The US has a new cybersecurity safety label for smart devices
In BriefPosted:4:58 PM PST January 8, 2025Image Credits:Macrovector (opens in a new window) / Shutterstock (opens in a new window)The US has a new cybersecurity safety label for smart devicesThe White House this week announced a new label for internet-connected devices, the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, intended to help consumers make more-informed decisions about the cybersecurity of products they bring into their homes. To earn the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, which is being administered by the Federal Communications Commission, companies have to test their products against established cybersecurity criteria from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology via compliance testing by accredited labs.Eligible products range from baby monitors to smart home security devices. The U.S. Cyber Trust Mark is the result of a nearly two-year public notice and comment period. The FCC unanimously authorizedthe program and adopted the final rules in late 2024.People are growing increasingly wary of smart device cyberattacks. According to one recent survey, 1 in 3 Americans worry about their connected gadgets, like locks and doorbells, being hacked.Topics

The LiberLive C1 stringless instrument isnt a guitar, and thats fine
Im old enough to remember musicians getting angry over Guitar Hero. But they always seemed to be missing the point. Nobody was seriously suggesting that a video game controller would replace an instrument thats been going strong since the 15th century. Guitar Hero was a fun game, and if it persuaded a new generation to pick up the real thing, it was a net positive for the universe.A similar feeling washed over me seeing the LiberLive C1 on the ground at CES 2025. If the guitars future is in peril, it has nothing to do with the existence of the self-proclaimed first-ever stringless smart guitar. And really, referring to the thing as a guitar at all seems to be missing the point.Learning instruments is difficult, time-consuming, and can be incredibly frustrating. Take it from me, a decades-long terrible guitar player. Like Guitar Hero before it, it would be unserious to suggest a product like this poses any manner of existential threat to the guitar (besides, the emergence of non-guitar pop music did most of the heavy lifting there).Theres something gratifying about an instrument you can simply pick up and play. In fact, in a strange way, being a guitar player might have worked against me with the C1. You have to reorient your brain to embrace the instruments simplicity. There are a series of chord names associated with buttons on the side of the instruments neck. Holding one of these while strumming the paddle on the C1s body plays a chord. And thats really all there is to it.Theres no playing individual notes and nothing approximating shredding. You can, however, strum and sing along with songs on the app. Its effectively karaoke with an added dimension. Its fun, its portable, its $699, it lasts six hours on a charge. And it wont be replacing guitars any time soon. Check out more CES 2025 coverage, including

The Visual Effects World Atlas: A Data-Driven Look at the VFX Industry
Released late last year by Joseph Bell, who was unhappy and frustrated by the lack of clear, objective information about the VFX industry, the Visual Effects World Atlas provides a unique, comprehensive research report and overview of artists who work in the global visual effects industry, an industry that supports the creative works of film studios, streamers, and branded content creators.Bell provides a unique voice in visual effects, combining 20 years of hands-on experience at some of the most respected studios in the field including Industrial Light & Magic, The Mill, and FuseFX with a global view of industry trends and business dynamics.Available free of charge in the hope that it will help foster a sense of global community among VFX artists, the atlas can be downloaded hereor atvfxatlas.com.We recently had a chance to chat with Bell about his sorely needed, unique research efforts, how the atlas was produced, and what his plans are for updates and related industries.AWN: What led you to create this atlas? Why, and what were your goals?Joseph Bell: Visual Effects have grown into a multi-billion-dollar global industry in a relatively short span of years. And yet we rarely talk about VFX as an industry. Its much easier to find information on how state-of-the-art VFX are created than it is to find information about global trends impacting hundreds of VFX studios and tens of thousands of VFX professionals worldwide. There are conversations that were simply not having as a professional community. My goal with the Atlas is to start building a shared understanding of the VFX industry, one that