WWW.DENOFGEEK.COMJason Momoa as Lobo Casting Tests New Ground for Audiences and Superhero MoviesIts official: Aquaman and Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa has been tapped to play Lobo in the new cinematic DC Universe. After years of speculation, the actor confirmed his casting as the intergalactic bounty hunter via an Instagram post, with a simple caption reading, They called. DCU-head James Gunn validated this with his own post, a picture of Lobo smoking a cigar. The character is now set to make his debut in 2026s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, opposite fellow Westeros-performer Milly Alcock as the eponymous hero with CruellaI, Tonya (2017) director Craig Gillespie at the helm.First appearing in DC Comics in 1983, Lobo gained major notoriety after a revival in the 1990s where the brutish villain was reinvented as a stylized mercenary. Sporting a biker gang aesthetic that contrasted with his alien appearance, Lobo quickly rose to prominence as the lead of his own comic series beginning in 1990. The character has since become a staple of the greater DC Universe. He even made his live-action debut in the short-lived Syfy show Krypton, played there by Emmett J. Scanlan.Theres no denying that Jason Momoa is an inspired casting choice to portray Lobo. The actor has displayed a passion for the character in the past, and despite not being an alien himself, the physical resemblance to Lobo is uncanny (look at that hair!). Momoa additionally has significant experience playing a comic book icon. In fact, Momoa was one of the most popular faces of the so-called DC Extended Universe, which was largely designed by director Zack Snyder. Momoa was introduced like most of the DCEUs Justice League castings in Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeAquaman movie grossing $1.1 billion in 2018. But, then, is his prior involvement with the old DCEU going to prevent audience members from accepting this casting stroke?Actors crossing over into multiple comic book universes is nothing new. Just a handful of weeks ago, Aaron Taylor-Johnson did it as Kraven the Hunter after previously playing Quicksilver in the MCU, as seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). The highest profile example of this is Chris Evans, who transitioned from The Human Torch in Fantastic Four (2005) to Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). Audiences worldwide had no issue embracing Evans as a different superhero, even of the Marvel variety, with his take on Captain America garnering significant acclaim.Meanwhile some of the biggest stars of DC films have crossed the street over to rival Marvel Studios, with two Batman actors, Michael Keaton and Christian Bale, slipping into the shoes of villains in the MCU, as Vulture and Gorr the God Butcher, respectively. Fellow Batman Ben Affleck did the opposite as the actor initially brought Matt Murdock to the big screen in the heavily maligned Daredevil (2003). Afflecks Daredevil co-star Collin Farrell, who portrayed Bullseye in the film, can now be seen waddling around as the Penguin in Matt Reeves The Batman universe. The key distinction with the promulgation of Jason Momoa as Lobo is the proximity to his last appearance as Aquaman in the now-defunct DCEU. Just this time last year, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023) was scrapping together as much at the box office as possible in the waning moments of that cinematic universe. Momoa is also intrinsically tied to the old DCEU, with his first solo outing as Aquaman (2018) being the only film in the franchise to gross over $1 billion. In fact, Arthur Curry made a cameo appearance in the PeacemakerWill general audiences be able to accept Momoa as an entirely different character in the new DCU so soon after Aquaman bookended the DCEU? History suggests that, yes, they should. There will undoubtedly be some confusion about whats canon and whats not in the new universe, something James Gunn has already addressed on numerous occasions, but Momoas new turn as Lobo has the opportunity to win back viewers heavily frustrated by the previous regime at DC, and the wasted potential of the charismatic movie star.Nobody seemed that confused about why Supermans dad was Zeus in the MCU since both characters were played by Russell Crowe. The announcement of Robert Downey Jr. returning to Marvel as Doctor Doom set the pop culture world on fire, and hell be in the same universe he already commanded in the previous decade. Theres a level of acceptance that actors are actors, not the characters, like theater troupes before it, or in the musical Hamilton where performers such as Daveed Diggs and Anthony Ramos switch roles with just an intermission between them.A face full of alien makeup should help, but moviegoers will be ready for Jason Momoa to reinvent himself as Lobo on the big screen, just as the comic book character did in the 1990s.Supergirl: The Woman of Tomorrow arrives with Lobo on June 26, 2026.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views

