• If Elon Musk Keeps Picking Fights With Gamers, He Will Always Lose

BERLIN, GERMANY DECEMBER 01: SpaceX owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk arrives on the red carpet for the ... [+] Axel Springer Award 2020 on December 01, 2020 in Berlin, Germany. (Photo by Britta Pedersen-Pool/Getty Images)Getty ImagesElon Musk is a gamer. He definitely plays video games. Theres no real need to dispute that. What he is not is one of the best gamers in the world, something he seems to want everyone to believe. But the fanbases of those games are not buying it, and have undergone a campaign to embarrass Musk as much as possible about his claims, dragging him into childish internet fights. Ones that he cannot and will never win with this audience. The latest scuffle is that Musk and high-profile streamer Asmongold seemingly went to war after Asmon made a video, like a number of other creators, picking through all the obvious goofs Musk made as he claimed to be one of the worlds top Path of Exile 2 players. There were mistakes or knowledge gaps that anyone with a character that strong with that many hours played would not make, hence the narrative that Musk was paying others to grind out his characters for him, which may have also happened back in the Diablo days. The exchange resulted in Musk joking about a Chinese pilot for his account, but also apparently removing Asmongolds checkmark briefly, unfollowing him and then leaking DMs, misunderstanding how a YouTube creator/editor relationship work as he made an attempt at some sort of gotcha, which was promptly community noted on his own site.Musk may be one of the most powerful people on earth, running massive companies, having the ear of the President and heading toward possibly being the worlds first trillionaire, but somehow, for somewhat inexplicable reasons, he also wants to proclaim that hes a top gamer in the world.Even with an army of blue-check acolytes in his replies nodding at his purported gaming prowess, Musks army cannot compete with gamers who believe their hobby is being co-opted by someone, no matter how powerful, to make improper claims about his prowess. Path of Exile 2 fans have been roasting Musk since these videos emerged, and YouTuber and streamer reactions mocking his play have hit millions of views.MORE FOR YOUThe problem emerges when Musk purports to be an expert on games that he is clearly not an expert in. He knows enough to get by, but top level play eludes him unless hes on a character so strong it doesnt matter. Spotting that is easy to tens of thousands of players with more knowledge than him. This also extends into areas like this embarrassing DM leak with Asmongold, embarrassing for him as when Asmongold talks about consulting with his editors, Elon seems to believe that this is some sort of newspaper-like editor relationship where Asmongold is not his own man because he must answer to someone else. In reality this is simply talking about a team of editors who chop up big streamers clips and throw them up on YouTube, which happens all the time. Its yet another thing Musk knows nothing about and when he claims to, is torched by those in the community. There is a theory that like Barack Obama making fun of Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents Dinner which began his path toward the presidency, this idea of Musk wanting to be known as a top-tier gamer started when the Elden Ring build he posted became an instant meme because of how bad it was. But back then Elon was not claiming to be one of the best Elden Ring players in the world. Now hes doing so with Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2, only this time with other people allegedly grinding his characters out for him. No doubt they would have made him a better Elden Ring build.Elon Musk can try to trick gamers, to argue with them, to post their DMs against his own Terms of Service. But more than liberals and Tesla-haters and all other groups hes in conflict with, this is one battle hes never going to win.Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

  • Supreme Court Upholds Law Banning TikTok
    time.com
Sarah Baus, left, of Charleston, S.C., and Tiffany Cianci, who says she is a "long-form educational content creator," livestream to TikTok outside the Supreme Court in Washington, on Jan. 10, 2025.Jacquelyn MartinAPBy MARK SHERMAN / APJanuary 17, 2025 11:26 AM ESTWASHINGTON The Supreme Court on Friday unanimously upheld the federal law banning TikTok beginning Sunday unless it's sold by its China-based parent company, holding that the risk to national security posed by its ties to China overcomes concerns about limiting speech by the app or its 170 million users in the United States.A sale does not appear imminent and, although experts have said the app will not disappear from existing users' phones once the law takes effect on Jan. 19, new users won't be able to download it and updates won't be available. That will eventually render the app unworkable, the Justice Department has said in court filings. The decision came against the backdrop