is grounded in data rather than hearsay and marketing. I hope the Atlas will foster a sense of community that spans borders and time zones. I also want to make it normal to talk openly and publicly about important industry trends, and how VFX businesses are responding to them. The Atlas is a first step in that direction.AWN: How did you produce it can you breakdown the type of research you did, where you found numbers, and how you extrapolated data? JB: The Atlas was created almost entirely using publicly available data from the internet. This allowed me to identify over 55,000 individuals around the world who work in visual effects, including their job title, location, and company affiliation. Obviously, the data doesnt include every person in the VFX industry globally. But it is a rather large and detailed sample!Theres an idea that VFX companies are the only source of accurate information for something like this. To be honest, I think thats a naive view. Many companies would have concerns about revealing details of their internal staffing, and, from a marketing perspective, they all want to look as large and as capable as possible. The approach used for the Atlas sidesteps these issues entirely.I wanted to leave plenty of room for readers to draw their own conclusions from the data. Thats why theres a limited amount of commentary and interpretation in the pages of the Atlas but there are plenty of data tables to browse. I avoided extrapolating the data as much as possible, trying to be totally upfront with readersabout what it does and does not show.AWN: How long did it take to produce, who was involved can you provide any details about the actual process.JB: The Atlas itselftook about three months to produce. I started gathering data in May 2024, but it wasnt until a few months into the project that I realized there was enough to share in an ebook rather than a few charts and graphs. This first edition of the Atlas was created by a very small team. I cleaned the raw data personally, combing through a 55,000-row spreadsheet line by line several times. Did you know that many photographers around the world call their shingle Blur Studio? And a lot of heavy machinery operators work for companies named MPC? I screened out over 12,000 extraneous entries from the data to get to the 55,000 that were used for the Atlas. I then used Tableau software to generate the maps and charts. My wife did all the design and layout work for the Atlas and the website. I also hired two researchers, one in India and the other in Vietnam, to contribute to the coverage of those countries (you can hear from them directly in the Atlas). And, of course, several people kindly wrote pieces, including the foreword by Jeff Okun and various spotlight articles on specific countries. AWN: What do you hope people use this for? And how do you suggest people use this information?JB: The Atlas should be useful for anyone who wants an overview of the VFX industry. Students planning their careers in VFX, investors and journalists trying to grasp the shape of the industry, recruiters looking at demand for and availability of talent, perhaps even managers at VFX studios navigating the business landscape.I think of the Atlas as being like the first ever photograph of the Earth from space. Well certainly be able to capture higher resolution images in the future, but they probablywon't have quite the same impact. If people take away just one thing from the Atlas, I hope its that Visual Effects is a truly global endeavor. Whether you are in Sydney, Mumbai, Toronto, London, or somewhere else entirely, you have industry colleagues around the world who share your passion for the work, and face many of the same challenges. My other suggestion is to use the information to get comfortable talking with colleagues about data. People are rightly skeptical of questionable data and data-driven decision-making that flies in the face of common sense. Data is never perfect, but it can still provide crucial insights. Were at a disadvantage as an industry if we turn our back on tools that thrive in other sectors.AWN: Whats next?JB: Ill produce an expanded second edition of the Atlas this year, assuming theres enough interest. Between now and then, I plan to refresh the data every few months, tracking movement across the industry over time. I think this will be fascinating. People are also asking for a similar treatment of Animation and Video Game studios rest assured, thats on the way.My bigger project is shifting the conversation in the VFX industry. I hope to do some traveling in the coming year, present the work at conferences, and find industry colleagues around the world who see value in opening up discussion of VFX as an industry. The Atlas is just the beginning. Dan Sarto is Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Animation World Network.

