Tech New iPhone auto-restart feature locks encrypted data after extended inactivity Wiping encryption keys makes it harder for cybercriminals to access sensitive information Published December 20, 2024 10:00am EST close How to factory reset your iPhone A factory reset ensures all your personal data is wiped clean. Your iPhone data just got more secure, thanks to a new feature in iOS 18.1. This update includes an important security measure designed to protect your device and its encrypted data after long periods of inactivity. An iPhone (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)Whats new?Apple has introduced an Inactivity Reboot feature in iOS 18.1, which automatically reboots your iPhone if it has been idle and unlocked for more than three days. This feature uses the Secure Enclave Processor (SEP) to monitor when your iPhone was last unlocked. If the device stays locked for an extended period, the SEP notifies the kernel, which triggers a reboot and kills the Springboard (the core of iOS). Illustration of lock on data (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)Why this mattersThe main benefit of the inactivity reboot is better data protection. By forcing a reboot after prolonged idle time, the iPhone essentially wipes encryption keys from memory. Once rebooted, the phone enters an "at rest" state. This makes it nearly impossible for cybercriminals to decrypt the data. Even if the device is left powered on for an extended period, the feature ensures that outdated forensic tools used by cybercriminals won't be able to access sensitive information. iPhones on table (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)Impact on law enforcementAlthough this new security measure is a big win for privacy, it has raised concerns with law enforcement. Specifically, they are facing more challenges when trying to unlock phones for forensic analysis. However, researcher Jiska Classen points out that three days is still enough time to coordinate steps with analysts to access the device. A police vehicle (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)How to enable the auto-restart featureTo enable this feature, all you have to do is make sure your iPhone is running iOS 18.1. Heres how to check and update:Go toSettings and tap on itClickGeneralTap onSoftware UpdateClickUpdate Now to download and install iOS 18.1WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)? Steps to update iPhones software (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)More ways to keep your iPhone secureWhile the inactivity reboot feature is a valuable security tool, its not a foolproof solution. To further protect your data, consider taking these additional steps:1. Set a strong password:Create strong passwords for your accounts and devices and avoid using the same password for multiple online accounts. Using the same password across multiple platforms will always make you more vulnerable, because if one account gets hacked, they all get hacked. Consider using apassword manager to generate and store complex passwords.2. Have strong antivirus software:The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe.Get my picks for the best 2024 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE3. • The best MagSafe battery packs of 2024: Expert tested and reviewed
    www.zdnet.com
Since we often rely on our mobile devices to shop, communicate, travel, and more, it's paramount to keep your phone's battery boosted. But most of us can't stay tethered to a wall outlet.Thankfully, you don't have to. The battery market is packed with options that can boost your phone's battery life no matter where you are. From power banks to wireless charging stations, there's something for everyone's lifestyle and charging needs. Battery packs that use MagSafe technology to magnetically attach to your phone offer a more compact solution than traditional portable power banks, so you can ditch the charging wires altogether. What's the best MagSafe battery pack right now?I and other ZDNET experts went hands-on with several of the top MagSafe battery packs (including every pick on this list), spending time testing for charge speed, function, and other features during our everyday activities. Our tested pick for the best overall MagSafe battery pack is the newly refreshed Baseus PicoGo Magnetic power bank thanks to its practical design and refined functionality. Read on to learn more about the Baseus PicoGo and which other top-tested MagSafe battery packs may be worth considering for your wants and needs. Also: We've tested every iPhone accessory on this list. Here are the best Sort by All Value Efficiency Performance Design Compatibility The best MagSafe battery packs of 2024 Show less The Baseus PicoGo has a traditional rectangular design with rounded edges and corners, a sleek finish, and indicator lights on the bottom of the pack. It's fairly average weight for a battery, and it comes in four colors (blue, white, black, and pink). It can charge at 20W with wired charging or at 15W with wireless, magnetic charging. Plus, it can charge wirelessly and with the USB-C port simultaneously for a double device boost. When I tested this pack, it increased the battery of my iPhone 14 Pro from 25% to 60% in half an hour. About 40 minutes later, the phone was back up to 80%, with half of the battery capacity still left in the pack. Two things about this battery pack piqued my interest from the get-go when I first saw the product at an NYC launch event. First, it's priced at only $50 (even less during a