  • Cinch up your waders, Mystery Flesh Pit National Park is open for business
    www.polygon.com
The National Park Service, tasked with protecting Americas most important ecological treasures, like the Grand Canyon, Crater Lake, and several hundred linear feet of stainless steel-reinforced Mississippi River shoreline, has an even more unusual plot of land to maintain beginning in 2025. Its a place thats fairly dark, extremely moist, and entirely fictional, called Mystery Flesh Pit National Park. The viral art project, which blew up on Reddit during the COVID-19 pandemic-era lockdowns, is finally being turned into a tabletop role-playing game. Polygon sat down with the creators to learn more.As it turns out, Flesh Pit is largely Texas fault.I am from West Texas, admitted its creator, Trevor Roberts, in a recent interview with Polygon. [Specifically a place where its] very rural, very sparse, [with residential areas] mixed with the oil industry and fracking activity.Coming from such a large, flat, mixed-use area where the community was very concerned about all things under the ground, the idea for Flesh Pit came somewhat organically.I was getting my lunch together [in the break room at work, and] I was looking at this horrible little grapefruit thing beginning to rot, Roberts said. Like any normal person, he whipped out his phone to capture the moment. I was like, Man, what if you were that tiny and were standing on the edge of this thing and it was like a big crater? [What if the Grand Canyon] was all pulpy and nasty? So I took a little low-angle picture [], popped back to my desk, opened up Photoshop, and started messing around with it.Of course, Roberts is not just an artist. A trained aerospace engineer, hes worked at both the Johnson Space Center in Texas and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Thats where he developed a taste for art and design, which he went back to school for before ending up in the break room of an architectural firm astride a calcified citrus fruit. So what happened inside his copy of Photoshop was, in all actuality, remarkable and unique. Once it hit Reddit, things really began to take off. Before long hed developed lore and a backstory centered around the Permian Basin Super Organism (PBSO), a colossal creature whose gummy gubbins make for harrowing hikes literally into the bowels of the Earth.A lot of the fans of the Flesh Pit [] had been asking about [a game of some kind], Roberts said. There had been some fan-made modules for Dungeons & Dragons and other systems, but he simply didnt have the expertise to take them any further. Thats when he was approached by Christopher Robin Negelein.I feel really privileged, Negelein told Polygon. Thats because Roberts basically handed over everything he had created so far, and then gave the game designer permission to pile even more content on top of it.Why Chris convinced me was he had a very realistic approach to it, Roberts said. Its going to take this much, its going to take at least a year to do this. Lets set up a Kickstarter, and heres the budget, and heres this. His thoroughness in detail really convinced me, like, OK, he knows what hes doing. Hes delivered projects. The projects that Roberts is referring to? Only a few hundred thousand words for Monte Cook Games wildly popular Cypher System.Negelein recalled how over decades of work as a journalist, marketer, and nurse he had been trying to break into fiction writing. He finally got his big break thanks to a mentor, author Adam-Troy Castro, who connected him with the team behind Esper Genesis, a science fiction setting designed to be compatible with Dungeons & Dragons popular 5th edition. That eventually turned into a long-term gig with Monte Cook Games. They did their own community content program, Negelein said, and at one point [] 50% of it was my output. [] That got me enough of a recognition with Monte Cook Games that when they decided they were going to do their own version of an open license, they got ahold of me two to three months early before the public release. The Kickstarter campaign for the Flesh Pit RPG launched not long after, resulting in a successful crowdfunding campaign and the final retail product which will be available for purchase beginning this month.Mystery Flesh Pit National Park: The RPG is a lavishly illustrated 190-page game book available through DriveThruRPG containing all the rules you need to play the full game. The joy begins with character creation, where players choose a type to serve as the core of their PC. They might choose to be a security agent hired by the Department of the Interior to intervene when something unusual happens underground. Players could also become an engineer, one of the many full-time employees and contractors who work at the park. There are park guides, of course, but also marketeers who work closely across the organization to control the publics perception of the Flesh Pit. Finally, theres the Men in Black, secret agents who work behind the scenes to ensure the public never finds out the sinister forces truly pulling the strings in the background. In this way, Negelein explained, game masters merely have to create an otherworldly event that occurs at the Mystery Flesh Pit National Park. Then the players at the table can create characters to deal with that event from any perspective they prefer. They could be trying to prevent the event from happening, or simply trying to conceal the event from prying eyes. The event could be happening to them in real time, or they could be sent down below to deal with the gruesome aftermath. Whatever path they choose, the asymmetrical tools inherent to the Cypher System will be there to guide them on their journey.Roberts, for his part, just seems elated to finally see his internet-based artistic side project becoming a game that people can experience in the real world.I think Chris has done a fantastic job of riding that very kind of thin line, Roberts said. Its horror, and its scary, and dangerous, and thrilling. But also, theres a lot of on-the-nose ridiculousness to it. This is an absurd, silly kind of setting, and so its fun to see people engage with those two kinds of sides of it. Mystery Flesh Pit National Park: The RPG is available starting today on DriveThruRPG, with physical versions ranging from $38.95 to $58.95 and digital versions for $16.95.