Best laptops of CES 2025: These 5 Windows PCs left the biggest mark on the show floor
Kerry Wan/ZDNET2024 was a huge year for laptops. But atCES 2025, the big names in the industry got a chance to show off what they have in store for the rest of 2025. There were a ton of new product announcements, but as always, some stand out more than others. Also:CES 2025: The 12 most impressive products so farThis year saw a bunch of new gaming laptops (particularly with AMD chips), lots of OLED displays, a "rollable" laptop, and thin and lightweight devices all around. But we're always on the lookout for standouts that offer something different -- whether that's a useful new feature, great design, or a fantastic value. We're currently here in Las Vegas on the convention floor, and after going hands-on with every laptop in a square mile radius, we've narrowed down our picks for best laptops at CES 2025.1. Lenovo ThinkPad X9 Aura Edition Kyle Kucharski/ZDNETThe best laptop at CES might not seize your attention at first glance, but upon closer inspection reveals some interesting design elements. Lenovo's 14-inch ThinkPad X9 Aura Edition hits all the right notes: performance, portability, and features while bringing a fresh perspective to the table. As a bit of a departure from previous ThinkPad models (no TrackPoint here), the keyboard and cover are sleek and minimalist, while the bottom of the device has an industrial grooved surface and a completely new design: the "engine hub", a bar that runs the length of the device where the fans and port architecture lives. Also:Every new laptop Lenovo announced at CES 2025: Including its wild 'rollable' modelThe engine hub allows for the clamshell to be particularly thin, while also propping up the device when it's in use. Intended for the mobile professional and business consumer, the ThinkPad X9 houses up to an Intel Core Ultra 7 "Lunar Lake" processor, a vibrant OLED display, 32GB of RAM, up to 2TB of storage, and support for Wi-Fi 7.You wouldn't be the only one to mistake this device for a MacBook, and that certainly wouldn't be an accident. Lenovo took aim at that exact demographic for the design of this device, and it certainly has everything it needs to compete with it.It's a solid device with a strong identity, but practical and ready to get down to business at the same time. It's our favorite laptop we've seen at CES and one that we'll no doubt see more of in the year to come.2. MSI Raider 18 HX AI Kyle Kucharski/ZDNETGaming laptops have hit 2025 with a boom, and a big part of that is thanks to MSI's lineup. The company announced a veritable army of 18-inch heavy-hitters at CES, but our favorite among the crowd is the new Raider 18 HX AI/A18 HX. Why? Well one of the reasons is obvious: it just looks so cool. The laptop features a per-key RGB keyboard, meaning you can change the individual backlighting for each key. Below the trackpad is MSI's Matrix Light Bar, which, when combined with the red accents, gives the device an otherworldly look. Also:MSI goes big at CES 2025 with its lineup of new 18-inch gaming laptopsThe hardware on board is not messing around, either. Like the other 18-inch gaming rigs MSI announced at CES, it comes in either an Intel or AMD configuration, with an Intel Core Ultra 9 or AMD Ryzen 9 9955 processor, up to 96GB of memory, and an 18-inch Mini LED display with a 120Hz refresh rate.Ultimately, if you're going to commit to an 18-inch gaming laptop, it's great to have options, and MSI brings plenty to the consumer with its new lineup. The Raider stands out, however, hitting that sweet spot of high performance, top-tier hardware, and realistic pricing.3. Asus Zenbook A14 Kyle Kucharski/ZDNETAsus rounded out its lineup with the introduction of the Zenbook A14, a thin and exceedingly light 14-inch with the Snapdragon X Plus processor and gorgeous Lumina OLED display. Unlike many of the other ultraportables with OLED displays we saw this year, the Zenbook A14 aims for a more accessible price point, starting at just $1,099.Also:Asus' 2025 laptop lineup features a sleek, understated design ethos (and OLEDs all around)Weighing just 2.16 pounds, I've heard multiple people say that the device feels like an empty clamshell until they open it up and spot the display at work. Asus' proprietary ceraluminum material takes on a slightly different texture on this device than on other Zenbooks, as it's smooth to the touch and lightweight while also being quite sturdy.Qualcomm's ARM-compatible processor ensures battery life that should extend past that 20-hour mark, as