• Everything to know about Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft's email and productivity platform that replaced MSN and Hotmail
    www.businessinsider.com
Microsoft Outlook is an email platform with productivity features like calendar and file-sharing.Microsoft discontinued its old email platforms, MSN and Hotmail, and folded them into Outlook.Outlook is free for personal accounts, but paid subscriptions offer greater storage and security. In case you hadn't noticed, Microsoft has a released a lot of software over the past five decades. From its groundbreaking Windows operating system to its search engine Bing to stalwart programs like Word and Excel, now a part of the subscription-based Microsoft 365 suite, the company is a juggernaut of the software industry. And when a company has released a plethora of programs, it's no surprise that the company has cancelled, merged, or rebranded many programs, too. What is Microsoft Outlook?Microsoft Outlook is, first and foremost, an email platform, but it goes well beyond just sending and receiving electronic mail. It also features a calendar, an easy way to store and manage contact information, file sharing of data saved in the cloud, and schedule and task tracking.Microsoft Outlook is free to use for personal email and calendars, but there are some limitations. For example, a free Outlook account can only store up to 15 GB of mail, and that cap can be surprisingly easy to reach. Also, advanced security features are only available with a paid subscription.Using Outlook is a great way to streamline your work and home life, keeping yourself up-to-date and aware of appointments, assignments, travel, deadlines, and more. You can set it up such that flight or hotel reservations are automatically added to your calendar, so that it will remind you of scheduled events, and you can set it to flag important messages for you and to screen out the unimportant, too. What happened to Hotmail and MSN?Both Hotmail and MSN, also known as MSN Messenger, have been discontinued for a number of years, folded into other products. Chat messaging platform MSN was first released in 1999 and was rebranded as Windows Live Messenger in 2005.Though it was used by hundreds of millions of people each month, following the acquisition of Skype in 2011, Microsoft found its own messaging platform redundant. The company shut the messenger service once known as MSN down for good in 2013. MSN email addresses still work, but they are managed via OutlookInterestingly enough, the year 2013 also tolled the death knell for Hotmail. The mail platform was founded in 1996 and acquired by Microsoft the following year, and would enjoy nearly 17-year run until it was folded into Microsoft Outlook. You can still get an email address using @hotmail.com, but you'll need to sign up for it via Microsoft Outlook. Is Microsoft discontinuing Outlook? There are no plans for Microsoft to discontinue its Outlook platform. In fact, the company announced that as of the end of 2024, its Mail and Calendar applications would no longer be supported and that their functions would be rolled into Outlook, so Microsoft is putting even more of the proverbial eggs in the Outlook basket.Outlook vs. GmailFrom contact management to calendar services to, of course, email, Microsoft Outlook and the Google Workspace, which includes Gmail, Google Meet, Google Drive, and Google Docs, have a lot of crossovers.Google's professional suite is great for collaborative teams, offering more storage space and easy ways to connect, work on shared documents, and to swap files. Alternatively, people wanting advanced email features and numerous optional automations might prefer Outlook. Both are superb workflow suites; it's truly a personal call.

  • CES 2025: Do You Really Need a New HDMI 2.2 Cable?
    lifehacker.com
The HDMI Forum is at it again. At CES 2025, the organization announced a brand new HDMI standard: HDMI 2.2. This new specification is a huge leap from HDMI 2.1, with some impressive on-paper specs. But do you really need to plan on upgrading your HDMI setup? Spoiler: definitely not. What's new with HDMI 2.2HDMI 2.1, which the HDMI Forum released seven years ago, has a bandwidth of 48Gbps, and supports outputs of 4K at 120Hz and 10K at 60Hz. This latest HDMI standard doubles that bandwidth to 96Gbps, and supports 4K at 480Hz, 8K at 240Hz, and 10K at 120Hz (as seen in an official photo below). Those higher resolutions and refresh rates are especially useful for cutting-edge augmented reality, mixed reality, spatial reality, and light field displays, but probably won't be necesarry on most consumer products as of yet. HDMI 2.2 also supports Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), which can help improve audio and video synchronization with setups that involve a multitude of connected devices. Credit: HDMI Forum The new HDMI 2.2 cables will come with Ultra96 badging (because HDMI cables weren't confusing enough yet). With this update, the physical connector still stays the same shape and size: users will be able to confirm that they are indeed using the high throughput cable using a QR code on the Ultra96 branded cables.Do you need HDMI 2.2?All this considered, there is really no need for you to rush to get an HDMI 2.2 cable. The spec won't be available to manufacturers until mid-2025, and even then, we might not see devices that support HDMI 2.2 connections until next year. Sure, HDMI 2.2 is backwards compatible with HDMI 2.1, so you can use these cables with your existing devices, but unless you have a 10K TV (you probably don't), you might as well stick to the cables you already use.So no, you don't need to rush out to buy an HDMI 2.2 cable when they start shipping later this year. Knowing how these things go, we are looking at a couple of years of waiting before all that extra bandwidth turns into something useful.