of unusual political agitation by President-elect Donald Trump, who vowed that he could negotiate a solution and the administration of President Joe Biden, which has signaled it won't enforce the law beginning Sunday, his final full day in office.Trump, mindful of TikToks popularity, and his own 14.7 million followers on the app, finds himself on the opposite side of the argument from prominent Senate Republicans who fault TikToks Chinese owner for not finding a buyer before now. Trump said in a Truth Social post shortly before the decision was issued that TikTok was among the topics inhis conversation Friday with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Its unclear what options are open to Trump once he is sworn in as president on Monday. The law allowed for a 90-day pause in the restrictions on the app if there had been progress toward a sale before it took effect. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar, who defended the law at the Supreme Court for the Democratic Biden administration, told the justices last week that it's uncertain whether the prospect of a sale once the law is in effect could trigger a 90-day respite for TikTok.Congress has determined that divestiture is necessary to address its well-supported national security concerns regarding TikToks data collection practices and relationship with a foreign adversary, the court said in an unsigned opinion, adding that the law does not violate petitioners' First Amendment rights.Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Neil Gorsuch filed short separate opinions noting some reservations about the court's decision but going along with the outcome.Without doubt, the remedy Congress and the President chose here is dramatic, Gorsuch wrote. Still, he said he was persuaded by the argument that China could get access to vast troves of personal information about tens of millions of Americans. Some digital rights groups slammed the courts ruling shortly after it was released.Todays unprecedented decision upholding the TikTok ban harms the free expression of hundreds of millions of TikTok users in this country and around the world, said Kate Ruane, a director at the Washington-based Center for Democracy & Technology, which has supported TikToks challenge to the federal law.Content creators who opposed the law also worried about the effect on their business if TikTok shuts down. Im very, very concerned about whats going to happen over the next couple weeks, said Desiree Hill, owner of Crowns Corner mechanic shop in Conyers, Georgia. And very scared about the decrease that Im going to have in reaching customers and worried Im going to potentially lose my business in the next six months. At arguments, the justices were told by a lawyer for TikTok and ByteDance Ltd., the Chinese technology company that is its parent, how difficult it would be to consummate a deal, especially since Chinese law restricts the sale of the proprietary algorithm that has made the social media platform wildly successful. The app allows users to watchhundreds of videosin about half an hour because some are only a few seconds long, according to a lawsuit filed last year by Kentucky complaining that TikTok is designed to be addictive and harms kids' mental health. Similar suits were filed by more thana dozen states. TikTok has called the claims inaccurate. The dispute over TikTok's ties to China has come to embody the geopolitical competition between Washington and Beijing.ByteDance and its Chinese Communist masters had nine months to sell TikTok before the Sunday deadline, Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., wrote on X. The very fact that Communist China refuses to permit its sale reveals exactly what TikTok is: a communist spy app. The Supreme Court correctly rejected TikToks lies and propaganda masquerading as legal arguments. The U.S. has said its concerned about TikTok collecting vast swaths of user data, includingsensitive information on viewing habits, that could fall into the hands of the Chinese government through coercion. Officials have also warned the algorithm that fuels what users see on the app is vulnerable to manipulation by Chinese authorities, who can use it to shape content on the platform in a way thats difficult to detect.TikTok points out the U.S. has not presented evidence that China has attempted to manipulate content on its U.S. platform or gather American user data through TikTok.Bipartisan majorities in Congress passed legislation and Biden signed it into law in April. The law was the culmination ofa yearslong saga in Washingtonover TikTok, which the governmentsees as a national security threat.TikTok, which sued the government last year over the law, has long denied it could be used as a tool of Beijing. A three-judge panel made up of two Republican appointees and a Democratic appointee unanimously upheld the law in December, prompting TikToks quick appeal to the Supreme Court.Without a sale to an approved buyer, the law bars app stores operated by Apple, Google and others from offering TikTok beginning on Sunday. Internet