well as cool and silent operation. Other notable features include up to 32GB of RAM and up to 1TB SSD. Out of Asus' line, the Zenbook A14 is the one I'm looking forward to the most.4. Razer Blade 16 (2025) Kyle Kucharski/ZDNETGaming laptops used to all be big, bulky machines, but advancements are making them slimmer every year. Now, it appears we've hit the pinnacle of this design change with Razer's new Blade 16 -- the company's thinnest laptop ever, measuring just 0.59 inches thick. That's the thickness I would expect to see on a work computer, not on hardware like this. And the hardware is impressive. It features Nvidia's all-new GeForce RTX 50-Series GPU, the cutting edge of technology for laptop graphics cards, and the AMD Ryzen 9 AI HX 370 processor -- the first time Razer opted for an AMD chip.In my demo of the device, I asked my friends at Razer if they were confident in saying that this year's Blade 16 is both thinner and more heat efficient, and they resoundingly said yes. That, to me, is a feat, since thinner laptops can definitely run hotter. But this is where Razer's updated cooling tech comes into play.It also comes with a QHD+ 240Hz OLED display with a response time of 0.2Ms and an improved keyboard with better key travel distance. Hardware like this puts the Razer Blade 16 at the cutting edge of technology.5. Acer Swift Go 16 AI Kyle Kucharski/ZDNETRounding out the list is the Acer Swift Go 16 AI, our pick for best 16-inch laptop, and one of the most accessible AI PCs we saw at CES. 16-inch laptops offer a good balance between a large display and portability, and the Swift Go 16 AI manages to balance a solid feature set with good hardware and an accessible price. Also:Acer's refreshed laptops may be the most versatile devices I've seen at CES 2025Another AMD machine, the Acer Swift comes with the Ryzen AI 300 Series chipset (either the Ryzen 7 350 or the Ryzen 7 340) alongside a neural processing unit capable of outputting up to 50 TOPS. AMD's new "Zen 5" chip architecture brings up to 8 high-performance cores and 16 threads and paired with the AI processing power means on-device AI applications and LLMs should run smoothly. The Swift Go 16 AI is sleek and rather non-descript looking, but the display looks great, going up to a 3K resolution OLED with a 90Hz refresh rate. The GPU opens the machine to more creative workflows like photo and video editing, and the price is right; it launches this April starting at $949. What is the best laptop of CES 2025? Lenovo's ThinkPad X9 Aura Edition takes the top spot for us as the best laptop at CES 2025. It has a stunning display, strong suite of hardware, and a lightweight form factor with some refreshing design concepts. Of course, it's hard to say for sure just how it will shape up as we haven't had a chance to go test it more thoroughly, but looking at all the evidence, we're confident it will be a top performer. It wasn't the only impressive model at the event, though. Four other laptops really impressed us this year.Best Laptop of CESStarting PriceDisplayCPUGPURAMLenovo ThinkPad X9 Aura Edition$1,39915-inch OLEDIntel Core Ultra 7 200VUp to Intel Xe2 Integrated GPUup to 32GBMSI Raider 18 HX AIN/A18-inch Mini LEDAMD Ryzen 9 9955Up to Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090up to 96GBAsus Zenbook A14$89914-inch Lumina OLEDSnapdragon X PlusQualcomm Adrenoup to 32GBRazer Blade 16 (2025)N/A16-inch QHD+ OLEDAMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370Up to Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090up to 64GBAcer Swift Go 16 AI$94916-inch 3K OLEDAMD Ryzen AI 300AMD Radeon 800Mup to 32GB Show more How did I choose these laptops? Although none of these laptops are available for purchase yet, the method used to choose them remained the same. We looked for laptops at CES that had a unique perspective or design approach, well-equipped hardware, and practical features sets.Display: Good displays deliver high-resolution visuals, vibrant colors, and fast refresh speeds; all of which are essential for achieving good workflow, immersive entertainment, or both.Hardware: CES 2025 saw the introduction of several new generations of processors and graphics cards. So we looked for laptops sporting these components.Features:The full array of features on these devices will undoubtedly be revealed as time goes on, but we're already seeing some notable inclusions, such as support for Wi-Fi 7 and large SSDs. CES 2025: Dolby Wants To Make Your Car A Home Theater On Wheels
