This security system shoots paintballs at intruders
Doorbell cameras are standard fare these days. More and more people have invested in connected security systemss, as the technology has become both cheaper and more user friendly. Theres one important thing these system wont do, however: shoot people and animals with paintballs. That is, however, pretty much the Eve PaintCams whole M.O. Carrying the somewhat misleading tagline Safety Simplified, there is a quartet of different models rigging on the same theme. After running both Kickstarter and Indiegogo campaigns, Slovenian startup OZ-IT set up shop at CES 2025 this week to show the tech world what is at very least a novel approach.Crowdfunding videos and media handouts highlight the systems prowess with both human and animal targets thats intruders in the case of the former and unwanted wildlife with the later. The Eve, Eve+, and EvePro are largely targeted at people, while the camouflaged Simba is primarily aimed at deterring wild animals.Depending on the configuration you choose, the system has some combination of pet detection (Eve+, EvePro), face recognition (EvePro), and animal recognition (Eve Simba) AI features. There are a range of projectiles (paintballs), as well, including one with capsaicin, the chemical compound that gives chili peppers their heat, which the company says is legal in most countries. They also offer special projectiles for specific animals and ones filled with UV paint to help the police track a tagged intruder down.

Tesla launches new-look Model Y in China
Tesla has revealed a new-look Model Y meant for the Chinese and other Asian-Pacific markets, marking the first major update to the SUV since its launch in 2020. The redesign comes as Tesla finished 2024 having delivered fewer vehicles than it did in 2023. It was the first year-over-year drop since the company started selling mass market cars in 2012. The new Model Y is slated to start deliveries as early as March in China and some surrounding countries. Its not yet clear when Tesla will bring this version to Europe and the U.S., though it took around four months for that to happen with the updated Model 3 last year. The changes to the new Model Y which was internally codenamed Juniper track pretty closely to the ones Tesla made to its Model 3 sedan in 2023, while also borrowing some design elements from the companys other projects. The front end is less bubbly and has a sharper edge to it, like the new Model 3. But the new Model Y also eschews the bug-eye headlights for a continuous light bar running across the front a design seen on the Cybertruck and the prototype of the Cybercab. Tesla also ditched the traditional tail lights in favor of a singular light that stretches across the rear of the car under a small protrusion in the hatch. Tesla claims this cross-car lamp is the first indirect reflective body panel taillight of its kind.Inside, the Model Y refresh has the same ambient light bar found in the new Model 3, which wraps around most of the cabin and can be changed to different colors. There are powered rear seats and a new touchscreen display for rear passengers, and Tesla says the suspension has been improved and that road noise has been reduced. The SUV is a few pounds lighter than its predecessor and can therefore eke out a bit more range, but it seems there is otherwise no radical change on that side of things. This story is developing

    Foster Mansion // c.1860
This large, Italianate style mansion is located at 417 Sharon-Goshen Turnpike, the main street through West Cornwall Village, Connecticut. The house was built around 1860 for Stephen Foster (c.1816-1863) a merchant and railroad contractor who had constructed a portion of the Housatonic Line railroad near West Cornwall. He and his wife, Helen, previously lived in a Greek Revival style house across the road until they moved into this stately residence. Mr. Foster would not get to enjoy his mansion long as he died in 1863. Helen Foster remained at the home until her death in 1875. The high-style Italianate residence was likely built by master-carpenter C. W. Marsh, and features all the hallmarks of the style: overhanging eaves with decorative brackets, elaborate window and door moulding, two-over-two windows, and a shallow hipped roof with dormer.