hosting services also will be prohibited from hosting TikTok.ByteDance has said it wont sell. But some investors have been eyeing it, including Trumpsformer Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchinand billionaire businessmanFrank McCourt. McCourts Project Liberty initiative has said it and its unnamed partners have presented a proposal to ByteDance to acquire TikToks U.S. assets. The consortium, which includes Shark Tank host Kevin OLeary, did not disclose the financial terms of the offer.McCourt, in a statement following the ruling, said his group was ready to work with the company and President Trump to complete a deal."Prelogar told the justices last week that having the law take effect might be just the jolt ByteDance needs to reconsider its position.___Associated Press writers Haleluya Hadero, Mae Anderson and Lindsay Whitehurst contributed to this report. • Massive fire erupts at world's largest battery plant in California, forcing evacuations
    www.techspot.com
What just happened? A major fire broke out at Moss Landing, Vistra Energy's massive battery storage facility, which is said to be the largest in the world. Huge flames and thick plumes of hazardous black smoke reportedly poured from the plant, prompting evacuations in the surrounding area. The blaze was first reported around 3 p.m. local time at the site, located just off Highway 1 along California's Central Coast. Monterey County officials swiftly issued evacuation orders as the inferno raged unchecked into the evening hours. Nearby residents were also advised to shelter in place and seal windows and doors to avoid exposure to potentially toxic fumes, according to Mercury News.Vistra, the Texas-based owner of the natural gas power plant and adjoining lithium-ion battery complex, confirmed that personnel had been evacuated after the fire erupted. The fire reportedly originated in the 300-megawatt Phase I section of the 750-megawatt facility, located on the site of a retired PG&E natural gas plant. A company spokesperson stated that the cause remains unknown but will be thoroughly investigated. The dramatic scenes served as a stark reminder of the risks associated with utility-scale battery farms, as California races to expand massive energy storage to support its clean energy goals. The Moss Landing site reached its impressive 750-megawatt capacity in 2023 enough to power over half a million homes for up to four hours. However, the state projects that it must triple its energy storage capacity by 2045 to meet demand and achieve net-zero emissions. This isn't the first time the Moss Landing battery plant has experienced a fire, as a malfunctioning heat detector triggered an incident back in 2021.These safety concerns have fueled pushback against such projects in some coastal communities. For instance, residents in Morro Bay approved a ballot measure last November blocking permits for a new Vistra battery complex near a local power plant. However, it's unlikely to halt the state-approved plan. // Related StoriesLithium battery fires like this are notoriously difficult to extinguish due to the extreme heat and noxious gases they release. Fire crews face significant challenges in bringing the blaze under control while minimizing risks of respiratory issues and chemical exposure.

  • Trading comes to Pokmon TCG Pocket later this month, but theres a catch
    www.digitaltrends.com
Pokmon TCG Pocket is finally bringing the trading function to the game later this month. One of the hottest titles on the market,TCG Pocket is a more simplified, streamlined version of the regular trading card game with a heavier focus on card collecting than battling. Trading is a big part of that, but the feature has been unavailable since launch. In what should come as no surprise, there are restrictions on how trade works. You will only be able to trade cards with a diamond rarity of one through four or cards with a one-star rarity, and alternate art cards wont be tradeable. You need to be friends with the person youre trading with, too. Cards must also be the same rarity to be eligible for trade, so you wont be able to swap a one-diamond Heatmor for a three-diamond Serperior, no matter how many of them you might have. (At last count, I have 17 Heatmor. Send help.)Recommended VideosPokmon TCG Pocket broke the news through a post on X, detailing all the different rules around trading. In the hours since the post went live, fans have responded with dozens of comments, many criticizing the rules. TCG Pocket has since replied to these concerns with another post. Please enable Javascript to view this contentThank you, everyone, for your immediate thoughts on this topic!Your concerns are seen. Once this feature becomes available, I'd like to invite everyone to try it and provide feedback. This way, the game can continue to evolve in an enjoyable way for everyone. Pokmon TCG Pocket (@PokemonTCGP) January 16, 2025Fans of the game pointed out that finishing sets and especially collecting the rarest cards of all would be difficult with the current restrictions. The game is also introducing another item that has to be used to perform trades, which likely means another type of currency. How that item is obtained has not been shared. The post says that certain cards from Genetic Apex and Mythical Island booster packs will be eligible for trade, but it doesnt list the cards that will not be available (although promotional cards from limited-time events are likely included on the non-tradeable list.)The team did not provide a release date for the feature, but many estimates put the next major update on January 29.Editors Recommendations