Li MegaPrakhar KhannaDolby has partnered with several car manufacturers over the last few months to offer Dolby Atmos surround sound in vehicles. Now, it wants to make the experience even more immersive with Dolby Vision. At CES 2025, the company announced its collaboration with Samsung Display to bring Dolby Vision to more cars around the world. But whats the need for HDR on a cars infotainment system? How many of us really consume video content in our cars? For context, Dolby Vision is an HDR technology that offers vibrant colorsthose that truly pop on your displays. From phones like the recently-lauched OnePlus 13 and Vivo X200 Pro to TVs, its integrated into various devices to give your a more immersive viewing experience. Now, its coming to cars.Does Dolby Vision In A Car Even Make Sense?Li Mega's infotainment screens with Dolby VisionPrakhar KhannaLast year, when I experienced Dolby Atmos in a car, I kind of knew what to expectimmersive surround sound while listening to my favorite music on the road. But heading into the Dolby Vision in-car demo this year was different. I didnt know what to expect because I couldnt quite understand the use case for it. However, after sitting in the Li Mega and experiencing Dolby Vision Atmos for cars, I want it in my car right now.MORE FOR YOUAs it turns out, there are a few use cases and enough incentive for consumers to want Dolby Vision in their cars. Its supported on the infotainment system as well as the screens (if available) for riders in the back. Its not about giving you a better look at your controls with HDR; its meant to bring a TV-like viewing experience to your car.For example, when your partner goes for a quick grocery stroll while you wait in the car, and 10 minutes stretch into 30. You no longer need to watch your favorite content on a small mobile screen. Instead, you can fire up the infotainment system and tune into whatever you like. However, it does raise concerns. For instance, will you be able to watch content while the driver is driving? And will the experience be consistent across different cars?Li Mega's infotainment screen with Dolby VisionPrakhar KhannaDolby says that car manufacturers can tune the settings to decide whether users can watch content on the infotainment system in a moving car. You should expect different results across vehicles because:Like Atmos, where manufacturers can use different numbers of speakers to tune the Atmos experience, Dolby Visions display quality could vary.I experienced it in a high-end car with anti-reflective OLED screens. While Dolby assures that the same tuning can be applied to LCDs, the experience may still depend on factors like display size, reflectivity, and the number of screens in the car. While Im still skeptical about having HDR displays in cars, I can see why some would want Dolby Vision Atmos in their cars.

This reflects the wafers thin, grid-like texture. The term eventually passed into Middle English as wafer, referring to a thin, crisp cake. The connection to honeycomb or weaving highlights the light, patterned appearance of wafers.Let me know how you fared with your Wordle today on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. AMD Radeon RX 9070 benchmarked in Call of Duty, could be a match for Nvidia's RTX 4080 Super
Something to look forward to: AMD's paper launch of Radeon RX 9070 GPUs at CES was disappointingly light on details. However, an unsanctioned benchmark for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 provides a brief glimpse into the performance of the vanilla 9070 graphics card model. Granted, we advise everyone to wait for detailed reviews and the cards' full release before drawing any kind of conclusion. IGN got a chance to benchmark AMD's upcoming Radeon RX 9070 GPU in Call of Duty Black Ops 6 by discreetly running the test on a system equipped with the GPU at the CES show floor. Although the results appear similar to Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4080 Super, like-for-like comparisons in more games will provide a clearer picture when time comes. The RX 9070 averaged 99fps in native 4K in Black Ops 6's in-game benchmark tool using alpha drivers. For comparison, the RTX 4080 Super can reach roughly 129fps in 4K in DLSS quality mode, which upscales the game from 2560 x 1440 resolution. Based on early this data, the results look promising for Team Red.Although AMD has not disclosed detailed specifications for the RX 9000 series, the company's new naming scheme suggests these cards are positioned to compete with Nvidia's upcoming RTX 5070. Preliminary information indicates that the RTX 5070 might