• Researchers from Fudan University and Shanghai AI Lab Introduces DOLPHIN: A Closed-Loop Framework for Automating Scientific Research with Iterative Feedback
    www.marktechpost.com
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing how discoveries are made. AI is creating a new scientific paradigm with the acceleration of processes like data analysis, computation, and idea generation. Researchers want to create a system that eventually learns to bypass humans completely by completing the research cycle without human involvement. Such developments could raise productivity and bring people closer to tough challenges. The process of hypothesis generation, execution of experiments, and data validation often proves inefficient as scientific research involves human elements. Innovative solutions are hindered from evolutionary progress since ideas cannot be perfected with iterative feedback mechanisms during experimentation. The importance of such an aspect cannot be overstated as it contributes towards quicker and more accurate findings in scientific studies.Several research environments have been developed to automate the research process partially. Tools such as GPT-researcher and AI-Scientist can break tasks into simpler subtasks, help generate ideas, and perform some form of computation. An overall integrated framework, however, does not exist, including experimental feedback within the research cycle. Moreover, most tools today rely on small datasets or pre-defined workflows, limiting their ability to execute open-ended research tasks.Fudan University and the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory have developed DOLPHIN, a closed-loop auto-research framework covering the entire scientific research process. The system generates ideas, executes experiments, and incorporates feedback to refine subsequent iterations. DOLPHIN ensures higher efficiency and accuracy by ranking task-specific literature and employing advanced debugging processes. This comprehensive approach distinguishes it from other tools and positions it as a pioneering system for autonomous research. The methodology of DOLPHIN is divided into three interconnected stages. First, the system retrieves and ranks relevant research papers on a topic. The papers are ranked based on relevance to the task and topic attributes, thus filtering out the most applicable references. Using the selected references, DOLPHIN generates novel and independent research ideas. The generated ideas are refined by using a sentence-transformer model, calculating cosine similarity, and removing redundancy.Once ideas are finalized, DOLPHIN transitions to experimental verification. It automatically generates and debugs code using an exception-traceback-guided process. This involves analyzing error messages and their related code structure to make corrections efficiently. Experiments proceed iteratively, with results categorized as improvements, maintenance, or declines. Successful outcomes are incorporated into future cycles, enhancing idea generation quality over time.DOLPHIN was tested on three benchmark tasks: image classification using CIFAR-100, 3D point classification with ModelNet40, and sentiment classification using SST-2. In image classification, DOLPHIN improved baseline models like WideResNet by up to 0.8%, achieving a top-1 accuracy of 82.0%. For 3D point classification, the system outperformed human-designed methods such as PointNet, achieving an overall accuracy of 93.9%a 2.9% improvement over baseline models. In sentiment classification, DOLPHIN improved accuracy by 1.5% to close the gap between BERT-base and BERT-large performance. These results show that DOLPHIN can produce ideas on par with state-of-the-art methods, including its performance on diverse datasets and tasks. An interesting feature of DOLPHIN is that it improves efficiency across research iterations. At iteration one, it produced 20 ideas, of which 19 were judged novel, at an average cost per idea of $0.184. DOLPHINs closed-loop system improved processing through the third iteration to enhance idea quality and experimental execution rates. The success rate of debugging went from 33.3% to 50.0% after structured feedback was incorporated on earlier errors. This iterative improvement underscores the robustness of DOLPHINs design in automating and optimizing the research process.DOLPHIN represents a significant leap forward in AI-driven research by addressing key inefficiencies in traditional scientific workflows. Its ability to integrate literature review, idea generation, experimentation, and feedback into a seamless cycle demonstrates its potential for advancing scientific discovery. The framework improves efficiency and achieves results comparable to or exceeding those of human-designed systems. This positions DOLPHIN as a promising tool for addressing complex scientific challenges and fostering innovation in various domains.Check out the Paper and Project Page. • These three improvements could turn M4 MacBook Air into my dream laptop
    9to5mac.com
