Has Hollywood finally cracked video game adaptations? 2025 will be a big test
Hollywood doesnt have a consistent track record when it comes to getting video game adaptations right. But in recent years, theres been a shift in quality, thanks to projects like Fallout, The Last of Us, Arcane, Twisted Metal, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. We can probably thank the creators and stewards of the aforementioned game franchises, many of whom were involved as producers and co-creators, for ensuring these adaptations of their work were handled respectfully. But weve also seen more mixed results, with less-than-stellar adaptations like Borderlands, Secret Level, and Resident Evil making it to our screens.2025 will once again be a test for Hollywood, as the coming year is packed with film and television adaptations that were both excited for and maybe a little worried about. But with the bar set high by many recent TV series and movies, were hopeful that the video game makers involved will demand nothing less than the best.Heres a look at whats coming in 2025.The Last of Us season 2Due sometime in early 2025, HBOs The Last of Us season 2 will begin to adapt the events of Naughty Dogs video game sequel, an epic thats far too eventful to fit into just one season of television. The Last of Us Part 2 (the game) touches on some dark, extremely graphic events, some of them so shocking that theyll likely leave audiences wincing and probably more than a little bummed out. But the quality of and reception to the first season of The Last of Us all but guarantees that this will be some well-made television.Season 2 of The Last of Us will see stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey reprise their roles as Joel and Ellie. New to the cast this season are Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, Jeffrey Wright as Isaac, and Catherine OHara.A Minecraft MovieWarner Bros. and Mojangs decade-long journey to bring Minecraft to the big screen is finally happening and early reception seems, well, pretty mixed. A Minecraft Movie may be 2025s biggest unknown when it comes to successfully adapting a video game. The Jared Hess-directed movie is taking the silliest of approaches, though some of the gags (As a child, I yearned for the mines) show great self-awareness. The films blocky aesthetic feels both authentic and a little bit off, and its hard to know at this stage whether A Minecraft Movie will resonate with the kids who love it or if internet grumps are right that this is a huge miss. Will Jack Black hamming it up as Steve be enough to carry the Minecraft movie to The Super Mario Bros. Movie levels of success? Well find out on April 4, 2025, when A Minecraft Movie arrives in theaters.Devil May CryDevil May Cry show creator Adi Shankar is partly responsible for Netflixs solid Castlevania animated series, and he seems pretty passionate about bringing Dante to the small screen. So we have some faith that Shankar gets DMC enough to make the anime series another success. While his take on the demon slayer Dante appears to be pretty authentic, Shankar has called Devil May Cry more than just an adaptation. He calls it a personal love letter to Capcom, meaning hes bringing in influences from across the publishers game catalog. Hey, it worked for Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, an unexpectedly good spin on Ubisofts properties.Mortal Kombat 2However you feel about director Simon McQuoids take on Mortal Kombat released in 2021, it was undeniably missing two big things that define Mortal Kombat: the actual Mortal Kombat tournament itself and lovable Hollywood asshole Johnny Cage. Mortal Kombat 2 will slot in both of those missing pieces, and we cant wait to see how Karl Urban as Johnny Cage turns out.Nearly the entire cast of Mortal Kombat returns for the sequel, including the dead folks. That means Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Josh Lawson as Kano, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion. Theres a huge list of newcomers too, with Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, Ana Thu Nguyen as Sindel, CJ Bloomfield as Baraka, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi.Mortal Kombat 2 gets over here on Oct. 24, 2025.Return to Silent HillChristophe Gans, director of the original Silent Hill movie, gets another crack at the franchise with 2025s Return to Silent Hill. This time, Gans is adapting the story of Silent Hill 2 which was already remade successfully in 2024 with a stellar video game remake. It will be tough for yet another iteration on the same material to measure up.Return to Silent Hill will be Gans first movie in more than 10 years. The adaptation stars Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) as James Sunderland, Hannah Emily Anderson (The Purge) as Mary, and Evie Templeton as Laura, reprising her role as that character in the Silent Hill 2 remake. And yes, Pyramid Head is back too. But theres still no release date for this oneUntil DawnPlayStation 4 game Until Dawn was like a playable slasher movie, in which player choice and reaction time tested gamers ability to survive being stalked by a bloodthirsty killer. Now, that interactive story is