9TO5MAC.COMApples new Home products will challenge a long-standing Apple rule, heres whyApple is finally getting serious about the smart home, with three new Home products launching in 2025 and several more after that. Excited as I am for this new Home momentum, it also reminds me of a long-standing Apple rule that could be challenged by this lineup of new products.New Home products coming soon from AppleMark Gurman has reported that 2025 kicks off a big new focus from Apple on its Home products. The new year will bring:HomePad, a new smart displayHomePod mini 2plus an Apple TV 4K revisionThen in 2026 and beyond, Apple will reportedly launch its own smart home camera and a video doorbell with smart lock integration. If these various products prove successful, we could see even more Home debuts in the futurehopefully including a revived AirPort router. All of this sounds great to me. Ive long wished Apple would dedicate more resources toward its Home lineup. But these plans also raise an interesting question. What happened to a thousand nos for every yes?Apples long-standing product rule in questionFor as long as I can remember, Apple has had a key design principle: there are a thousand nos for every yes. These exact words were highlighted by the company in a video that kicked off WWDC 2013. Theyve also been used at various points internally and externally to demonstrate a basic principle: focus matters.Apple would rather make a few really great products than a whole bunch of just-good ones.Despite being one of the most successful companies in the world, Apple still has limited resources. The more it says yes to, the more its focus is split.Which makes me curious about the companys decision to say yes to creating its own smart home camera and doorbell products.Home camera and doorbell represent big new direction for AppleApples forthcoming HomePad is a brand new product category, but in my mind at least, it fits in well with the companys existing Home products.HomePad should pair nicely with the HomePod and Apple TV as a device for interacting with Siri and viewing content. The forthcoming smart camera and doorbell, however, feel like a different beast.Historically Apple has shied away from making its own HomeKit accessories. Things like light bulbs, thermostats, smart locks, garage door openers, and more.Yet now, a smart camera and doorbell are on the way to change that.Im thrilled for these products to arrive, as I expect theyll make compelling alternatives to the existing third-party options. Especially if youre deep in the Apple ecosystem. But if Apples going deeper into making smart home accessories, will we see Apple light bulbs in the future? Smart air purifiers? I doubt it. But Im also unsure how the company is deciding which products to tackle itself, and which to leave to third parties.I want as many Home products from Apple as possible. But Im also mindful that the company cant do everything. A camera and doorbell will likely take advantage of a lot of existing Apple tech, so maybe thats why theyre coming. But there are plenty of unanswered questions heading into this new era for Apples Home division. What do you think of Apple expanding its Home product lineup? 9TO5MAC.COMiOS 19 concept imagines Lock Screen stickers, clever Flick feature, more [Video]It sounds impossible, but were just over six months away from the first unveiling of iOS 19. While rumors about what to expect from the update have been sparse, a new concept created by designer Oofus offers some clever ideas about what iOS 19 could offeriOS 19 features conceptYou can watch the full concept unveiling video below. The feature that looks most intriguing to me is the ability to add stickers to your iPhones Lock Screen. Apple has focused a lot on customization in recent years, including Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets and app icon tinting. Allowing people to pin their favorite stickers to their Lock Screen would make sense as part of iOS 19. Another interesting idea suggested in this iOS 19 concept is a feature dubbed Flick, which would make it super easy to send photos and videos to another person. Theres also a revamp to the screenshots interface, new customization options in the Messages app, and more. As always, just because something materializes in a concept doesnt mean it will actually come to a future version of iOS. Still, concepts are a fun way to see what ideas people outside of Apple have for future versions of iOS. Whats on your wishlist for iOS 19? Does anything in this particular concept stand out to you? WWW.CNET.COMCheck Out These 10 Hidden iOS 18.2 iPhone Features Right NowNow that you've turned your sketches into highly detailed drawings, customized your iPhone's home screen, added sizzle to your text messagesand sampled the newApple Intelligencefeatures, what's next to discover in iOS 18.2?There's so much. Plenty of new settings aren't publicized, so they stay under the radar, but that doesn't mean they're not important. We've chosen our favorite hidden iOS 18.2 features you should know about. For more, here are eight iOS 18 settings you want to change right away, how to back up your iPhone the correct way and how to fix these three annoying iOS 18 settings. 