  • CES 2025: HP Will Use AI to Handle Your Game Settings For You
    lifehacker.com
Whenever I log into a game, the first thing I do is hop into its settings and toy around with my options to try to strike a good balance between performance and graphics. Its not exactly the most exciting first impression for a new title, but it can make my actual time spent playing a lot more seamless. Now, HP wants to automate that first hurdle away, so I can jump right into gameplay instead.Omen AI beta optimizes your settings for youAs part of its CES 2025 announcements, the company announced its "Omen AI Beta," coming to the HP Omen Gaming Hub this week. According to HP, this AI will use machine learning to provide customized adjustments to operating system settings, hardware settings, and in-game settings in just one click. Thats a lot to balance all at once, but the idea is that HP will scan your system to find out how to get max performance in your games, taking your individual setup into account, then make the needed changes for you.Like other AI, it'll need training data to pull that off. According to a spokesperson, Omen AI will use hardware specs, game configurations, and performance metrics from "millions of gaming systems" to come up with its optimizations, which it'll then apply across your game and certain compatible parts of your wider system. In order to avoid conflicts with other companies' products, its operating system changes will be limited to adjusting the "booster" settings already present in the company's gaming software, while hardware setting changes will initially only work with Omen PCs. In other words, your optimizations might be a little less effective if you don't have the right computer, but you also won't need to worry about the program breaking hardware it's not familiar with. (If you do encounter issues, there's an undo button to change back to your setting from before you enabled the AI.) Credit: HP Even with those limitations, the feature is only set to work with Counterstrike 2 at launch, so expect a measured rollout. Still, promotional material does show the tool working in Valorant as well, so hopefully HP wont abandon it after just a proof of concept.Thats really whatll make or break something like this. If it only works on a few titles, itll be great for headlines, but gamers will quickly forget about it. Integrations with other PC makers and companies like Nvidia are also possible down the line, I'm told, which could help widen the tool's user base. A wider user base also means more data to help train on, which does raise the issue of privacy. According to HP, Omen AI doesn't use any personally identifiable information to train its AI models, and users can manage their data collection consent options from within the Omen Gaming Hub software. Still, even with the promise that data is anonymous and aggregated, it's worth double checking your privacy settings if you have HP's Omen Gaming Hub installed, even if you don't plan on using AI. Credit: HP It's interesting seeing something like this come first from a computer manufacturer rather than Microsoft or Nvidia, although the tool will be open to anyone with Omen Gaming Hub installed, whether or not they have an HP PC. Both in and out-of-game, it looks like youll be able to use Omen AI to access a quick toggle that will tell you your current fps as well as what fps you can expect to get upon enabling the tool. Even if these are just mock-ups for now, they do show a commitment to ease of use. That said, maybe a bit of fine control would be helpful herewhat if Im OK with the program adjusting my in-game settings but would rather have my operating system and hardware left alone? How well Omen AI will work in reality depends on how the beta plays out and continued support. I'm rooting for it: Its also a good example of the type of AI I actually like, since it's more about eliminating tedium than replacing human creativity.New mice from HPHP also announced the HyperX Pulsefire Saga and Saga Pro mice at this year's CES, which both look pretty standard on the surface, with 8K polling, six programmable buttons, and support for up to 26,000 DPI. There are some premium features, like magnetic weights, but what really sets them apart is their 3D-printed cases. Youll get eight case parts in the box, which is enough for a full mouse, but youre also free to swap out and customize options at your leisure, by downloading new open-source case parts from HPs Printables account. The HyperX Pulsefire Saga and Saga Pro mice will both be available in March. The former costs $80, while the latter hits $120, thanks to its added wireless functionality.