It entered Middle English as "craulen" in the 14th century, influenced by the Old Norse root and potentially related to the Middle Dutch "kruipen," meaning "to creep." Over time, it evolved to describe slow, dragging movement, often close to the ground, resembling the motion of creeping or clawing along.Let me know how you fared with your Wordle today on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. CES 2025: AI, Health Wearables, And Smart Glasses Take Center Stage
CES remains the premier show highlighting the advancement of tech.Anadolu via Getty ImagesAs I write this, CES 2025 is on its third day. Once the show closes on January 10 and I have more time to digest what I saw and the big themes and products released, I will share those in my column early next week. However, I have determined three key trends that have run through the show so far.The first is that AI was everywhere at the show. You could not find a vendor that did not mention AI in its booth displays or marketing material. AI was demonstrated in many ways, but the central theme manifested in the term "smart" applied to devices, apps, and services using AI in some form. There were smart TVs, cars, trucks, boats, and motorcycles. There were smart kitchen appliances, vacuums, various business and consumer robots, watches, etc. And, of course, my favoritesmart toilets.Echoing this smart focus was the second big theme of health-related wearables. New smart rings, like the one from Ringconn can now detect sleep apnea. Ultrahuman and Aura both showed new health monitoring features in their new rings. Dexcom showed the over-the-counter consumer-focused Stelo which monitors glucose to reveal how food, exercise, and even sleep affect your glucose. This device is especially important for those with pre-diabetes as well as those who need to understand how their exercise and foods impact blood sugars.Abbot showed off two similar over-the-counter devices; Lingo, sold as a wellness product for people who do not have diabetes. The other is Abbott's new Libre Rio device, intended for adults with Type 2 diabetes who do not use insulin, posing a direct challenge to Dexcom's Stelo device.MORE FOR YOUThe folks at Techradar shared a more detailed look at the health wearables at this year's CES and included details about the Garmin Instinct 3 smartwatch, the Circular Ring 2, Withings Omnia, and others that were front and center of the wearable health products introduced at CES 2025.The third theme of the show was an emphasis on smart glasses. Xreal had a large booth that showed off its new Xreal One and Xreal Pro.I have been using the Xreal smart glasses for over a year. These are my go-to glasses for watching videos. The current version can give the wearer a virtual 100-inch screen, and the new versions display a visual screen, which appears to be a 500-inch screen. I use these to watch videos and movies when I fly, and it feels like I am in a theater, not in a cramped plane seat. I spoke with Xreal's CEO, and he shared an excellent roadmap for their glasses that will make them smarter and with new designs in the future.I saw at least seven new smart glasses at the show. One interesting one was from Even Realities called the Even G1. It displays information on the glass lenses themselves. I had a demo from their CEO, and as he spoke in Chinese, it translated what he said into English on the glass lenses. The folks at ZDNet tested many other smart glasses at CES 2025 and shared their experiences in this link. The CES 2025 session I moderated on Tuesday, January 8, was centered on XR headsets and smart glasses. My panel included Jason McGuigan, head of Virtual Reality at Lenovo, Kelly Ingham, VP Wearables and Research Partners, Reality Labs, at Meta and Scott Meyers, VP of Hardware at Snap. The session focused on XR headsets and smart glasses, and the panelists mostly agreed that XR headsets will continue to be used more for gaming, many enterprise apps, especially training, and in some educational circles.Kelly Ingham shared how the Quest headset has become the best-selling XR headset in the market, with thousands of apps supporting its Horizon OS platform. While gaming is at the core of most Quest models, it has thousands of apps related to a multitude of areas, such as Supernatural for exercise, one called Bigscreen, a social media video-streaming app, Open Brush, a 3D painting app, and one called Whirligig, a media player to watch local files in VR.Jason McGuigan of Lenovo shared how their XR headsets are being used in many business and industrial applications and pointed out that their core audience has been enterprise and business companies. These firms have adopted XR for areas like digital twins, manufacturing, and many forms of enterprise solutions. We quickly switched to the subject of smart glasses as all three panelists have products in this area and are experts. Smart glasses are poised to become one of the hottest areas in tech over the next three years.Scott Myers shared how their Snap Spectacles have become the leading smart glasses in the market today. They already have hundreds of thousands of users and developers supporting the Snap OS and will continue adding more apps and features in 2025.Lenovo also has new smart glasses in the works, and Jason sees this as another important area for Lenovos continued investment.Kelly Ingham of Meta gave an update on Orion, their new smart glass project they demoed at their developer conference in September 2025. They already have thousands of developers supporting their Meta Horizon OS and it will be one of the important platforms for XR headsets and smart glasses going forward.Kelly also gave an update on the Meta-Rayban Wayfarer glasses. She said they are working on adding more AI features, one of which I am personally deeply interested in: translation. She said this is already working and being tested and should be released later this year. The panel also discussed Google's introduction of Android XR OS in December of 2025.This new XR and smart glasses OS will most likely become a powerful new way for major hardware vendors to enter the smart glasses market by 2026. So far, Samsung, Qualcomm, Sony, and Xreal have committed to Android XR, and you can expect Google to have its own version, too.Once Google releases the Android XR developers kit, we should see thousands of Android XR apps appear soon as hardware makers release their smart glasses supporting this OS.Apple is the other company we expect to be in the smart glasses mix. Apple has had smart glasses in the works since at least 2016 and is expected to be another major player in the market. Apple has shown that it can be late to a market and still dominate it. Whatever they eventually bring to market in hardware will have a strong base of developers trained in AR Kit, the third major platform for smart glasses.Snap has a good lead in this area but will face new competition, as will others with their own OS.The panel also shared that they see smart glasses eventually becoming the most ubiquitous way people will get digital information and interact with it. This does not mean that it will replace a PC or even a smartphone, but as a digital wearable that is always on and accessible, it could become our most powerful way to navigate our digital world.Toward the end of the discussion, I asked the panelists what technical hurdles we still have to help smart glasses deliver the best user experience. One significant issue was identified, which poses a genuine technical challenge. This concern pertains to the specific type of lenses required to project information or data onto the glasses effectively.I have been working on this area for 10 years and have met with most of the optics companies working on it. Despite recent advancements, we remain several years away from realizing optimal lenses for smart glasses. These lenses must simultaneously deliver in-glass information, have enhanced energy efficiency, and achieve the resolution necessary for a seamless user experience.CES remains daunting, with 135,000 in attendance and over two million square feet of exhibit space in seven venues across Las Vegas. I averaged 22,000 steps each day. As someone who has been to 50 CES shows so far, I find it more difficult to cover this show the bigger it gets. However, for me and many others, the trek is worth it to see the latest and greatest technology presented in a single-show environment. With new developments in XR, AI, and wearable tech, CES 2025 has solidified its place as a barometer for the next wave of innovation. As we move into 2025 and beyond, its exciting to think about how these trends will evolve and transform our digital experiences.Disclosure: Lenovo, Google, Qualcomm, Samsung and Apple subscribe to Creative Strategies research reports along with many other high tech companies around the world.