being adapted for the big screen as an R-rated love letter to the horror genre by director David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation, Shazam!).The original Until Dawn featured actual Hollywood talent, including digital versions of actors Hayden Panettiere, Rami Malek, and Peter Stormare. Until Dawn (the movie) will star an entirely new cast of potential slasher victims hoping to survive a night in a remote ski lodge, though Stormare will reprise his role as Dr. Hill. Sandberg says the cast of his Until Dawn movie are not the same characters from the game, so it appears his stab at bringing Supermassive Games horror story will be a little different. But far as we know, this is not a Clue-style movie with multiple endings.Until Dawn arrives in theaters on April 25, 2025.The return of Castlevania: NocturneNetflixs Castlevania animated series have consistently been pretty good, and hopes are high that Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 will continue the tradition. In the next season, vampire hunter Richter Belmont, Alucard, and a band of slayers will face off against vampire messiah Erzsebet Bthory as she seeks the full power of the goddess Sekhmet so she can plunge the world into endless darkness and terror, according to Netflix.Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 begins streaming on Jan. 16, 2025.Five Nights at Freddys 2Scott Cawthons kid-friendly horror game and Blumhouse Productions style of filmmaking appear to be a perfect match, based on the box office haul of 2023s Five Nights at Freddys movie. The first FNAF movie grossed more than $290 million globally, and true to the games, the money-printing machine is firing up again for a quick turnaround sequel.Five Nights at Freddys 2 will bring back the principle cast of humans and deadly animatronics, adding Toy Freddy to the cast of killer robots. This ones the furthest out; Five Nights at Freddys 2 hits movie theaters on Dec. 5, 2025.

F5: Amanda Gunawan Talks Running, Artist Chidy Wayne + More
Born in Indonesia and raised in Singapore, Amanda Gunawan knew that she wanted to be an architect by the time she was 10 years old, and she carefully mapped out her journey from then on. Travel was a key element of her enrichment as she considered various structures while studying at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). One particular building, however, made a lasting impression.Gunawan analyzed the Tama Art University Library in Japan via books and photos, but to view it in person, she had to make a 45-minute trek during a rainstorm. Yet nothing could have prepared her for the experience she had at the site. I had never felt more inspired to become an architect, she says. Seeing the immense effort from every stakeholder reach such a level of perfection and knowing it was achievable filled me with a sense of assurance unlike anything Id ever felt before.Photo: Helena PriceThe Los Angeles-based design and build firm OWIU Design (Only Way Is Up Design) was founded in 2018. The brainchild of Gunawan and Joel Wong, the duo and their staff take on a range of projects, from furniture design to interiors and landscaping. At the studio, there is little difference between work and residential spaces, which fosters camaraderie among the group. Even team-building is relaxed, with activities taking place at the kitchen counter within the office. Its no surprise then that OWIU Goods, the firms housewares line, began as a casual hobby when the team signed up for a membership at a nearby ceramics studio. Our interior design clients began requesting specific ceramic pieces for their homes, so expanding in that direction just made sense for us, Gunawan notes. Before we knew it, everyone became so invested, and what started as small custom projects turned into hundreds, and eventually, thousands of orders. It all happened gradually and felt very organic.Today, Amanda Gunawan joins us for Friday Five!1. Beniya Mukayu in JapanBeniya Mukayu is a stunning ryokan (Japanese-style inn) located in the Ishikawa Prefecture of Japan. What sets this place apart is its deep commitment to art and design. Staying here feels like being in an art museum, with every element thoughtfully curated to create a unique experience of living with/ being surrounded by art. The ryokan features both permanent and rotating installations by renowned Japanese artists like Kenya Hara and Tatsuo Miyajima, blending art with everyday life like enjoying breakfast beside a calming installation, or relaxing in a library where the installation is part of the atmosphere. The interiors are filled with designer furniture and items are scattered throughout the rooms and shared spaces, adding to the aesthetic appeal. It is both a relaxing and inspiring place and I always have such a memorable experience. Not to mention this ryokan has the best kaiseki meal (coursed Japanese style dinner) of any ryokans Ive been to. The photos are both taken by me.Photo: Official Berlin Marathon2. RunningRunning is an integral part of my life and has very much shaped me into who I am today. It is a constant in my life its there, its available for me. I can do it whenever I want, wherever I want, as long as Ive got a pair