Apple to Pay Siri Users $20 Per Device in Settlement Over Accidental Siri Privacy Violations
Jan 03, 2025Ravie LakshmananTechnology / Data PrivacyApple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a proposed class action lawsuit that accused the iPhone maker of invading users' privacy using its voice-activated Siri assistant. The development was first reported by Reuters. The settlement applies to U.S.-based individuals current or former owners or purchasers of a Siri-enabled device who had their confidential voice communications with the assistant "obtained by Apple and/or were shared with third-parties as a result of anunintended Siri activation" between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024.Eligible individuals can submit claims for up to five Siri devices iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, MacBook, iMac, HomePod, iPod touch, or Apple TV on which they claim to have experienced an accidental Siri activation during a conversation intended to be confidential or private. Class members who submit valid claims can receive $20 per device. The lawsuit was brought against Apple following a 2019 report from The Guardian that disclosed that third-party contractors were listening in on private conversations of its users issuing voice commands to Siri as part of its efforts to improve the quality of its product. An amended complaint filed in September 2021 alleged that the private conversations recorded by Apple because of accidental activations were also disclosed to third-party advertisers.Cupertino has disputed the claims, arguing that "there are no facts, much less plausible facts, that tie Plaintiffs' receipt of targeted ads to their speculation that Siri must have been listening to their conversations, and Apple must have used Siri to facilitate targeted ads by third parties."Following the revelations, Apple apologized for not "fully living up to our high ideals" and subsequently introduced an opt-in to help Siri improve by learning from the audio samples of their requests. It also said it will remove any recording that's determined to be an inadvertent trigger of Siri.It has since rolled out new settings across its software portfolio to allow users to disable the collection of analytics information for improving Siri and dictation, as well as delete all history. Apple has denied any wrongdoing in the settlement filing.Google, which has also faced accusations with its voice assistant back in 2019, is battling a similar lawsuit in the U.S, District Court.Found this article interesting? Aaltos Finlandia Hall reopens after three-year renovation
Source: Tuomas Uusheimo, Helsinki PartnersFinlandia HallFinlandia Hall, designed by renowned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and completed in 1971, will reopen on 4 January after a three-year renovation project. The Helsinki venue will open its doors daily to city residents and tourists, aiming to serve as both an event space and cultural destination. The renovation modernises the buildings facilities while seeking to preserve Aaltos original vision.New features include a restaurant, a caf with a terrace overlooking Tlnlahti Bay, and a retail space focused on Finnish design. For the first time, Finlandia Hall will also offer overnight stays in two restored apartments originally designed by Aalto as staff accommodation. The apartments have been carefully refurbished and furnished with Artek pieces and the buildings original furniture to reflect Aaltos design ethos.Finlandia HallSource: Tuomas UusheimoCafSource: Riikka KantinkoskiApartmentSource: Riikka Kantinkoski1/3show captionIn June 2025, a permanent exhibition titled Finlandia Experience is scheduled to open. It seeks to provide visitors with an insight into the architectural and creative achievements of Alvar Aalto, alongside the work of his first and second wives, Aino and Elissa Aalto, who were also key collaborators. The exhibition will explore their influence on modern architecture and Finnish design.Finlandia Halls upgrades also extend to its event infrastructure. The main auditorium retains Aaltos original design while incorporating new technology. The venue aims to attract a broader range of events, from concerts to conferences, with a goal of doubling its pre-renovation annual visitor count of 200,000 by the end of 2025.Aino AaltoSource: ShutterstockThe iconic Aalto Vase / Savoy Vase was created by Alvar Aalto and his first wife AinoAino Aalto, born Aino Marsio, was a pioneering architect and designer. She graduated as an architect from the Helsinki University of Technology in 1920 and began working with Alvar Aalto shortly after. The two married in 1924 and developed a highly collaborative partnership. Aino played a crucial role in shaping the Aalto design ethos, particularly through her work on interiors, furniture, and everyday objects. She was instrumental in the development of Artek, the furniture company co-founded by the Aaltos in 1935, which became renowned for its innovative, functionalist designs. Aino also designed a range of iconic glassware, including the Aino Aalto glass series for Iittala, still in production today. She was deeply involved in many of Alvar Aaltos architectural projects, contributing significantly to both their design and execution.Elissa AaltoSource: Creative CommonsElissa AaltoElissa Aalto, born Elsa Kaisa Mkiniemi, joined Alvar Aaltos practice in the late 1940s as an architect. She became his second wife in 1952, three years after Ainos death. Elissa continued working in the Aalto office, eventually playing a key role in the management and completion of Alvar Aaltos projects, especially after his death in 1976.Elissa was instrumental in the realisation of numerous significant projects, including the Finlandia Hall. She also worked on preserving and promoting Alvar Aaltos architectural legacy, managing the Aalto offices operations and overseeing many of its later commissions. Both women were integral to the development of the Aalto design language and were critical in advancing Finnish modernism on the global stage. While often overshadowed by Alvar Aaltos fame, their contributions are increasingly recognised as vital to the evolution of 20th-century Finish architecture and design.

