The 500px Photographer Spotlight invites you to dive into the minds and methods of the incredible photographers who shape our community. Discover the unique journeys, creative insights, and inspiring stories behind the stunning photos we love.Nicole Grenier, a Canadian photographer based in Quebec, masterfully captures moody and dramatic scenes. Her portfolio showcases a diverse range of landscape, lifestyle, and urban street photography, all unified by her distinctive use of shadow play and deep contrasts to reveal the inherent beauty in everyday life. Uncover Nicoles journey as she reveals her process, inspirations, and distinctive perspective on photography.Nicole, what would you say first sparked your interest in photography, and how has that passion developed since first picking up a camera?I have always been interested in photography, it was something I picked up from my father, who had a strong interest in photography too. Though it was the kind of basic photography everyone does to capture memories of the family, special events, or document travel. It was quite ordinary in terms of composition, lighting, or creativity.Surprisingly, it evolved a lot when a local newspaper created a photography contest with a specific theme each week. I then started challenging myself to upgrade the quality of my work and the style of photography I wanted to shoot. Later, when I stopped working and retired, I had a lot more time, and photography became a passion. I took photography lessons to develop my technique and to have better basics in composition. The Covid pandemic was an important occasion to go out and shoot and shoot a lot in empty streets. During the pandemic and through the years since, I realised that the photography I wanted to do was capturing photos coming from the soul my soul. If I dont have an emotion or feel that the story I try to tell through my photos doesnt touch the soul, then its not a photo I want to publish. I feel like that perspective works well, people often tell me they are deeply touched by my photos.Has a mistake ever led to a breakthrough moment during a shoot? Could you share that experience?I would say it was the day I forgot to adjust the speed and the out of focus scene with the shadow of people walking was very suggestive and created a surreal feeling similar to that of a dream.Whats a lesson you learned early on in your journey as a photographer that you still find valuable today? One of the most valuable things Ive ever learned is that I have to connect to my sensibility when I shoot. If I want to go too fast or try to have a good picture in the first minutes of a photo shoot it never works. I also learned that I have to be alone to make better pictures or with someone who has a similar sensibility to photography as mine. Are there books, films, or albums that influence your visual storytelling? Not really. Some photographers influence me a bit, but when I create, I do not necessarily connect to those influences. I draw most of my inspiration from what I see and what is happening around me.Whats a misconception you had about photography and how has it changed?I used to believe that a photo should reproduce exactly what I had seen at that moment. I originally felt that editing was not honest but now I can see it is part of the creativity process. I used to feel like an imposter when I would edit photos, but Ive moved past that. I stay true to a certain reality, my reality, with my vision of people and the world around me.How much do you plan out your shoots, and how much do you just go with the flow?My photography is mostly based on spontaneity. Occasionally, I will find a nice scene and wait for a person passing by to shoot so it gives life to the photo. Are there any camera techniques or settings you wish you had mastered sooner? With photography, I am still learning a lot. Something I would have liked to have known sooner would be the use of white balance, especially with sunrise and sunset. As well as mastering slow shutter speed and low iso for shooting waterfalls.Could you share what you believe is a common misconception about photography that you wish more people truly grasped? Most people dont realize photography is a lot more difficult than it looks. Many dont understand the amount of time and work that goes into really good photography, before, during, and after a shoot.Whats in your camera bag that no one would expect?I think people would be surprised by what I dont have. I keep my bag light, I dont typically carry filters, gadgets, or even a tripod. My essentials are just a cleaning cloth, spare battery, and a spare memory card.Where do you see the future of photography heading?AI is a growing challenge within photography, as it is in many other forms of art, but I think genuine photography will continue to be a form of expression and a part of creative arts. There will still be emerging photographers, photography in museum collections, galleries, books, and exhibits. I am quite optimistic the true artists will find their way.Do you have an upcoming shoot or project you would like to share or promote?Ill be traveling to New Zealand this coming November, and photography will be a significant part of the trip. Im incredibly excited to start shooting and eventually be able to share the photos with everyone.Read more 500px Photographer Spotlight interviews: Sirun TangThe post Nicole Grenier: 500px Photographer Spotlight appeared first on 500px.

