disc 3. I got bored of disc 2 and stopped playing in the jungle area. And Im going to miss so much Call Of Duty that when I get back to it Ill probably not be able to keep up anymore.See you in five years.Merry ChristmasTommyfatfingersGC: Good luck!Northern delightsBit late to the party here but was looking through for something casual to play in my PSN library and noticed Id downloaded Thank Goodness Youre Here. Well, what a delightfully strange and wonderfully funny game.Absolutely bonkers, done in two sittings, on the same grim dark Sunday afternoon. The humours non-stop, the jokes are easy to miss, but the rhythm based bit at the end had me laughing out loud and I found myself tapping the X button after it had finished, brilliant.ZombiekickerHope for the futureI enjoyed the 2024 Game Awards show, as I knew I would, and there was quite a bit to come away with. Its always a great occasion and Geoff Keighley is always on target, and I get a good feeling from him. The music performances are always good, with the chosen tunes matching the gaming medium and Snoop Dogg, as we know, being a gamer himself, was always going to be a hit.The best reveal for me though, game-wise, was kami 2 and, quite frankly, was to me a game that didnt need a sequel, as the original had such a complete end game that the tale of kami was and is the perfect game! But there are a lot of legendary tales in Japanese mythology that quite frankly I would love to see how this new game will interpret them and along with the unique art and gameplay visuals is definitely going to be on my list of interest for the future.Death Stranding 2 is good to have been selected for a nominee list, but how far in production that is at the moment, unfortunately Hideo Kojima did not say. But good to know its in development and obviously the mind-bending nature of it is going to be awesome to experience, like the first game.Astro Bot definitely deserves a win, as gameplay is what makes this game so good and that is why we play in the first place, for most of us. I said before how the clever introduction experience to the PlayStation 5 was a pleasure to experience, and the fact a full game with even more amazing depth of gameplay is now available and won Game of the Year is very encouraging indeed.Another category I like is best gaming score and soundtrack and of course no arguments from me that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth took the winning position for this section. I recently saw the concert version in the Royal Albert Hall with full motion videos on the big screen behind the orchestra of which was my forth experience of this show and definitely one of my favourites. The FFVII Rebirth soundtrack fulfills everything I want from a soundtrack and will be very hard to beat when part 3 is released.Other notable mentions go to The Outer Worlds 2, Sid Meiers Civilisation 7 introduction, and obviously not forgetting Harrison Ford taking the surprise star role stage appearance, which was up there with Keanu Reeves a few years ago. This is especially true on the back of the very successful Indiana Jones And The Great Circle game, which has definitely remained true and loyal in regards to the source of inspiration and the requirements for the needed gameplay to make this a proper exciting and immersive game. So, heres to another year gone by, a successful 2024, and a great way to end with this most awesome of entertainments proving once again how relevant our hobby still is and will continue to be. Good times again.AlucardGC: Death Stranding 2 is supposed to be out next year.Inbox also-ransRequesting some Inbox magic to have a modified cast to TV button on Switch 2, which allows for a secondary display on the handheld for inventory, maps, etc. but most importantly an Advance Wars: Dual Strike port/sequel please.Bad EditI think the easiest way to judge how good a game is, is how hooked you are in progressing it. Going by the fact Ive just spent most of my free time this weekend playing Indiana Jones, I think its safe to say its a really good game.TimMore TrendingEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukThe small printNew Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend. • Without Ugly Sonic, Thered Be No Sonic Movie Franchise
    gizmodo.com
The face that launched oh-so-many memes and ultimately a change in Sonics appearance in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies has gone from something Paramount Pictures would want to forget to an important touchstone of the franchises history. And its all thanks to the fans of the beloved Sega video games legacy who knew that Ugly Sonic wasnt their Sonic. During an interview with the Hollywood Reporter at the premiere for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the films voice of Sonic, Ben Schwartz, talked about how Ugly Sonic is something he embraces now: Maybe sometimes you need a little push to really look in the mirror and to hear the fans, to then really figure out if you want to adjust. And we did. It was really as if an internet audience composed of Sonic fans and casual moviegoers gave out a collective scream in horror at the teeth, the eyes, and just sheer eerie countenance of the movies botched abomination upgrade on Sonics classic look. Thankfully the studio and creative team quickly worked to reshape the icon into his real form. How often can you think of a film that really listens to fans and the studio takes money and time to change it because they think it would better the film? I think its rarely ever happened before, if ever, Schwartz said. But Ugly Sonic never truly died. The memes continue and audiences are quick to quake in social discourse