sale), and its kickstand feature is upside down and all around (literally). The affixed ring on the back of this pack can be used as a kickstand in any orientation (it fully rotates) or used as a phone grip. While I've seen plenty of kickstand features before, I've never seen one like this.Current Baseus PicoGo users on Amazon said they liked the indicator lights, strong magnetic grip, and battery-boosting feature that the PicoGo pack provided, giving it a 4.4/5 star rating. Other users said they were expecting more power capacity and experienced warming on their phones. Keep in mind that most battery packs do get warm to the touch, and that is expected. It's also important to note that a 5,000mAh pack is enough for most people to have on hand for top-offs or while on the go, but it isn't large enough for repetitive recharges without the unit being charged up either. It's enough to charge most smartphone models once fully (or close to it); if you need more than that, I recommend looking at larger battery packs.Baseus PicoGo Magnetic Power Bank specs: Capacity:5,000mAh|Charging Port:USB-C |Power button:YesAuthor's note: The Baseus PicGo is currently sold out on Baseus' website at the time of publication, but it is available on Amazon in select colors. Instead of the charging indicator lights being on the side, they're now more visible, located on the back of the pack. This model is also a tad slimmer and lengthier than its predecessor, making it easier to transport. And while this Belkin pack is a true embodiment of a classic brick-style battery booster, there is still a place in my heart for it because it just works so well. Similarly to many picks on this list, it provides 5,000mAh of extra juice to your phone, which is a standard capacity for many MagSafe packs. Its design, though simple, fits snugly against my phone (no bumping onto the lip of my camera lens) and remains secure. Often, you'll see some gapping between the battery and the phone due to a disturbed magnetic connection, but not with this Belkin battery pack. Its secure grip and competitive battery speak for themselves. I took this pack to a Yankees game, to several late-night outings, to work, and even on errands, and I am impressed with the charging. You can expect between a 25-30% battery boost in about an hour to your phone. What's more, is that it comes with a built-in stand that easily swings in and out -- no folding required -- and while I originally thought this would be useless, I rather enjoyed being able to prop my phone up whenever. Perhaps the best thing about this Belkin pack is that it comes in a few fun colors, a nice feature many competitors still haven't matched.Like the previous iteration, this pack is still not the slimmest design I've ever seen. But the newly upgraded design offers a more comfortable and sleek user experience that feels great in handand doesn't feel as boxy as the pack really is. Overall, I'm impressed with the new shape and think it was a much-needed facelift.Apple used to be the only retailer that sells the blue, green, pink, and sand color options right now (as well as black), but the product is no longer accessible on the Apple website, which is a downside. The color options made this a fun battery option. However, Belkin carries the black and white iterations as well as the 8k and 10k models. Regardless, Redditors who own this battery pack really like the intentional upgrades. Some Redditors said that this is a great pack to replace Apple's discontinued battery pack, too.Belkin Boostcharge Pro Qi2 Magnetic Power Bank 5K specs: Capacity:5,000mAh|Charging Port:USB-C |Power button:Yes Value 9 Efficiency 9 Performance 9 Design 9 Compatibility 8 Pros Qi2 charging Minimal warming Kickstand to prop phone Fits snug on iPhone Several color options Strong magnetic grip Recently upgraded design Clear battery indicator lights Cons Fun colors no longer available Not the sleekest option Let me start by saying that I really liked the first iteration of this battery pack (enough to have it included on this list over the last several months), and I like the newly upgraded Qi2 version even more. This new model has the USB-C connector on the side instead of the bottom of the pack, making it easier to use your phone standing upright while the pack is charging. That is, can you "add-in" this product into your life and benefit from its presence, or is it just another fad product that's too good to be true or collects dust after the buzz wears off?If we think another product is worth your money, we'll update this list or write up a spotlight review highlighting its best qualities and specifying who it's for.Plus, we are routinely scouring the web for new products that are worthy of testing, and following news on product rollouts and upgrades, and sourcing the best deals. We know buying anything in the current economy is not just for your whims, and that's why this list, as well as our other advice, is tailored to your needs, wants, and your budget and why our picks are expert-tested and expert-vetted. Show more What is a MagSafe battery pack? The MagSafe Battery Pack allows for on-the-go, wireless charging that is easy and reliable since it attaches to the back of your iPhone. Show more Why should you get a MagSafe battery pack? A removable battery pack makes it easy to charge when you need it and ditch the battery when you don't. If you find yourself constantly looking for an outlet while carrying a wall adapter and cable, then a battery pack would be a good fit. Show more MagSafe battery pack FAQs