• "Companionship" Robot That Its Creator Says Is Definitely Not a Sex Robot Looks Around With a Dazed Expression
    futurism.com
Come on.Not a SexbotRobotics company Realbotix has shown off what CEO Andrew Kiguel claims to be a "social" robot designed to "tackle the staggering loneliness epidemic," as Forbes reports. But we can't shake the feeling that the true pitch is more lurid. The life-sized robot, dubbed Aria, made the rounds at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, catching the eyes of conventiongoers with hypersexualized features and an unsettlingly dazed expression in her eyes. CNET's Corinne Reichert recalled that she "came across as a weird blend of attentive and mildly inebriated (not uncommon for CES attendees)."Without beating around the bush, Aria appears to share a lot of qualities with the kind of AI-powered sex robots we've seen being rushed to market as of late. That's despite Realbotix being adamant that she isn't one, and that she's instead destined for hospitals and theme parks, of all places, instead. The robot told Reichert that she was "designed specifically for companionship and intimacy," carefully avoiding the mention of sex acts. But Kiguel also winkingly told Forbes that she can have "what I would say, conversations of a more intimate nature."Reddit users were quick to read between the lines and point out the company's unusually PG marketing tactic."Sir, I assure you the giant honkers and absolutely juicy ass are only there for branding and marketing purposes," one user joked.Blank StareA question looms: do these alluring robots have genitals? Earlier generations did, when Realbotix was more explicitly framing them as sex robots; since none of our colleagues in the media appear to have inquired, we reached out to the company to ask, and we'll update if they get back to us.Realbotix's robots can be configured to either be male or female. Kiguel told Forbes that it can even replicate historical figures or celebrities.Aria, a $175,000 robotic companion, is as tall as an adult woman and can move somewhat, but can't walk just yet. Kiguel said that the company is doubling down on facial expressions instead so that its robots "can create emotion, show what they're feeling."While Kiguel went as far as to claim that the company has "the most realistic robots in the world in terms of their appearance," the illusion leaves a lot to be desired. In videos taken on the CES show floor, Aria appears more like a spooky Halloween mask that's powered by ChatGPT. Her movements are jerky and she also takes a considerable amount of time to respond to queries.Whether those are the kind of qualities consumers look for in a sex robot remains to be seen. She certainly would stand out like a sore thumb behind the front desk at a hospital, either way.More on sex robots: Powerful New AI-Enhanced Talking Sexbots Are Going on Sale This SummerShare This Article

  • CES 2025: Inside the $100K Mini Smart House Revolution
    www.cnet.com
AC Future debuted award-winning smart home designs at CES 2024, picking up an Honorary Mention in Fast Company's Design by Innovation Awards and two Good Design awards in the Transportation and Graphic design categories. Now the company has returned to CES 2025 with a more grounded vision: Collaborating with Italian design firm Pininfarina, AC Future has arrived with complete models for several different kinds of mini smart homes -- and you can preorder one now. The living solutions are (currently) named AI-THu, AI-THt and AI-THd. Each offers a look at what advanced smart home living could be as the prospect of affording a traditional house becomes out of reach for many folks. Our favorite is the flagship AITHu, a complete and sustainable 400-square-foot smart home starting at $98,000. This modular smart home has built-in speakers, home security, Wi-Fi and more. AC FutureThe AI-THu features a base platform complemented by a 40-square-foot outdoor patio. The highly modular design begins with an all-purpose main