slightly outperform the current RTX 4070 Super.Although AMD has yet to disclose detailed specifications for the RX 9000 series, the company's new naming scheme implies they are positioned to compete with Nvidia's upcoming RTX 5070. Preliminary information indicates that the RTX 5070 might slightly outperform the current RTX 4070 Super. If paper napkin math aligns AMD's competing product with the 4080 Super, a serious fight could ensue this year in the mid-range sector, where the most popular GPUs reside. However, other factors lurk in the background.First, Black Ops 6 is kinder to AMD cards than other modern gaming titles. Second, the CES RX 9070 benchmark was conducted using AMD's new Ryzen 9950X3D CPU, which has not been widely tested alongside Nvidia GPUs.Third, the game doesn't use ray tracing, so AMD's claims of substantial RT performance improvements remain untested. Upcoming reviews should also reveal how the company's new AI-based FSR4 upscaling technology compares to Nvidia DLSS and Intel XeSS. It is entirely possible that the upcoming Radeon GPUs will perform exceptionally well in rasterization against the RTX 50 series GPUs. However, Nvidia will likely maintain an advantage in upscaling support, particularly if DLSS 4's transition to transformer-based models enhances graphics quality, as some early previews suggest. // Related StoriesPricing is probably the most crucial detail regarding the RX 9070 that has not been undisclosed either. With 16 GB of VRAM, it could gain an advantage over Nvidia's mid-range offerings, depending on how AMD counters the RTX 5070's aggressive $549 price tag.AMD has also yet to confirm the release dates for the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT, only committing to a Q1 2025 launch window. However, a leak from B&H suggests that pre-orders may open on January 23. Meanwhile, Nvidia's RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 are set to begin shipping on January 30, followed by the RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti in February.

Robotic pool cleaner with jaw-dropping 15-hour battery life revealed at CES 2025
html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd"iGarden Tech company iGarden revealed several new products at CES 2025, but the TurboX and TurboX Master robotic pool cleaners were undoubtedly the most exciting. Both are designed to make pool maintenance effortless but its the TurboX Master and its staggering 15-hour runtime that stood out from the rest of the iGarden lineup.Digital Trends received compensation for considering coverage of these products. The brand had no input on the editorial content and did not influence the coverage. The iGarden TurboX Master is expected to launch in April, and its poised to make waves in the robotic pool cleaner marketplace. While most products can only run for a few hours before needing a recharge, this one can clean for 15 hours before running out of juice. In fact, iGarden says it holds the Guinness Record for the longest continuous operation of a robotic pool cleaner. This is due to its unique AI-inverter technology, which results enhanced battery efficiency without skimping on a premium clean.Recommended VideosFeaturing an array of infrared sensors, a gyroscope, and the ability to return to its drop-off point once its battery is drained, its a well-designed robot. It looks pretty sleek, too, thanks to a supercar-inspired design that looks just as good as premium pool cleaners from big names like Polaris, Aiper, and Beatbot. Please enable Javascript to view this contentCapable of cleaning both the waterline and removing algae and other stains from the pool floor, it could be a solid choice for autonomous maintenance. According to iGarden, it works with a wide variety of pool shapes and sizes, and is capable of cleaning every inch of your pool.RelatedBest of all, you can easily create cleaning schedules or specify areas that need to be tackled more often such as walls or floors. And because the pool cleaner features a month of standby time, you wont have to recharge the device or worry about manual maintenance very often. That means (depending on your settings and pool size), you might only need to charge the robot once a month. Considering most other robotic pool cleaners need to be recharged after each cleaning, thats a huge win for iGarden.Toss in a touchscreen interface, a two-year warranty, and a UV-resistant design, and the iGarden TurboX Master is definitely worth keeping an eye on. Expect to learn more about pricing in the coming weeks.Editors Recommendations