fear thanks to Ugly Sonic PTSD when it comes to turning beloved characters into live-action. One Piece fans are holding their breath that Netflix doesnt pull an Ugly Sonic on live-action Tony Tony Chopper for example in season two. And both How to Train Your Dragons Toothless and Lilo & Stitchs Stitch retained their original cuteness in recent teasers for their upcoming live-action features. It truly is all thanks to Ugly Sonics cautionary tale, because hey: if it aint broke, dont fix it. Ugly Sonic would go on to be featured as a supporting character in Disneys 2022 hybrid film live-action Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers and hes most recently been seen in a Christmas sweater officially released by Paramount Pictures in a giveaway. At the premiere, Sonic 3 director Jeff Fowler also gave Ugly Sonic his due: It was out of the ashes of Ugly Sonic that this beautiful trilogy of films, this phoenix, had to rise. It was a necessary sacrifice but yes, thank you Ugly Sonic for the memories. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 opens in theaters this Friday. Want more io9 news? • Heres What the Bluey Movie Means for the Future of the Show
    gizmodo.com
Finally, theres an update on the future of Bluey. Fans of the beloved show, which centers around the everyday adventures of the family of Heeler dogs and their canine community and was created by Joe Brumm and Ludo Studios, now have some answers about whats next. Its pretty huge but comes with some bittersweet news. After its pretty final-feeling season finale at the start of the year, which ended with a time jump into Blueys future as a mom, fans were left with so many burning questions. Not even the drop of mini-sodes gave us any sort of clue about whether we were getting more Bluey seasons. Thankfully today Ludo Studios announced that its official: Bluey is getting a movie! In a statement released on the official website, its been confirmed that the BBC and the Walt Disney Company have partnered up with the shows creators to bring Bluey to the big screen in 2027. The film is set to be CG, which we hope means it will elevate the shows 2D lookin the style ofThe Wild Robot, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, or Disneys Wishand not that it will be fully CG animated. Thats our first gut reaction as fans of the animation, along with the excitement that its also staying mostly in-house as a Ludo Studio production in collaboration with BBC Studios, with Brumm on board as the writer and director. The creator shared, I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on The Sign in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that. Ive always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together. Im excited to continue to partner with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell and the team at BBC Studios, and Dana Walden, Alan Bergman, and Disney to bring this new Bluey story to the big screen. However, Bluey: The Movie will mark Brumms final touch on the series he created as hell be exiting the Bluey team after. In a trifficult to read letter he expanded on the reasons why hell be leaving after the film. I always said I wouldnt keep making the show if I thought I couldnt make any new season as good as the last, Brumm wrote. This would have been the case for me with a potential season four, so Ive decided to take a break from my involvement in the TV series. In the event I cant wrap my head around doing more seasons myself, The Sign will mark my TV finale for Bluey and I wrote it as such. The Bluey movie is based on a resurfaced idea he had that inspired his cinematic coda on whats currently the biggest cartoon on the planet. He continued. Bluey has completely changed my life. Its been an immensely satisfying thing to be a part of, more than I can really put into words. To walk away from it while its at such a height will seem crazy to some but, for now, I am finding it difficult to reach back genuinely into that four to six year old world and write authentically. To be honest, that makes at least this Bluey fan a little nervous about the pressure maybe being put on Ludo for more of the show by BBC and Disney. But at least theres a sense of relief that Bluey might still continue on at its original home, just without Brumm. My Bluey crew and all the creative people in my life completely understand my decision. Working with that wonderful group of people has been the absolute highlight of my animation career and I hope Bluey on their CV is a badge of pride for them, he said. To be clear, this is not an announcement about the end of the show, but it is an acknowledgment that my focus will be on the film.Brumm emphasizing that this announcement doesnt mean the show is ending, gives us some hope the showrunning and writing might just now include more voices who love these characters. The year 2027 is a little too far away and its hard to imagine a little over a year without more Bluey, so well be keeping an eye out for any word from Disney and Ludo about whether were getting another season or more mini-sodes to hold us over in between. We hope that whatever happens, whoever remains Blueys stewards are allowed to be creative and truthful to the characters we love without feeling like a cash grab. If they go full steam ahead on just the film, that would be okay toojust dont mind us throwing a Muffin Heeler-sized fit over here.Bluey: The Movie will be released in 2027. Want more io9 news? Check out when to expect the latest Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek releases, whats next for the DC Universe on film and TV, and everything you need to know about the future of Doctor Who.