Honey's business model is "an adpocalypse all day every day" for creators. LegalEagle just filed a class action suit to get them paid. - Tubefilter
Its been just over a week since YouTuber MegaLag uploaded his bombshell Honey expos accusing the coupon-finding browser extension of snatching content creators commissions by replacing their affiliate links with its own at the very last second before checkout. Now, creator lawyer LegalEagle is helping spearhead a class action lawsuit against Honeys owner PayPal, with YouTubers Sam Denby (aka Wendover Productions) and Ali Spagnola as the principal plaintiffs. PayPal acquired Honey for $4 billion in 2020, when the extension was earning around $100 million a year in revenue.LegalEagle (aka Devin Stone) tells Tubefilter that if MegaLags allegations against Honey are accurate, there is basically an adpocalypse going on all day every day and creators had absolutely no idea.Subscribe to get the latest creator newsSubscribeAnd that underground adpocalypse affects all creatorsnot only those who rely on affiliate commissions. Obviously the creators who may have had their affiliate links obliterated during the checkout process are among the most financially impacted. They lost money from sales they generated and traffic registration from their fans buying products they recommended. They did the work and didnt get paid. Maybe some lost sponsorships, if their ad spots didnt appear to convert to sales as well as expected. But even creators who dont do affiliate marketing or sponsorships can still suffer from this alleged business practice, Stone argues. Its possible that every advertiser in the world might think their advertising on social media platforms is less effective, if Honey is indeed coming in at the last second and taking the attribution that wouldve gone to the creator, Stone says. Creators rely on advertising, whether directly or indirectly. In some ways its a miracle that we are allowed to post our videos on YouTube for free, or our pictures on Instagram, or distribute our podcasts, and all of that is free. Thats because these platforms rely on advertising.Even if youre not using affiliate links, its our contention that if youre relying on the platforms hosting your content for free, if youre relying on advertising revenue, all of that is built on the presumption that advertisers know how effective their advertising is, he adds. Thats why attribution is so important. The lawsuit, filed Dec. 29 in the United States District Court for the Northern District of CaliforniaSan Jose, seeks two things:First, monetary damages for potential revenue that should have gone to creators but otherwise was intercepted by Honey. And, second, an injunction that will prevent Honey from engaging in these alleged business practices in the future. Both damages and injunction are equally important, Stone says, and hes working with a team of half a dozen other attorneys across Washington D.C., California, and the Midwest in hopes of obtaining them.He hopes that if a judge rules in plaintiffs favor, other companies could be investigated for allegedly utilizing a similar affiliation-snatching business model. He tells Tubefilter that based on research for the Honey case, he thinks other potential offending companies could include Karma, Capital One Shopping, and Pie, which was created this year by Honey co-founder Ryan Hudson.I was just furious after watching MegaLags video, and Im lucky to be in a position where I can actually do something about it, Stone says.He adds that candidate situations for class action lawsuits are rare, and says that regular consumers who installed the Honey extension to find deals while e-shopping will have a tough time pursuing class action litigation, because Honey has a class action waiver and forced arbitration (a measure that prevents customers with complaints from being able to take those complaints to court) baked into its TOS.But I actually think this is the perfect opportunity for a class action, because there are so many creators and influencers who have been potentially harmed by these actions, Stone says. Two of those creators are the suits plaintiffs. Both edutainment creator Denby and musician/comedian Spagnola have been potentially affected by alleged affiliation link sniping and the underground adpocalypse. (Its worth noting neither creator has worked with Honey in an official capacity; were not sure yet if creators who did have sponsorship agreements with Honey also had class action waivers and/or forced arbitration baked into their contracts, and thus might be ineligible for reparations from this suit.)Sam Denby is one of the most savvy creators on the planet, Stone says. He understands the creator economy better than anyone that I know, and I cant think of a creator who is better positioned to represent the world of creators than he is. As for Spagnola, she is also an incredibly savvy creator, and someone who relies on affiliate income to make ends meet, he says. Its important to have class representatives who are not only literally representatives of the class, but also someone who is unassailably doing things for the right reason, and doing things well, he says. Sam and Ali represent that.Ultimately, Stone believes Honey may have stolen billions of dollars from creators in the five years since it was acquired by PayPal.We look forward to conducting discovery to find out the exact numbers, he says.He encourages creators who think or know that Honey has prevented them from making money via affiliate links or attribution to reach out to honeycase@eagleteam.law.