11 Essential Accessories Your iPhone Wants for the Holidays See all photos Restart your iPhone from the new control centerYou don't have to press any physical buttons to restart your iPhone if you're running iOS 18. The redesigned control center features all the classic controls you're used to, like brightness, volume, orientation, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, but there are several new controls, including one to restart your iPhone. All you need to do is swipe down from the top-right of your iPhone and press and hold down on the new power button in the top-right of the control center. You can't just tap it; you have to hold it down for a second or so, and then the slider to power off your iPhone will appear. To turn your iPhone back on, you'll still need to press and hold the physical side button. On iOS 17 and earlier, the only way to restart your iPhone is to press and hold either volume button and the side button. Nelson Aguilar/CNETUse a QR code to share your Wi-Fi passwordThere are a few ways you can share a Wi-Fi network and password with people via your iPhone, and there's a new way to do it on iOS 18. Using a QR code fills in a few gaps for ways to quickly share your Wi-Fi information:Share with several people at once. Instead of individually sending out your Wi-Fi password, you can have everyone scan the QR code from your phone.Share with someone not saved as your contact. Nearby share for Wi-Fi doesn't work unless that person is in your contacts.Share with someone who has Android. Nearby share and AirDrop don't work with Android devices. Watch this: 11 Hidden Features in iOS 18 06:44 So if you meet any of those scenarios and you don't want to text the Wi-Fi password to them, you can use the QR code. Go to the new Passwords app, go to the Wi-Fi section, tap on the network you want to share and then hit Show Network QR Code. If the other person scans the QR code with their camera, they'll be connected to the Wi-Fi network. This only works for Wi-Fi passwords, not regular passwords. Nelson Aguilar/CNETAdjust the beam width of your flashlightThe flashlight on the iPhone is getting a big upgrade. You've long been able to change the intensity of the flashlight, but on iOS 18 you can now also adjust the beam width of the light, as long as you have a compatible model. You can go wide, to cover more area with less light, or go narrow, to use more intense light over less area, and everywhere in between. It's a fun feature to play around with for lighting people for photos. To use the new feature, turn on your flashlight (use the lock screen or control center), and a new user interface will appear on the dynamic island. You can change the light intensity by swiping up and down, but to change the beam width, you'll need to swipe left and right. If you tap anywhere in the dynamic island, you can turn the flashlight off and on. A wide flashlight beam (left) and a narrow beam. Nelson Aguilar/CNETNote: This feature only works on iPhone models with the dynamic island, including the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15 series and iPhone 16 series.Share your AirTag with other peopleAn AirTag allows you to easily track your luggage when you're traveling or your keys when they're lost, but sometimes you might want other people to also be able to track your AirTag, especially if you're on a family vacation or weekend getaway with your partner. With iOS 18, you can now share any AirTag you have with up to six people.Don't miss: 5 Clever Hiding Spots for Your Apple AirTagsTo do this, go into the Find My app and find the AirTag you want to share. Go into the AirTag, hit Add Person under Share AirTag and choose a contact, or several. Finally tap Sharein the top-right and that person will then have to accept your invitation. Once they do, they'll be able to track your AirTag from their Apple device. Anyone that is tracking the AirTag won't be notified when it's near them. Nelson Aguilar/CNETTranscribe Voice Memos and make them searchableThe Voice Memos app is incredibly convenient for capturing ideas or song snippets, but they've always been obfuscated. You can give them a descriptive title, but that doesn't help when you want to find that one memo you recorded that contains the word "porcupine." In iOS 18, the app can create transcriptions of your voice memos and search for words that were previously available only as audio waveforms. In the Voice Memos app, tap one of your memos to reveal its controls and then tap theEdit Recordingbutton, which looks like a waveform. Or, tap the three-dots button to the right of a memo and chooseEdit Recording.Next, tap theTranscribebutton to create the transcription (or view the text if it's already been transcribed). TapDone. Take an existing voice memo (left) and create a transcript of the recording (right). Screenshot by Jeff Carlson/CNETNow, when you use the Search field, the app looks through the transcripts in addition to the titles for results. The text is also available throughout iOS. When you perform a search from the home screen, you'll see Voice Memos as a category with the memos that include the search term (you may need to tapShow More Resultsto reveal it). With transcripts made, voice memos are more easily searchable. Screenshot by Jeff Carlson/CNETHide app labels for a cleaner home screenIs your home screen feeling a little too cluttered? If so, this new feature could help. Now with iOS 18, you can get rid of app labels or the names of the apps that you see underneath each app icon on your home