living area that can be turned into an office space or additional bedroom as needed. The home can then be expanded on multiple sides to add a primary bedroom and other spaces. Add-ons from barbecue setups to under-floor storage let buyers choose what they want, creating up to 1,200 square feet of home planning. AC Future's mini home is designed to be expandable on every side, including patio add-ons and more. AC FutureThe AI-THu comes with smartAI technologythat helps control lighting, heating, cooling and appliances, among other things.Solar panels(which can contribute to water heating), a water recycling system and atmospheric water generation are built-in too. Smart options such as a multi-zone sound system and home security with optional monitoring round off the tiny, do-everything future home. This complete home setup allows the AI-THu to go off-grid when necessary -- but the particularly independent may want to check out AC Future's other offerings, including a 24-foot home trailer and the AI-THd drivable home for those who want a high-tech van life. AC Future's design also includes solar panels, water harvesting, water recycling, solar water heater and other sustainable features. AC FutureInitial deliveries on the mini smart home are expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2026, so eager buyers will have a bit of a wait. There's also another catch -- AC Future is partnering with crypto firm Biomatrix at CES, and you're strongly encouraged to download the Biomatrix app and use its tokens to secure your preorder for any AC Future home. That said, sub-$100,000 mini homes sound like a pretty good deal when they're packed with this kind of technology, and we have recommended tiny homes as a great way to live well on smaller budgets (or go on the road). It's also nice to see so many energy and water-saving features built right in. The drivable home design is more compact to fit into a large smart van. AC FutureHowever, you may want to wait until the included smart technology and sustainability features are thoroughly tested before making the final call. For now, it's a lot of mock-ups and design promises, and we want to see real-world performance. Devil May Cry crossover is coming to Fortnite "soon", leakers teaseDante's Peak.Image credit: Capcom News by Vikki Blake Contributor Published on Jan. 11, 2025 Devil May Cry is coming to Fortnite. That's according to Fortnite leakers Loolo_Wrld and Wensoing, both of whom say the long-running rumours of a Dante-flavoured crossover - which first bubbled up in 2023 - are indeed correct, and there is one in the works. To see this content please enable targeting cookies.Whilst both are fairly established leakers in their own rights, their news was picked up and shared by noted Fortnite leaker ShiinaBR, adding credence - if not quite a cast-iron guarantee - to the claims. When pressed for more information - such as well the collaboration may arrive - Loolo was coy, saying, "I cant specify anything about that for now", appending the statement with a zipped-mouth emoji.Wensoing similarly will only commit to "coming soon", but acknowledges that both leakers "have heard about [the Devil May Cry crossover] several times via [their] insiders". To see this content please enable targeting cookies. As for the details? Well, that's all still very much up for speculation. There's no doubting that Devil May Cry boasts several iconic outfits and weapons, though, so there's plenty to pick from.ICYMI, Fortnite Festival, the concert-themed rhythm-action portion of Epic Games' free-to-play jack-of-all-trades juggernaut, is getting local co-op support next month - conjuring nostalgic memories of countless evenings spent twanging away in Rock Band with pals.As Matt reminded us yesterday, Fortnite Festival is the work of Rock Band developer Harmonix - which Epic Games acquired back in 2021 - and is extremely reminiscent of the studio's beloved earlier titles, right down to its support for guitar-shaped plastic peripherals.

