• Ukraine's military chief says Russia has 'practically halved' artillery ammo usage after its production lines and depots were hit
    www.businessinsider.com
Ukrainian strikes have forced Russia to reduce its ammo usage, Oleksandr Syrskyi said. The Ukrainian commander in chief said Russian shell usage has "practically halved" for months.Ukraine has been hitting ammo depots, oil facilities, and factories deep inside Russia for months.Ukraine's military commander in chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said Russia has cut down its artillery ammo usage in recent months due to Ukrainian strikes on the Kremlin's production facilities."For several months now, the artillery ammunition expenditure rates in the Russian army have practically halved," Syrskyi told Ukrainian broadcaster TSN in an interview released on Sunday."Here is a vivid example," Syrskyi added. "If previously the figure reached up to 40,000 rounds per day, it is now significantly lower."Syrskyi attributed the reduction to Ukraine's attacks on "industrial enterprises" that manufacture ammunition, missile parts, and other weaponry on Russian soil. His comments come as Ukraine has increasingly reported that it's been carrying out long-range strikes on Russian oil facilities, munitions factories, and ammunition depots across the border. On Tuesday, Kyiv said it had launched its "largest attack" on Russian targets with missiles and drones, including hits on a fuel storage facility for bombers and a factory that produces rocket parts and artillery ammo.Russia's defense ministry said that it shot down nearly 150 drones that evening, providing an indicator of the operation's scale.Ukraine says its attacks on Russian facilities continue, with another reported strike on a gunpowder factory in the Tambov region on Thursday. Its monthslong pattern of long-range attacks underscores Kyiv's ability to break through air defenses and hit facilities deep inside Russian territory. Some of its most notable strikes happened when Ukraine attacked three ammunition depots in Krasnodar and Tver in September, areas that are hundreds of miles behind the border. The UK's defense ministry said at the time that at least one of these depots saw the loss of 30,000 tons of ammunition, saying that the trio of strikes resulted in the largest loss of Russian and North Korean ammunition up to that point in the war.North Korea has been supplying artillery systems and millions of shells to Russia since early 2024.Any strain on Russia's ammo production and reserves would likely be significant for the war because analysts say it's becoming increasingly clear that the fate of the battlefield hinges on the quantity of weapons and manpower available to either side.To meet the war's demands, Russia's defense sector has swelled to staggering levels when considering its total spending. Its defense budget grew from $59 billion in 2022 to $109 billion in 2023. The Kremlin is planning to spend about 13.5 trillion rubles, or about $131 billion now, on defense in 2025.That's nearly a third of its entire federal budget and is up from 10.8 trillion rubles in 2024.Russia's defense ministry did not respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider.

The Wildness Promenade is located in Zone C of the Wild Island Cultural & Life Community. The predecessor of the community was the Dongjiang Wine Factory built in 1951. On the basis of retaining the original 18 building groups and the landscape texture, it has gradually become the most vibrant cultural community in Huizhou since the renovation started in 2019. The story of BDSD BoundlessDesign and Wild Island began in 2021. We created a bookstore, Ueno Bookstore. In 2022, we once again completed the renewal of the public garden of Wild Island, and in 2024, we carried out the renovation of Zone C of Wild Island.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Take "Wildness Promenade" as the theme of this renovation, we continue the spirit and atmosphere of the site in a way that interweaves the old with the new and creates brand-new memory points with new structures, allowing people to experience the collision and integration of the new and the old as they walk through. It links landscapes, promenades, squares and buildings in the three dimensions of points, lines, and surfaces, creating open spaces of different scales and realizing rich horizontal and vertical layers.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Corridors: Construct Smooth Circulation Lines. The old factory buildings from over 70 years ago are rugged and imposing. The remaining structures stand independently, lacking a systematic layout. To integrate the architecture with commercial spaces and create a sense of enjoyment in wandering, it's essential to bridge the fragmented feel of the existing site. On one hand, we must consider the original architectural conditions; on the other, we need to bridge the gap between the old buildings and new application scenarios.Save this picture!Save this picture!Preservation is the best design expression for the renovation of historical buildings. To avoid unnecessary demolition and modification, we have reorganized the circulation lines, connecting the spaces with lightweight sky bridges and stairs, bringing a smooth overall experience. It expands the single wandering function on the circulation lines, optimizes the accessibility of the second floor, and combines the protection and innovation of the old buildings.Save this picture!Steps: Delicate Remodeling on a Micro Scale. Before the renovation, the side of Zone C close to the park's exit was unattractive, and few visitors would enter the entire park through it. BDSD Boundless Design hopes that through the renovation of the exit, the buildings can be integrated with the pedestrian paths, and be connected in series. This will not only enrich the park's visiting experience but also attract visitors to come and take pictures. The open function serves as both a passageway and a stepped plaza, meeting the needs of celebrations during holidays. When stepping onto the steps, the open roads among the buildings are connected with the iconic old chimney on the axis.Save this picture!Wildness: The Ruggedness of Nature. The designer hopes to present the charm of nature invisibly. By preserving the original tall plants and creating a wild garden where plants can grow freely, the disorder of nature collides with the exquisite geometry of human craftsmanship, enhancing the ambiance of the old buildings. The time frozen in the industrial style is interwoven with the natural cycle of growth and withering in the four seasons, and the present and the future are gradually merging.Save this picture!Save this picture!"A growing living block" is the principle that BDSD Boundless Design has continuously adhered to during the four-year-long renewal of Wild Island. Space is like a container that can hold people's joys, excitements, and melancholy, and can endow history and old buildings with new vitality. Each renovation is just a starting point, and only by leaving room for growth can the space truly be returned to people.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Huizhou, ChinaLocation to be used only as a reference. Where there's freedom, there's also punishment for those who push the limits. In the open-world genre, functional police systems are a common feature (when the time period permits), designed to monitor players' actions and act as a countermeasure for wreaking havoc. Law enforcement can also add extra challenges during missions where players must commit crimes as part of the story.