screen. If you can recognize an app from just the icon, who needs the label? On your home screen, press and hold down on any blank space, until you enter jiggle mode, and then hit Edit > Customize. A menu will appear at the bottom of the screen; choose the Large option, which will make your app icons slightly larger and remove the app labels. This will also remove the app labels from the folders in the App Library. Nelson Aguilar/CNETChange an app to a widget without leaving the home screenNot every iOS app has a widget for your home screen, but if it does, you don't need to dig through the widget edit page to find it. If you're running iOS 18, and there's an app that you want to turn into a widget, you can do so very quickly right from your home screen. On a supported app, press and hold down on the icon on your home screen to bring up the quick actions menu. If the app has a widget, you'll see an app icon next to a variety of widget icons (up to three). Tap on any of the widget icons to change the app to a widget. If you want to go back from the widget to the app, go to the quick action menu and hit the app icon on the left. This only works for apps that have widgets on iOS. Nelson Aguilar/CNETSecretly identify songs using the Action ButtonNo lie, it's satisfying when someone asks, "What song is this?" to be able to activate Music Recognition on the iPhone and get an answer quickly. To get the answer means very noticeably asking Siri to run Shazam oractivate Music Recognition in the control center. Wouldn't it be fun to let your friends think you've been blessed with an encyclopedic knowledge of pop music? In iOS 18, you can come close using the Action Button. Go toSettings > Action Buttonand swipe through the options untilRecognize Musicis selected. Assign the Recognize Music feature to the Action Button and then identify songs by just holding the button. Screenshot by Jeff Carlson/CNETTo make it work, just press and hold the Action Button for a couple of seconds. Shazam appears on the dynamic island to listen to what's playing and identify the song. If you're sneaky about activating Shazam and peeking at your phone, no one needs to know you got some help from a supercomputer in the cloud.Find images with handwriting and illustrations in the Photos appA lot is changing in the Photos app in iOS 18, from the way things are organized to the ability to usegenerative AI to remove objectsin images. Apple has also tucked a few surprises into the app to help you sort through your library.Scroll down past the main library itself to view categories such asPeople and PetsandMemoriesuntil you reachUtilities. Tap it to view the full list -- but note that a new feature of this interface is the ability to swipe left to view additional panels. Prior to iOS 18, Utilities included options to view hidden, recently deleted and duplicate photos. Now, it includes many more options. TapHandwritingto view images with handwriting in them. Looking for images that are illustrations and not photographs? TapIllustrations(although in our testing this seems to grab a lot of screenshots too). View images that contain handwriting in your Photos library in iOS 18. Screenshot by Jeff Carlson/CNETShare a specific section of a podcastDid the hosts of your favorite podcast say something especially funny or thoughtful that you want to share with someone? In the Podcasts app in iOS 18, you can send an episode to a friend with the playback advanced to that moment -- but the capability isn't easy to find.Tap theNow Playing barin the app at the bottom of the screen to view the playback controls and pause the episode. Use the progress bar to go back to the start of the section you want to share.Next, tap theMore() button and chooseShare Episode. In the sharing options that appear, tapFrom Startbelow the episode title, and then selectFrom [the current time]. TapDone. Start by sharing the episode itself. Screenshot by Jeff Carlson/CNETLastly, choose the method of sharing, such as via Messages or Mail. When the recipient receives the shared episode and opens it in the Podcasts app, they'll see the option toPlay from [the time]. Specify that the shared episode begins at the time you chose. CONTENT.TECHGIG.COMDeveloper fires entire team for AI, now ends up searching for engineers on LinkedInDeveloper fires entire team for AI, now ends up searching for engineers on LinkedInThe Canadian developers claim of firing his team for AI tools becomes a cautionary tale on tech over-reliance.Wes Winder, a Canadian software developer, has turned into a global sensation after he decided to fire his development team and replace it with AI tools. Winder first used social media to brag about the decision, claiming that this decision enabled him to ship 100X faster with code thats 10X cleaner. Earlier such aggressiveness would have earned clout for him, but now it has boomeranged, and he is a meme on Reddit. The tweet read, I fired my entire dev team. Replaced them with O1, Lovable, and Cursor. Now I ship 100X faster with code thats 10X cleaner. Open AI o3 is coming, and 90% of dev jobs wont survive. But, would you believe it, Winder later took to LinkedIn to announce that he needed web developers to join his company. This disparity invited a lot of derision, the Reddit post even