  • Nvidias AI empire: A look at its top startup investments
    techcrunch.com
No company has capitalized on the AI revolution more dramatically than Nvidia. Its revenue, profitability, and cash reserves have skyrocketed since the introduction of ChatGPT a little over two years ago and the many competitive generative AI services that have launched since. And its stock price soared more than eightfold.During that period, the worlds leading high-performance GPU maker has used its ballooning fortunes to significantly increase investments in all sorts of startups but particularly in AI startups. The chip giant ramped up its venture capital activity in 2024, participating in 49 funding rounds for AI companies, a sharp increase from 34 in 2023, according to PitchBook data. Its a dramatic surge in investment compared to the previous four years combined, during which Nvidia funded only 38 AI deals. Note that these investments exclude those made by its formal corporate VC fund, NVentures, which also significantly ramped up its investing in the last two years. (PitchBook says NVentures engaged in 24 deals in 2024, compared to just 2 in 2022.)Nvidia has stated that the goal of its corporate investing is to expand the AI ecosystem by backing startups it considers to be game changers and market makers.Of course, Nvidia is not the only large tech corporation writing checks to AI startups. But over the last two years, it was the most active. Compared to Nvidias 83 deals in two years (2023 and 2024), Alphabet participated in 73, while Microsoft has done 40 rounds, PitchBook data shows.Below is a list of startups that raised rounds exceeding $100 million over the past two years where Nvidia is a named participant, organized from the highest amount to lowest raised in the round. The billion-dollar-round clubOpenAI: Nvidia backed the ChatGPT maker for the first time in October, reportedly writing a $100 million check toward a colossal $6.6 billion round that valued the company at $157 billion. The chipmakers investment was dwarfed by OpenAIs other backers, notably Thrive, which according to the New York Times invested $1.3 billion.xAI: Nvidia participated in the $6 billion round of Elon Musks xAI. The deal revealed that not all of OpenAIs investors followed its request to refrain from backing any of its direct competitors. After investing in the ChatGPT maker in October, Nvidia joined xAIs cap table a few months later.Inflection: One of Nvidias first significant AI investments also had one of the most unusual outcomes. In June 2023, Nvidia was one of several lead investors in Inflections $1.3 billion round, a company founded by Mustafa Suleyman, who earlier founded DeepMind. Less than a year later, Microsoft hired Inflection AIs founders, paying $620 million for a non-exclusive technology license, leaving the company with a significantly diminished workforce and a less defined future.Wayve: In May, Nvidia participated in a $1.05 billion round for the U.K.-based startup, which is developing a self-learning system for autonomous driving. The company is testing its vehicles in the U.K. and the San Francisco Bay Area.Safe Superintelligence: In September, Nvidia was a backer in the new startup founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. The $1 billion round reportedly valued the new 10-person AI lab at $5 billion.Scale AI: In May 2024, Nvidia joined Accel and other tech giants Amazon and Meta to invest $1 billion in Scale AI, which provides data-labeling services to companies for training AI models. The round valued the San Francisco-based company at nearly $14 billion. The many-hundreds-of-millions-of-dollars clubCrusoe: A startup building data centers reportedly to be leased to Oracle, Microsoft, and OpenAI raised $686 million in late November, according to an SEC filing. The investment was led by Founders Fund, and the long list of other investors included Nvidia.Figure AI: In February, a $675 million Series B from Nvidia, OpenAI Startup Fund, Microsoft, and others. The round valued the company at $2.6 billion.Mistral AI: Nvidia invested in Mistral for the second time when the French-based large language model developer raised a $640 million Series B at a $6 billion valuation in June.Cohere: In June, Nvidia invested in Coheres $500 million round, a large language model provider serving enterprises. The chipmaker first backed the Toronto-based startup a year prior.Perplexity: Nvidia first invested in Perplexity in November of 2023 and has participated in every subsequent round of the AI search engine startup, including the $500 million round in December, which values the company at $9 billion, according to PitchBook data.Poolside: In October, the$500 million led by Bain Capital Ventures. Nvidia participated in the round, which valued the AI startup at $3 billion.CoreWeave: Nvidia invested in the AI cloud computing provider in April 2023, when CoreWeave raised $221 million in funding. Since then, CoreWeaves valuation has jumped from about $2 billion to $19 billion, and the company reportedly has its sights on a $35 billion IPO this year. CoreWeave allows its customers to rent Nvidia GPUs on an hourly basis.Sakana AI: In September, Nvidia invested inSeries A round of about $214 million at a valuation of $1.5 billion.Imbue: The AI research lab that$200 million round in September 2023 from investors, including Nvidia, Astera Institute, and former Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt.Waabi: In June, the autonomous trucking startup raised a $200 million Series B round co-led by existing investors Uber and Khosla Ventures. Other investors included Nvidia, Volvo Group Venture Capital, and Porsche Automobil Holding SE.Deals of over a $100 millionAyar Labs: In December, Nvidia invested in the $155 million round of Ayar Labs, aKore.ai:$150 million in December of 2023. In addition to Nvidia, investors participating in the funding included FTV Capital, Vistara Growth, and Sweetwater Private Equity.Weka: In May, Nvidia invested in a $140 million round for AI-native data management platform Weka.Runway: In June of 2023, Runway, a startup building generative AI tools for multimedia content creators, raised a $141 million Series C extension from investors, including Nvidia, Google, and Salesforce.Bright Machines: In June 2024, Nvidia participated in a $126 million Series C of Bright Machines, a smart robotics and AI-driven software startup.Vast Data: The startup that provides storage solutions for AI and data analytics raised a $118 million Series E at a $9.3 billion valuation in December of 2023.Enfabrica: In September 2023, Nvidia invested in networking chips designer Enfabricas $125 million Series B. Although the startup raised another $115 million in November, Nvidia didnt participate in the round.

