• Hyundai and Kia now qualify for the federal EV tax credit
    www.theverge.com
Five electric vehicles from Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis now qualify for the USs $7,500 EV tax credit, Electrek reports. The new models include popular vehicles like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 crossover SUV and Kia EV9 three-row family hauler. Now, 25 EVs and plug-in hybrids across 10 brands qualify for the credit. The Biden Administrations EV tax credit rules mandate building vehicles in North America for eligibility and include additional requirements for sourcing battery components. In 2022, Hyundai and Kia threatened to take legal action against Bidens Inflation Reduction Act after it expanded the available credits but left the EVs they were building in Korea ineligible for them. Now that Hyundai has opened up a $7.6 billion EV manufacturing plant in Georgia to produce the NACS-equipped 2025 Ioniq 5 and the upcoming Ioniq 9 three-row SUV, its vehicles are eligible.Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis models have been added to the Federal Tax Credits list as of January 1st, 2025. Screenshot: The VergeHowever, Hyundai and Kia might lose the benefit if the upcoming Trump administration makes drastic changes. The President-elect vowed during his campaign to eliminate the EV incentives on day one, though American automakers have pleaded to let it live. But unless Congress votes to eliminate the program, Hyundai and Kia buyers could still get the incentive for the 2025 tax year or take advantage of it through a lease. The New York Times recently reported that Trump could try to take other actions without Congress by eliminating the credit for leases or taking down websites with information about the program.

  • This AI Paper Proposes a Novel Ecosystem Integrating Agents, Sims, and Assistants for Scalable and User-Centric AI Applications
    www.marktechpost.com
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now an integral ingredient in automating tasks in various industries, gaining immense efficiency and better decision-making benefits. Autonomy in agents has developed the capability to work independently to achieve specific functionalities, such as controlling smart home appliances or managing data in complex systems. The idea behind these autonomy features is to save time while enhancing user productivity through minimal human intervention. However, the development and implementation of these systems constantly attract innovation due to their limitations. The primary challenge with autonomous agent systems is their inability to generalize across diverse tasks and adapt to changing user needs. Many agents struggle with tasks outside their predefined scope, often lacking flexibility and scalability. Some other problems are privacy, trust, and ethical considerations, which are critical for deployment in sensitive real-world contexts. A multidisciplinary approach is needed to address these issues, balancing technical capabilities with user-centric design principles.Agents developed historically rely upon methodologies like symbolic AI, reactive systems, and multi-agent frameworks. Symbolic AI with predetermined rules did well for some applications but failed with real-world complications. Reactive systems were great in immediate response activities but failed in long-term planning and adaptability. Multi-agent frameworks offered distributed problem-solving capabilities but still had challenges concerning coordination and communication, especially at large implementation scales. These limitations call for a paradigm shift in agent development.Researchers at the University of Washington and Microsoft Research have introduced a new ecological system consisting of three connected entities: agents, Sims, and Assistants. An ecological system in this context signifies a new approach to the traditional role of agents, consisting of two aspects: Sims represent user preferences and behavior, whereas Assistants act as intermediaries between the agent and the user. This integration can enable personalization, adaptability, and trust through improved agent-based systems.Advanced architectures that combine large and small language models are utilized in the proposed methodology. Such a hybrid architecture enhances the scalability of agents, reducing computational requirements by breaking down tasks into more manageable sub-tasks. Coordination mechanisms are advanced, involving decentralized control and negotiation protocols to allow agents to interact without hindrance. Reinforcement learning and transfer learning enhance adaptability, allowing agents to learn from prior experiences and apply knowledge to new tasks. Ethical design principles, such as transparency and fairness, ensure these systems safe and responsible operation. By integrating these elements, the researchers aim to overcome the traditional limitations of agent-based AI.The performance of this ecosystem demonstrated significant improvements in managing complex tasks. For example, agents effectively handled multi-step operations with minimal user intervention, a key challenge in earlier frameworks. A salient outcome was the decrease in the user input required to perform a task by introducing Sims that communicated on behalf of the user. The system was also observed to have greater accuracy in completing tasks and making decisions, as there were observed efficiencies in the time it took to complete tasks compared to a standard approach. Specific numbers are not reported; however, the researchers point out the applicability of their system to real-world domains. The work of the researchers clearly shows that a holistic ecosystem can be used to solve long-standing problems in agent-based AI. Combining agents with Sims and Assistants ensures the system addresses scalability, adaptability, and trustworthiness issues while guaranteeing privacy and ethical compliance. This novel framework opens the door for further adoption of autonomous systems in many contexts, illustrating the potential for AI to increase productivity and user satisfaction. The results indicate that this method may become a new benchmark for designing and deploying autonomous agents, thus leading to increased trust and utility in AI technologies.Check out the Paper. • Black Myth: Wukong Wins IGNs 2024 Peoples Choice Tournament