having nearly 10K upvotes and comments. Another raged: So he is saying his company is an unneeded greed mongrel milking a simple interaction between his clients and OpenAI! Another said, I just say AI to do it all. But cant someone else just tell AI to do everything? You dont understand. I meet with the clients! Im a people person, dammit!Of course, there were reasonable objections from critics regarding the possibility of AI in software development. While there are AIs such as OpenAIs GPT-4 and others that can solve simple problems and generate code quickly or creatively, they are not very useful for constructing massive, coherent systems or new problems. one comment said, such as, AI is valuable as it makes engineers work more productive. A stock-taking exercise, which could take several hours, can now be done easily; for instance, AI comes up with a possible format of code that can be further developed by engineers. However, there is no indication that AI will ever totally displace the necessity for engineers. It brings into focus a larger problem for the tech industry today, which looks to overcompensate for its reliance on AI with a reckless disregard for the importance of human experience. For all the ways that AI can benefit developers by taking on the mundane and optimizing the useful, AI cant replace a developer. Creativity and problem-solving abilities, decision-making that are a part of strategic thinking, cannot be duplicated by AI or human engineers. There is a dire need to close the gap between what the AI tools can do and what Winder expected of them, as her experience is a perfect example of what can go wrong when AI is not properly understood and approachedIt also makes very adequate points of the use of profound analytical and technological aspects and the need to assign high value to human capital given the continued transformation of working environments marked particularly by higher rates of globalization and technological advancement. Indeed, one Redditor said it well, The human element will always remain necessary no matter the degree of AI.Also read: Microsoft is offering software engineering internship 2025; here is how freshers can applyhttps://techgig.com/generateHttpWebService-v2.php?tgtype=SAVE_NEWS_READ_LOGS&news_id=116659064&news_title=Developer fires entire team for AI, now ends up searching for engineers on LinkedIn&news_sec=Technology&tags=Wes Winder, software engineering, impact of AI on jobs,AI tools for coding,AI in software development,&news_url=https://content.techgig.com/technology/developer-fires-entire-team-for-ai-now-ends-up-searching-for-engineers-on-linkedin/articleshow/116659064.cms&ppuserinfo=Level Up Your InsightsSign up for our newsletterTop StoriesVisual Stories >0 Comments 0 Shares 35 Views

WWW.VOX.COMRefrigerators have gotten really freaking good. Thanks, Jimmy Carter. The underrated way energy efficiency has made life better, and climate progress possible.Consumer tech news tends to focus on the latest gadget like a new smartphone camera, but the boring old refrigerator ought to get its share of credit when we werent looking, the fridge got really good.Since the 1970s, the standard fridge has grown in size, but uses a quarter of the energy of those older models. And youre getting more for less money, since the manufacturer price of the fridge has halved (adjusting for inflation) in those 50 years. Walk into a Home Depot or Lowes for a replacement, and you can trust that whatever you come out with could be bigger than what you had before, work better than expected, and still not raise your energy bill. Its not just the refrigerator thats transformed. Clothes washers and dishwashers have also become more powerful while using less energy and water. LED lights use 75 percent less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent. And when US energy-related carbon emissions peaked in 2007, one overlooked factor for that peak was better efficiency. All this progress is thanks, in part, to former President Jimmy Carter, who entered hospice at age 98 in late February. While in office, he pioneered many of these gains in US efficiency. From 1977 to 1980, Carter proposed and signed a series of laws that raised the floor for efficiency in the home. One of the most pivotal included creating the Department of Energy, and setting up the appliance standards program that exists today. They cover 65 categories that make up 90 percent of home energy usage, including washing, drying, lighting, refrigeration, heating, cooling, and cooking.Overall, Carter was the first president to pass a law on energy efficiency standards that had teeth, says Jay Hakes, a former administrator of the Energy Information Administration and former director of the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library. The size of refrigerators has grown (blue line), but they use less energy (red line), showing the power of energy efficiency. Appliance Standards Awareness ProjectThe impacts were extraordinary, Jeff Genzer, an attorney with Duncan, Weinberg, Genzer & Pembroke who has served as counsel to the National Association of State Energy Officials since 1986. Even though he was in office for only four years, what the advent of appliance standards produced in terms of [lower] energy