  • Interpol Says People Arent Reporting Online Scams for Fear of Being Called Pigs
    gizmodo.com
By AJ Dellinger Published December 17, 2024 | Comments (6) | Man using credit card and laptop for online shopping damircudic via Getty Images The term pig butchering has successfully raised public awareness of online scams that can drain people of their savings and financial livelihood. Unfortunately, the term has failed to get people to come forward and report these crimes, in part because no victim wants to be called a pig, according to Interpol. Interpol (who are technically also pigs, if you think about it) is asking governments and organizations to stop using pig butchering as a catchall term for online scams. The primary reason: the phrase, while evocative and attention-grabbing, puts the blame on the victims rather than the criminals. That makes sense given the origin of the phrase, which didnt come from law enforcement or cybersecurity experts but from the scammers themselves. In place of pig butchering, which has become a big umbrella term, Interpol recommends using more specific language that focuses on the actions of the criminal actors rather than the victims. For example, terms like investment scam or romance baiting more accurately define the fraud being committed and dont place additional stigma on the people who are being preyed upon.Little as the change may seem, it can make a difference. Language is charged in all sorts of ways that we might not realize. For example: saying a person reported a crime instead of saying they alleged a crime happened can provide comfort for the reporter. To report suggests that it happened, while alleging a crime suggests a level of doubt. Studies have also found that the language used to describe someone involved in a crime can lead to more negative associations. When a person is referred to as a felon, people are more likely to have negative reactions to them, while a person with a felony conviction produces more positive responses. All that said, its not too hard to figure out why people who just had their bank accounts siphoned down to zero would rather not be called pigs who got fattened up for the slaughter by some sweet-talking scammer. If Interpols change in language results in more reports of criminal activity, its a win. Americans were defrauded out of more than $10 billion in 2023, according to the FTC, including $4.6 billion to investment scams and $1.14 billion from romance baiting. The FBI found that online scams were up 22% from 2022 and likely still climbing thanks to cybercriminals increasingly utilizing AI tools to carry out their schemes.Ideally, more reports of these scams will help agencies like Interpol crackdown on the perpetrators, who have created more victims than just those they steal money from. Reporting from the Wall Street Journal and Wired have highlighted the labor behind some of these scams is carried out by people who have been trafficked and forced to work or face beatings and torture.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Matthew Gault Published December 12, 2024 By Lucas Ropek Published December 12, 2024 By Ed Cara Published December 9, 2024 By Lucas Ropek Published December 4, 2024 By Matt Novak Published December 4, 2024 By Todd Feathers Published November 18, 2024

Situated in a residential condominium in Guaruj, a city about an hour and a half from So Paulo, this summer retreat takes advantage of the main view to create solutions that prioritize privacy and enjoyment of the living and leisure spaces. This beach house was commissioned by a long-standing client of the office, a couple who spends their vacations on the coast with their family and friends. During our first visit to the site, we understood that we should explore the back of the plot, which offers a view of the sea and where the access to the beach is located. On the other side, the front, accessed through an internal street of the condominium with constant traffic, needed to be more closed-off, while the side facades, in close proximity to neighboring properties, required visual protection. From this analysis, the image of a long, slender volume perpendicular to the access road, supported by slender eaves, emerged on the small plot corresponding to the buildable perimeter. Maintaining the horizontality of the proportion from the exterior and consequently reducing the overall height of the building, we worked with the idea of a half-level. This solution breaks the rigidity of the interior space and allows for different ceiling heights throughout the program.Save this picture!Ensuring privacy for the residents, upon arrival, a rhythmic ensemble of vertical wooden brises-soleils made of Accoya wood envelops the facade of the upper volume, which is supported by slender circular-section pillars located at the ends, providing protection for the cars from rain and direct sunlight. With a cozy atmosphere, the entrance hall is materialized through a tunnel with a height of 2.25 meters (approx. 