• Americans Are Posting 3D-Printed Gun Videos to Chinas RedNote With Surprising Success | Will Americans get banned from RedNote before the U.S. government has a chance to ban RedNote.
    gizmodo.com
By Matt Novak Published January 16, 2025 | Comments (27) | Screenshots from videos posted to RedNote showing 3D printed guns. YZY Prints / RedNote Americans have flooded the Chinese-based video app RedNote in recent days in a coordinated campaign to say fuck you to their own government as the ban on TikTok is set to take effect on Sunday. And while some cultural conflict is bound to be expected, some Americans are testing the limits of U.S.-China digital relations by posting videos about 3D-printed guns. And surprisingly, they seem to be getting away with it so far. Daily Dot was the first to report Wednesday about a social media user named YZY who decided to join RedNote specifically to teach Chinese users about 3D-printed guns. These so-called ghost guns operate in a gray area within U.S. law but are decidedly illegal in China, which has strict gun laws. Us Americans have a moral obligation to download RedNote and show the Chinese how to build unserialized ghost guns, YZY wrote on X. While YZY tweeted that hed had one video removed, it was quickly restored, and other videos have seemingly been allowed to stay up. The user told the Daily Dot that hed actually run into fewer moderation issues than on TikTok, where he didnt have an active presence. It would not surprise me if they just straight up never thought to make a policy against this, the user speculated to the Daily Dot. YZY and a few like-minded friends have planted their flag at RedNote. And while its not clear whether the company will get more or less strict about the presence of gun-related content, they seem to be operating just fine this week. A handful of users have asked YZY questions in Mandarin and English. And while the discussion has been respectful, there are some RedNote users who are clearly uncomfortable with ghost guns, as many Americans obviously are. Citizens of China can get permission to own a firearm but its nowhere near as easy as it is for Americans to obtain one. China had just 1,126 gun deaths in 2019, compared with the U.S., which had 37,040 that same year. The numbers look even worse when you remember that Chinas population is much larger at 1.4 billion, while the U.S. has just 335 million. The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that Trump plans to issue an executive order to stall the implementation of the TikTok ban as soon as he takes office on Monday. But the ban is supposed to go into effect on Sunday and its not entirely clear what kind of legal standing Trumps EO might have. In some sense, issuing the EO is likely just a signal to the Department of Justice to ignore the law. Because if the DOJ doesnt try to enforce it, thats one way of just invalidating the legislation that Congress passed. Nobody actually knows whats going to happen with TikTok in the coming days and weeks, as the Supreme Court is expected to hand down a verdict any day now. But whatever happens, Americans will be venturing to push boundaries, even as many American and Chinese users see this as a unique opportunity for cultural exchange, embracing the global village idea of the late 20th-century techno-utopians.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Florence Ion Published January 15, 2025 By Matt Novak Published January 15, 2025 By Thomas Maxwell Published January 15, 2025 By Matt Novak Published January 14, 2025 By Thomas Maxwell Published January 14, 2025 By AJ Dellinger Published January 13, 2025

  • Mature, dignified, sleek: The Switch 2 is everything I want from the new console, but is it too much of a departure for Nintendo?
    www.vg247.com
Look at it!Mature, dignified, sleek: The Switch 2 is everything I want from the new console, but is it too much of a departure for Nintendo? What I'm saying is I had a real American Psycho business card moment with the reveal.Image credit: Nintendo Article by Connor Makar Staff Writer Published on Jan. 16, 2025 We finally know what the Nintendo Switch 2 looks like, and cor, it's a looker. Immediately recognisable as a successor to the Switch, but sleeker. More refined. More mature. Still a splash of colour on each side to say, 'yeah I'm more powerful now, but I can still have fun with the kids when I want to'. Like an executive of a law firm that still sees the kids on the weekends. While the Switch is a vibrant splash of joy in the console space, the Switch 2 is that same joyful guy, but with a real job, now. Maybe a mortgage. It's everything I wanted to see in the Switch 2 reveal. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Now, many will look at this and think I'm totally missing the point of the Switch, aesthetically speaking. It's not meant to be this Air Force One black bit of kit for adults. Children are meant to see it a mile off and go, "yay I love Mario, I'm literally five." These people are not living in the real world. The average five-year-old is more likely to run towards a bottle of blue WKD and a mobile phone in modern Britain than a colourful console. The Switch 2 fits inside the real world we live in, ready to spring the joy of a new Mario Kart or an old Splatoon game among players like a bear trap. These people would also be neglecting the fact that, well, the Switch 2 is still colourful! Yeah, it's not entirely red or blue like the original Switch. But, compare it to the plain white PS5 or the largely mono-coloured Xbox Series X|S. Pull up images of both real quick (but keep this tab open and come back real quick, yeah?) You'll see that the Switch 2 is still a lot more exciting to look at than other modern consoles. You don't need to go wild to add some pop to your console. This is true of clothes, cars, houses, tattoos... Anything you can think of. Will this get the kids off their mum's Samsung? Maybe! | Image credit: NintendoThis splash of colour also helps differentiate it from other handhelds out there. Some out there, I won't name who, have stated the Switch 2 looks a little too close to the Steam Deck. These are folks who see traces of Gabe Newell everywhere, playing 20-year-old RPGs on their own at airports. The same sort of person that is still upset that the Source engine wasn't adopted by every developer on the globe. They're victims ultimately, and deserve pity rather than anger.Instead, I'll say this: why put our two First Ladies of Handheld Hardware against each other? Yeah, they're both portable consoles but the Switch 2 has a D-pad below the left analogue stick. It doesn't have those weird square panels on either side. As established before, it's got a more colourful demeanour. And anyway, the units are aimed at two separate markets, innit. If you want to aim worse than the rest of your team whilst playing Apex Legends and get yelled at by your team, the Steam Deck is for you. If you wanna have fun with the family you still talk to, the Switch 2 is over here. See, totally different. Is it too far a departure for Nintendo? Maybe. Some would argue that while it does retain a lot of that fun from the Switch 1 in this new design, it does lose a bit of that Nintendo magic. You could imagine another manufacturer making this thing. But I think, visually, it represents what the Switch 2 ultimately will be: a home for party games and more casual experiences, but also a home for more adult games and that 300-hour Stardew Valley save you can't let go of.It's hitting both worlds, and needs to establish itself as a console for both full-grown humans who still play games, and younger audiences keen to pick up their first console. I think Nintendo has nailed that with it's subtle, playful design.A bigger screen, little mouse Joy Cons, a little stand for you to put it down on, more ports, and magnets (how do they work?). It's pretty much everything I wanted from the Switch 2 reveal. Now, all that's left is to find out what when we will get a price on the thing. If it's above 600, then throw all this out the window, and I'll just keep my old console instead.