While the MacBook Pro is the place to go for the latest and greatest tech, Ive always been drawn to the MacBook Air for one key reason: portability. Theres just something really nice about the thinness and lightness of the MacBook Air, one that makes me willing to compromise on miniLED, ProMotion, additional ports, and so on. The MacBook Air isnt a perfect computer by any means, but there are some simple upgrades that Id like to see Apple make with the M4 MacBook Air this year. Any of these upgrades would make it a much better package in my book.600 nit displayApples recently been bumping the standard brightness on a bunch of their newer displays. M4 MacBook Pros got a bump to 1000 nits of standard brightness (vs 600 nits on M3 and 500 nits on M2), and the new M2 iPad Air also got a bump from 500 nits to 600 nits, at least on the 13-inch variant. So, reasonably speaking, Apple could bump the next generation MacBook Air from 500 nits to 600 nits if they wanted to. Itd be in line with some of its other device upgrades, and itd provide a solid usability upgrade to MacBook Air buyers. Itd be quite a compelling upgrade to a number of users, since the M4 model is expected to just be a spec bump.Improved thermalsApple has also been improving thermals across the board in devices that rely on passive cooling, most notably the iPhone 16 Pro and M4 iPad Pro. Both of these devices boasted improved thermals, whether that be graphite sheets, copper heatsinks, or an improved internal design.A number of people have complained about thermals in the MacBook Air, which has been passively cooled ever since the Mac transitioned to Apple Silicon. Im not here to say whether or not MacBook Air thermals are good enough, but I do notice my machine getting a little toasty under moderate workflows. Apple could definitely improve the thermals in the next MacBook Air, and Im sure itd make a lot of people happy. Some users have even modified their MacBook Airs to extend peak performance before thermal throttling. While this is a safe and reversible mod, it most definitely violates your warranty if you need your MacBook serviced. Center Stage cameraWhile this upgrade is likely a given, since the M4 iMac and M4 MacBook Pro already have it Id also really like to see Center Stage on the next MacBook Air. It makes for some really cool features, and better webcams are something that everyone can appreciate. Center Stage makes FaceTime more fun, and features like Desk View are decently useful.Wrap upThese three upgrades would make MacBook Air a far more compelling package, at least to me. MacBook Pro (especially the 16 model) is quite thick and heavy, and I really value having a nice thin-and-light laptop that I can just easily throw in a bag and not worry about. Thats ultimately why I stopped using a MacBook Pro.The thing that annoys me most about the MacBook air is only having thunderbolt ports on one side. I dont actually need more than 2 ports, Id just like one on each side. View all commentsEven if Apple made none of these changes, Id still far prefer MacBook Air but this is my wishlist. I currently use an M2 13-inch MacBook Air, and would like to take the jump up to a 15-inch. However, Apple will need to do more than a chip upgrade to convince me.Itd be easy to ask for things like a 120Hz display, or even OLED like the new iPad Pro. However, this is also Apples cheapest laptop, so I prefer to be a bit more moderate with my suggestions. My favorite Mac accessories on Amazon:Follow Michael:X/Twitter,Bluesky,InstagramAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. While trying to find ones that are compatible with your Apple HomeKit and Siri you may have run into a few snags, but we've found the best options that do. Update your security with these top choices. Our top pick, the Eufy Security Indoor Cam E220, offers Apple HomeKit connectivity immediately after updating, as well as a 2K resolution and a video package that doesn't require cloud video storage. With its reasonable under-$60 price and extra features like pan/tilt and object recognition, we haven't found a better Apple-compatible security camera for your home.Since Apple support can vary from device to device or even change over time, we've also included several other HomeKit-ready security cameras from other brands, including Arlo and Eve. Take a look at our full list and review our recommendations on what to look for when getting a security camera that's more than happy to work with the Apple Home app. Check back often, as we'll be keeping this list updated.Best home security cameras for Apple HomeKit and Siri Photo Gallery 1/1 Pros 2K resolution Object recognition Affordable Pan/tilt abilities Object tracking Good night vision Cons Eufy's app could use some work Pan/tilt cameras need space to work well Camera type Pan/tilt with 2K resolutionPower source WiredSmart home support Amazon Alexa, Google Home/Assistant, Apple HomeKit/Home/SiriVideo storage options Local storage with microSD card or cloud storage with subscription Eufy is one of the brands that offer Apple compatibility on some devices but not others -- fortunately, this pan/tilt cam is one of the lucky security camera models and offers an array of features that make it a quick recommendation for indoor security. In addition to the 360-degree view, the camera offers a 2K resolution, object detection for pets and people and good night vision. It can also track motion around a room when it recognizes something, so you don't have to manually follow details. We aren't the biggest fans of the Eufy app with its finicky UI, but it does help you connect to Apple HomeKit during setup to save time. It's difficult to find security cameras that can do so much and work with the Apple ecosystem, especially at a higher resolution, but Eufy managed to pull it off.Note that Eufy also hasan outdoor version of the E220, so if you need outdoor security cameras there is an option that should fit right into your smart home. It's not pan/tilt, but it does have many of the same advantages including Apple support. So, if you're looking for indoor and outdoor cameras, you should take a look at them before making a final call.