Is MagSafe charging better for your battery? MagSafe charging is great for when you need your phone to charge while you are out and about, making it a better option for some. Just be careful to pay attention to your phone's temperature, as the MagSafe pack can make your phone warm, which is not good for your device. Show more Why did Apple discontinue its MagSafe battery pack? Apple's own MagSafe battery pack was discontinued following the release of the latest iPhone 15 lineup in 2023. Though Apple frequently updates its products, the discontinuation doesn't come as a surprise considering the iPhone 15 models all feature USB-C connectivity while the original MagSafe battery pack was equipped with Apple's lightning capabilities. Show more Why bother with MagSafe? MagSafe capabilities can enhance your user experience and your iPhone's functionality. Besides creating simpler, more efficient wireless charging, MagSafe technology opens the door for various accessories such as wallets, car vent clips and mounts, fitness mounts, power banks, grips and key ring accessories, and more to widen the iPhone experience and make your life as efficient as possible. Show more Should I get a power bank or a MagSafe battery pack? The answer to this question ultimately depends on your needs. Let's walk through it. A power bank can technically have MagSafe capabilities, and some MagSafe battery packs offer dual charging, but not all offerings are the same.Traditionally, a power bank refers to products without MagSafe capabilities, ones that rely on a lightning or USB-C cord to charge your iPhone and that cannot be affixed to your phone with a magnetic grip. These are great options for road trips, emergency charging situations such as power outages, or to store as a "just-in-case" item in your car, work bag, or home.On the other hand, MagSafe battery packs offer charging via magnetic grip. Most of these battery packs can be attached to your phone, making them perfect for air travel, commuting, and everyday activities. They also do not require a cord for charging, though some MagSafe battery packs can be used, like a battery pack with a cord. What's a better buy for you will depend on where and when you want to juice up your iPhone, so I recommend taking a look at our "Factors to consider" FAQ and really thinking about how your backup battery needs to function in your day-to-day life to be worth your money. Show more Will a MagSafe battery pack fit the iPhone 15? If you've recently bought a MagSafe battery pack for your iPhone, you shouldn't have any issues with fit or compatibility when you decide to upgrade to the new iPhone 15. However, if you have a first-generation MagSafe accessory, it may not fit perfectly due to design changes since the technology was first introduced. • Apple Warns Users Of iPhone Spyware AttacksWhat You Need To Know
    www.forbes.com
Apple will warn you of a suspected hacking attackNurPhoto via Getty ImagesApple has been sending users warnings of suspected spyware attacks by way of an iPhone hacking notification system for years. The chances are that you didnt know, especially if youve never received one. Heres another surprise: Apple doesnt offer to help but directs the victims to a non-profit organization instead. Heres what you need to know.Apples iPhone Spyware Hacking Notification System ExplainedIf you were to get a notification from Apple warning you that spyware hackers were targeting your iPhone, youd rightly be more than a little concerned. But how about if that warning didnt offer direct help from Apple itself but rather directed you toward a non-profit organization for advice instead? That, not would appear, iOS precisely what has been happening according to a new report published in TechCrunch. An example of just such a notification was shared with the publication: Apple detected that you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that is trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple Account. This attack is likely targeting you specifically because of who you are or what you do. Although its never possible to achieve absolute certainty when detecting such attacks, Apple has high confidence in this warning please take it seriously. In a posting explaining the system, Apple said: Since 2021, we have sent Apple threat notifications multiple times a year as we have detected these attacks, and to date we have notified users in over 150 countries in total.MORE FOR YOUWhy You Will Probably Never See An iPhone Spyware WarningConfirming that the vast majority of iPhone users will, thankfully, never see such a notification, Apple explained that the notifications are designed to inform and assist users who may have been individually targeted by mercenary spyware attacks, and, importantly, have been so targeted likely because of who they are or what they do. With these kind of spyware hacking attacks being vastly more complex than your standard cybercriminal activity, and most consumer-facing malware, Apple said, mercenary spyware attackers apply exceptional resources to target a very small number of specific individuals and their devices. The notifications themselves come in two parts: a threat notification after the user signs into their Apple account page and a combination of email and iMessage notifications sent to the addresses and phone numbers associated with that account.I have reached out to Apple for clarification as to why iPhone users are directed to contact a non-profit organization, Access Now, rather than its own security engineers.