  • Resident Evil Requiem At Gamescom 2025 10 Brand New Details We Learned
    gamingbolt.com
Gamescom 2025 has brought some very welcome news about Resident Evil Requiem, the upcoming instalment to its ever-popular horror franchise. With a story and gameplay showcase now made public knowledge, theres a lot more to unpack about the new game than meets the eye. From likely occurrences in the games story to gameplay tweaks that could up the ante for Grace Ashcroft as she encounters more horrors than she bargained for when she joined the FBI, here are some new details that we were able to glean from the gameplay showcase and the nostalgic look it gave us into Grace and Alyssas time as mother and daughter.Lets dive in.1. The New Lighting System Is More Than Just CosmeticGraces terrifying time in the games demo brought something very interesting to, er, light. We already knew that Requiem was going to be quite photorealistic, presenting the series trademark terrors with cinematic flair and a frightening level of authenticity. Its lighting systems were terrific additions, adding to the oppressive atmosphere the developers wanted to convey. But the new demo showcases that they could be important parts of the gameplay loop as well. Grace is shown turning on an overhead white lamp in a specific room as she is relentlessly pursued by the games new Stalker enemy. Surprisingly enough, the monster is seared by the light, immediately retreating from the room and giving Grace a brief respite from the chase. Its quite likely that other enemies in the game could face similar negative effects, making the strategic use of lights in certain environments quite crucial to surviving the ordeal thats in store for us. It would be quite a smart way to utilize current-gen power to amp up the experience on offer, and the RE Engine seems quite up to the task at this point.2. Eerie EnemiesRequiem seems to be striking a balance between the original Resident Evil games and their modern counterparts, blending action and slower sequences with aplomb. Of course, that blend needs the right kind of adversaries to bring it all together, and this upcoming title seems to have that covered. The Stalker is terrifying, no two ways about it. Grotesque, imposing, and seemingly devoid of a shred of mercy, its pursuit of Grace has been the highlight of several analyses of how the game delivers its scares. However, we just cant seem to shake the image of the monster from the story showcase, the dried up blood around its eyes and mouth as haunting as the way in which it killed the poor hotel manager with no qualms and an almost bloodthirsty demeanour about it.If these two enemies are any indication, this is a game that makes us hesitate to take it on, no matter how eager we are to play it.3. Ink Ribbons Dont SaveIt seems that the game is continuing with more traditional methods of saving your progress, with a tongue-in-cheek reference to ink ribbons included in the demo. Grace finds one hidden away, only for the item description to state that its completely useless. For those of you who are unaware, ink ribbons used to be an item available in limited quantities throughout older Resident Evil games, adding a layer of strategy to each playthrough as you needed to be careful about using them.Perhaps theres more to that reference, and the studio is attempting some serious misdirection? Well have to wait to find out.4. Parallel PerspectivesWhile a lot has already been said on the relative merits of a first-person versus a third-person perspective in the game, we would weigh in by saying that both angles are equally terrifying and perfectly viable ways of enjoying the game. Its going to boil down to your preferences and how you choose to enjoy the experience. Our recommendation would be switching between the two, which seems to be quite seamless, just as the game intended it to be. They are both equally terrifying, which is what really matters in a game like Requiem.5. The More Things Change, The More They Stay The SameAlthough Requiem is bringing a lot of groundbreaking additions to the franchise, its still a Resident Evil title at its heart. Youre still going to be making your way through locations, chasing down useful items and supplies like healing herbs while avoiding confrontations with the games terrifying enemies. Its nice that theres a modicum of familiarity to offer us some comfort in a game where safety and security are very valuable commodities.6. A Bond of BloodIts time to turn our attention to the story showcase, and the flashback to Grace and Alyssas time at the hotel is a great place to start. Grace is clearly unhappy with Alyssas absence for an unspecified, extended duration, but their relationship seems quite strong despite that. However, the fact that they are staying at a hotel, coupled with Alyssas response to the mysterious phone call she receives, suggests that the two may have been on the run from someone, or something.Thats further solidified by the fact that Alyssa immediately reaches into her purse for a handgun, exhorting Grace to join her flight. That plan clearly goes awry, with the pair being attacked by the enemy we mentioned before and Alyssas apparent off-screen death. Were still not convinced that shes really dead, a theory that were going to dive into in just a minute.7. Alyssas PistolBefore we dive into Alyssas presumed death, lets talk about the gun she draws from her purse after the phone call. Its quite similar to the pistol that Leon and Ada Wong use in Resident Evil 2, which opens up interesting possibilities. For instance, we know that Alyssas time with the Racoon Press brought her in contact with the Umbrella Corporations shady dealings. We also know that Resident Evil, where she made her first appearance in the franchise, is set between the events of RE2 and RE3, titles that featured Leon, Ada, and Jill Valentine. Could the phone call she received be from one of these characters, whom she may have met during the course of her investigations?Once again, were going to have to wait to find out if bringing in some of its iconic cast from the past or if that pistol is just a clever reference.8. The StalkerWith several recent Resident Evil titles featuring a Stalker enemy in some form, the one in this