If you need to catch up or refresh your memory, Amazon has a great deal on the recently released Blu-ray of Severance Season 1. Normally $43, Severance Season 1 is discounted to $25.79.Now's a great time to sign up for Apple TV+. Along with Severance, Mythic Quest Season 4 premieres later this month (January 29), and it will be followed up by the spin-off anthology series Side Quest in March. In addition to the two premieres, you can catch up on Silo--an excellent adaptation of Hugh Howey's great sci-fi novel Wool--ahead of its Season 2 finale on January 17. Severance Season 1 on Blu-ray $25.79 (was $43) Severance was GameSpot's pick for the best TV show of 2022. The sci-fi series is set in the near future where technological advancements allow people to "sever" the memories of their work life from their personal life. The benefit for people who undergo the procedure is that they live their lives without ever remembering working (or other unpleasant things, as the show slowly begins to reveal). But in practice, this means that severed people are effectively two people--they're one person in regular life, an "outie," and a second person, or "innie," at work, because the work version of them never experiences anything but work. It's like falling asleep the second you step out of the office and waking up the second you step back in. Preorder at Amazon Across the nine-episode first season, that leads to some pretty spooky and dystopian situations, sprinkled with a lot of corporate culture satire. Severance is both funny and creepy in equal measure, and that's a lot of what makes it so good.Continue Reading at GameSpot

  • Nintendo Switch 2 leaks are everywhere. Heres why
    www.polygon.com
It was to be expected that some details about Nintendo Switch 2 would leak before it was revealed. Details about upcoming game consoles always leak before their official announcement. Unlike a game in development, too many people outside the consoles parent company need to know about the device in advance for the secret to be kept: third-party publishers and developers, parts suppliers, accessory manufacturers, retailers, and the people in the factories that make the things. Somebody somewhere in this sprawling chain is going to crack. Somethings going to get out.Even so, the situation with Switch 2 at the moment is extreme. (Even the name has leaked.) The last few weeks have seen a blizzard of leaks, including apparent photos of final hardware. The dam has broken to the extent that peripherals manufacturer Genki, which claims to have obtained a real Switch 2 through back channels, has thrown caution to the wind and shown a mock-up of the console at CES. Genki even has a detailed, animated render of Nintendos new console on its website.Throughout most of last year, it was business as usual in Switch 2 leak land. A few details emerged in reports sourced from behind-closed-doors meetings with Nintendos partners, and a pretty complete, if hazy, picture of the consoles form and features was built up: the magnetic Joy-Cons, the AI-assisted upscaling tech, the backward compatibility. Then, in September, the leaks shifted up a gear. Molds, schematics, and hardware specifications emerged from manufacturers in China that were detailed enough for one YouTuber to 3D print a mock-up of the new console. Since then, corroborating evidence has piled up to the extent that only a handful of mysteries remain (mostly, what the new button, the extra USB-C port, and the optical sensor are for). Weve even got a good sense of the color schemes. Its an unprecedented amount of data on a console that hasnt even been announced yet. What happened? In all probability, its a simple matter of timing. Reports indicate that Nintendo originally planned to launch the Switch 2 in 2024, but delayed it into 2025 to allow time to finish new games and build up enough inventory to prevent stock shortages. But this delay must have presented the company with a dilemma. If it announced the new console in 2024, it could have the knock-on effect of thwarting original Switch sales during the crucial holiday period. This holiday season, I couldnt resist sharing this gift with you all. Some might call it an early reveal but I call it the best-kept secret of the year. pic.twitter.com/btAcUo9j0Q NextHandheld (@NextHandheld) December 25, 2024This hadnt been a concern when Nintendo announced the original Switch with a video in October 2016 the Wii U was a sales dud and Nintendo was keen to move on. But the Switch still sells in large numbers to this day, and it seems Nintendo likely judged that announcing its next move wasnt worth the potential hit to revenue. This strategy is consistent with Nintendos choice to reveal one detail about Switch 2 before the holidays that it would be backward-compatible, thus reassuring players that it was still worth buying Switch games.Nintendos strategy pulled its preparations for Switch 2 in opposing directions. On the one hand, it seemingly wanted a late announcement and short promotional campaign in order to protect Switch sales. On the other, it reportedly wanted a long manufacturing lead-in before launch to build up a healthy amount of stock. This resulted in an unusual situation: Nintendo was likely gearing up for full Switch 2 production months before the console was even announced. What appear to be final retail units have even started to appear in the wild all still before an announcement has been made.So why hasnt Nintendo a famously secretive and litigious company that just loves a takedown notice appeared to do anything to squash the leaks? This is essentially unknowable, and Nintendo is never likely to say. But it seems likely that Nintendo leadership was fully aware that leaks were an inevitable consequence of this launch strategy, and has decided to accept them, in this case, as the cost of doing business. The good news is that, with that holiday sales period out of the way, we can probably expect an announcement very soon. More than that: The Switch 2 is a tangible reality. It exists; its being made right now. That doesnt necessarily mean its launch is imminent. But it might not be too far off.