7 ft) covered in gray-washed Freij wood slats and brises-soleils of the same material, revealing glimpses of the tropical garden that surrounds the residence. The space opens up to a large double-height area of 6.40 meters (approx. 20 ft) illuminated by a zenithal opening. The block located in the transition from the entrance to the living area houses the powder room, storage, and service areas. One of the programmatic premises was that the living and dining rooms should be spacious enough to accommodate guests. With this in mind, slender pillars resting on the ends create a generous central open space spanning 14 meters in width.Save this picture!Stone-clad walls, slightly lower than the ceiling, protect the interior from direct views of the neighbors, enclosing the support structures and extending through the living area to the veranda. Between the vertical (walls) and horizontal (ceiling) planes, the enclosure is made of glass panels, adding lightness to the ensemble. It is worth emphasizing that these projections hide a small storage area and a powder room with external access, as well as niches for a gas fireplace and the gourmet veranda counter. Creating a play of solids and voids, a volume covered in wooden slats, like a monolithic structure, houses the kitchen, pantry, and service area. Visual communication between inside and outside is ensured through large glass windows, which, when retracted, integrate the living rooms with the veranda, gourmet area, and pool, creating a continuous axis. Reinforcing this concept, the materials that cover the interior extend to the exterior: granite on the floors and Freij wood slats on the ceiling. The direction of the slats directs the residents gaze towards the panoramic view.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Highlighting the harmonious relationship between architecture and landscape, the main spaces open towards the privileged view of the sea. From the pool, positioned on a plateau elevated a few meters above beach level, the residents enjoy the panoramic view. Above the double-height space in the interior, an inviting staircase connects the three floors, designed to create the most enjoyable transition possible. We positioned the staircase above an internal garden, illuminated by a large skylight. This axis ensures that a large part of the house is permanently illuminated throughout the day. On the second level, with openings towards the street, we have the entertainment room, equipped with a home theater and game area. Its mid-level position allows the residents to contemplate the horizon from the seating area, emphasizing the visual connection to the landscape from all floors.Save this picture!A block covered in wooden panels mimics the support powder room and a guest suite. In this project, the roof is divided into two levels, with a slight difference in height, creating a linear gap with a glass closure that poetically frames the treetops, noticeable from the circulation gallery of the bedrooms. On the upper floor, five suites are distributed along the central corridor. The childrens and guest bedrooms are located on the sides and protected on the exterior by wooden panels with folding openings, which preserve privacy without blocking the entry of natural light and ventilation. When fully opened, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, combined with a guardrail of the same material, maximize the illumination. The panels in the bathroom facade are fixed, while the ones in the private areas of the childrens bedrooms partially transform into pergolas covered with glass, providing illumination for the bath countertop and bathing area.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Unveiling the gradient where the sky meets the sea, the master suite is strategically positioned facing the beach. Like the side facades, wooden brises-soleils are supported by slender eaves, which, when retracted, bring the landscape inside. For greater comfort in terms of temperature and lighting, we developed a system of double sliding panels in front of the bedroom windows. When closed, these panels interrupt the passage of light and air. In terms of materials, at the clients request, who gave us considerable freedom in the development of the proposal, we opted for the use of natural materials in shades of gray. Accoya wood panels chemically treated for increased durability in outdoor exposure cover the facades, entrance hall, and interior volumes. Freij wood slats line the ceiling, while the stone covers the perimeter walls and the floors of all social spaces. This combination creates a welcoming sensation in harmony with the contemporary aesthetic language that defines the project.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeJacobsen ArquiteturaOfficePublished on December 17, 2024Cite: "JO Residence / Jacobsen Arquitetura" [Residncia JO / Jacobsen Arquitetura] 17 Dec 2024.