costs for all consumers in the United States has to be in the hundreds of billions of dollars. The changes Carter made did more than just make products more efficient. They catalyzed a change in our perception of efficiency which is still evolving today. The idea of efficiency gradually no longer meant coping with less, but about doing even more with less. Efficiency became a desired feature of the system, a way of improving peoples lives, while giving them more control of the energy system. We dont get much of a say in which power plant we use, but we do have a say in our appliances.Efficiency in Carters time was seen as a sacrificePresident Jimmy Carter speaking in front of solar panels placed on the West Wings roof, announcing his solar energy policy, in 1979. Getty ImagesHow Americans thought of energy efficiency in the 1970s is, perhaps, best explained by a particular cardigan sweater. In early 1977, the US was still reeling from an oil embargo, in which allied Arab nations blocked oil exports to the US in retaliation for its support for Israel in the 1973 war. The event coincided with gas prices quadrupling that caused a period of stagflation.Carter in response tried to tap into what was left of a post-World War II ethos of political unity and sacrifice for the greater good, explained Hakes. He delivered a series of national speeches framing energy conservation as an unfortunate but necessary sacrifice. Wearing a cardigan in one, he asked Americans to put on their own sweater and lower their thermostats to save energy. He called it energy conservation.Carter, because of that cardigan sweater, made a lot of people think they were going to be freezing in the dark, but thats not the case at all, executive director of the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) Steven Nadel said. The unpleasantry of efficiency became a common theme in his speeches. In April 1977 he acknowledged his coming energy proposals would be unpopular because they will cause you to put up with inconveniences and to make sacrifices. Some of the proposals included new speed limits for cars (which are more efficient at lower speeds) and an oil profits windfall tax.The parlance of the time was to talk about energy conservation, which was the language Carter used most in his speeches. A sign of its bad reputation was how politicians slowly phased out using the term conservation in favor of todays preferred vocabulary efficiency. It turns out that the policies that had the most lasting impact were not unpleasant at all. Mandatory standards raised the floor for efficiency, while the extra-efficient technologies get a voluntary Energy Star recognition.Appliance standards require very little sacrifice, even though they took years to finally take hold. The 1978 National Energy Conservation Policy Act enacted Carters vision by directing the Department of Energy to set new minimum floors for appliances that were economically and technologically feasible. Ronald Reagan reversed the eight major rules from Carter before they could take effect. But, ultimately, Reagan faced an appeals court reversal forcing him to issue his own standards, which led to a congressional amendment in 1987. The court order found Reagans inaction illegal because of the earlier Carter law enacted, explained Nadel. The estimates of how much consumers have saved as a result vary, but are massive by any metric. In 2015, the Department of Energy estimated that it saved households $63 billion in utility bills for that year. Over the decades, though, the benefits have probably accrued to $1 trillion.Carter may be better remembered today for installing solar panels on the White House than his efficiency programs. But his impacts were more pervasive, if hidden from view. One of the things that the energy efficiency advocates bemoan is the fact that you can see a solar panel, a windmill, and a hydropower facility; you really cant see energy efficiency, Genzer said. How efficiency was rebranded to mean higher quality of livingTo be fair, Carter didnt only frame conservation as sacrifice. He also talked of opportunity. In fact, it is the most painless and immediate way of rebuilding our nations strength, he said in a landmark 1979 speech. Every gallon of oil each one of us saves is a new form of production. It gives us more freedom, more confidence, that much more control over our own lives. This rhetoric, unfortunately, was ahead of its time. Eventually, the US had new technology came along that made it easier to give consumers more options and control, but it was a limiting factor of the time.Clean energy technology was too expensive and difficult to produce to be an easy substitute for fossil fuels. Fuel-switching, or being able to swap a coal plant for gas or renewables, wasnt a real possibility. So cutting down costs did have to involve some level of using less. The difference today is that the technology has caught up. Electric alternatives to fuel-burning products are relatively easy and low-cost. That includes induction stoves and electric heat pumps and water heaters. These arent just more efficient than the gas stove and gas-burning furnace and boiler, but a lot of consumers prefer them because of performance (induction stovetops do not get hot, and heat pump more