  • Trek FX+ 7S e-bike is a premium city commuter

ditch the car for solo commutes Trek FX+ 7S e-bike is a premium city commuter The FX+ 7S improves just about everything from the FX+ 2, but doubles its price tag. Credit: Chris DeGraw Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn morePost-pandemic, my creed became "Bicycles deliver the freedom that auto ads promise." That belief is why Ive almost exclusively used a bike to move myself around Portland, Oregon since (yes, I have become a Portlandia stereotype). However, that lifestyle is a lot more challenging without some pedal assistance. For a few summers, I showed up sweaty to appointments after pedaling on a $200 single-speed. So in 2024, I purchased the FX+ 2, based primarily on my managing editors review. Its since been a workhorse for my daily transportation needs for the past year; I've put more than 1,000 miles on it in eight months. So given my experience with that bike, I was the natural choice to review Treks upgraded version, the FX+ 7S.A premium pedalerFirst off, my time with the FX+ 2 has been greatno regrets about that purchase. But my one quibble is with the battery. Due to the frequency and length of my rides, I need to charge the bike more often than not, and I sometimes experience range anxiety riding to the opposite side of town. Even though both e-bikes are considered lightweight at 40 pounds, theyre still not the easiest things to pedal sans assist, and Im reliant on their built-in lighting systems after dark. But I didn't have to worry about my remaining charge with the FX+ 7 and its 360 Wh battery. Its extra capacity gives me much less range anxiety, as I can ride without fear of losing juice on the route home. And the LCD on the frame gives you a clear indicator of how much distance and time you have left in your ride, which is always handy. I would caution, however, about relying too much on your estimated distance remaining. The LCD provides some useful info. You can see how much charge is left on the battery, or you can press that button to see your speed, wattage power, or miles ridden. Credit: Chris DeGraw During a 15-mile, hour-long ride while fluctuating between the first two assist levels I had modified, I drained 61 percent of the battery. While the estimated time remaining on my ride was consistent and accurate, the predicted mileage dropped occasionally, although thats probably because I was changing the assist level frequently. There were also a couple of occasions where I was trying to drain the battery completely on a ride home, and after switching the assist level, the motor gave out at around 1015 percent charge remaining, according to the LCD info (the lights, however, stayed on). It wasnt a terrible inconvenience since I was close to home, but its not ideal for anyone hoping to ride consistently with some level of assist.(Trek offers a 160 Wh range extender for $550. I doubt youll need it, considering the range on the bikewhich can be around 60 miles on an unmodified eco settingbut its available if you want the extra juice.)The TQ-HPR50 motor is also a big improvement over my bike's Hyena Gen 2 (50 Nm versus 40 Nm of torque). The timing for the FX+ 2 pedal assist was unadjustable and always a bit slow to kick in, but after tweaking the settings through the Trek Central App, the extra power on the FX+ 7S was evident in all aspects of my ride.I no longer experienced a lengthy lurch as I began pedaling from a full stop, and using a Level 3 assist made any uphill climb a breeze. The bike is also remarkably quiet; on one occasion, I was riding alongside a friend who was riding a different manufacturers e-bike, and the noise coming from his ride was noticeable; mine wasnt. Its also a Class 3 e-bike, which means it can offer pedal-assisted speeds of up to 28 mph (45 kph), but it doesnt provide any throttle. Portland city streets are full of gunk during the winter, but that didn't affect my pedaling too much. Chris DeGraw The Trek's backlight curves around to offer illumination from the side, too. Chris DeGraw You can switch your assist level with this handlebar toggle. Chris DeGraw Trek markets this bike as the ultimate city commuter, and can I see why. Ive ridden it for several weeks during a dreary Pacific Northwest winter, where the roads are constantly slick and full of debris. Did any of that affect the bikes performance? Not that I can tell. Despite the gunky roads (and panniers filled with groceries), the aluminum-frame bike performed great, and the hydraulic disc