WWW.FASTCOMPANY.COMHow mountain waves are making the LA wildfires even worseExtreme winds are fueling horrific fires across Southern California, and one particular weather phenomenon called mountain waves is threatening to spread the flames even more.Santa Ana windsthe strong, dry winds that hit Southern California during this time of yearare especially extreme, reaching as high as 100 mph around Los Angeles. When those winds hit the San Gabriel Mountains, they can cause mountain waves.Mountain waves are these large scale patterns that occur when strong winds hit mountain ranges at a perpendicular angle, says Devin Black, a general forecaster with the National Weather Service in Oxnard, California, a city west of Los Angeles. That angle then forces the winds to rise over the mountain, and then swoop down the other side, like an ocean wave. These winds are similar to when a river flows over a large boulder, the National Weather Service explains; when the current flows over that boulder, it forms waves downstream. This creates especially gusty winds, Black says, that can cause burning pieces to jump far distances, potentially starting new fires and spreading flames.Mountain waves dont always occur during wildfires. This event is atypical and unusually strong, Black says. But when you hear this term, he adds, you should associate that with dangerous conditions, potentially.Workers attempt to remove a tree that fell on a car due to high winds in Glendale, California, on January 8, 2025. [Photo: Robyn Beck/AFP/Getty Images]Strong winds combined with drought conditionsa unique situation for Januaryhave been fueling fires across Southern California. The Palisades wildfire, which began Tuesday morning west of Santa Monica, had grown to nearly 5,000 acres as of Wednesday morning. On Tuesday evening, the Eaton fire also broke out near Pasadena; as of Wednesday morning, that had grown to more than 2,000 acres. Late Tuesday night, the Hurst fire started north of Los Angeles.Anthony Edwards, the newsroom meteorologist at the San Francisco Chronicle, has been covering the wildfires. OnMonday night, when forecasts of the potentially life-threatening wind storm began, he said on X that he was sweating bullets at work today while forecasting. This is the most concerning weather event Ive forecasted in my young career. Edwards also brought up mountain waves, saying theres a clear case of a mountain wave pattern on the Eaton Fire (and Palisades Fire to [a] lesser extent).Embers fly off a burning bus at Aveson School of Leaders elementary school during the Eaton fire in the Altadena area of Los Angeles County, California, on January 8, 2025. [Photo: Josh Edelson/AFP/Getty Images]Winds move up and over the San Gabriel Mountains, he added, and then accelerate on the opposite side in a downslope wind storm. Those gusts can reach 60 to 80 miles per hour, though Black notes that meteorologists have already recorded 100 mph winds above the San Gabriel mountains. These mountain waves have fueled some of the most destructive wildfires weve seen in recent years, climate scientist Daniel Swain said on Blueskynot only in California, but also Colorado, Hawaii, and beyond. Mountain waves also accelerate bushfires across Australia.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 42 مشاهدة

WWW.FASTCOMPANY.COMBiden administration finalizes clean electricity tax credits before Trump returnsNew tax credits are available for companies that generate clean electricity, the Biden administration announced Tuesday, while arguing it would be a mistake for President-elect Donald Trump to try to undo them. The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service released final rules for the clean electricity investment and production tax credits, less than two weeks before Trump is inaugurated. The credits are among roughly two dozen tax provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act, passed in 2022 with only Democrat support. The credits are designed to save families money on their energy bills and accelerate the deployment of clean energy, electric vehicles, energy efficient buildings and low-carbon manufacturing. The U.S. currently gets more than 40% of its power from clean energy sources like solar, wind, hydropower and nuclear. The centerpiece of Trumps energy policy is drill, baby, drill, and he has pledged to dismantle what he calls Democrats green new scam in favor of boosting production of fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas and coal, which cause climate change when they are burned and greenhouse gases are released. Trump has vowed to end subsidies for wind power that were included in the landmark 2022 climate law.Demand for electricity has accelerated over the past few years in part due toartificial intelligence powered by data centers, electric vehicles and newly built manufacturing facilities. Last year, 60 gigawatts of clean electricity and energy storage likegiant batterieswere added to the grid, which Energy Deputy Secretary David Turk said was roughly equivalent to adding 30 Hoover Dams in just 12 months.Turk and Treasury Deputy Secretary Wally Adeyemo praised the benefits of the credits Monday in a call with reporters, saying theyll create jobs, help meet rising demands for electricity, save Americans billions on electricity bills and help new