  • New Research Reveals Carbon Time Bomb In Our Homes, Appliances
    www.forbes.com
The store of fossil carbon in man-made buildings and products is rising, as our dependence on fossil ... [+] fuels continues to increase.Getty ImagesNew research has revealed that the amount of fossil-derived material used in construction, manufacturing and industry is now outpacing growth in the burning of oil, gas and coal, amounting to what scientists say is a "ticking time bomb" of emissions.Researchers in the Netherlands found that over a 24-year period, 8.4 billion tons of fossil carbon were added to buildings, products, roads and other infrastructure, while 3.7 billion tons of fossil carbon re-entered the environment as landfill, via burning, and as other sources of waste. The paper, published in the journal Cell Reports Sustainability, reveals that between 1995 and 2019, the share of fossil carbon going into products increased from about 5% to more than 7% of total fossil fuel usage. That's in spite of an ongoing global increase in the burning of fossil fuels for energy, with the Global Carbon Budget last month finding that carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels and cement will rise to a record 37 billion metric tons in 2024."The accumulation of fossil carbon in stocks is growing faster than that of fossil carbon-related emissions," says report senior author Klaus Hubacek, an ecological economist at the University of Groningen. "This means that, while we are in some countries on the path of decoupling fossil fuels from economic growth, the global economy is increasingly dependent on hydrocarbons for its material needs."In their paper, Hubacek and colleagues show that products made from fossil fuels, from the plastics used in appliances to bitumen used for road surfaces, are making up increasing proportion of our built environment, which researchers call the "technosphere." Thats a problem because that store of fossil carbon is temporary. In other words, its "a ticking time bomb, due to a potentially huge amount of additional emissions to the atmosphere," Hubacek tells me.MORE FOR YOUThe report is significant because, while a great deal of attention is given to emissions from the burning of fossil fuels, relatively little work has focused on the amount of fossil carbon in the things we make. "It was with amazement that, while doing this research, we realized that never before has been assessed the carbon balance of the technosphere at any level, not national nor global," Hubecek says.Previous research has shown that human-made products exceeded the mass of the living world in around 2020. This new study indicates that humans are continuing to outpace the natural world in the quantity of material we are producing. One explanation for the growing share of fossil carbon entering our buildings and products, suggests report author Franco Ruzzenenti, could be the rapid development of more complex products that require larger quantities of fossil fuel-based materials, such as plastics. The researchers found that synthetic rubber and plastic products, which are made predominantly from oil and gas, now account for 30% of fossil carbon in products and infrastructure. The more complex artifacts become, the higher the ratio between stocks and flows, Ruzzenenti explains.Another important factor is the fossil fuel industry's growth strategy: research earlier this year from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory shows that oil and chemical giants are on course to double or even triple the production of plastics by mid-century. As humanity begins to move away from burning fossil fuels for energy, oil and gas giants are looking to pivot to the production of non-fuel products, rather than conventional fuels, to remain profitable."Combined with the rubber and plastics embedded in various types of machinery, rubber and plastics represent more than two-thirds of fossil carbon in stocks of long-term products, both in households and in industry," says Hubacek. It is therefore "not surprising," he adds, "that the oil industry is leveraging on feedstock-related applications amid [the] energy transition. Indeed, our results suggest that the global economic path is heading toward a higher dependency on fossil fuels for feedstock."To tackle this, the researchers say, will require a multi-pronged approach, based on waste hierarchy of "reduce, reuse, recycle." This would require wealthy countries to "reduce consumption, effective management of landfills to mitigate carbon leakage to the environment, extension of product lifetime, and increase recycling to curb reliance on virgin fossil carbon stocks," the authors say. Most important, the authors stress, is the need for material accounting systems at the national and international levels. "A more effective carbon emissions inventory should account for the two-pronged purpose of fossil fuels," Hubacek tells me. "At present, this is rarely done."Earlier this year, researchers at the University of Oxford proposed a four-step roadmap for reducing the production and use of plastics, noting that individual action alone would not be sufficient to tackle the plastics problem. Early in December, negotiations in South Korea for an international treaty to curb plastic waste pollution failed to reach an agreement, with campaigners saying the process had been "captured" by industry.