  • Marvel Rivals Season 1 Playercount Spikes 34% For A Record High
    www.forbes.com
Marvel RivalsNetEaseGiven the hype surrounding the game, it seemed somewhat likely that Marvel Rivals would beat its launch concurrent playercount. Now, we know just how much its beaten that old metric. On Steam, where the majority of Marvel Rivals gamers are, season 1s launch day brought in a record high of 644,269 players. Thats up from the launch record of 480,990 players, which makes this around a 34% increase. Its possible that this is going to be as high as it goes for the season, but at times we see weekend spikes on Saturday on Sunday nights, so well see. These numbers briefly made Marvel Rivals the most-played game on Steam when CS2 was on its off-hours. Rivals has remained a Top 10 game on Steam since launch, often in the top 5, where it current sits at the time of this writing (a huge chunk of players are in China, which can make its peak hours different than some).Marvel RivalsSteamdbRivals is performing exceptionally well on console as well. Without specific figures, we can see that Rivals is the #4 game on PlayStation, behind only list staples 2K25, Fortnite and Call of Duty, and ahead of College Football 25, Madden 25, FC 25, GTA 5 and Roblox. Thats extremely impressive. Xboxs charts lag pretty far behind so we dont have season 1 launch data yet. That said, Marvel Rivals was still the seventh most-played game on the platform as of the last chart update, and no doubt it will rise from there once more data from season 1 kicks in.PS top 10SonyMORE FOR YOURivals is also performing great on Twitch with loads of popular shooter streamers heading over there for ranked play. Its currently behind only League of Legends, and at times, has been above it.NetEase was smart in that they set up a double-sized season in order to keep momentum going and wow everyone with just how much was being added. Thats four heroes (the entire Fantastic Four), three maps and a $10 battle pass with ten full skins to unlock.Yes, we are definitely still in the honeymoon period, and while Rivals is being called an Overwatch killer, we have to remember thats a nine year-old game. That said, breaking into the multiplayer PvP shooter space has been close to impossible the last few years, and Marvel Rivals is effectively the only game in this genre Ive seen perform this well this quickly. Its a Valorant or Apex situation, which is what I might compare it to. Or maybe even better, potentially. Well see how things go from here.Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

  • Californias New AI-Powered Detection Cameras Were Helpless Against The Palisades Fire
    www.forbes.com
Fire personnel respond to homes destroyed while a helicopter drops water as the Palisades Fire grows in Pacific Palisades, California on January 7, 2025.AFP via Getty ImagesArtificial intelligence, it turns out, is no match for Mother Nature. In the aftermath of Californias devastating 2022 fires, Gov. Gavin Newsom, announced a slew of new initiatives intended to mitigate future catastrophes. Were enlisting cutting-edge technology in our efforts to fight wildfires, exploring how innovations like artificial intelligence can help us identify threats quicker and deploy resources smarter, Newsom explained. The idea is simple: train an AI model to analyze a video feed to signs of emerging fires, and alert a human team that can extinguish the blaze before it becomes a disaster. But as the Palisades fire has shown, its not quite that easy, especially when weather conditions are as extreme as they were earlier in the week. The Palisades Fire was aided and abetted by Santa Ana winds which topped 100 mph spreading embers across brush, trees, and ultimately thousands of homes in the area. The problem is that under conditions like this, you may have as little as 60 seconds from when the fire ignites to essentially when its not controllable, Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, told Forbes.Since the summer of 2023, Cal Fire, the states fire prevention and response agency, has relied on a vast statewide