zero-emissions technologies develop over time. Adeyemo said the policies are an energy moonshot, rewarding innovation and innovative technologies developed in the United States to drive energy costs down and create jobs. The climate law is expected to reduce U.S. emissions by about 40% by 2030, if it unfolds as planned in the coming years. Along with provisions in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the climate law could save ratepayers up to $38 billion on electricity bills through 2030, according to a DOE analysis. The U.S. is undergoing a manufacturing resurgence with over 900 new clean energy and transportation manufacturing facilities announced since the passage of the IRA, said James Hewett, senior manager of U.S. policy and advocacy at Breakthrough Energy, an organization that supports the uptake of clean energy. But if clean energy incentives are rolled back, Adeyemo said, the nation will be left behind in the global movement to transition away from traditional fossil fuel energy sources, with American consumers paying the price.Lower electricity bills for American families should be a priority over the extension of tax breaks for the wealthiest taxpayers, Adeyemo said.Turk said the credits are durable in part because many businesses helped shape the policies by commenting on the proposed rules. Projects that will qualify for the new clean electricity credits, known as 45Y and 48E, are new or expanded power facilities that begin generating electricity after Dec. 31, 2024. Tax benefits can be claimed for the first 10 years of electricity production and the business community wants that policy certainty to make investments, Turk added.Business leaders will be pushing back, I think strongly, against anything that takes away that investment pathway going forward, he said. The Associated Press climate and environmental coverage receives financial support from multiple private foundations. WWW.FASTCOMPANY.COMThe Biden administration has dropped protections for old-growth forests. Heres whyThe Biden administration on Tuesday abruptly dropped its nascent plan to protect old-growth forests after getting pushback from Republicans and the timber industry. The move was announced by U.S. Forest Service Chief Randy Moore in a letter to forest supervisors. It brings a sudden end to a yearslong process to craft a nationwide plan that would better protect old trees that are increasingly threatened by climate change. The effort had been supported by some conservationists as one of the most significant forest preservation efforts in decades.President Joe Biden launched the initiative with an executive order on Earth Day in April 2022. The proposal went through extensive public comment periods and internal analyses by government officials and was due to be finalized any day.The plan would have limited logging in old-growth forests, with exceptions to allow logging in some old-growth areas to protect against wildfires. But those exceptions were not enough for the timber industry and Republicans in Congress who bitterly opposed the administrations proposal. They said it wasnt needed since many forested areas already are protected. And they warned it could be devastating to logging companies that rely on access to cheap timber on public lands.GOP lawmakers introduced legislation while the administrations plans were still in the works to block them from going into effect.Moore said in his letter that much was learned from the first-of-its-kind effort to identify old-growth trees on public lands across the nation. He also acknowledged criticism from those who said the administrations approach to old-growth forests was flawed since they can vary greatly between different types of ecosystems. There is strong support for, and an expectation of us, to continue to conserve these forests based on the best available scientific information, Moore wrote. There was also feedback that there are important place-based differences that we will need to understand in order to conserve old-growth forests.Montana Republican U.S. Sen. Steve Daines in a statement called the withdrawal of the old-growth plan a victory for commonsense local management of our forests. Most old-growth stands fell to logging as the nation developed. Yet pockets of ancient trees remain, scattered across the U.S. including in California, the Pacific Northwest and areas of the Rocky Mountains. Larger expanses of old growth survive in Alaska, such as within the Tongass National Forest.Theres wide consensus on the importance of preserving themboth symbolically as marvels of nature, and more practically because their trunks and branches store large amounts of carbon that can be released when forests burn, adding to climate change.Alex Craven, the forests campaign manager for the Sierra Club conservation group, said there was a scientific necessity and public expectation to protect old-growth and mature forests. Those two facts make formal old-growth protections a matter of when, not if, Craven wrote in an email.Wildfires in recent years decimated blocks of old-growth forest in states throughout the U.S. West and killed thousands of giant sequoias.Wildfires, insects and disease have been the main killers of old-growth trees since 2000, accounting for almost 1,400 square miles (3,600 square kilometers) of losses, according