  • Superman 2025 Trailer Fuels IMAX Film Format Confusion
    www.forbes.com
The release of the new teaser trailer for the new Superman movie duly to be released this summer has set the internet alight, with much of the discussion centered on the look and feel compared to Zack Snyderss dark and moody take of the man of steel. My focus though is on the Filmed For IMAX tagline at the end, which inevitably has caused some confusion. This means that many people, not unreasonably, will believe that the movie was captured with IMAX film cameras a la, Christopher Nolan and Jordan Peele. In my view this has to be one of the coolest movie teaser posters of recent time.sWarner BrosThis confusion was also encouraged by the comment on Threads back in March of 224 from the movies director that The whole movie is shot in IMAX. However, this warrants some explanation. IMAX has three tag lines which I will explain below.Shot With IMAXThis means a movie that is shot entirely, or in part, using IMAX 70mm film cameras. Chris Nolan refers to this as the gold standard for film, in that due to the large film frame it offers the highest quality image capture of any film format, and has a frame that is 1.43:1 so almost fully square, which means that when shown uncropped, on a 1.43:1 screen, will have the largest, highest resolution film image possible aka many sequences in Oppenheimer, Dunkirk, Interstellar, among others.Filmed For IMAX This refers to any movie that is captured on digital cameras that have been IMAX certified as capturing with enough quality and resolution image to meet its standards, including the potential for full-frame 1.43:1 sequence. Examples include Eternals, The Lion King, Dune and Dune: Part Two.MORE FOR YOUExperience in IMAXThe first refers to films that have been captured on non-IMAX certified digital cameras or regular film stock but have gone through IMAXs proprietary Digital Media Remastering (DMR) process, that upscales and regrades the movie so it looks as good as possible on the large IMAX screens. This is typically done with the full approval and guidance of the original director. Any movie that hasnt gone through this process can still be presented on an IMAX projector, but this will have the message, The following movie has not been enhanced by IMAX and is not The IMAX Experience. For Superman (2005), the movie was shot by cinematographer Henry Braham for James Gunn on the IMAX-certified RED V-Raptor, an 8K IMAX-Certified camera. Hence, James Gunn's comment is somewhat misleading Of course, his job is to direct movies, not to slavishly follow IMAX marketing messages, but it does indicate how IMAX marketing is an issue. If it confuses leading directors, then it will certainly confuse the public.Whether the movie will be shown with some sequences in 1.90:1 or if any will be in 1.43:1 is unconfirmed at this time, however so we'll have to wait and see.Time will tell if "Superdog" in a movie makes sense. At least director James Gunn also worked with ... [+] Cosmo in Guardians of the Galaxy III so he has the experience needed to work with magic-powered dogs.Warner BrosEither way, while Ive experienced Superhero fatigue, the new Superman trailer has got me hyped again. While I think we were given some amazing sequences thanks to Henry Cavills strong portrayal, his supercool suit and Hans Zimmers epic score, ultimately Snyders take on the character never quite worked overall. And while Im not sure I needed a Superdog in my movie life, it is evidently drawing closely on the characters comic book origins. Im also fearful of it being overstuffed with characters as well as Nicholas Hoults Lex Luthor (I knew that kid from About a Boy was a wrong un! (please note this is a joke), it also has Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern (what could possibly go wrong, he asked Ryan Reynolds), but also the characters Mr Terrific, Metamorpho and Hawkgirl. Too much? That said, with Rachel Brosnahan in Lois Lane, who I loved in all five seasons of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel Im willing to give it a go even if its only been filmed with IMAX-certified digital cameras.