evenly heats the home compared to gas).Fossil fuel appliances have approached their limit to how efficient theyll become. The very best furnaces out there are 95 percent efficient, whether they run on gas, oil, or propane, meaning that about 5 percent of the fuel is wasted energy. Heat pumps, in ideal conditions, blow that away, delivering two or three times the heating energy compared to whats needed to run it. The heat pump mainly takes the heat out of the air and just needs a little bit of energy to operate those compressors and equipment, Nadel explained. And thats why its so much more efficient. The better technology gives Biden the chance to sell his own climate program as an opportunity that will improve quality of life, while Carter framed his programs as one of sacrifice. In a speech last fall talking about the Inflation Reduction Act and its investments in efficiency upgrades, Biden promised youre going to save a lot of money going forward because your utility bills will be lower. And thats good for your wallet, but its also good for the environment because youre using less energy.Efficiency now is all about the opportunism. Its also more critical than ever to meeting climate change goals. As more buildings and cars switch from fossil fuels to electric power, efficiency will be equally important to make sure the grid is actually meeting the strain from rising demand. The next big thing in efficiency is looking holistically at the buildingSince the 1970s weve seen an important shift in energy efficiency. First, it was associated with conservation or the idea of sacrifice, then morphed into the benefits of saving on ones energy bill and better technology. Were shifting into a new era of energy efficiency today, one that is even more ambitious than the iterative progress over refrigerators (which still have room to improve by phasing out planet-warming hydrofluorocarbons). Now, its all about remaking buildings. One main area households still have room to improve in energy conservation is their water heating. These are usually a households biggest utility expense, and new DOE standards would raise the bar for the lowest-performing appliances. All together, ACEEE counts standards for 47 appliances that are due for upgrades, including for water heating. These would save consumers and businesses a collective $41 billion by 2035. ACEEE estimated these updates also reduce carbon emissions at the equivalent of 13 to 25 coal plants by 2050.The Inflation Reduction Act also changes the field, because its the largest federal investment in recent history to improve energy efficiency. The main crux of the law provides incentives and tax breaks to households, businesses, and manufacturers to insulate and weatherize buildings, as well as install technologies like the heat pump. The IRA also starts to address another important, overlooked aspect of efficiency: the building itself. Buildings, not just the products that fill them, can make or break how much energy a household uses. If you have leaks in your home or if you have really inefficient windows, no matter how efficient your appliances are, youre still going to be using and wasting a lot of energy, said Jamal Lewis, director of Policy Partnerships and Equitable Electrification at the advocacy group Rewiring America.Bidens overall tone is about what we have to gain from efficiency, not lose. And the IRA makes a big bet on efficiency as a politically popular, win-win proposition. Look, were talking about real money here, to save, people, said Biden. And its just going to start kicking in now.Biden, like Carter, is using efficiency to help address similar economic challenges and an energy crunch stemming from events beyond US borders. The question is whether the public sees it the same way. The president can raise the bar and set an example. Ultimately, the challenge is not just learning to do more with less, but convincing people that this is a trait worth having in their next furnace, dryer, computer, or stove.Youve read 1 article in the last monthHere at Vox, we're unwavering in our commitment to covering the issues that matter most to you threats to democracy, immigration, reproductive rights, the environment, and the rising polarization across this country. Our mission is to provide clear, accessible journalism that empowers you to stay informed and engaged in shaping our world. If ByteDance follows through, it will become one of the worlds top owners of Nvidia chips, despite U.S. efforts to restrict Chinese companies from buying U.S. AI chips like these. In 2022, the U.S. announced export restrictions on certain kinds of AI chips to countries including China where ByteDance is headquartered. These restrictions have gotten tighter multiple times since.ByteDance is technically adhering to these restrictions by using a loophole: The company isnt bringing the chips directly to China and is instead storing them in data centers located in other regions like Southeast Asia, according to The Informations reporting. This doesnt technically violate U.S. restrictions.ByteDance runs Doubao, Chinas hottest AI chatbot with 51 million active users, according to the South China Morning Post.TechCrunch reached out to ByteDance for more information.Topics0 Comments 0 Shares 34 Views