    www.ign.com
There were some incredible games released this year, and we wanted to know which you thought was the best of the best. So with our partners at Truth, we picked 64 of 2024s best games, put them in a head-to-head tournament, and gave you the power to vote for your favorites. After six rounds of voting and more than 1 million votes in all, one game reigned supreme as champion: Black Myth: Wukong. An action game from developer Game Science, Black Myth: Wukong is inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. You play as the Destined One, an anthropomorphic monkey based on Sun Wukong from the novel. You wield a staff with different stances, have access to several magic spells, and can transform into enemies after defeating them.In IGNs review, we cited its fantastic combat, beautiful environments, and well-designed bosses as the areas where it shines. While it may not be a soulslike, its combat can be quite challenging and forces you to weave together quick reflexes, smart resource management, and versatile attacks to take down its many bosses.Black Myth: Wukongs popularity was obvious from the very start of our fan-voted tournament. It had a dominant run, culminating in a win over Marvel Rivals in the final with 59% of the vote. Before that, it had to get through Harry Potter: Quidditch Championship, Star Wars Outlaws, Mario & Luigi: Brothership, Stellar Blade, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, beating all of them with at least 67% of the vote.Marvel Rivals run to the final was more contested, with it barely beating out the Silent Hill 2 remake in the semifinals and Astro Bot in the quarterfinals, which was one of the closest matchups of the whole tournament. There were more than 50,000 votes cast in that matchup, and Marvel Rivals won by only 960. Before those close calls, it had to get through some stiff competition in World of Warcraft: The War Within, Batman: Arkham Shadow, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.IGNs pick for Best Game of 2024 went to Metaphor: ReFantazio, but it didnt make it out of the first round of the Peoples Choice Tournament. Mario & Luigi: Brothership took it down before falling to Black Myth: Wukong in its path to the title. Indie darling Balatro, one of IGNs runners-up for Best Game of 2024 and winner of our Best PC Game of 2024 Award, also had a surprisingly short run. After narrowly defeating Still Wakes the Deep in the first round, it got only 26% of the vote in Round 2 against Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.Space Marine 2 had a very impressive run overall, taking down multiple big names on its way to the Final Four. In addition to its resounding win over Balatro, it also defeated Sons of the Forest, Dragons Dogma 2, and Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, another of IGNs runners-up for Best Game of 2024. The other member of the Final Four was Silent Hill 2, which won the IGN Award for Best Horror Game of 2024. It got to the semifinals by going through Life Is Strange: Double Exposure, Helldivers 2, Luigis Mansion 2 HD, and Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero.Thank you to the many people who logged votes in this years Peoples Choice Tournament. Let us know in the comments below what you think of the outcome. If you disagree with the winner, which game would you have chosen? And heres to another great year of gaming in 2025!

  • We Build LEGO Star Wars Grogu, A Tribute to The Mandalorian's Breakout Star
    www.ign.com
At its best, the Star Wars franchise is a genre mashup. At one extreme is the spaghetti western, outlaw genre embodied by Han Solo, about conflicted antiheroes who pursue power through dark means. At the other extreme, there's the fantasy genre embodied by Luke Skywalker, about heroes who rise from humble origins through magic and love. LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian Grogu with Hover Pram$99.99 at AmazonThe MandalorianThe newest addition to the LEGO Star Wars line is a Grogu set, available now at all places where LEGO is sold (Amazon, LEGO Store, etc.). It's geared toward this more casual fan, who may have watched Episodes VII, VIII, and IX and a handful of the TV shows several years ago, but otherwise needs a damn good reason to tune in and watch something brand new. To those fans, The Mandalorian was the last time that Star Wars felt like essential pop culture viewing, and LEGO Grogu is certainly ubiquitous enough to warrant this type of high-piece-count depiction. We Build LEGO Star Wars Grogu with Hover Pram (Set #75403)The set has a decent price point; $99.99 is reasonable for a 1,048-piece model of this detail and scope, especially since Disney/LEGO partnered sets typically retail for 30% more than non-partnered sets with similar piece counts. (LEGO sets can be expensive). That LEGO Grogu is priced similarly to a non-licensed set is surprising, to say the least. The set comes with two separate instruction booklets one for Grogu, depicted in a standing position, and the other for his Hover Pram, which you can mount Grogu inside of. The entire build is quick, straightforward, and incremental; what you see is what you get, but in a good way. There's no advanced layering techniques, where you're doing subtle work that builds to a final cumulative payoff later down the road. But that also means that you're getting constant, positive affirmation at every small step. You're building an arm and hand that looks like an arm and hand, and then you're mounting it onto the torso. You're building two ears, and then you're mounting them onto the head. It's