    Salesforce AI Research Introduces AGUVIS: A Unified Pure Vision Framework Transforming Autonomous GUI Interaction Across Platforms
    Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) play a fundamental role in human-computer interaction, providing the medium through which users accomplish tasks across web, desktop, and mobile platforms. Automation in this field is transformative, potentially drastically improving productivity and enabling seamless task execution without requiring manual intervention. Autonomous agents capable of understanding and interacting with GUIs could revolutionize workflows, particularly in repetitive or complex task settings. However, GUIs inherent complexity and variability across platforms pose significant challenges. Each platform uses distinct visual layouts, action spaces, and interaction logic, making creating scalable and robust solutions difficult. Developing systems that can navigate these environments autonomously while generalizing across platforms remains an ongoing challenge for researchers in this domain.There are many technical hurdles in GUI automation right now; one is aligning natural language instructions with the diverse visual representations of GUIs. Traditional methods often rely on textual representations, such as HTML or accessibility trees, to model GUI elements. These approaches are limited because GUIs are inherently visual, and textual abstractions fail to capture the nuances of visual design. In addition, textual representations vary between platforms, leading to fragmented data and inconsistent performance. This mismatch between the visual nature of GUIs and the textual inputs used in automation systems results in reduced scalability, longer inference times, and limited generalization. Also, most current methods are incapable of effective multimodal reasoning and grounding, which are essential for understanding complex visual environments.Existing tools and techniques have attempted to address these challenges with mixed success. Many systems depend on closed-source models to enhance reasoning and planning capabilities. These models often use natural language communication to combine grounding and reasoning processes, but this approach introduces information loss and lacks scalability. Another common limitation is the fragmented nature of training datasets, which fail to provide comprehensive support for grounding and reasoning tasks. For instance, datasets typically emphasize either grounding or reasoning, but not both, leading to models that excel in one area while struggling in others. This division hampers the development of unified solutions for autonomous GUI interaction.The University of Hong Kong researchers and Salesforce Research introduced AGUVIS (7B and 72B), a unified framework designed to overcome these limitations by leveraging pure vision-based observations. AGUVIS eliminates the reliance on textual representations and instead focuses on image-based inputs, aligning the models structure with the visual nature of GUIs. The framework includes a consistent action space across platforms, facilitating cross-platform generalization. AGUVIS integrates explicit planning and multimodal reasoning to navigate complex digital environments. The researchers constructed a large-scale dataset of GUI agent trajectories, which was used to train AGUVIS in a two-stage process. The frameworks modular architecture, which includes a pluggable action system, allows for seamless adaptation to new environments and tasks.The AGUVIS framework employs a two-stage training paradigm to equip the model with grounding and reasoning capabilities:During the first stage, the model focuses on grounding and mapping natural language instructions to visual elements within GUI environments. This stage utilizes a grounding packing strategy, bundling multiple instruction-action pairs into a single GUI screenshot. This method improves training efficiency by maximizing the utility of each image without sacrificing accuracy.The second stage introduces planning and reasoning, training the model to execute multi-step tasks across various platforms and scenarios. This stage incorporates detailed inner monologues, which include observation descriptions, thoughts, and low-level action instructions. By progressively increasing the complexity of training data, the model learns to handle nuanced tasks with precision and adaptability.AGUVIS demonstrated great results in both offline and real-world online evaluations. In GUI grounding, the model achieved an average accuracy of 89.2, surpassing state-of-the-art methods across mobile, desktop, and web platforms. In online scenarios, AGUVIS outperformed competing models with a 51.9% improvement in step success rate during offline planning tasks. Also, the model achieved a 93% reduction in inference costs compared to GPT-4o. By focusing on visual observations and integrating a unified action space, AGUVIS sets a new benchmark for GUI automation, making it the first fully autonomous pure vision-based agent capable of completing real-world tasks without reliance on closed-source models.Key takeaways from the research on AGUVIS in the field of GUI automation:AGUVIS uses image-based inputs, reducing token costs significantly and aligning the model with the inherently visual nature of GUIs. This approach results in a token cost of only 1,200 for 720p image observations, compared to 6,000 for accessibility trees and 4,000 for HTML-based observations.The model combines grounding and planning stages, enabling it to perform single- and multi-step tasks effectively. The grounding training alone equips the model to process multiple instructions within a single image, while the reasoning stage enhances