Mark Zuckerberg craves one metric more than any other: engagement, the statistic that tracks how long social media users spend scrolling, clicking, commenting, and viewing ads. More engagement, more profit. The Meta CEO will do almost anything to keep users online for an extra two minutes even, it seems, surrender his websites to a flood of fake news.On Tuesday, Zuckerberg announced that his company plans to fire its US factcheckers and weaken its ability to moderate disinformation on Facebook, Instagram and Threads. This new policy is meant to curry favor with the coming Trump administration. Its also a desperate attempt to boost engagement across all Metas social networks.Studies show that false social media posts spread up to 20 times faster than true ones, especially if the posts feature radical, outrageous content, such as government conspiracy theories, racist grievances and calls to violence. Thats 2000% times more engagement, and 2000% times the ad revenue. And the more novel a post is oftentimes, the more detached from reality the better. As factchecking attempts end, its a guarantee that Metas platforms, much like X before them, will become a wasteland of fake news and misinformation. Zuckerberg said explicitly that he was following Elon Musks example. We can already see this happening. Misinformation about the wildfires ravaging Los Angeles is spreading as fast as the blazes themselves. Meta fired its factchecking team because slapping a disclaimer on a post discourages people from interacting with it, and thats exactly the opposite of what Zuckerberg wants.Absent the moderating force of factchecking, well see more content thats hyper-partisan, vitriolic, and hostile, said Dr Cody Buntain, an assistant professor at the University of Maryland who studies social media disinformation. The people that are already potentially more extreme, theyll be more engaged in the platform. Therell be more content that caters to their interests.Extreme and misleading content is designed to inflame emotions. There would be no point to posting it otherwise. Its meant to make you angry, to bypass the logical parts of your brain and force you to react, either positively or negatively. Yet, whether that reaction involves liking the post, sharing it or even leaving a comment to correct the record, the result is the same: youve engaged, dropping a few more cents into Metas coffers. Metas algorithm does not register the conscientious objection of your angry face reaction, only the fact that you reacted, which boosts the original post.skip past newsletter promotionSign up to TechScapeFree weekly newsletterA weekly dive in to how technology is shaping our livesPrivacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. In 2016, Meta vice-president Andrew Bosworth argued in an email that inciting suicides and terrorist attacks was an acceptable price to pay for the de facto benefits of connecting users. When the email leaked in 2018, Zuckerberg said he disagreed but its clearly still the prevailing philosophy at Meta. Bosworth was promoted to chief technology officer in 2022.For the same reason, Meta continues to aggressively market its products towards children and teens, despite years of criticism. We know that excessive social media use can lead to anxiety and depression in teens. But as Facebooks user base grows older, Meta knows that its survival depends on children, who are dependent on their phones more than any other age group, polling shows.Whether a user is 12 or 62, ad revenue is ad revenue. And whether youre sharing fake news to praise it, laugh at it or rage at it, engagement is engagement. Two years ago, the end of factchecking might have forced Zuckerberg to endure another another congressional hearing. But with the second reign of Donald Trump looming, Meta finally has permission to abandon its ethics and chase the dragon of engagement wherever it leads even if it leads to the death of truth on the internet.

  • General John Sedgwick House // 1860
    buildingsofnewengland.com
The Major General John SedgwickHouse is located in Cornwall Hollow, Connecticut, and stands out as one of the finest residences in this part of the state in a rural setting. The house was built by 1860 for General John Sedgwick (1813-1864), who was born in a house standing on this site, which had been built by his grandfather, a veteran of the Revolutionary War. In 1859, the Sedgwick family homestead burned to the ground. Sedgwick, then already well established in his military career, took leave to oversee construction of its replacement. This house was built, apparently on the foundation of the old house, in 185960. The work was done by Cyrus Marsh, a local builder, in the Italianate style with decorative brackets, window mouldings, hoods, and a large columned entry portico. Major General Sedgwick was active in many campaigns, and during theAmerican Civil War, he was killed by a sharpshooter at the 1864Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, he was the Union Armys highest-ranking casualty of the war and never got to reside in his Cornwall home.

