• The Canopy Residence, A Modern Home Nestled Above the Trees
    www.home-designing.com
Perched just above the treetops is the Canopy Residence by Daniel Annenkov. This villa is all about light, height, and stillness. With floor-to-ceiling glass and natural wood framing, the home feels weightless but grounded. Every space opens to sky and forest, blurring the boundary between inside and out.The Canopy Residence stands tall and serene. It blends natural beauty with bold architecture. Its expansive glass facade reflects the shifting skies, while slender timber columns rise like tree trunks. A concrete base anchors the home into the slope, giving it both stability and a sense of elegance. From the wraparound deck, panoramic lake views stretch endlessly. Every angle feels open, airy, and deeply connected to the surrounding landscape. The living space in the Canopy Residence celebrates openness. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls frame sweeping views of the lake. Plush, oversized sofas invite you to sink in, while warm wood tones create a relaxed atmosphere. A bold, low-profile coffee table anchors the space, perfect for gathering around. Simultaneously, the high ceilings and minimalist decor keep the room airy. The kitchen features a matte black island anchoring the space. This is paired with sculpted wooden stools. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the room with sunlight, offering serene views of the greenery outside. Light wood cabinetry and integrated appliances keep the look seamless, while the open layout flows effortlessly to the outdoors. So, its great for both cooking and entertaining! The floor-to-ceiling windows in the dining space flood the wooden table with daylight, while offering sweeping views of the outdoors. Sleek black chairs with woven seats line both sides, bringing a touch of craftsmanship. A textured wall artwork and modern sideboard add depth and interest. The corridor takes a moodier turn. Narrow and dimly lit, it draws you in with its dramatic shadows. Mounted antlers and horns add a lodge-like feel. (This creates a striking contrast to the open, sunlit spaces nearby!).Wood-paneled walls wrap the bedroom in natural texture. A soft, neutral bedspread rests against a padded headboard. This, in turn, is framed by built-in shelving for an integrated look. Sleek pendant reading lights add a modern touch. Simultaneously, the simple furnishings, like the dark wood nightstands and storage bench, keep the focus on comfort.

Download the scene fileBrowse the assetsWere proud to present Poly Havens latest asset collection: A Verdant Trail.Browse the assetsThe goal of this project was to explore the idea of traveling to different biomes and capturing scans over a few days to create a cohesive asset pack that can be used to recreate similar environments.South Africa has an absurd number of biomes within relatively easy reach, so our idea was to see what would be involved in creating an asset pack for each of them one dayMicro-biomes of South Africa, and the location where most of our scans were capturedhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_vegetation_types_of_South_AfricaWe first started this project back in April of 2023, slowly gathering references, scouting locations, and planning the scope of the final collection.Reference photo of a boulder we might have scannedOur working title for the project was Little Falls, which is the name of the suburb where we gathered most of our data. We had some grand ideas of rivers and waterfalls as well, which were soon decided to be too much of a time investment for something we cant publish as an asset on Poly Haven. The small riverbed makes for quite a tranquil sceneThis biome, technically a grassland, is extremely common in the highveld of South Africa. Our initial reason for choosing it as our first biome project was that it was very accessible to us. It covers most of our province and were all very familiar with it.Greg is scouting for scannable rocks amongst the grassy outcropOur primary reference was a small rarely-used public park, home to the waterfalls that the suburb is named from. The path is generally overgrown and runs treacherously alongside the polluted river.Rico is trying not to fall off the narrow path into the riverbank belowMoments before Dario gets his shoe stuck in the mudJandre patiently waits for the rest of the team to catch upThere were plenty of rock faces to scan, though much of it was covered in wild grasses and proved a bit challenging to process. We later also visited other nearby parks and reserves to scan more surfaces that were a bit less overgrown. The cliffside would be great to scan, were it not for all the dense foliage obscuring itThere was a wide variety of vegetation and rock types densely packed in this small area, we had to be careful to create a mockup of the final scene and a wishlist of the assets we would really need before going and capturing everything. We wanted to avoid being too overwhelmed for our first biome project. The riverbank is home to a variety of washed-up trash and debris, brought by heavy rains in the summer monthsOverall the project was a great success! There is always more to scan, but we learned a lot about what is required for scanning things in the wild, such that we were able to travel to Namaqualand in September to capture that biome as well. Weve started processing those scans too now, but thats a story for another blog post Until next time, thanks for your continued support on Patreon, and we look forward to seeing what environments you make with our new assets!Rico, Dario & Jandre, on our first location scout.Browse the assets