game could be as horrifying as it is for a reason. Weve already put Alyssa at the very top of characters we would like to see making a return to the franchise, speculating that having her alive would lend weight and emotional heft to Graces harrowing journey and give meaningful development for her character. The Stalkers blond hair and its apparent obsession with Grace might very well mean that Alyssas fate at the end of the story trailer was that she was transformed into the Stalker after the attack at the Wrenwood Hotel. It makes a lot of sense, and could be the catalyst for Grace finding the courage to face down her fears, spurred on by the hope of finding a cure for her mothers condition and perhaps running into Leon on the way. Making the Stalker such an important part of the narrative could be an excellent way for Requiem to raise the stakes and perhaps help Grace become more than the fearful person she seems in the gameplay showcase.9. Graces Potential Character ArcGraces personality could be a huge part of the story and gameplay in Requiem, with all evidence pointing towards a journey from the nerdy little girl she was in the story showcase to the terrified FBI investigator she is in the demo, to an eventual badass who takes the challenges in her way head on to attempt saving Alyssa if she is indeed the Stalker. On the gameplay front, playing in third-person sees her stumble and fall in fear as she flees the Stalkers imposing presence, her fear and apprehension an almost palpable part of the experience. That could change as she finds her footing, seeing her become increasingly confident, if still a little terrified about the threats she faces. It could be the perfect way to tie the narrative and gameplay together, making her the glue that brings the entire experience into a cohesive whole.10. Leons Continued AbsenceLeons prominent absence from any of the new promotional material only makes us more confident that he stands tall among the aces that the game is holding up its sleeve, ready to spring a very welcome surprise on Requiems players at some point during its story. The time frame of the narrative, coupled with Alyssas flashback and perhaps even the pistol we mentioned, is either clever foreshadowing on the studios part or an absolutely brilliant attempt at misdirection. For our part, were favoring the former over the latter.Bonus: A Playable DemoIts likely that the gameplay demo that was available for testing at Gamescom 2025 could be made available to players at some point after PAX and the Tokyo Games Show. While we would hope that its substantially more than twenty minutes and includes a little more of the game, getting to experience the Stalkers pursuit for ourselves is certainly something we want to do!And thats a wrap on everything new weve been able to learn or guess about Resident Evil Requiem. Its going to be a long wait until February 2026, but lets hope that the game continues to bring us new information to sink our teeth (pun intended) into.

    www.architecture.com.au
Rewilding, Rigour and Radical Care: Practice Visits in CopenhagenCopenhagens architecture is generous to the public realm and Copenhagens architects were even more so to us. Day two began at the shared office space of Johansen Skovsted Arkitekter, Djernes & Bell andKim Lenschow, over coffee and Baku pastries. In this collaborative, little ecosystem of a workplace, the three practices share lunch, end-of-year parties and knowledge a testament to the collaborative nature that ran through all of the practices we visited.Johansen Skovsteds extensive experience in architectural reuse, landscape rewilding and rewetting offered a fascinating approach to working within existing ecological systems and utilising architecture to improve components of that as opposed to reworking the entire structure of the landscape. Its an approach that can inform our work in various remote Indigenous communities in Australia, where we should be looking for smaller-scale solutions that support existing social, cultural, and environmental systems, rather than attempting to rebuild them. As Djernes & Bell director Justine Bell reminded us, that is not the role of the architect.Bell remarked that the architects role in this work lies in our professional expertise in land use, existing structures, storytelling and the synergy in communicating potential futures how landscapes can look and how buildings can feel. Their rigour in material testing and resource-mapping encouraged vigorous conversation around climactic materiality, vernacular architecture and construction methods. Bell, a South African architect, noted that both Australia and South Africa often look to Europe for answers, when, in fact, more relevant ideas are emerging from home. As many Australian architects grapple with integrating colonial vernaculars with Indigenous knowledge systems, we can also look to vernacular architecture, not to overly romanticise it, but to understand and reinterpret these ideas through a contemporary lens. These kinds of projects rely on the humility of the architect to engage with experts in agriculture, biology, geology, rewetting and research.Through Copenhagens built environment principle of not building new, weve come to understand through the lens of these architectural practitioners the idea of making what is necessary with what is available. The labour involved in reusing existing buildings, conducting material research and constructing the architecture that has been redefining Copenhagen for the past decade reflects the same care that continues to be invested in a building throughout its life span.Buildings that have included the most labour are taken care of the most, said Bell. Ive seen this ethos at work first-hand in my own work in regional and remote communities in Australia. When communities are involved in the design through consultation, iterative design and revalidating form translation and in the construction by engaging local builders, sub-contractors, suppliers, ongoing contracts, the buildings are valued as more than just structure and form. They become part of the system of the community: spatially, economically and culturally. The post DST Day 2 Marni Reti appeared first on Australian Institute of Architects.