  • A whopping 37% of Steam users' playtime in 2024 was spent on titles released eight or more years ago
    www.techspot.com
In a nutshell: After Spotify's Recap gave us a glimpse into our listening habits, Steam's own recap is here to unravel our gaming patterns over the past year. This year's data dump has been renamed from 2023's "Year In Review" back to the good old "Steam Replay" and it tells a rather nostalgic tale. While shiny new releases grabbed headlines in 2024, it was the older titles that truly dominated our playtime. A whopping 37% of total gaming hours on Steam went to titles released eight or more years ago. However, the lion's share went to the "modern classics" from the last 1-7 years which took up an even chunkier 47% share.Interestingly, Cutting-edge 2024 releases accounted for just 15% of playtime. Why, you may ask? The answer is more complicated than the entirety of Steam's player base simply being too old to enjoy the latest and greatest titles. In fact, as pointed out by PC Gamer, this is a pattern we've seen over the past few years; the latest figure is actually lower than the 17% mark set in 2022, though it's up from the 9% seen in 2023.The real answer is the extended lifespans of big names like Counter-Strike, Dota 2, and PUBG skewing the numbers. The trio continues to occupy the top three spots by the number of current players. That's not to say there aren't some legit new hit games, though. For instance, Path of Exile 2 and Marvel Rivals were both released this year and are occupying the fourth and fifth spots on the same list. The co-op shooter Helldivers 2, NovaLogic's revived Delta Force, and the popular free-to-play Banana have all posted impressive numbers, too. Meanwhile, on the single-player side, the Chinese mythology-inspired action/adventure Black Myth: Wukong has sold over 10 million units to date. // Related StoriesStill, when it comes to our cumulative gaming habits, it's clear that the old reliables reign supreme.Another factor is the sheer number of older titles on Steam. With over 200,000 games created over a decade ago on the platform, compared to just 18,000 fresh 2024 releases, we PC gamers have an endless backlog of classic hits to revisit and reminisce over.

  • Intel identifies five major issues that affected Arrow Lake CPU launch performance
    www.techspot.com
A hot potato: As the dust settles on the Arrow Lake launch controversy, users await the promised performance enhancements. However, it remains to be seen if Intel's investigation and forthcoming updates can salvage the reputation of the Core Ultra 200-series. Intel has come forward with a detailed explanation of the issues that plagued the launch of its Core Ultra 200-series desktop processors, codenamed Arrow Lake, which debuted to underwhelming reviews in October. The tech giant has identified five key problems that contributed to the discrepancy between their internal performance expectations and the real-world experiences of reviewers. The Arrow Lake processors launched with promises of significant advancements in multi-threading performance, performance-per-watt, platform I/O, and overclocking capabilities. However, users met the release largely with dismay, particularly because of the inconsistent gaming performance. Users and reviewers also experienced higher-than-expected latency and compatibility issues, making the launch feel rushed. After initially remaining silent on the issue, Intel began an investigation to understand and address the gaming-specific reports. By November 8, it had established early indicators to commit to a public root cause analysis and action plan within 4-6 weeks. At the heart of the issues was a missing Performance & Power Management (PPM) package. This crucial software component, typically distributed through Windows Update or chipset drivers, is responsible for fine-tuning the processor's behavior within the operating system. Its absence led to unusual CPU scheduling behaviors, artificial performance increases when cores were manually disabled, high benchmark variations, reduced single-threaded scores, and unexplained performance differences between Windows 11 versions. Intel estimates that this oversight alone may have cost between 6% to 30% in performance, depending on the workload.Another significant issue involved the Intel Application Performance Optimizer (APO), a feature designed to enhance real-time thread scheduling optimization within games and the operating system. The missing PPM package created an environment where APO could not function as intended, resulting in no observable performance gains in APO-enabled titles. This malfunction is estimated to have impacted performance by 2% to 14%, varying by game title.Functionality was also affected, with some users experiencing system crashes when attempting to launch games utilizing the Easy Anti-Cheat service. This