  • New Apple Watch 2025: Everything we know about the Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3
    www.macworld.com
MacworldPeople have high hopes for the Apple Watch in 2025 after the Apple Watch Series 10 disappointed in 2024. Despite rumors of major design changes, the Apple Watch 10 turned out to be more or less identical to every Apple Watch sold over the last few years. The display was just a tad larger, and the body was slightly thinner, but overall it was very similar to the Series 9.In 2025, it looks like Apple will deliver some long-awaited Apple Watch features. Read on to find out whats in store for Apple Watch Series 11, the Ultra 3, and the SE 3 in the fall of 2025. Heres what weve heard so far about the 2025 Apple Watch. Well run through whats expected for each Apple Watch model below.Updated August 26: Apple has announced that its Awe Dropping September iPhone event will be held on Tuesday, September 9.Apple Watch Series 11 release date: When is the next Apple Watch coming out?Launch at September iPhone event: Tuesday, September 9Pre-order from September 12On sale from September 19For years now, Apple has announced the new Apple Watch together with the new iPhone at a September event, with both products going on sale the following week. Thats the case again in 2025, with Apples Awe Dropping event landing on Tuesday, September 9. Apple has always used this event to launch new watches and we dont expect that to change this year.Pre-orders for the Apple Watch Series 11 will either be available on the same day or Friday, September 12, with general availability in stores a week later on September 19.Apple Watch Ultra 3 release date: Will there be a new Apple Watch Ultra in 2025?Launch at September iPhone event: Tuesday, September 9Pre-order from September 12On sale from September 19Surprisingly, Apple didnt update the Apple Watch Ultra in 2024, so the Apple Watch Ultra 2 has remained on sale despite the Apple Watch Series 11 having an updated chip (S9 vs S10). Will the lower spec have resulted in fewer sales for the so-called ultra watch, or will its features targeted at extreme sports enthusiasts be enough to keep stock moving? We dont know, but Apple cant have been concerned about how the older chip would be perceived, and perhaps we should take that as evidence that when it comes to the Apple Watch, the chip doesnt really matter? We expect Apple to rectify this in 2025 with the launch of the Apple Watch Ultra 3 alongside the Apple Watch Series 11. Apple Watch SE 3 release date: Will there be a new Apple Watch SE in 2025?Launch at September iPhone event: Tuesday, September 9Pre-order from September 12On sale from September 19Apple hasnt updated the Apple Watch SE since 2022, and that update was an extremely minor one, bringing a new chip and crash detection with a lower price of $249. It was initially rumored that 2024 would bring a substantial update to the budget watch with a plastic redesign, but that didnt happen. Will it happen in 2025? Possibly. However, a rumor in March 2025 claimed that the new Apple Watch SE had run into production issues and was in serious jeopardy. So Apple may stick with the current model for another year. The Apple Watch SE hasnt been updated since 2022.Henry Burrell / FoundryNew Apple Watch 2025 prices: How much will the new Apple Watch cost? Apple Watch Ultra 3: From $799/799 based on current priceApple Watch Series 11: From $399/399 based on current priceApple Watch SE 3: From $249/219 based on current priceEver since the Apple Watch Series 3, Apple has kept starting prices the same for the aluminum Apple Watch and, on that basis, we dont expect a price hike this year. This means that the Series 11 should start at $399 for the 42mm model, and the larger 46mm version will cost $429, with an extra $100 for cellular capability and higher prices for various bands. With the Series 10, Apple also offered a titanium case for $699/$699 or $749/749 depending on the size. This model includes LTE Cellular as standard. Rumors suggest Apple will keep that option around with the Series 11, likely at the same price. For the 49mm Ultra version, which also features a titanium case, pricing is $799/799, so not all that more expensive than the titanium variant of the Series 10 really. The SE 3 is likely to start at $249, as the SE 2 does, although the price may rise in the U.K. where it is currently 219. However, no discussion of future Apple product pricing is complete without mentioning U.S. tariffs, which are could have a big impact on pricing. Its simply too difficult to predict whether tariffs will increase the Apple Watchs price, but the odds are significant.New Apple Watch 2025 design: Will Apple update the design of the Series 11, Ultra, or SE?The Apple Watch Series 11 is likely to look nearly identical to the Series 10.Dominik Tomaszewski / FoundryThe newly announced watchOS 26 will itself bring a new design to the Apple Watch software in the form of a new more glass-like interface dubbed Liquid Glass that will be unified across all Apple devices. But what of the hardware? Rumors throughout 2024 told us to expect more significant changes to the Apple Watch design last year, and then the Series 10 debuted and it looked like a very slightly flattened Series 9. This year, all signs point to an Apple Watch Series 11 that is identical in appearance to the Series 10, with the possible exception of new colors, possibly sky blue to match the MacBook Air and iPhone 17.As for the Apple Watch Ultra 3, it might be slimmer. And yes, the display might be even largera report in August revealed that code in iOS 26 indicates that the Ultra 3 will have a display resolution of 422 by 514, which is an increase from the Ultra 2s 410 by 502.Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reported in September 2024 that a plastic SE redesign would arrive in 2025 alongside the Series 11. So the Apple Watch SE 3 might have a whole new look. However, in March 2025, Gurman claimed that the new Apple Watch SE had run into production issues and was in serious jeopardy. So Apple may need to stick to the aluminum design for the new SE to get the update out.New Apple Watch 2025 features: What are the new features? There have been rumors that Apple is trying to get features like blood pressure monitoring and blood sugar monitoring onto the Apple Watch, but these capabilities seem to still be a long way off in the future. What can we expect from the new Apple Watches in 2025?Health & Fitness Were not expecting any new health sensors. Apples blood glucose monitoring initiative is still years from ending up in a watch, it seems, and while there have been rumors of high blood pressure monitoring, thats apparently not quite ready to appear this year, either.A report in July 2025 found that the Apple Watch is best at measuring calorific usage, according to tests, although most smart watches, including Apples, tend to underestimate calories burned. Perhaps Apple will estimate calories burned even more accurately in future Apple Watches.watchOS 26, which is coming to recent Apple Watches (SE2, Series 6 and newer), will bring some health and fitness-related features, including a Workout Buddy that analyzes your usage data and fitness metrics to create personalized insights and pep talks and customization options that let you set up suitable playlists and podcasts to play during workouts. This Workout Buddy will add a new dimension to Apple Watch fitness routines. Choose a voice for your Workout Buddy, and it will coach you through workouts, using your personal health metrics and goals, and cheer you on with motivational messages. In our early testing of the beta we have felt that the Workout Buddy misses the mark a bit, but hopefully it will be more useful by the time the software update arrives. 5G and SatelliteIts also rumored that the Apple Watch Ultra 3 will support 5G cellular and satellite messaging, which could also come to the Series 11. Apple debuted a wireless chip in the iPhone 16e, but its not clear whether its small or efficient enough for the Apple Watch yet.Apple IntelligenceApple Intelligence and the new Siri could be one of the new features of watchOS 12 and the Apple Watch Series 11.Michael Simon/IDGAI is a key aspect of almost every new Apple product now, and rumors suggest Apple is working on bringing some AI features to the Apple Watch. The actual AI models probably wont be able to run on the watch; rather, the watch will gather data, the processing will be done on your iPhone, and then the watch will display results or notifications. The new AI-related features include Live Listen transcription and Live Translation, whereby your iPhone is used as a microphone to pick up the conversations around you that you might struggle to hear or understand, and your device then transcribes what is said and displays it on your screen. These transcriptions or translations can then be sent to your Apple Watch for you to reference in real time.Other features coming in watchOS 26 include automatic volume adjustment, so that notifications are adjusted depending on where you are there wont be a loud alarm if you are in the library, for example. And new Smart Actions that will make suggestions based on incoming texts and other elements, for example, if a friend texts to ask where you are, youll see a prompt to share your location using the Find My app. Many of the new AI features will debut as part of watchOS 26, so they will be available on all compatible Watches, but some might be kept as Series 11 exclusives in order to help differentiate the hardware.Touch ID Internal software suggests that Touch ID could be coming to future Apple Watch models, but we dont expect to see that feature until 2026. According to specific entries in developer beta code, Apple has been experimenting with some form of biometric authentication on the Apple Watch. Code for what clearly refers to the 2026 models of the Apple Watch mentions support for AppleMesa, which has long beenApples internal codename for Touch ID.New Apple Watch 2025 specs & hardwareSo, what hardware will be new? You can bet on a new S11 SiP (system in package), offering somewhat better performance.Battery lifeDont expect a big boost in battery life for the Apple Watch 11that has been a near-constant 18 hours for nearly the entire lifespan of the watch.Battery life of the Ultra and SE is also unlikely to change.microLED screenApple has been working on incorporating a microLED display on the Apple Watch for several years, according to various leaks and rumors, but its not expected to debut on the Series 11 this year. It could, however, arrive on the Apple Watch Ultra in 2025.New CPUA new CPU will be coming to the Apple Watch too, but the biggest changes are unlikely to arrive until 2026. Leaked code refers to Watch8, while the Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Series 11 are all referred to as Watch7. The new CPU for the 2026 Watch is identified as T8320, apparently. More here: Apple code suggests Touch ID could be coming to Apple Watch.Learn more in our watchOS 26 superguide.