  • Wikipedia picture of the day for August 23
    en.wikipedia.org
Say's phoebe (Sayornis saya) is a bird species in the tyrant flycatcher family, Tyrannidae. A common bird across western North America, it prefers dry, desolate areas. The species was named after Thomas Say, an American naturalist. It has a diet consisting primarily of insects such as grasshoppers, flies, crickets, beetles and bees, and occasionally small fish. Similar to the eastern phoebe, it sallies from a perch to catch insects in mid-air. Like other phoebes, it creates nests under bridges, canyon walls, wells and abandoned mine shafts, the cup-shaped nest created by the female out of grass and other fine materials. Say's phoebes have been found to breed anytime between late March and late August, egg clutches numbering between three and seven. Say's phoebe is known to use "song-like" displays as its main form of communication. The song is characterized as having a very loud pitch to begin and then slowly leveling off into a more steady pitch. This Say's phoebe was photographed in Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan, Canada.Photograph credit: Simon Pierre BarretteRecently featured: Dua LipaSarcophyton glaucumHallelujahArchiveMore featured pictures

  • 3 strategies for effective leadership, from a former astronaut
    ideas.ted.com
Maria Petrishina / iStockWhat does leadership look like? While there are various approaches to leading a team, many of us land on common questions in the search for an effective leadership style: How can I be there for my team? Do I need to command respect, or earn it? And the most crucial question of all: How can I make sure that my team trusts me?Cady Coleman has been confronting these questions throughout her career as a chemist, engineer, Air Force colonel and astronaut. In conversation with TED science curator David Biello, Coleman shared three strategies to establish and maintain trust in a leader. Whatever your career is, these tips can help you to prepare your team to face any challenge you come across in outer space or here on Earth.People often say, Theres no I in team But maybe there should be.1. Be brave enough to get to know your team members as individualsPeople often say, Theres no I in team But maybe there should be, says Coleman. Every member of your team is a whole person, and since so many of the problems we face at work are interdisciplinary, understanding who each individual is beyond the 9-to-5 is valuable. Being vulnerable enough to get to know your team this way is an essential skill for any leader. When you are able to say, I think your world is different from mine, and Id like to understand more about it, youre not just building trust; youre opening a communication channel that teaches you more about your teammates qualities, says Coleman. This type of conversation requires the willingness and bravery to be vulnerable. Once you know what everyone brings to the table, you can foster the growth of qualities that can lead the team to collective success. For example, as Coleman prepared for life on the space station, her advisors warned that the long periods of time away from family might be too much to handle. For her, however, this wasnt a problem she had been commuting and working away from her family for more than a decade. After sharing her experience, her colleagues realized shed not only be adaptable to life on the space station, but also she could help others cope with the change, too.2. Create a culture thats open to everyones ideasWhile leaders have to guide their teams, its equally important to let everyone know that they can advocate for themselves and bring their own ideas to the table.Coleman benefitted from such leadership at NASA when she was training to go to the space station. In the face of budget cuts, NASA announced that theyd be eliminating their smaller space suits, meaning that if someone wasnt qualified to use a larger space suit, they couldnt go to the space station. This presented a choice for Coleman: wait for NASA to acquire suits that fit her or figure out how she could train in the larger suits. By working with NASAs decision makers, Coleman was able to shift her training to use the bigger suits. Had she not felt the freedom to speak up, she says, she would have been waiting 10 years to go to the space station in a small suit. When you make trust-building a central goal, the rest falls into place more easily.3. Make trust your missionSometimes establishing trust in the workplace can be more difficult than you expect, but when you make trust-building a central goal, the rest falls into place more easily. Workplace dynamics are always changing maybe a teammates work/life priorities have shifted, or a big mistake requires you all to work together under new pressures. These challenges make fostering trust tricky, but they are also moments of opportunity. If a new challenge has arisen or trust has been breached, Coleman reminds us to always figure out the why and the what. Make sure to ask: why has this happened, why do they feel this way, and what can be done about it? Be open to different points of view, and dont give up if you dont get through at first. Connection is often in the smaller things you do; talk about food or music, write a note to compliment an idea and ask to hear more. This level of connection and vulnerability may not seem intuitive at first, but as you make trust a core part of your mission, it becomes easy.Trust, Coleman reminds us, is both given and earned. As a woman, she knew gaining the trust of some male colleagues might be extra challenging. Her approach was simple: she performed well and, with patience and persistence, learned her colleagues language and taught them hers. The challenges in gaining trust will always be there, but if you model vulnerability, openness and understanding for your team, youll find the rewards will always be there, too. This post was adapted from a recent LinkedIn Live conversation with Cady Coleman, former NASA Astronaut and author of the forthcoming book, Sharing Space: An Astronauts Guide to Mission, Wonder, and Making Change, due out July 2024.Watch the full LinkedIn conversation here:A message from our partner the United States Air Force: The mission of the United States Air Force is to fly, fight and win airpower anytime, anywhere. Whether full-time, part-time, in or out of uniform, everyone who serves plays a critical role in helping us achieve mission success.