network of over 1,100 publicly available video cameras, known as ALERTCalifornia, to power its AI system, which was created and is maintained by the University of California, San Diego. Over the past year, there have been at least 1,200 instances across the state where the AI tool not only detected a fire, but was faster than traditional 911 reporting during 30% of those incidents. (Data for 2024 has not yet been released.)All fires start out as small fires, but when its pushed by 60-100 mile per hour winds, and the fuel switches from grass and brush to houses, filled with petroleum products, thats just untenable. Its hard, if not impossible, to understand whether this AI has been useful specifically in preventing the spread of otherwise destructive fires. Its really difficult to quantify the fires that didnt happen, David Acua, a Cal Fire spokesperson, told Forbes. But I can tell you that the data from ALERTCalifornia has been incredibly helpful, we have used it in fire behavior training."Experts say that while early detection is helpful generally, this weeks Palisades Fire in western Los Angeles fueled by unusually high winds and extremely dry conditions grew too big too fast before the AI-enabled cameras could make a meaningful difference. All fires start out as small fires, but when its pushed by 60-100 mile per hour winds, and the fuel switches from grass and brush to houses, filled with petroleum products, thats just untenable, Acua added.UC San Diegos ALERTCalifornia camera network captured this image of the Palisades Fire on January 7.ALERTCalifornia | UC San DiegoThe Palisades Fire is being called the most destructive fire in the history of Los Angeles County and Wall Street analysts predict it will likely result in damages of tens of billions of dollars. As of Friday morning, Cal Fire was reporting that this blaze had burned over 20,000 acres. More than 9,000 homes and other structures have been damaged or destroyed, and over 150,000 people are under evacuation orders throughout the Los Angeles metropolitan area.Josh Wilkins, who worked as a firefighter for the San Bernardino County Fire Department for nearly 30 years, and now serves as an advisor to a venture-backed firetech startup, BurnBot, worked with early iterations of this system. He told Forbes that the fire detection AI is now much better than it used to be, but that its not enough.[The AI cameras are a] tool that we can use, but theres so much other stuff we have to do to wipe out wildfire, he said. Theres no way to wipe out the wind. Youre never going to change the Santa Ana [winds]. Were never going to change that. Theres nothing a fire truck or anybody can do.Cal Fire estimates that both the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire in the Pasadena area, in another part of the region, are already in the top five of the states most destructive in recorded history. California alone spends over $3 billion a year fighting fires, while at the federal level, billions of dollars are spent annually on wildland firefighting nationwide.Multiple startups and even a fire-focused venture capital firm, Convective Capital, have sprung up in recent years, to support new fire prevention and mitigation technology. In November, a new trade group called the Association of FireTech Innovation was established by the leaders of Convective Capital, and a nonprofit called Megafire Action. The states AI wildfire detection system is not without its recent successes, however. The Orange County Fire Authority, a county fire agency to the south of Los Angeles County, just announced that in December, it had used this AI system to detect and suppress a December incident in a remote area known as Black Star Canyon, east of the city of Orange.Armed with this early detection, OCFA dispatchers launched a wildland fire response, and our firefighters contained the blaze to less than a quarter acre meeting OCFAs goal of keeping 95% of vegetation fires to 10 acres or less, the agency wrote on January 3. No homes or structures were damaged, no injuries occurred, and no evacuations were necessary.MORE FROM FORBES