Cloudflares VPN app among half-dozen pulled from Indian app stores
More than half-a-dozen VPN apps, including Cloudflares widely-used 1.1.1.1, have been pulled from Indias Apple App Store and Google Play Store following intervention from government authorities, TechCrunch has learned. The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs issued removal orders for the apps, according to a document reviewed by TechCrunch and a disclosure made by Google to Lumen,Harvard Universitys database that tracks government takedown requests globally.Among the affected apps are Hide.me and PrivadoVPN. In communication to one of the affected developers, seen by TechCrunch, Apple cited a demand from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center, part of the Ministry of Home Affairs, which deemed the developer content to contravene Indian law.The ministry, as well as Apple, Google and Cloudflare, did not respond to requests for comment. This enforcement action marks the first significant implementation of Indias 2022 regulatory framework governing VPN apps. The rules mandate that VPN providers and cloud service operators maintain comprehensive records of their customers, including names, addresses, IP addresses and transaction histories, for a five-year period. The stringent requirements prompted pushback from major industry players. Leading brands like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, SurfShark and ProtonVPN voiced significant reservations about the rules, with several announcing plans to withdraw their server infrastructure from India.NordVPN, ExpressVPN and SurfShark continue to maintain services for Indian customers, though they have stopped marketing their apps in the country.

Dont Click TwiceNew Chrome, Edge, Safari Hack Attack Warning
Double-clickjack hack attacks strike.GettyHundreds of millions of web users have been warned about a new and dangerous cyber attack that doesnt care what browser you useas long as you click twice. Heres everything you need to know about the double-clickjacking hack attack.Dont Click Twice Warning As New Hack Attack ConfirmedApplication security and client-side offensive exploit researcher Paulos Yibelo, with a long history of discovering vulnerabilities and novel security threats, has revealed what could be the new attack methodology with the biggest reach of them alleveryone using a web browser. In a blog post detailing what is referred to as double clickjacking, Yibelo describes in technical detail how hackers can compromise your credentials when you double-click in Chrome, Edge, Safari or just about any web browser client. This entirely new threat surface is exposed by the fact that hackers can trick the user of almost any website and almost any web browser into clicking something without even realizing they are doing it. Its a new take on the old clickjacking attack which employed various methods to get users clicking on hidden or otherwise obfuscated web page elements. Clickjacking became obsolete when browser developers built protections into their software to prevent just such an attack. Double clickjacking, however, gets around these protections by adding another layer of attack that relies upon mouse double-click timing to get the victim to validate a login or some other account authorization while thinking they are clicking something else, like a CAPTCHA, that is on the screen at the time. The TL;DR, in other words, is that a new window is opened, and the user is asked to double-click on a prompt while, in the blink of an eye, the hacker is switching context to a different window altogether.I have approached Apple, Google and Microsoft for a statement.MORE FOR YOUWhy The Double Clickjack Hack Is So DangerousWhile it might sound like a small change, Yibelo said, double clickjacking opens the door to new UI manipulation attacks that bypass all known clickjacking protections, and seemingly affects almost every website, leading to account takeovers on many major platforms. Yibelo highlighted the following reasons why the hack attack is so dangerous:It can bypass existing clickjacking protections. It can impact more than just websites alone, with crypto wallets and smartphone attacks possible. Its an entirely new attack surface for hackers to exploit. All websites are, by default, vulnerable to this hack attack. It only requires the target to double-click, nothing else. When it comes to attack mitigation, Yibelo said, Ive reported this issue to some sites, the results have been mixed. Most have chosen to address it while some have chosen not to. As for end users, the advice for now has to be dont click twice if you want to be sure not to fall victim to this new hack attack until in-browser mitigations are available.