AMD FSR 4 upscaling shows much improved image quality, fewer artifacts, but it will be exclusive to newer GPUs
The big picture: With FSR 4, AMD has finally integrated machine learning into its upscaler, following in the footsteps of Nvidia DLSS and Intel XeSS. Previous versions relied on spatial and temporal upsampling, which supports most hardware but ultimately delivers inferior results. Our good friends at Hardware Unboxed have provided an early look at FSR 4 running Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Although the analysis is preliminary, the visual improvements over FSR 3.1 are immediately noticeable. While AMD has yet to provide detailed specifications for the Radeon RX 9070 GPUs introduced at CES 2025, various outlets have had access to systems running them on the show floor. One such exhibit highlights that the company's FSR 4 upscaling technology dramatically surpasses its predecessor. In Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, FSR 3.1 struggles with ghosting, transparency issues, and other visual artifacts. To showcase FSR 4's improvements, AMD had two monitors running the game side by side in 4K performance mode a setting where FSR traditionally struggles against DLSS.Although Hardware Unboxed captured the footage by recording the monitors which is far from ideal, the improvements are quite noticeable, even when viewed through YouTube compression. Visual elements such as particles, transparent surfaces, Ratchet's fur, and distant details appear much sharper with FSR 4. The artifacts that marred FSR 3 are almost entirely eliminated.Unfortunately, the demo did not include frame rate counters, so proper scrutiny of any performance impact must wait until we can thoroughly test FSR 4.AMD has, however, confirmed one significant limitation: FSR 4 requires a Radeon RX 9000 GPU. When AMD launches the RX 9070 and 9070 XT in the coming weeks, these cards will go head-to-head with Nvidia's GeForce RTX 50 series and DLSS 4 technology. // Related StoriesA recent preview by Digital Foundry showed DLSS 4's notable improvements to image quality and frame generation. The new transformer-based AI model reduces visual flaws, and multi-frame generation can triple or quadruple framerates with a relatively minor detriment to latency. While Nvidia's new multi-frame rendering technology is exclusive to RTX 50 series GPUs, all GeForce RTX graphics card owners will benefit from the image quality enhancements in games that support DLSS. Meanwhile, AMD's vague details on FSR 4 suggest that the update might apply to any game that uses FSR 3.1.At TechSpot, we plan to provide a detailed comparison of FSR 4, DLSS 4, and their predecessors when time comes that is, after we get our hands on the new GPUs, and after we can fully benchmark them. Until then, the only third-party performance data we have comes from a Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 benchmark, which suggests that the RX 9070 could compete with Nvidia's RTX 4080 Super and possibly the RTX 5070 / Ti.

FAA issues stern warning after drone and aircraft collide near L.A. fires
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has warned people against flying their drones near the wildfires currently ravaging Pacific Palisades and other parts of Souther California, stressing that such flights could prevent emergency response flights from tackling the ongoing blazes.Do not fly your drone near or around areas affected by the L.A. wildfires, the FAA said in a post on X on Thursday. Anyone who interferes with emergency response operations may face severe fines and criminal prosecution. If you fly, emergency responders cant.Recommended VideosIt added: The FAA has not authorized anyone unaffiliated with the L.A. firefighting operations to fly drones in the TFRs [temporary flight restrictions]. Unauthorized drone flights can delay airborne fire response and pose a threat to firefighters on the ground allowing wildfires to grow larger The FAA treats these violations seriously and immediately considers swift enforcement action for these offenses. Please enable Javascript to view this contentIts not clear how many people are putting their dronesin the air in a bid to capture aerial imagery of the devastation, but in a statement posted on its website on Thursday, the agency revealed that a firefighting aircraft had struck a drone while it was operating over the Palisades Fire in Los Angeles on the same day.It added that despite the collision, the aircraft was able to land safely. The FAA has launched an investigation into the incident.Elaborating on its social media posts, the FAA said that drone flights in restricted areas are punishable by up to 12 months in prison, adding that it could also impose a civil penalty of up to $75,000 against any drone pilot who interferes with wildfire suppression, law enforcement, or emergency response operations when temporary flight restrictions are in place. It emphasized that when a drone is spotted in a restricted zone, it can lead to delays in deploying firefighting aircraft, enabling the wildfires to expand to more areas.Several major wildfires are continuing to burn in Southern California, with many of them still uncontained, according to the latest reports on Thursday night. Officials have confirmed at least six deaths, though the figure could rise once investigators are able to properly enter the devastated neighborhoods.Editors Recommendations