its ability to execute complex workflows.The AGUVIS Collection unifies and augments existing datasets with synthetic data to support multimodal reasoning and grounding. This results in a diverse and scalable dataset, enabling the training of robust and adaptable models.Using pyautogui commands and a pluggable action system allows the model to generalize across platforms while accommodating platform-specific actions, such as swiping on mobile devices.AGUVIS achieved remarkable results in GUI grounding benchmarks, with accuracy rates of 88.3% on web platforms, 85.7% on mobile, and 81.8% on desktops. Also, it demonstrated superior efficiency, reducing USD inference costs by 93% compared to existing models.In conclusion, the AGUVIS framework addresses critical challenges in grounding, reasoning, and generalization in GUI automation. Its purely vision-based approach eliminates the inefficiencies associated with textual representations, while its unified action space enables seamless interaction across diverse platforms.     Sonic 3 Understands the Importance of Voice Acting, and It Shows
    We all know what happens when voice acting goes wrong. Theres a reason your brain still reads "It's-a-me, Mario!" in Charles Martinets legendary voice, not whatever Chris Pratts doing (or isnt doing) in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog family flicks are playing the same adaptation game, but avoid making the same mistakes when it comes to gimmick casting that doesnt benefit the role.When you make an animated movies casting process about the human personalities behind the characters, you lose the magic necessary to transport audiences somewhere new. Dont get me wrong: Ben Schwartz, Idris Elba, and Keanu Reeves are all Hollywood stars but theres a key difference. Schwartz steps into Sonics fur and lets the hedgehog take over, making audiences aware of his artistry without putting a distracting spotlight on the artist himself. Same goes for Reeve and Elba, who disappear behind Shadow and Knuckles.That's the problem with celebrity stunt casting in animated movies and why it should be avoided you sacrifice quality for a (hopeful) box office cheat code.PlayEveryone's favorite Parks and Recreation brat isn't just Ben Schwartz-ing through Sonic's dialogue. The actor strives to honor Sonic's voice in past SEGA video games while putting his spin on a more juvenile character interpretation. There's an art to Schwartz's voice acting and acknowledgment of Sonic's prior iterations. Like Mario, Sonic's voice appears in television shows and video games when speech became more than 8-bit garble or speech synthesis. Why would you want to erase all that history and relation?The difference in quality between The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise depicts the stark contrast between memorable and forgettable revamps. Universal and Illumination's mushroom-eating adaptation opts for the aforementioned celebrity stunt castinga cold and transactional method focused on maximizing profits at all costs. Sonic the Hedgehog invests in transformative voice acting, where the draw isn't who's behind pixelated recordings but the characters on screen. It's an animated film's job to immerse audiences in fantastical worlds, which the hybrid live-action Sonic movies accomplish whether in the fictional town of Green Hills, modern-day Tokyo, or a digitized mushroom planet. Thats because no matter the backdrop, Schwartz and company want you to believe Sonic, Tails, and the whole gang are real. They dont want the credit themselves.Sonic the Hedgehog 3 GalleryThe Super Mario Bros. Movie boasts a stacked cast, but what do they bring to their character personalities? Jack Black grumbles and croons as a serviceable Bowser (Black himself is a cartoon character, so that checks out), but even impressionist Keegan-Michael Key's Toad is oddly flat. Luigi sounds like Charlie Day but vaguely New Yorker, Donkey Kong is straight-up Seth Rogen, Princess Peach is an unaltered Anya Taylor-Joy there's no passion behind vocal development. It's the equivalent of dialogue cosplay if purchased on Temu, like slapping a novelty mustache on Chris Pratt while he holds a plunger.Meanwhile, Ben Schwartz has a motormouth zip about his words that matches Sonic's hyperspeed lifestyle. Schwartz can be hilarious as Sonic does his best Quicksilver from X-Men impression during slow-motion action scenes, but also heartfelt and emotional when Sonic faces insurmountable odds or learns everlasting lessons. There's depth to Schwartz's vocal performance that speaks to the values of professional voice acting, which is infinitely harder than it looks. Youre reading lines off scripts in silent isolation, unable to interact with co-stars wholl share scenes with your pixelated and dubbed role yet Schwartz makes it look easy. Sonic never feels out of place next to James Marsten or Jim Carrey, as Schwartzs range, through sound only, hits more dimensions than live-action actors benefitting from all their theatrical tools.PlayWhat's distracting and frustrating about The Super Mario Bros. Movie is how all the film's voices have countless reference points, none of which the studio cares to duplicate or reward. When novels or comic books are adapted to film, there's a freedom to cast without direct audible comparisons. But a video game series with hours upon hours of line readings from voice actors who are still readily available for role reprisals? It's not only disrespectful to the artists who've mastered their crafts and helped galvanize a studio's brand, but distracting from a fanbase standpoint. Slaslfilms BJ Colangelo makes a compelling case to "stop screwing with legacy characters," and she's right. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 takes its reverence for its source material a step farther,, introducing beloved animal buddies Miles "Tails" Prower and Knuckles the Echidna. Now, Tails has one of the more unique voices in the Sonic universe so Paramount went right to the source by hiring Tails' voice actress since 2010, Colleen O'Shaughnessey. Knuckles eventually went to Idris Elba, but not as stunt casting. Elba's take on Knuckles understands the fight-first character, echoing his Drax-like barbarian mannerisms with a gruff warrior's tone. There's even a video of Elba wearing personalized Knuckles gloves during recording sessions so he can disappear into the role, which helps us forget there's an Englishman in a box somewhere reading lines.Then there's the casting of Keanu Reeve as Shadow in Sonic The Hedgehog 3. A handful of voice actors have put their spin on Shadow as a baddie and anti-hero, which Reeves manipulates into his John Wickian hedgehog. You can hear Reeves in Shadow's bluntness and gravel, but there's a more profound parallel. Shadow's history is one of coldness and tragedy at the hands of G.U.N., which Reeves handles with empathy. Reeves himself has dealt with unthinkable hardships throughout his life, tying this sympathetic bond between actor and character. Keanu Reeves isnt playing Shadow the Hedgehog, he is Shadow the Hedgehog, and the parallels between actor and character help develop a well-rounded alien who is himself on screen, not the man behind the words (even if he sounds just like him).Each actor's connection to their colorful counterparts is the secret sauce that's elevated Paramount's Sonic franchise above other video game adaptations. The Super Mario Bros. Movie sold itself on the backs of Chris Pratt, Jack Black, and the entire ensemble cast. Sonic the Hedgehog has enlisted equally impressive stars, but these movies aren't about Keanu Reeves or Idris Elba. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow are the stars the characters are who were talking about after after the credits roll.When you watch any Sonic the Hedgehog after or before The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the debate over celebrity stunt casting falls apart. As an Italian, I laughed when Chris Pratt was announced as Mario but kept an open mind only to be proven wrong. As a Sonic fan who saw those nightmare first renderings of Sonic with teeth, I entered even more nervous once again proven wrong. Paramount's voice cast choices have been aces thus far, endearing these movies to Sonic fans instead of pushing them away. Let's give kudos where appropriate the fantastic voice actors selflessly bringing Sonic and his buddies to life on the big screen.

Enjoy!While the Super Mario series can get quite weird with its lore, world design, and general concepts, nothing comes close to the sheer absurdity of the WarioWare franchise. How many games out there let you pick someone's nose, perform dental work, and have a back-scratching competition with Mario? While on paper these activities may sound like the last things you'd want to spend your coveted game time on, they're executed masterfully and delightful to play.For decades, we've been puzzled as to how the folks over at Intelligent Systems and Nintendo come up with the microgames that make up the WarioWare series. Where do these ideas come from? How many are left on the drawing board? Where does one even begin to develop so many different micro projects? To get some answers, we recently had the chance to chat with Goro Abe, who was not only the Chief Director on the latest game WarioWare: Move It!, but has been with the series almost exclusively as a programmer, designer, and director since the very beginning.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube789kWatch on YouTube Nintendo Life: WarioWare microgames are always so wild, wacky, and vastly different from the next. How does the team begin creating and conceptualizing these microgames?Goro Abe: We start by collecting ideas for microgames from employees across the company, all hailing from different roles and responsibilities. We had decided on the types of Forms (to a certain extent) at the beginning [of WarioWare: Move It!], but that was the only restriction we applied. Otherwise, we let people's imaginations run wild. I pick the best ideas, allowing for a variety of themes and play styles. WarioWare: Move It! has 223 types of microgames including the boss games, but at the initial idea stage, we collected over 1,000 ideas.Image: NintendoCan you walk us through the process of a microgame from start to finish? We imagine the playtesting phase alone must be quite interesting!GA: Once we have the rough ideas for the games, the planner and director solidify the specifics. After that, an artist and programmer will be assigned to each microgame, and that pair create the gameplay. In general, we let the artist decide on the aesthetics of their game. Once the game is complete, we monitor people as they play it for the first time. If the rules are confusing, or if their input couldn't be detected from how the game was played, we think about how those issues could be resolved and make adjustments, then repeat the improvement process.In total, a team of around 80 people is involved in microgame production, with a different combination of team members working on each microgame. That's how we end up with such a rich variety of microgames.To you and the team, what are the core principles of a WarioWare microgame?GA: First of all, microgame controls and rules must be intuitive, where any player can instantly grasp how they work. For example, the balance we aim for is for players to be able to beat a game on the second or third try, even if they didn't