brakes provided plenty of stopping power in wet conditions. The Shimano CUES U6000 drivetrain with a 10-speed shifter never experienced a hiccup.Even riding through the foliage muck and with extra cargo weight, I experienced smoother pedaling and was less impacted by all the bumps and debris in the road, making it even more comfortable to ride than the already-pleasant FX+ 2. The only rough spot I experienced was getting a punctured tube due to a shard of glass in the road, but thats not the tires fault (and its typical of Portland).Trek also added other upgraded commuter considerations:A Quad Lock in the middle of the handlebars that keeps your phone charged and functions as a nice secondary display in case you need turn-by-turn directionsContoured Bontrager handlebars, which are the most comfortable grip Ive felt on any bikeA better lighting system, which includes a 120-lumen front light and a backlight that also slightly wraps around to offer illumination from the sideA grip near the bottom of the frame that makes carrying the bike up stairs much easierA MIK cargo rack that was also accommodating to my Ortlieb panniers Attaching my Pixel 8a to the Quad Lock was handy when I needed some turn-by-turn directions. Credit: Chris DeGraw The price of the FX+ 2 ($2,500 at the time; its now being sold at $1,850) was a downside we noted in our review, and it's the main gripe I have with the FX+ 7S, which sells for $4,000. While its a better bike by every measure, is the advanced model worth more than twice the price? Your budget and feature wish list for a commuter bike will have to answer that question. If price isnt a concern and youre looking for a bike that is built to last longer, opt for the FX+ 7S. Its better in every regard (except it looks more like an e-bike than its predecessor due to the LCD screen; I did appreciate how often people were surprised to hear the FX+ 2 was electric). If youre mostly concerned about the range and are unwilling to spend $4,000, opt for the FX+ 2 and get the range extender. In either case, youre getting a quality bike that will perform well and give you the freedom to ditch the car for many of your daily commutes.Jacob MayCopy EditorJacob MayCopy Editor Jacob is a copy editor at Ars Technica. • US Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban but the fight isn't over yet
    www.newscientist.com
A protester holds a pro-TikTok sign in front of the US Supreme Court on 10 January 2025Allison Robbert/The Washington Post/Getty ImagesThe US Supreme Court has upheld a ban on the popular video streaming app TikTok, which is set to take effect on 19 January. The ban will require US firms to block users from accessing or updating TikTok through app stores or internet browsers unless ByteDance, the apps Chinese parent company, sells it to a US company by the 19 January deadline. AdvertisementTikToks challenge to the law, which the Supreme Court began hearing on 10 January, argued that it violates the US Constitutions protection of free speech. On the same day, the court heard arguments in a related case: a legal counsel representing TikTok content creators argued that a ban also infringes on those individuals constitutional rights. But the US solicitor general, Elizabeth Prelogar, argued that the ban on TikTok is about preventing foreign espionage as opposed to clamping down on free speech. The US governments case is that the Chinese government could use TikTok to collect sensitive personal data on hundreds of millions of people in the US that could be later used against them. The Supreme Court unanimously agreed with the governments argument, ruling against TikTok and individual creators in both cases. There is no doubt that, for more than 170 million Americans, TikTok offers a distinctive and expansive outlet for expression, means of engagement, and source of community. But Congress has determined that divestiture is necessary to address its well-supported national security concerns regarding TikToks data collection practices and relationship with a foreign adversary, the opinion states. The latest science news delivered to your inbox, every day.Sign up to newsletterTikTok will shut down the app for US users on the same day the ban goes into effect, 19 January, according to Reuters. But this may not be the last twist in the legal drama.US President Joe Biden will leave office on 20 January, the day after the ban kicks in. An official in his administration has stated that Biden wont enforce the law, according to AP News. Instead, the strength of the ban depends on the actions of President-Elect Donald Trumps upcoming administration.Trump initially supported a TikTok ban during his first term as president, but has since changed his stance, expressing support for allowing the platform to continue US operations. After he takes office on 20 January, he could ask law-makers to repeal or amend the law or instruct the government to not enforce it.Topics:

  • Deciding the fate of leftover embryos
    www.technologyreview.com