  • Dynamax Articuno counters, weakness, and battle tips in Pokmon Go
    www.polygon.com
Dynamax Articuno is the first Legendary were seeing in Max BattlesforPokmon Go. Its making its debut during Max Monday on Jan. 20 from 6-7 p.m. and will be available afterwards until Jan. 27 when Dynamax Zapdos will debut. While its likely that Dynamax Articuno wont be as difficult as Gigantamax Battles, it still will likely put up a fight, so were here to help you out.Below, we list out some general Max Battle tips and counters for Dynamax Articuno inPokmon Go.Dynamax Articuno weaknessArticuno is ice- and flying-type, so it has a plethora of weaknesses to take advantage of. Its weak against rock-, steel-, fire-, and electric-type moves. Under normal circumstances, the best move type to use would be rock-type, since itll do even more damage since its strong against both ice- and flying-type, but theres not any Dynamax Pokmon that have rock-type Dynamax moves (as of writing this). On the other hand, Articuno will resist bug- and grass-type moves, so stay away from those.Dynamax Articuno best countersWith the above in mind, theres a few counters to bring to Articuno. We recommend the following to focus onoffensivemoves:Gigantamax/Dynamax Charizard with Dragon BreathGigantamax/Dynamax Toxtricity with SparkDynamax Cinderace with Fire SpinNote that Dynamax Articuno can have Ancient Power, which will dish out some serious damage against Charizard. Keep your Charizard in your wings and consider only bringing it out to Dynamax, while other tankier Pokmon absorb the damage. As for defense, you should bring the following with Max Guard:Gigantamax/Dynamax Blastoise with Water GunGigantamax Lapras with Water GunDynamax Metagross with Bullet PunchThere still arent too many ideal Pokmon to use ashealers, since Max Spirit wants you to use high-HP Pokmon. If you have a Blastoise or Lapras built out, you can teach them healing moves in the meantime to help out.Even if you dont have these powered up, consider just bringing thestrongestDynamax Pokmon you have. If you have a maxed out Dynamax Gengar and your Dynamax Charizard isnt leveled (and you dont have the means to power it up), just bring your Gengar.General Max Battle tipsIf youve been struggling in Max Battles, heres some general tips to survive and make sure youre an asset to your team. While Gigantamax Battles are tough, a Legendary Max Battle shouldnt be as tough as that. You can slack a little, but you should still heed our advice:Make sure you have enough players.High-efficiency groups with maxed out investments can take down the Articuno with fewer people, but practically, if you dont have hundreds of spare candy and even more Stardust laying around, this isnt going to be an option for you. Make sure you have as many people as possible to ensure that you get your musically inclined cruise ship-shell creature.Dont sleep on Max Spirit and Max Guard. Teams work best when theres a variety of moves, not just maxed-out attacks. Each player should bring Pokmon with the defensive and healing moves unlocked as well. Max Guard will focus single-target damage towards you and reduce the damage taken and Max Spirit will heal the whole party, so these moves are really important to make sure your damage-dealers can keep dishing.Remember to swap to super effective moves when its time to Dynamax. ForDynamax Pokmon, their max moves will be whatever type their fast move is. This means if you have a Metagross with Meteor Mash, it will know Max Steelspike. A Gengar with Shadow Claw will know Max Phantasm. Take advantage of this and make sure to swap to a Pokmon that will deal super effective damage to your target before Dynamaxing, if you can.Focus on your fast moves. You want to spam your fast moves to build up that Dynamax meter and often times, using your charge move is actually a DPS loss when compared to the damage you could be doing with your max move will be. Spam those attacks!Level up a few mons, but you dont have to go too hard. Depending on your group size, you absolutely do not need to max out all your Dynamax Pokmon to level 40-50. While this will make it easier on the rest of your group, if this isnt an investment you can make, you dont have to stress about it. Power things up as high as you can afford to, but dont fret if you dont have a maxed out Pokmon. That all being said, make sure to come as prepared as you can be. This is a team effort and theres a reason why groups of 30-40 people can still fail. Do not just bring your unleveledDynamax Woolooexpecting a free ride to a powerful Pokmon. (After all, ifeveryonedoes that, then you certainly wont clear the battle.) Again, you dont have to completely max out your Pokmon, but it will be better for everyone involved if you bring something helpful to the table.Keep your eye out for a shiny Articuno! If you clear the raid, there is a chance that the Lapras you catch will be shiny which also means itll be a guaranteed catch. Use a Pinap Berry to score extra candy if you get lucky enough to find a sparkly Articuno.