of shoes. In that way, its almost meditative. When Im running, I feel like Im transported to a different world, a kind of vortex where Im alone with my thoughts and completely in tune with my body. Its taught me so much about life, bringing me face-to-face with some of my hardest but most important, truths. Running brings out parts of myself I might not always notice and helps me understand myself better. Its built my sense of consistency and trust through self-discipline and a commitment to finish strong. But its also taught me to be forgiving, to remember that, like running, life is a journey with ups and downs. The key isnt to keep score, but to enjoy the process. On that note, Im absolutely obsessed with the brand ON. Im proud to say I was an early adopter I first discovered them when they had a tiny booth at a 5K run I joined in Singapore. I got my very first pair of ON shoes there, and Ive been hooked ever since. Ive occasionally cheated on that pair with other brands and always end up coming back. The brand has evolved so much since then, and its easy to see why. They constantly surprise their fans, pushing the boundaries in the running world with cutting-edge technology and some of the coolest products. Their choice of celebrity endorsements is so spot-on, and their creative creative campaigns are always super fresh. Not even exaggerating Ive bought around 20 pairs of ON shoes over the years and convinced a bunch of my friends to jump on board too. And honestly, despite having so many pairs, Im always still sold on the newest release because each one has a super cool design Ive never seen before.3. The Local ProjectThis is the ultimate resource book for anything and everything related to residential projects. Watching Local Project videos has become part of my wind-down routine before bed their content is so beautifully shot and calming. They curate a selection of the most stunning projects out there and capture them in a way thats almost poetic, with a cinematic touch. Their coffee table books are some of my favorites I have them both at home and in my office, and I flip through them whenever I need a quick dose of inspiration. Its also my default gift for people when I need to find one in short notice.4. FlosFlos is my absolute favorite lighting company right now! Ive got seven of their lights just in my home alone. They create functional art through lighting, transforming any space into something that feels like a museum, with each piece resembling an art installation. I love sitting at home, just taking in the view of my Flos pieces. Their lights go through an extensive process from concept to launch, with so much attention poured into perfecting every detail, and it really shows.5. Chidy WayneWhen I first saw Chidys artwork, I knew I wanted a piece for my home. His art is bold, dynamic and deeply evocative while remaining simple exploring themes of human connection. Each piece evokes raw energy with layered textures. It was one thing to see his work on a computer screen and another completely different experience seeing them in person, in all of its grandeur, with all of the little intricacies and details carefully hidden behind the bold strokes.Works by Amanda Gunawan and OWIU Design:Photo: Justin ChungPhoto: Justin ChungPhoto: Finbarr FallonPhoto: Justin ChungPhoto: Finbarr FallonPhoto: Alexandra LopezPhoto: Nastassia Brukin

The Morning After: FCCs attempt to restore net neutrality didn't work
The Sixth Circuit US Court of Appeals ruled yesterday that the FCC does not have the "statutory authority" to implement net neutrality rules.Since the rules were established in 2015, the FCC argued that classifying ISPs as "telecommunication services" gives it broad authority to regulate them. The decision to redefine ISPs as "information services" during the first Trump Administration led to the repeal of net neutrality in 2017.The current FCC voted to restore net neutrality on April 25 last year. The difference between 2015 and now is the Supreme Court's recent, radical reinterpretation of an important legal doctrine. The Chevron doctrine said that if Congress doesn't weigh in on an issue, courts are supposed to defer to the interpretation of government agencies. Now, interpretation falls to the individual judge, and the Sixth Court doesn't agree with the FCC.This is the end of the road for the FCCs attempts to wrench a little bit of the power from internet providers and carriers and level speeds and access regardless of service. Net neutrality rules will remain in California and other states, but anything at the federal level will require either an act of Congress or, for this case, be appealed to (and succeed in front of) the Supreme Court. Reuters reports that the company agreed to pay $95 million to class members, estimated to be tens of millions of Siri-enabled device owners. The lawsuit stemmed from a 2019 report that Apple quality control contractors could regularly hear sensitive info accidentally recorded by the voice assistants Hey Siri feature. The clips were said to include medical information, criminal activities and even sexual encounters. Reuters notes that $95 million in cash amounts to about nine hours of profit for the company.