to government research. Logging on federal lands cut down about 14 square miles (36 square kilometers) of old-growth forestand timber industry representatives have said that figure shows further restrictions arent needed.Bill Imbergamo with the Federal Forest Resource Coalition, an industry group, called the administrations proposal legally dubious and ecologically flawed. All this exercise showed was that older forests are widespread on the national forest system. Most of these are already off limits to timber harvest, Imbergamo said. Old growth forests are succumbing to fire, insects, and disease, and they need management to make them healthier and more resilient.A White House spokesperson did not immediately respond to telephone messages seeking comment. The administrations plan faced a doubtful future if it had been finalized. During the first term of President-elect Donald Trump, federal officials sought to open up huge areas of West Coast forests to potential logging.Federal wildlife officials under Biden reversed the move in 2021. They found that political appointees under Trump relied on faulty science to justify drastically shrinking areas of protected forest considered crucial habitats for the imperiled northern spotted owl. The owl has been in decline for decades as old-growth forests were cut in Oregon, Washington, and California.Matthew Brown, Associated Press0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 40 مشاهدة

WWW.DEZEEN.COMEC3 adds "inspired rental housing" with trees to Core City development in DetroitArchitecture studio EC3 and developer Prince Concepts have created The Canopy, a series of duplex buildings in Detroit with rooftop murals, native gardens and over 100 new trees. The Canopy involved transforming an abandoned, 17,000-square-foot (1,579-square-metre) lot into a residential complex with five buildings that vary in size and shape. Each building is a duplex with two units. The Canopy features rooftop muralsIt is located in Core City, where several other projects designed by EC3 and developed by local company Prince Concepts have been built. Others include The Caterpillar and True North, both featuring Quonset hut designs. The architects said that early on in the design process, they rejected the standard "double-loaded corridor" approach to multi-family buildings.EC3 designed a series of duplexes with strategically placed balconiesInstead, they opted for a series of duplexes with strategically placed balconies. The buildings are organised around a series of outdoor "living rooms"."The ve duplexes respond to a need for creative and inspired rental housing in Detroit," the team said. The units feature oak flooring and custom birch millworkThe design takes cues from two sources in Detroit: the Lafayette Park townhouses, designed in the 1950s by Mies van der Rohe, and the massive Continental Motors engine factory, designed by Albert Kahn in the early 1900s.The team also took inspiration from the "raw exhibition spaces" in Marfa, Texas, by the artist Donald Judd.Exterior walls are clad in stuccoExterior walls are clad in stucco and offer an abundance of glazing. Buildings are topped with sloped roofs covered in abstract murals in blue and white, painted by local artist Victor Reyes."Reyes' saturated blue murals play with the negative space between the ve roofs, creating a continuous procession to mirror the sky above, taking inspiration from the moon phases and the surrounding landscape," the team said. The team prioritised natural light and a connection to the outdoorsThe development offers a mix of studios and units with one or two bedrooms. Rents range from $1,350 to $2,000 per month (1,069 to 1,584).Designed to enhance the "tactile quality of the living experience", the units feature oak flooring, custom birch millwork and high-end fixtures.Views are offered from multiple vantage pointsThe team prioritised natural light and a connection to the outdoors. WWW.CORE77.COMA Desk for Industrial Designers Who Sketch?Canadian inventor Mitch Krahn suffers from a herniated disc. He finds that leaning far back in his chair helps to alleviate the pain, but finds it difficult to work from that position. He thus conceived of this Ergo Desk, a sitting and standing desk that can also recline, in the manner of a drafting table. It occurs to me that such a desk might appeal to the ID'er who sketches often. Nothing beats the ergonomics of drawing on an inclined surface, which provides full freedom of shoulder motion; I always found that having to rest your elbow on a flat surface really restricts your movements, forcing you to overcompensate with your wrists.I'm curious to see what the actual tilt mechanism is, assuming Krahn's got it worked out; he doesn't show it. And I think he might want to add a second stay-flat portion of the desk on the left side, to accommodate lefties who don't want their mouse/mousepad/coffee cup clattering to the floor. It would also help for those of us who have desktop speakers flanking our monitors. Krahn's plan is to launch the desk on Kickstarter next month.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 40 مشاهدة