  • Apples silicon development leader on processor design
    www.computerworld.com
Disruptive products cannot be built from legacy chips, Apple Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies Johny Srouji said when hespoke at ITF Worldin Belgium in May. He was there to receive the prestigious 2025IMEC Innovation Award and shared some of the lessons Apple has acquired since it began building its own processors with theA4 chip inside the iPhone.During his speech, he explained how the scalable architecture Apple chose for its chip development is enabling the company to transform all its hardware. And he shared a few tips for intelligent hardware design, such as to always use the best available tools and technologies during development.I always tell my team, we want to be gated by physics, nothing else, he said.iPhone and the future of computingApples processor journey really began years before Apple Silicon. But it was only when it began work on the iPhone that it committed to taking complete control of the processor development process. The iPhone was seen as a full-blown computer, he said. To support its full feature set, it required an incredible amount of performance but needed to deliver that within a constrained power. The company understood that while the easy path might be to use third-party processors, doing so made it hard to design products that stood out. Shifting to custom silicon was difficult, but it enabled the company to design in chip efficiency and gave it the chance to control our destiny.Mobile tech in a MacWhat that means in terms of actual hardware is now reflected in the power and performance advantage characteristic of Apple silicon. And its a direct result of the original design decisions made about to the iPhone decisions such as building chips optimized in such a way that the most efficient part of the performance versus power curve coincides with the maximum sustained thermal envelope of the device its going into.In other words, Apples chips are built to deliver their most efficient performance when the devices are being used for quite demanding tasks. This can scale up for short-term higher-end chores, and tick down when all you want to do is check email or pick up some more cookies and adware while browsing. That efficiency by design, in conjunction with the hardware and software Apple also designs, makes for longer battery life and higher performance per watt.It also makes for the sort of power efficiency you need to run multiple operations on the GPU, which makes Apple silicon highly suitable for on-device AI. It might seem ironic, but the design decisions made for the iPhone directly contributed to the processor choices Apple has made for its fleet of private cloud compute servers. The fundamental building blocksTransistor density is fundamental. We rely on transistors as the chips get more complex, Srouji said. As our chips are getting more complex, the transistor as the fundamental building block is getting more important than ever. The 190 million transistors crammed inside the A4 and A4X chips that powered the iPhone and iPad 15 years ago would occupy just one tiny corner of the M3 Ultra chips 183 billion transistors today. Those numbers are why, for example, GPU performance on the M3 Ultra is 17,000 times that of the A4.It is also why innovations such as support for unified memory and better performance per watt feeds into the Mac. It means the M1 MacBook Airdelivered equivalent performanceto that of an Intel MacBook Pro, with system performance scaling up withevery model after that. Progress has been so fast that Apple is expected to introduce a Mac thatuses an iPhone chip later this year. The ability to design technologies in which Apple is only constrained by physics enables better design, thanks to the integration of software, hardware, and processors. And thanks to our vertical integration any innovation here we can transfer to millions of products reaching millions of customers, Srouji said. The future remains unwrittenApple hasnt finished with chip design yet. Its likely in a decades time well see more progress, more performance, and more computational ability squeezed into Apples processors particularly as we move to whatever the successor may be to the 2nm chips the company is now expected to use. It means you can expect more transistor density moving forward, which means more performance. Can we anticipate 17,000-fold increases?I dont know. But from what Apples silicon leader is saying, the only barrier will be the laws of physics. Of course, as development gets close to the finite constraints of physics itself, well see ever more focus on small wins that lead to better efficiency. Seeking such wins, dont be too surprised to see Apples chip designers lean even more deeply into AI than they already do as they work to identify and test new solutions. Gen AI techniques have high potential to get more design work done in less time, Srouji said. You can follow me on social media! Join me onBlueSky, LinkedIn, andMastodon.

  • Designing better products with AI and sustainability
    www.technologyreview.com
On a mission to reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing components, Siemens turned its attention to the design of a robot gripper. Making up just 2%of the robot, the impact of this hand-likedevice may seem inconsequential. But, reducing its weight by 90% and the number of constituent parts by 84% can save up to 3 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per robot per year. Consider the impact of equivalent savings across every gripper on the more than 4 million industrial robots worldwidethat is quite the step change. To achieve this feat, Siemens used AI-powered generative design tools to autonomously explore possible solutions and rapidly test and optimize them for functionality and manufacturability. AI and generative AI are fundamentally reshaping how sustainability is integrated into product development, says Pina Schlombs, sustainability lead and industrial AI thought leader at Siemens. By enabling smarter design choices, real-time impact assessments, and circular design, these technologies empower businesses to create innovative products that meet both market and environmental demands.DOWNLOAD THE REPORTAs global carbon emissions reached a record high in 2024, pressure is mounting on companies to reduce their environmental footprint in alignment with the UNs Sustainable Development Goals. Consumers also increasingly value products that are better for the environment with 80% willing to spend more on sustainably produced goods, according to PWC. And regulations around the world, including the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards, the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, and the EU and UK Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism are increasingly enforcing reporting and incentivizing sustainable production.Download the full report. This content was produced by Insights, the custom content arm of MIT Technology Review.