  • Superman Returns teaser is one of the best Superman films ever made
    www.polygon.com
Bryan Singers 2006 movie Superman Returns is infamous. A lukewarm, direct follow-up to a 30-year-old superhero franchise from none of the same creative team feels like an idea out of the 2020s, not the 2000s. Returns did halfway decent business in theatrical release, with a $390 million international box-office take. That wasnt bad enough to call it a flop, but wasnt good enough to warrant a sequel especially not after Singer hugely overran his budget on a troubled production. Warner Bros. moved on to reboot Superman with Zack Snyders Man of Steel, and the rest is history. And yet. With James Gunns Superman on the horizon, Im inevitably thinking about one of my favorite Superman movies, one that stirs my emotions and gets my heart going pitter-pat every time I return to watch it. Im not embarrassed about this, because Im right. Not Superman Returns itself hell no. Im talking about the first teaser trailer for Superman Returns.I dont know what studio grunt edited this trailer together back in the mid-aughts, but Great Scott! The shot compositions! Sunrise over the Kent mailbox! Young Clark Kent leaping through a Kansas cornfield! The expert timing of it all, interwoven with Marlon Brandos voice and John Williams music! Its a minute and a half long, the first 20 seconds are just logos, and its still a work of art. This can only barely be attributed to the actual movie Superman Returns. What makes the trailers array of footage work, emotionally, rests 99.9% on the shoulders of one of the most universally acclaimed actors and most universally acclaimed film composers of the 20th century, and a suite of screenwriters whose work includes The Godfather, Bonnie and Clyde, and Kramer vs. Kramer. The recombination of Brandos Fortress of Solitude monologue, recut for brevity and impact, with the opening of Williams The Planet Krypton from Richard Donners 1978 Superman? That bird would still sing if it were played over footage of paint drying. In bringing this up while people are still picking apart every second of the teaser for James Gunns Superman, Im not trying to suggest that Gunns movie could beef it as bad as Superman Returns, where poor Brandon Routh does his best to play absentee father Superman in a sympathetic way. Im just thinking about how it isnt hard to cut a bad Superman movie into an all-time great trailer and I think thats because of Superman himself.Even though hes often eclipsed in pop culture by more stylish guys like Batman or Spider-Man, Superman has never completely left the public consciousness since his 1938 debut. Thats because the basic idea of him, and the standard imagery associated with him, are so tremendously iconic and moving. His comics can inspire great artists like Brando, Williams, Donner, Christopher Reeve, and Margot Kidder to make great work. And when that work is cut together just right it can elevate other material to heights it might not deserve on its own.Im looking forward to seeing what Superman inspires Gunn to do in his movie, and his take on the DC Universe. Especially when hes already giving Williams Superman theme the trailercore treatment hes playing the same tunes as the Superman Returns teaser, literally and figuratively. As far as Im concerned, thats a great sign. But while Im waiting for Gunns movie, I wont forget the lesson that 2006 teaser taught me: We shouldnt be swayed by the siren song of John Williams. The real proof is in the pudding, and the pudding doesnt hit theaters until July.