  • Trump administration might give a boost to deep-sea mining for critical minerals
    techcrunch.com
Critical minerals are the new oil: everyone needs them, but not every country has them. Thats led some to search for them in some pretty wild places. And few places are as outlandish as the ocean deep. But deep-sea mining appears poised to get a boost from the incoming Trump administration, according to The Wall Street Journal. A string of nominees all previously said that they support the practice, which usually involves vacuuming egg-like rocks known as nodules from the ocean floor. The nodules consist of a range of minerals, depending on where theyre located. Mining companies can recover copper, nickel, cobalt, and other minerals all vital to the data centers and the energy transition. But deep-sea mining is controversial. Life thousands of feet below sea level tends to be slow growing and fragile. Even small disruptions to the ocean floor can persist for decades, and scientists are concerned that the sediment plumes from mining company vacuums will leave scars that, over human time scales, may never recover.Removing nodules might threaten deep-sea life, too: Since light doesnt reach the depths to drive photosynthesis, organisms depend on other sources of energy and oxygen, from geothermal vents to the nodules themselves.Still, the value of those minerals and their presence in international waters has some countries salivating over the prospect. The International Seabed Authority, a UN organization, is tasked with regulating deep-sea mining in international waters, and it recently received a permit application from The Metals Company, a U.S. company thats working with the Republic of Nauru, an impoverished island in the South Pacific. Other countries, including the U.K., Canada, and France, have called for a ban on the practice.Given the deep-sea minings international focus, two Trump administration nominees stand out, Elise Stefanik and Marco Rubio. Stefanik is Trumps pick for UN ambassador, and Rubio is expected to head the State Department. Ultimately, theyll be the ones negotiating with other countries to determine how to regulate deep-sea mining.Despite the favorable political environment, deep-sea mining still has some rough waters ahead of it. Battery manufacturers have begun to shy away from expensive minerals like nickel and cobalt. If the trend continues, it could depress demand and drag down prices, undermining the sectors profitability.Topics

  • Window to the world
    www.architectural-review.com
A window is a lightbox of life happening beyond the limits of the interior, offering beauty and wonder regardless of the reality of life withinCredit:Olivia Arthur / MagnumOur familys share of the bedroom is closest to the rooms single window. There is a double bed which my mother and little brother Alex share, as well as a laundry basket, overflowing with clothes, and suitcases, stacked on top of each other, holding our possessions. An entire suitcase is dedicated to important documents, photos, memorabilia and my childhood drawings. This bag stays at the bottom ofthe stack to prevent Alex from turning itscontentsinto toys or a snack. For him, everything is exciting, new andworthy of being soaked with saliva.Surrounding our share of the room are two walls of painted plaster and two curtains, separating my family from another familys life. Alex is yet to understand that living in atwo-bedroom apartment with three other families may not be the norm. Hedoes not know that curtains do not always bisect a bedroom for two families toshare, or that anenclosed balcony is nottypically home toanother family. The rooms single window is a wonder forAlex a lightbox of tiny moving figures. Alexs favourite sight is a young man who arrives across the street with two yellow suitcases full of clothes. He picks up a railing and pallets from somewhere beyond the window frame and sets up between four concrete seats nestled by two large trees that obscure the shops behind them. From the suitcases he pulls out jackets, shirts andbucket hats until his pop-up shop isready for business. Alex always wells with excitement when our mother opens the window, even just acrack. The air outside is always crisper, carrying different sounds: the cars anxious to get on; the tiny people becoming louder; aweird vacuuming sound from the salon one storey below. He often tries to reach out to this little world, but the opening only allows his fingers to enter it.Next to the bedroom is a small living room. This space is primarily for the family of the apartments owners. It has an ornate handcrafted TV wall unit, displaying heirloom teacups, teapots and vintage crystal glassware that only come out on special occasions. The sofas are antique, stillin their plastic coverings, not to be usedcasually by anyone who is not a memberof the owners family. At the end of the living room is the front door, with a silver handle, chain and lock. There is a wooden chair next to the door which Alex once used to reach the handle but could not manage to open with the chair against the door. He gets upset with the number of people coming in and going out, not taking him with them. In his frustration, he returns to the bedroom window, where hehas the whole world at his fingertips. For Alex, this compact space remains filled with wonder. I yearn for his ability toexperience pure marvel. I dont go home too often; there isnt room for both of us.Explore the good rooms series, a collection of domestic spaces made, imagined or described by architects, curators and writers2025-01-16Kristina RapackiShare