WWW.YANKODESIGN.COMThis personal mobility vehicle comes with advanced terrain mapping tech for collision avoidanceWant to travel around the block more conveniently without leaving a significant carbon footprint or traffic chaos? Personal mobility is the answer, and weve seen numerous startups and established manufacturers hop on to the idea to come up with their version. Now, Singapore-based technology company Strutt has caught attention at CES 2025 for their practical electric vehicle dubbed ev1 targeted towards independent living. According to Tony Hong, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Our vision is to reimagine what a mobility device can be. Its not just about moving forward, rather it is about helping the masses with a solution that helps reduce every stress so that you can focus on important things in life.Designer: StruttThe ev1 mobility vehicle is distinct from the crowd because of its array of 3D LiADAR sensors and smart algorithm that creates a dynamic real-time map of the environment to facilitate smooth navigation through tight spaces or crowded streets. This is the same technology used in autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles. It comes with the Strutt Smart Wheel system for superior comfort and control and features a beefy quad motor setup, intelligent drivetrain, and active all-terrain wheels. Thus, the micromobility vehicle has good torque for riding on challenging terrain. Added to the mix is an integrated suspension system and good ground clearance for stability and comfort. ev1 gets a sizable LFP battery configuration which is better than Li-ion batteries since they dont catch fire and are long lasting. The PMV has three modes for traveling in the city Drive, Support and Glide. The Drive mode is for complete manual control, while the Support mode lets you control the drive, speed and direction via a joystick. Semi-autonomous control is provided with speed and brake assist to avoid any abrupt obstructions that you might miss. This is a basic safety feature in the personal mobility vehicle. Then there is the Glide mode that brings an elevated level of assist by enabling continuous adjustment of speed and direction. In this mode, the 3D path is plotted of the complex environment, and is well-suited for individuals who have some kind of disability. Basically, you can free yourself and let the vehicle do the driving for you!https://youtube.com/shorts/S4JZLJyRG_MThe post This personal mobility vehicle comes with advanced terrain mapping tech for collision avoidance first appeared on Yanko Design.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 40 مشاهدة

WWW.YANKODESIGN.COMTurn your old Pixel 6 Pro into a handheld laptop with this DIY caseWe often hear about how smartphones today are almost as powerful as low-power laptops, but thats only talking about their potential. In practice, its not that convenient to use a smartphone as a regular computer, and not just because of the mobile operating system theyre running. The very form factor of the phone, which is basically all screen, isnt conducive for anything but the most limited of interaction gestures, forcing people to peck away at a screen to type anything of significant length.Of course, there are technologies that allow a smartphone to function as a laptop or even a desktop with the right peripherals, such as Samsungs DeX or Motorolas Ready For, but those arent always portable and take away the phones handheld charm. Short of having a BlackBerry-like QWERTY keyboard, your only recourse for such unconventional use cases would be an equally unconventional accessory, like this 3D printed case that transforms one such smartphone into a handheld laptop or, in more dramatic terms, an actually functional pocket cyberdeck.Designer: Jeff Zimmerman (TypingCat)Those familiar with ancient devices like the HP Jornada 720 or the Nokia Communicator will probably know how these were too far ahead of their time. They tickled the imagination with their full-length QWERTY keyboard that made them look like miniature laptops, but they fell completely short of expectations because of the modest hardware and paltry software capabilities of their times. Now we have phones that can even run Windows XP in a virtual machine, taking us a bit closer to that fantasy.Sadly, no manufacturer today will design and sell such a handheld device anymore, so its up to makers and tinkerers to come up with their own solutions. This 3D printed case for the Pixel 6 Pro, for example, not only gives the phone some protection but also adds a hinged section for a Bluetooth keyboard. Call it a handheld laptop or pocket cyberdeck, the design offers the potential to let you type faster, presuming thumb-typing with a physical keyboard is your thing. Alternatively, you can also type on it like a laptop, albeit with a more cramped hand position.Given how its designed specifically for the Pixel 6 Pro, it wont work with other phones without some major modification. That said, the 2021 Google flagship has plenty of muscle to show even today, and running some Linux desktop distribution is certainly within the realm of possibility. Whether you should just because you could is a different question, of course, but this design at least gives owners a new use for this smartphone that may have already been replaced by a newer model. The post Turn your old Pixel 6 Pro into a handheld laptop with this DIY case first appeared on Yanko Design.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 41 مشاهدة