one immediate gratification after another. It's one immediate gratification after another. The ears and the head are both poseable, and the arms are attached to dials on Grogu's back, which you can rotate to raise the arms up and down. There's a small green heart piece that you insert into the chest cavity, an Easter egg similar to those in the Build-A-Bear models that you customize at the mall. The Hover Pram has no moveable parts, but it is mounted on a small, black stand, and the Pram's base is wide enough to create the illusion that it is floating midair. Grogu comes with several accessories. There's a Sorgan frog and two blue cookies in case he gets hungry, and there's also the gear shift knob from the Razor Crest, which Mando gives him to play with.A buyer should also know that this depiction of Grogu is not entirely accurate and proportional to its Disney Plus inspiration. The head is taller, for one. The figure is nearly the same size as the Hover Pram it occupies. The distinction between the green and peach coloring on Grogu's ears is angled rather than smooth something more commonly seen on LEGO's exaggerated Blockheadz figures. This is cuteness and mainstream accessibility taking precedence over exactitude. But interestingly, this set comes with a blue 'Ultimate Collector Series' placard, which typically implies that this set is as proportionally accurate as possible. It's clearly not. And yet, the casual audience members this set is aimed at are unlikely to care. In fact, the end result is so cute, that they might even prefer it.LEGO Grogu with Hover Pram, Set #75403, retails for $99.99, and it is composed of 1048 pieces. It is available now at Amazon and LEGO Store.Kevin Wong is a contributing freelancer for IGN, specializing in LEGO. He's also been published in Complex, Engadget, Gamespot, Kotaku, and more. It works with any iPhone running iOS 17 or later, but some features require an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 16 Pro.Final Cut CameraDont want to spend money on an app to unlock manual controls for filming? Try Final Cut Camera, a free app launched by Apple last year.Final Cut Camera is an app from Apple that lets creators wirelessly connect and remotely direct each video angle with powerful pro controls. Although the app was first presented as a companion tool for controlling the iPhone camera from the iPad, it also works on the iPhone as a standalone app. With the app, users can adjust things like white balance and manual focus while monitoring zebras and measuring audio. It also provides ISO and shutter speed controls, as well as making it easy to switch between resolutions and video formats. The app isavailable for free on the App Storeand requires an iPhone running iOS 17.6 or later (while some features require the latest iPhones).Blackmagic CameraBlackmagic Camera, from the company behind the renowned video editor DaVinci Resolve, is another great alternative for getting pro shooting tools for free. The Blackmagic Camera app for iOS is inspired by the interface of Blackmagics own cameras. It provides many manual controls such as shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and tint. Users can also easily switch between different lenses, frame-per-second options, stabilization levels, and focus adjustments. A recent update has added even more features and Camera Control support for iPhone 16 models.Blackmagic Camera isavailable for free on the App Store. It requires an iPhone XR or later running iOS 17 or later. Keep in mind that some features (such as the Log color profile) are only available for specific iPhone models due to hardware limitations.DoubleTakeDoubleTake is an app created by the same developers behind FiLMiC Pro, but this one focuses on letting users shoot a video using two iPhone cameras at the same time. The app was highlighted by Apple at the iPhone 11 Pro launch event in 2019.You can choose two different lenses to record a video at the same time, which is great for multi-cam projects. Users can combine the front camera with one of the rear cameras, or even use two different rear lenses. Theres also an option to easily create a single video using multiple lenses with a split-screen effect. In addition to the multi-cam features, users can adjust and choose frame rate, resolution, focus, and exposure.DoubleTake costs $3.99 and is available on the App Store without in-app purchases. Its worth noting that the multi-cam feature requires an iPhone 11 or later.Carousel CameraSome people are used to recording videos vertically because of social networks, but they dont look as good to watch on a TV or computer. But what if we could record a single video that fits both orientations?Carousel Camera records videos using a square format to enable a great trick when youre watching them on your phone. This way you can rotate your iPhone vertically or horizontally and youll never see black bars. And if you want to export the video, the app offers options to save it in 16:9, 9:16, and other aspect ratios.Carousel Camera is available for free on the App Store, but some features require a $0.99 in-app purchase.LumaFusionLumaFusion is a well-known video editor for iOS that has become a must-have for professional editors working with iPad. Even Tim Cook recently acknowledged that Apple Vision Pro is an early adopter product. At $3,500, not everyone is sure about spending all that money on a headset. However, Vision Pro seems to work very well in specific niches, as the director of Wicked has now revealed that he used Apples headset during the films post-production.Apple Vision Pro was used in the post-production of WickedJon M. Chu says he embraced Apple Vision Pro when working on Wicked. According to the director, Vision Pro was extremely useful for reviewing the films post-production on a giant virtual screen while he talked to other people working on the same project.ForWicked, we had a lot of visual effects all around the world, says Chu. I could be at my house, and I could have a screen that was bigger than the one we had in the screening room, and I could be talking to all the people in all the different continents, and I would watch the playback. At one point, the director mentioned being able to use his fingers to zoom in and draw on the screen to highlight potential things for editing. It just adds new dimension to how you see things, he explains. With Apple Vision Pros spatial computing technology, users can open multiple windows simultaneously and place them in the real-world environment.Apple also shared a one-minute video with Jon M. • Apple Watch Series 4 and more products are now considered vintage