  • You Can Create Bluesky-Like Starter Packs on Mastodon
    lifehacker.com
Every now and then, a company comes up with an idea so good that every competitor ends up copying it. Such is the case with Bluesky's starter packs, which are now starting to spread to other social networks. Starter packs are lists of accounts and topics that make it easy for you to populate your feed with the people and things you actually want to see. Following Bluesky's lead, Threads announced last week that it's building this feature into its platform, and now third-party developers are bringing it to Mastodon as well. This is great news: On Mastodon, it is hard to find interesting new accounts because of the decentralized nature of the social network. There are many great accounts on relatively obscure instances, however, and with these starter packs, you can view them all in one place.Integrating starter packs with MastodonYou can find Mastodon starter packs on FediDevs, a site built to help people find developers on Mastodon. Since this is not an official Mastodon feature, you'll need to give FediDevs access to your Mastodon account. The site is quite transparent about these permissions and they're reasonable: It asks for read-only access to accounts and search, and read and write access to follows. With these permissions, FediDevs can see which accounts you follow and help you follow multiple accounts at once. Credit: Pranay Parab Once your account is linked to FediDevs, you can start browsing through various starter packs on the site. Take a look at the Apple and Adjacent Tech starter pack if you're interested in following accounts that post about things related to Apple.FediDevs lets you create your own starter packs as well. Go to the Create Starter Packs section and start gathering your favorite accounts. Instead of starting with a blank slate, you can actually see all the accounts you follow when you create a new starter pack. This way, you can quickly add multiple accounts and avoid having to manually search for more accounts each time. Note that you can only add accounts that are set as discoverable, which respects people's privacy. Use the search bar to find more accounts, and, once you're done, click the Finish button to launch your starter pack. It's quite easy to edit and modify starter packsthose options show up under the three-dots button below the title. You can follow all accounts in any starter pack with just one click. My only complaint is that the site displays each profile in a large card, which makes it tedious to scroll through longer lists. Not everyone wants to follow hundreds of accounts without looking at who is in those accounts, and for this, I wish there was a way to either display multiple smaller cards in a row or to simply view compact lists.

  • These Smart Home Automations Can Make Christmas Even More Magical for Kids
    lifehacker.com
We may earn a commission from links on this page.Christmas is around the corner, and if you celebrate the holiday and have kids, they're likely a little excited right about now. The holiday has all kinds of magic built in, but if youre trying to keep your kids entertained and have grown weary of managing an Elf on the Shelfs escapades, why not enlist the help of your home assistant and smart home technology? Alexa can help your kid talk to Santa Unlike other voice assistants, Alexa requires you to enable their holiday-specific functionality. You can do this by asking, Alexa, enable Hey Santa or in your Alexa app, go to Skills & games, search for Santa and click on Santa-holiday personality for Alexa.Once youve done this, you and your family can now talk to Santa just like you'd talk to Alexa. Some basic requests that work are Hey Santa, tell me a story, Hey Santa, tell me the North Pole news, Hey Santa, tell me about your reindeer, and Hey Santa, sing karaoke. Siri can answer kids questions about SantaApples voice assistant doesnt need any special activation; ask it questions about Santa, and it should be able to supply an answer that satisfies your kids. Some examples that already have been tested are Hey Siri, wheres Santa?,Hey Siri, is Santa coming?, Hey Siri, what do you want/what are you doing for Christmas?, and Hey Siri, call Santa.Google Assistant has a direct line to the North PoleLike Siri, Google Assistant is already set up to assist kids in exploring what Santa is up to. Your kids can ask Hey Google, whats happening in the North Pole? and every day, they'll get a news update from an elf, much like the Google news update adults can receive each morning. You can also have Google call Santa: Simply ask Hey Google, call Santa. Santa can also read a Christmas story when asked, or tell you about Christmas activities when you ask, Google, what Christmas activities do you have planned?Use automation to keep your hidden gifts safe from prying eyesIf you keep wrapped gifts in a closet or special room, or even under the tree, you can protect them from curious kids by using your smart home automation. First, add a vibration sensor to the stack of gifts. Then, in your home automation system (any of the above systems like Google, Homekit or Alexa will work) add an action if the sensor detects motion. You can have the lights in the room go on and off; you can sound an alarm on your assistants speakers; you can make a recording in your voice (or Santas voice!) warning the intruder to stop or Santa will deliver them coal instead. Aqara Vibration Sensor $19.99 at Amazon $21.99 Save $2.00 Shop Now Shop Now $19.99 at Amazon $21.99 Save $2.00 Use a presence sensor for Christmas morningIf you struggle with kids staying asleep Christmas morning (or at least, staying in bed) this automation will help. Youll want a presence sensor in the room with the Christmas tree and gifts. Much like the routine above, youre going to set up a routine or automation. If the presence sensor detects motion between the hours of 4am and 10am (or whatever hours your set) then perform a set of actions. This is up to you, but Id suggest a recording of Santa saying that hes still working, or your voices telling kids its not time yet. Aqara Presence Sensor FP2 $82.99 at Amazon Shop Now Shop Now $82.99 at Amazon Smart lights plus a microphone will provide an interactive light showConsider holiday lights that are smart and sound-reactive: If you stand near the lights and sing, or just have a conversation, the lights will move with your voices. Govee sells a microphone (they call it a "music sync box") for their lights, which can be used with indoor or outdoor lights. Last year I set the microphone up on the sidewalk with some kid-friendly instruments and a sign; children walking by would play the instruments into the microphone and the house would light up in response to their playing.