  • A new Adventure Time comic series returns to the land of Ooo
    www.polygon.com
Finn the Human, Jake the Dog, and the rest of their friends will return to comics this April, when a new Adventure Time series kicks off seven years after the old comic series ended in 2018. The main Adventure Time series officially ended in 2018, but the Adventure Time world didnt end there. Limited series Adventure Time: Distant Lands brought four hour-long specials, each focused on a different set of characters, starting in 2020. Spin-off series Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake debuted in 2023, and followed Finn and Jakes gender-swapped counterparts and Simon Petrikov, the former Ice King. And it looks like the adventure continues on with this new comic line. The comic series will have new issues every month, with rotating artists and writers, including but not limited to Nick Winn (Bloody Mary), Caroline Cash (PeePee PooPoo), Asia Simone (Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur: Wreck and Roll), Jorge Monlongo (Over the Garden Wall: Hallow Town), Brenda Hickey (My Little Pony), and former Adventure Time writer and storyboard artist Derek Ballard. The first issue comes from Winn and kicks off a story arc called Best of Buds.Adventure Time was such a huge part of me growing up, Winn said in a press release. Not only was it hilarious, but it had such an emotional intelligence that very few shows could pull off back then. Being able to revisit the land of Ooo through Oni Press has really been such a joy and a challenge to build something new while still keeping the energy and charm the show cast on me in middle school!Adventure Time (2025) #1 will be available on April 9.

  • Instagram Is Going to Start Adding Politics Back Into Your Feed (Heres How to Block It)
    lifehacker.com
Do you like your Instagram algorithm, but hate that it's missing political posts from accounts you don't follow? You're in luck: Starting this week in the U.S. (and next week for the rest of the world) Meta is going to start adding political content to your recommendations on Instagram and Threads by default. If you're thinking, "Hey, didn't Instagram have the exact opposite approach to this situation last year?" you'd be right. In February of 2024, the company announced it would explicitly not suggest political content from accounts you didn't follow. Unless you actively sought out this content, you could browse the app in peace, left to check out whatever interests you have outside politics. However, it is no longer February 2024. January 2025 is a much different place for Instagram, Meta, and the U.S. As Mark Zuckerberg drastically changes policies surrounding what you can say on Meta's platforms, Instagram (and, by extension, Threads) are making changes as well. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, took to Threads to announce the changes, stating that while he still doesn't believe Meta should be showing political content to people from accounts they don't follow, "a lot of people have been very clear that they want this content." View on ThreadsIndeed, it seems my Instagram settings have already flipped over, while my Threads settings have yet to. (But I have no doubt they will.) Without intervention, you'll likely start seeing more political content that may anger, upset, worry, or frustrate you. Luckily, there is something you can do about it.Removing political content from your Instagram and Threads feedsLet's start with Instagram: Open your profile, then tap the hamburger menu in the top right. Scroll down to the "What you see" section, then choose "Suggested content." Here, tap "Political content," and you'll find three options: Standard, the default, which shows "some" suggested political content; See more, which shows you more political content, if that's your jam; and See less, which is the option you want. Despite the option having "less" in the name, Instagram says it will not share political content with you when it recognizes it, so it should be enough to remove most of the content you'd come into contact with. If it's not, however, back out of this page, then tap the toggle next to Snooze suggested posts in feed. This will remove this type of content from your feed for the next 30 days. It's not perfect, but at least you have a month of peace. Credit: Jake Peterson These options should be present in much the same way on Threads, but reaching them is a bit different. Again, head to your profile, then tap the hamburger menu. Only this time, choose "Account," then "Political content." Right now, I still see the old Suggest political content setting, which is off by default.