    9to5mac.com
A new year has begun, and Apple didnt wait long to update its list of vintage and obsolete products. This time, the company has added the iconic Apple Watch Series 4 to the list of vintage products, as well as one of the last Intel Macs launched by the company.Apple Watch Series 4 is now a vintage productAs of today, all variants of the Apple Watch Series 4 are considered vintage worldwide (via MacRumors). This includes the aluminum and stainless steel versions in 40mm and 44mm sizes. Apple Watch Series 4 was announced in September 2018. It marked the first major redesign of the Apple Watch with larger displays, thinner bezels, and rounder corners. But Series 4 has also become known for more than just a redesign. Official images of the product were leaked by 9to5Mac days before Apples event, along with images of the iPhone XS.For those unfamiliar, Apple considers a product to be vintage when it has been out of distribution for more than five years. When a product hasnt been distributed for more than seven years, its then considered obsolete. Vintage products are still eligible for repairs when parts are available. Obsolete products are not eligible for repair. With the release of watchOS 11 this year, Apple has officially ended software support for the Apple Watch Series 4, which got watchOS 10 as its last major update. On a related note, Apple has also added the 2019 15-inch MacBook Pro to the list of vintage products. This was the last 15-inch MacBook Pro released by Apple it was replaced the same year by the 16-inch MacBook Pro, which was the last with an Intel processor. However, unlike the Series 4, the 2019 MacBook Pro can still run the latest version of macOS.In July 2024, the iPhone X, the first generation of AirPods, and the original HomePod were also added to the list of vintage products. You can check the full list of vintage and obsolete products on Apples website.Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. • Babies Being Found in Dumpsters After Texas Abortion Ban
    futurism.com
Image by Getty ImagesDevelopmentsTwo years on, the consequences of the Texas abortion ban are almost too grim to contemplate: amidst a surge in infant mortality, babies are being found discarded in dumpsters, ditches, curbsides, and garbage trucks, the Washington Post reports. This year, there have been at least 18 cases of abandoned infants in the state, according to Texas Department of Family and Protective Services figures cited by WaPo. That's more than double the number documented ten years ago, the newspaper notes."There apparently has been... a little bit of an epidemic on this," said a sheriff's official for Houston's surrounding county, where the body of an infant was found in a roadside ditch this summer, as quoted by WaPo. The morbid discovery was made by a landscaping crew. The Texas ban, which went into effect in 2021, is considered the most draconian in the nation. It makes no exceptions even in cases of rape or incest, leaving women with no legal means of stopping unwanted pregnancies. And according to independent research from the nonprofit Commonwealth Fund, the percentage of women without access to healthcare is the highest in the country, perWaPo. The already desperate circumstances are even worse for pregnant undocumented immigrants, who may avoid going to a clinic to seek care for fear of being deported."All of these intersectional things could be leading to this," Blake Rocap, a lawyer with the Sissy Farenthold Reproductive Justice Defense Project at the University of Texas at Austin, told WaPo. The issue is exacerbated by the state's "abysmal" access to prenatal care, he added, "particularly for people without private insurance, particularly for people without immigration status."In addition to the harrowing rise of infant abandonment, Texas currently has the eighth highest rate of teenage births, per US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, with over 20 cases per 1,000 teens aged between 15 and 19, compared to 13.6 nationwide. It also has the 13th worst maternal mortality in the country, with around 28 deaths for every 100,000 live births. All the while, the state's Republican leadership has slashed funding for women's health and reproductive care. But the problem isn't only the abortion ban and the poor access to care, according to critics. It's also the lack of education on the issue. State lawmakers have continued to cut funding for an awareness campaign that would inform mothers what to do when they decide they can't keep their baby, the WaPo said, despite enjoying a budget surplus well over $30 billion.Texas has "safe haven" laws that let mothers anonymously relinquish newborn babies at designated locations without risk of prosecution measures that are often used to downplay the cruelty of the abortion ban. But little to no effort is being made to let women know that these alternatives exist, let alone fund them. This is plain even to opponents of abortion."Women don't know what to do," Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, a former congresswoman and director of The Woodlands township, toldWaPo. "We have to educate, to give them more choices, to give them a chance to provide a loving home for their child."More on abortion: Hundreds More Babies Are Dying Since Banning AbortionShare This Article