The reigning WBA lightweight champion was seemingly upset he wasnt invited to the Ring Magazine awards, where most of the top stars and legends in the sport convened to recognize the best in the business in 2024.The event was held at The Old Royal Naval College in London, and the guest list read like a whos who of the sport: Oleksandr Usyk, Canelo Alvarez, Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, Shakur Stevenson, Lennox Lewis, and dozens of others. The Ring Magazine, which is now owned by Alalshikh, posted this iconic image on their social media accounts.Davis took the same image from Matchroom Boxings Instagram account and added a caption profanely slamming Alalshikh and everyone in attendance. Why they didnt invite everybody, Davis asked in his post. I sell where Im from B####, AMERICA.They be going over there getting their ass kicked fighting in front of a total of 19 people..but becuz they rich its cool.Quite honestly, this approach doesnt look good on Davis. I fully support him sticking to his guns. If he elects not to head over to Saudi Arabia to fight, thats his prerogative. However, slamming other fighters as they celebrate and endure the challenges of networking and making business moves looks more like jealousy than genuine concern for the state of the sport. Davis is scheduled to face Lamont Roach Jr. at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on March 1.Roach is a competitor and a good athlete, but few give him a chance against Davis. Because of the way the fight looks on paper, Davis has been criticized for his choice of opposition. That criticism, along with other struggles, has seemingly influenced Davis to be in a surly and unpredictable mood over the past two months. Davis seemed frustrated and easily triggered at a recent press event where he also mentioned he planned to retire at the end of 2025.WASHINGTON, DC - DECEMBER 05: Gervonta Davis reacts during a press conference with Lamont Roach Jr. ... In any case, hes still one of the best lightweights of his era, and with a few more quality wins added to his resume, he could still reach all-time great status, whether in or outside of Saudi Arabia.

  • A stick-figure drawing in a North Korean soldier's diary showed how Pyongyang's troops wanted to use each other as drone 'bait'
    www.businessinsider.com
Ukraine has been releasing excerpts of what its forces say is a North Korean soldier's diary. They include a stick-figure sketch of using a comrade as "bait" to shoot down a drone.Other entries include musings on class struggles and a confession for stealing undisclosed Russian items.Excerpts from a North Korean soldier's diary released by Ukraine show a glimpse at how Pyongyang's troops in Russia believed they could defend against drones and artillery strikes.Ukraine's special forces have been releasing excerpts of the diary since Christmas week, saying the entries were written by a now-deceased North Korean private named Gyeong Hong Jong. The latest of these, published on Thursday, appeared to feature the young soldier confessing that he was stealing items from his Russian allies to sell. He did not specify what the stolen goods were but wrote that he had been caught."While working in the barracks, I thought that no one was watching me and put the Russians' things in my pocket," the diary excerpt said, per Ukraine's special forces."I will no longer trade in other people's things. I will heroically advance in the forefront and destroy the enemy," the soldier added.Other entries released by Ukraine included praises of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and musings on class struggle."Longing for my homeland, having left the warm embrace of my dear father and mother here on Russian land. I celebrate the birthday of my closest comrade Song Ji Myong," another entry read, per a translation by The Wall Street Journal. One of the earliest entries, published by Ukraine on December 26, featured a stick-figure drawing of what the soldier described as "How to eliminate a drone."The simple illustration showed a figure standing upright on open ground while another two stick figures fired at a quadcopter drone."If a UAV is spotted, gather in groups of three," the diary read, per The Journal's translation. "One person must act as bait to lure the drone while the other two take aim and neutralize it with precision shooting. The bait must maintain a distance of seven meters from the drone. The other two should prepare to shoot down the drone from a distance of 10 to 12 meters. When the bait stands still, the drone will stop and it can be shot down."Ukraine's special forces said the North Korean soldier also wrote of how to avoid artillery strikes. An excerpt of his diary said that Pyongyang's troops were supposed to "disperse in small groups" if fired upon by artillery. The excerpt also said he could hide in the location of "the previous hit" because he believed artillery doesn't repeatedly strike the exact same spot.Business Insider couldn't independently verify the authenticity of the diary entries. Ukraine posted photos of what it said were the soldier's corpse and passport. The Journal also cited a former North Korean soldier and a former South Korean major general who said the choice of words in the diary aligned with the ideology and vernacular of North Korea's troops. The soldier's diary could give insight into how North Korean forces are adapting battlefield doctrine for combat in Russia. The West worries that Pyongyang's involvement will allow its forces to glean valuable lessons from battling Ukraine, especially as they face off against American and European equipment and encounter drone warfare.Dorothy Camille Shea, the deputy US ambassador to the UN, said on Wednesday that Pyongyang "is significantly benefiting from receiving Russian military equipment, technology, and experience, rendering it more capable of waging war against its neighbors."Western and South Korean intelligence says that 12,000 North Korean troops are stationed and fighting in Kursk, a Russian border region that Ukraine attacked in the summer of 2024.Moscow hasn't addressed the presence of Pyongyang's troops on its soil, but Ukraine has increasingly been trying to cast a spotlight on North Korea's direct involvement in the war. Most recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy published images of who he said were two captured North Korean soldiers. He did not provide evidence that they were North Korean, though Seoul's intelligence service backed up his claim."This was not an easy task: Russian forces and other North Korean military personnel usually execute their wounded to erase any evidence of North Korea's involvement in the war against Ukraine," Zelenskyy wrote. He has said that around 3,000 North Korean soldiers were wounded or killed.