This article first appeared in The Checkup,MIT Technology Reviewsweekly biotech newsletter. To receive it in your inbox every Thursday, and read articles like this first, sign up here. Over the past few months, Ive been working on a piece about IVF embryos. The goal of in vitro fertilization is to create babies via a bit of lab work: Trigger the release of lots of eggs, introduce them to sperm in a lab, transfer one of the resulting embryos into a persons uterus, and cross your fingers for a healthy pregnancy. Sometimes it doesnt work. But often it does. For the article, I explored what happens to the healthy embryos that are left over. I spoke to Lisa Holligan, who had IVF in the UK around five years ago. Holligan donated her genetically abnormal embryos for scientific research. But she still has one healthy embryo frozen in storage. And she doesnt know what to do with it. Shes not the only one struggling with the decision. Leftover embryos are kept frozen in storage tanks, where they sit in little straws, invisible to the naked eye, their growth paused in a state of suspended animation. What happens next is down to personal choicebut that choice can be limited by a complex web of laws and ethical and social factors. These days, responsible IVF clinics will always talk to people about the possibility of having leftover embryos before they begin treatment. Intended parents will sign a form indicating what they would like to happen to those embryos. Typically, that means deciding early on whether they might like any embryos they dont end up using to be destroyed or donated, either to someone else trying to conceive or for research. But it can be really difficult to make these decisions before youve even started treatment. People seeking fertility treatment will usually have spent a long time trying to get pregnant. They are hoping for healthy embryos, and some cant imagine having any left overor how they might feel about them. For a lot of people, embryos are not just balls of cells. They hold the potential for life, after all. Some people see them as children, waiting to be born. Some even name their embryos, or call them their freezer babies. Others see them as the product of a long, exhausting, and expensive IVF journey. Holligan says that she initially considered donating her embryo to another person, but her husband disagreed. He saw the embryo as their child and said he wouldnt feel comfortable with giving it up to another family. I started having these thoughts about a child coming to me when theyre older, saying theyve had a terrible life, and [asking] Why didnt you have me? she told me. Holligan lives in the UK, where you can store your embryos for up to 55 years. Destroying or donating them are also options. Thats not the case in other countries. In Italy, for example, embryos cannot be destroyed or donated. Any that are frozen will remain that way forever, unless the law changes at some point. In the US, regulations vary by state. The patchwork of laws means that one state can bestow a legal status on embryos, giving them the same rights as children, while another might have no legislation in place at all. No one knows for sure how many embryos are frozen in storage tanks, but the figure is thought to be somewhere between 1 million and 10 million in the US alone. Some of these embryos have been in storage for years or decades. In some cases, the intended parents have deliberately chosen this, opting to pay hundreds of dollars per year in fees. But in other cases, clinics have lost touch with their clients. Many of these former clients have stopped paying for the storage of their embryos, but without up-to-date consent forms, clinics can be reluctant to destroy them. What if the person comes back and wants to use those embryos after all? Most clinics, if they have any hesitation or doubt or question, will err on the side of holding on to those embryos and not discarding them, says Sigal Klipstein, a reproductive endocrinologist at InVia Fertility Center in Chicago, who also chairs the ethics committee of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Because its kind of like a one-way ticket. Klipstein thinks one of the reasons why some embryos end up abandoned in storage is that the people who created them cant bring themselves to destroy them. Its just very emotionally difficult for someone who has wanted so much to have a family, she tells me. Klipstein says she regularly talks to her patients about what to do with leftover embryos. Even people who make the decision with confidence can change their minds, she says. Weve all had those patients who have discarded embryos and then come back six months or a year later and said: Oh, I wish I had those embryos, she tells me. Those [embryos may have been] their best chance of pregnancy. Those who do want to discard their embryos have options. Often, the embryos will simply be exposed to air and then disposed of. But some clinics will also offer to transfer them at a time or place where a pregnancy is extremely unlikely to result. This compassionate transfer, as it is known, might be viewed as a more natural way to dispose of the embryo. But