problem stemmed from a compatibility issue between Windows 11 24H2 and older versions of the Easy Anti-Cheat driver. While not directly impacting performance, it certainly hampered the user experience.Intel also acknowledged inconsistencies in BIOS configurations provided to reviewers. Critical performance-enhancing firmware capabilities, such as PCIe Resizable BAR, Intel APO, compute tile ring frequency, and memory controller ratios, were not consistently set to their optimal states. This oversight led to aberrantly high memory latency, fluctuating compute tile ring frequencies, and missed performance uplifts in games that benefit from these technologies. The performance cost of these misconfigurations is estimated at 2% to 14%, depending on the application and specific BIOS settings affected. // Related StoriesIntel has already resolved four of the five identified issues. The company has released updates through Windows 11 build 26100.2161 (KB5044384) to address the PPM package and APO functionality problems. Epic Games is distributing an updated Easy Anti-Cheat driver to resolve the system crash issue. Additionally, current BIOS releases for Intel Z890-based motherboards have harmonized the previously inconsistent settings. The fifth and final issue involves newly identified performance optimizations that require additional firmware updates. These updates, expected to be released in January 2025, will be identifiable by Intel microcode version 0x114 and Intel CSME Firmware Kit 19.0.0.1854v2.2 (or newer). Intel anticipates that these updates will provide another modest performance improvement in the single-digit range across a broad spectrum of games.Intel has promised to provide a comprehensive performance update at CES 2025, including a full performance sweep of games and applications, issue-by-issue A/B analysis, and combinatory analyses.

What just happened? Craig Wright, the Australian computer scientist who has repeatedly made the false claim that he is Bitcoin inventor Satoshi Nakamoto, has been found to be in contempt of court and handed a 12-month jail sentence for continuing to sue developers. Back in 2016, Wright announced that he was the pseudonymous Satoshi and said he could prove it. That claim has been disputed ever since, but Wright continues to argue that he really is the mysterious creator and has launched legal battles against those who say otherwise. The Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) forced a trial earlier this year aiming to stop Wright from suing more people. The high court in London Wright lives in the UK found in favor of COPA. The judge said during the trial that Wright had lied about his role in launching Bitcoin, using clumsy forgeries "on a grand scale" and "technobabble," and that he is not the author of the Bitcoin white paper. Wright was ordered to stop taking legal action against Bitcoin developers. In October, Wright ignored this court order and launched a legal case claiming he was owed $1.2 trillion for the intellectual property rights related to Bitcoin. He also repeated his claim that he is Satoshi. The judge said the case is a "flagrant breach" of the original court order. For the five counts of contempt of court, Wright has been sentenced to 12 months in jail, suspended for two years, and must pay 145,000 ($181,308) in costs within two weeks. His $1.2 trillion claim has also been dismissed. // Related StoriesWright had been ordered to appear in court in person during the hearing, but he refused on the grounds that he could only do so if he was paid 240,000 ($300,000) to cover his costs and lost earnings. He appeared via video call from somewhere in Asia Wright refused to say where stating that he intends to appeal the sentence.COPA counsel Jonathan Hough KC said Wright's legal threats had "terrorized" people, putting "developers and bloggers through [] years of personal hell." He said the latest claims were intended to "cause maximum possible distress."In May, High Court judge Mr Justice Mellor said that Wright presents himself as an extremely clever person, "however, in my judgment, he is not nearly as clever as he thinks he is.""In both his written evidence and in days of oral evidence under cross-examination, I am entirely satisfied that Dr Wright lied to the court extensively and repeatedly," the judge said, via The Guardian. "Most of his lies related to the documents he had forged which purported to support his claim. All his lies and forged documents were in support of his biggest lie: his claim to be Satoshi Nakamoto."In October, an HBO documentary claimed Peter Todd, a Canadian developer who was heavily involved in Bitcoin in its early days, was Satoshi Nakamoto. Todd denied the claim and went into hiding for his own safety.Satoshi is thought to own 1 million bitcoins, worth around $92 billion, which would make him one of the richest people in the world.