get it at first. We also strive to make the themes behind each microgame unique and relatable to as wide a range of ages and backgrounds possible.In WarioWare: Smooth Moves on the Wii and now in WarioWare: Move It!, we also placed great importance on making sure the motion controls feel intuitive to the actual movements and that they look fun to the audience.Image: NintendoWith the latest entry in the series being a sort of spiritual successor to Smooth Moves on the Wii, are there any microgames that were left on the drawing board back then, but were now made possible with Switch hardware?GA: For each game in the series, we think of all new ideas for microgames, so there aren't any ideas that came over from Smooth Moves. However, thinking back on it, the Wii Remote (the controller used for Smooth Moves) only had an accelerometer, but the Switch Joy-Con has a gyroscope built in, which lets us detect more subtle movements. You could say that the additional sensor has allowed us to create even more creative microgames, like ones where we detect the player's leg and butt movements in the Squat Form.Also, Smooth Moves was designed to only use a single Wii Remote, whereas in Move It!, we made it so that a pair of Joy-Con controllers can be used, which helped us discover a new way to play: two-player cooperative microgames. Bum noteHow does the team go about developing the video game-themed microgames found in 9-Volt's stages, like the Super Mario 64 DS sliding minigame with Mario and Luigi? Do you reach into the vault and dig up old art assets, or are you rebuilding them from scratch to match the game theyre mimicking?GA: At the idea stage, we make a list of past Nintendo games and products and think about which ones would work as movement-based microgames. We then pick out the ones that sound the most fun and try not to favor a single game or console.Once we had a solid idea of what to make, we reach out to the developers of each original game, who provide us with all sorts of assets and guidance. Different microgames are made in different ways. We sometimes receive models and other data to help us with development. If the original game data no longer exists, we create it from scratch, mimicking the original.For Super Mario 64 DS, we did get the actual course data, but we made some changes so that it would be easier to play using the Scales Form (a pose requiring the player stretch out both arms). Another change we made is that we added items associated with classic Nintendo hardware.Images: NintendoWarioWare fans are having a great time on Switch with not only one but now two great games in the series to play! What decision led the team to work on Move It! so quickly after Get It Together!, which was released in 2021?the additional sensor has allowed us to create even more creative microgames, like ones where we detect the player's leg and butt movements in the Squat FormGA: While we were developing Get It Together!, games where the player moves their body around like Ring Fit Adventure were starting to get attention on Nintendo Switch, and so we had the idea early on that it would be fun to create a WarioWare game where the player moves their body around while holding the Joy-Con controllers. Also, the gameplay behind Get It Together! and Move It! are completely different, so there were good reasons to make them both, even if they're on the same system.Do you and the team have any favourite microgames or fun stories to share surrounding the development of WarioWare: Move It!?GA: One memory that sticks out in my mind is from the experimentation phase at the beginning of development. Two of our more quiet, serious programmers abruptly stood up, raised both hands in the air, and started playing Gold Digger, a microgame where players use the Sky Stretch Form to stick their arms up a giant nose. During the whole development period, staff would suddenly strike weird poses or start making crazy motions while playing all sorts of games, so I think that to outside observers, it must have seemed like a pretty bizarre-looking development area.In one of the competitive games in Galactic Conquest, the players are birds and walk to the finish line in Ba-KAW Form, but originally the player characters were actually turtles. The idea was that the player would get on their hands and knees, put a Joy-Con on their back, and change directions to control the character. However, when we actually tried it out, the Joy-Con would fall off the player's back right away and the player would scrape their knees, so it was a total bust.     Looking Glass has announced its holographic displays now support iOS via Unity integration. The update allows creators to power and run real-time applications and 3D media using only an iPhone or iPad.The latest generation of iPhones and iPads can now power 3D multiview displays, such as the Looking Glass 6" Go and Looking Glass 16". The development supports Unity-built applications that benefit from 3D visualization, enabling seamless integration into applications built for the Apple ecosystem.We are at an exciting crossroads where mobile technology meets 3D display, said Rob Kodadek, COO of Looking Glass. With iOS support, creators and app developers now have a new way to bring media and interactive applications to life and share them in 3D, with a drastic reduction in gear.Several Looking Glass iOS projects are currently in development, including a Looking Glass holographic video player and an external avatar project from the company Gugenka.Looking Glasss holographic video player will allow iPhone 15 or newer users to transform their cinematic videos into holographic media that can be displayed in 3D on the new Looking Glass Go and Looking Glass 16 display.