its not for everyone. Holligan has experienced multiple miscarriages and wonders if a compassionate transfer might feel similar. She wonders if it might just end up putting [her] body and mind through unnecessary stress. Ultimately, for Holligan and many others in a similar position, the choice remains a difficult one. These are very desired embryos, says Klipstein. The purpose of going through IVF was to create embryos to make babies. And [when people] have these embryos, and theyve completed their family plan, theyre in a place they couldnt have imagined. Now read the rest of The Checkup Read more from MIT Technology Review's archive Our relationship with embryos is unique, and a bit all over the place. Thats partly because we cant agree on their moral status. Are they more akin to people or property, or something in between? Who should get to decide their fate? While we get to the bottom of these sticky questions, millions of embryos are stuck in suspended animationsome of them indefinitely. It is estimated that over 12 million babies have been born through IVF. The development of the Nobel Prizewinning technology behind the procedure relied on embryo research. Some worry that donating embryos for research can be onerousand that valuable embryos are being wasted as a result. Fertility rates around the world are dropping below the levels needed to maintain stable populations. But IVF cant save us from a looming fertility crisis. Gender equality and family-friendly policies are much more likely to prove helpful. Two years ago, the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a legal decision that protected the right to abortion. Since then, abortion bans have been enacted in multiple states. But in November of last year, some states voted to extend and protect access to abortion, and voters in Missouri supported overturning the state's ban. Last year, a ruling by the Alabama Supreme Court that embryos count as children ignited fears over access to fertility treatments in a state that had already banned abortion. The move could also have implications for the development of technologies like artificial uteruses and synthetic embryos, my colleague Antonio Regalado wrote at the time. From around the web Its not just embryos that are frozen as part of fertility treatments. Eggs, sperm, and even ovarian and testicular tissue can be stored too. A man who had immature testicular tissue removed and frozen before undergoing chemotherapy as a child 16 years ago had the tissue reimplanted in a world first, according to the team at University Hospital Brussels that performed the procedure around a month ago. The tissue was placed into the mans testicle and scrotum, and scientists will wait a year before testing to see if he is successfully producing sperm. (UZ Brussel) The Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk makes half the worlds insulin. Now it is better known as the manufacturer of the semaglutide drug Ozempic. How will the sudden shift affect the production and distribution of these medicines around the world? (Wired) The US has not done enough to prevent the spread of the H5N1 virus in dairy cattle. The response to bird flu is a national embarrassment, argues Katherine J. Wu. (The Atlantic) Elon Musk has said that if all goes well, millions of people will have brain-computer devices created by his company Neuralink implanted within 10 years. In reality, progress is slowerso far, Musk has said that three people have received the devices. My colleague Antonio Regalado predicts what we can expect from Neuralink in 2025. Right off the bat, Maggiano's felt high-end and intimate. In some ways, Maggiano's reminded me of when I used to visit Little Italy in Baltimore. Terri Peters On the outside, the restaurant's black awning with simple lettering felt elegant and welcoming.Inside, Maggiano's ambiance reminded me of a high-end, pricey steakhouse or an authentic Italian restaurant. The candle-lit, chandelier-dotted interior felt quite intimate and cozy.I didn't feel like I was in a chain restaurant at all. In fact, it reminded me of when I used to live in Baltimore and visit its Little Italy neighborhood for dinner. The restaurant has a family-style menu, but we chose to order individual dishes. The Maggiano's menu was pretty easy to navigate. Terri Peters The restaurant offers a family-style menu with shareable courses, including starters, an entre, a pasta dish, and a dessert. It seemed like a decent deal for about $50 a person. However, everyone in my party had specific cravings and wanted pasta, so we ordered from the regular menu instead. We started the meal with a round of drinks. We spent a decent amount of money on drinks at Maggiano's. Terri Peters To start off the meal, my husband ordered a Negroni ($9) while my teenagers and I stuck with sodas and iced tea ($5 each).Later in the meal, my husband ordered an $18 glass of wine to go with his pasta, followed by a $5 cup of coffee with dessert. He spent way more on drinks than others in our group over $30 but the three of us were content with our free refills.A complimentary bread course came out soon after we were seated. At Maggiano's, a bread service was complimentary with our meal. Terri Peters Soon after we were seated, we were brought a basket of fresh, warm ciabatta bread and oil with herbs for dipping. The bread was delicious, and we were served so many pieces that we even had some left to take home. For our appetizer, we shared fried mozzarella. My family enjoyed the fried mozzarella at Maggiano's. Terri Peters We started our meal by sharing the fried mozzarella for $16.The crisp planks of battered and fried cheese were topped with melted mozzarella and served with a tomato dipping sauce.Everyone at my table enjoyed this tasty appetizer, which felt like an elevated take on mozzarella sticks. My daughter also got a bowl of creamy tomato soup as an appetizer.Maggiano's tomato soup came with tasty croutons. Terri Peters Topped with tasty croutons, Maggiano's tomato soup ($10.50) was a great starter for my soup-loving daughter. She really enjoyed it and even let me try a few bites. The creamy soup tasted perfectly tangy and seasoned with just enough salt to make each bite perfect.I tried one of Maggiano's signature pasta dishes.Maggiano's Rigatoni D pasta seemed to be pretty popular online. Terri Peters Before visiting any chain, I love checking out the dishes that have copycat recipes on social media. I found a lot of people making copycat versions of Maggiano's Rigatoni D pasta on TikTok, so I ordered it.The dish includes rigatoni mixed with roasted chicken, mushrooms, caramelized onions, and marsala cream sauce. It was really good, and I can see why TikTokers recreate the $28.50 dish. The generous portion size meant I took some of the pasta home. Fortunately, it was as delightful leftover as it was served fresh. My daughter also chose a rigatoni dish for her meal.My daughter enjoyed the spicy vodka sauce. Terri Peters One of Maggiano's newer menu items is rigatoni alla vodka ($26.50), a combination of rigatoni, Calabrian chiles, caramelized onions, and vodka sauce. My daughter added grilled chicken to the dish for an additional $8.50.We're big fans of pasta with vodka sauce and make it at home often even so, Maggiano's version of the dish held up.This creamy pasta was really delicious, especially when eaten leftover the next day.My son ordered classic spaghetti and meatballs. My son enjoyed the spaghetti and meatballs at Maggiano's. Terri Peters My son is a picky eater, so he kept his order simple with spaghetti and meatballs. His $25.50 spaghetti dish was really good. It was full of classic Italian flavors, with tangy tomato sauce and hearty meatballs. He had no complaints and also came home with leftovers. Lastly, my husband chose a carbonara with lobster.Maggiano's lobster carbonara cost us $39. Terri Peters Another fan-favorite dish at Maggiano's is lobster carbonara ($39), a blend of lobster, smoked bacon, sugar snap peas, white-wine truffle cream sauce, Parmesan, and spaghetti.TikTok is also full of copycat recipes for this pasta dish, so we expected it to be pretty impressive. After all, what's not to love about creamy sauce, pasta, bacon, and lobster? My husband thoroughly enjoyed this generously portioned dish. Although I couldn't try it due to a shellfish allergy, he said it was everything he'd want from a carbonara, with just the right hints of creamy sauce and carb-y spaghetti to soak it all up.Maggiano's also had my favorite dessert and it tasted wonderful. We finished our meal with dessert at Maggiano's. Terri Peters Crme brle is my favorite dessert, so I'm sure to order it whenever it's on a menu. We were incredibly full from our evening of bread, fried cheese, and pasta, so we decided to share one $12.50 order of it.I'm glad we shared because this dessert felt huge, just like the pasta dishes we had earlier. It was easily double the size of any crme brle I've had in a restaurant. It was also delicious. As full as I was, I couldn't help but go back for bite after bite of this creamy, sugary, warm treat. Maggiano's impressed us more than other high-end dining chains have. Our meal felt just as high-end and high quality as meals we've had at nice steakhouse chains. Terri Peters Our $230 dinner (including tax and before tip) included lots of drinks, a complimentary bread service, an appetizer, four giant pasta dishes, and a dessert.Overall, it felt like a great value, and the atmosphere at Maggiano's rivaled any high-end chain we've visited. We spent less on our meal here than we would at most steakhouse chains, but our dining experience felt just as high-end and high-quality.Our table felt intimate and we were able to chat with our teenagers and have a great dinner together, something that's just as valuable to my husband and I as the food these days.To save money next time, we might share dishes since the portion sizes are huge. I'd also consider coming back just to sit at the bar and have crme brle for dessert.Based on my experience, I'd definitely return to Maggiano'sand add it to thelist of chain restaurants I'd visit with family again and again.