  • This Case Turns Your iPhone Into a Retro Console
    lifehacker.com
Retro game emulators are finally on the App Store, and they're thriving. Apps like Delta and RetroArch let users play old retro Nintendo and console games with ease. The software side of retro gaming is surprisingly mature; the hardware side, however, has some catching up to do. Playing retro games using touchscreen controls leaves a lot to be desired, and you can't always carry a game controller with you everywhere you go. This is where Bitmo Lab's new Gamebaby controller case comes in.It's an iPhone case that's split in two. The bottom part is a game controller with support for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and NES games. According to Gamebaby, the layout supports more than 7000 games that use the Game Boy button layout. (This only works when you're playing games in the vertical orientation.) The case features a D-pad, A/B buttons, Start, Select, and shoulder buttons for more advanced games. Credit: Gamebaby You first mount it as a regular iPhone case. The bottom part, which emulates the Game Boy controller, slides off with ease. It can then be flipped and mounted to the front of the iPhone, and is secured with a satisfying snap. This is purely a mechanical case: There is no Bluetooth support, no wifi, no charging cable. On the back of the buttons you'll find those squishy silicone pads that will press the touchscreen buttons for you. All the magic happens via Delta's custom skins for Game Boy controllers. The touchscreen button placement is taken care of automatically.Because these aren't real, electronic buttons, don't expect super-fast response times or huge tactical feedback. (When you're playing old Pokmon games, that's not really the feel you're going for, anyway.) Currently, the case is available only in one color, and is designed only for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 Pro Max (hopefully other smaller iPhones will be supported soon). Gamebaby is available to pre-order at an early bird price of $24.99; when it officially launches, it will retail for $39.99. You can order Gamebaby directly from their website, and they plan to release the product in the first half of 2025.Gamebaby isn't the only exciting game controller coming out this year. At CES 2025, Lifehacker's Michelle Ehrhardt got to play around with MCON, a MagSafe-compatible slide-out controller case for iPhone and other smartphones. MCON will be the first case available in this slim form factor, and a full controller, along with D-pad and joysticks.

  • Apple pauses AI notification summaries of news alerts in latest iOS beta
    www.engadget.com
Some significant changes are coming to Apple Intelligence notification summaries. With the latest slate of developer previews for iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3 and macOS Sequoia 15.3, Apple has suspended the system's aggregated notifications, specifically from news and entertainment apps, while it works on improvements to the alerts. The company has also added a new disclosure that appears when users first enable notification summaries. It states that the notifications are a beta feature and that they may produce unexpected results. Separately, the betas add a new option that allows users to decide from the lock screen whether they want notifications from an app summarized. Lastly, the AI-generated alerts use italicized text to further distinguish them from their non-summarized counterparts.Last week, Apple told Engadget it was working on an update to notification summaries. "Apple Intelligence features are in beta and we are continuously making improvements with the help of user feedback," Apple said. "A software update in the coming weeks will further clarify when the text being displayed is summarization provided by Apple Intelligence. We encourage users to report a concern if they view an unexpected notification summary.Notification summaries are one of the features that arrived alongside the initial release of Apple Intelligence with iOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Shortly after rolling out to regular users, they quickly led to bad press for Apple. Notably, the BBC published multiple reports accusing the blurbs of spreading misinformation. One especially unflattering example saw a summary claim that Luigi Mangione, the alleged murderer of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/ai/apple-pauses-ai-notification-summaries-of-news-alerts-in-latest-ios-beta-195900023.html?src=rss

  • SF-SO folds steel sheets to create "paper-like" shelving system
    www.dezeen.com
Industrial design duo SF-SO has developed a range of modular bent-metal storage that is only 1.6 millimetres thick but can support the equivalent of a baby elephant in weight. The Thin furniture series is the first direct-to-consumer collection created by SF-SO founders Jae-hoon Jung and Ho-young Joo, designed with consideration for manufacturing and distribution.SF-SO has developed a range of modular shelving from mild steel sheetsThe collection includes a storage unit and wall shelf, made from mild steel sheets with a thickness of just 1.6 millimetres that are bent at right angles and interlocked to form a robust and stable structure with a slimline appearance."The designs emphasise minimalism and precision, achieving a paper-like aesthetic while maintaining functionality and strength," Jung told Dezeen. "From a distance, the storage unit appears almost weightless."The metal sheets have a thickness of just 1.6 millimetresDespite its lightweight look, the folding technique used to construct the storage unit enables it to support over 100 kilograms of weight on its shelves without requiring additional reinforcement. That's around as much as an elephant calf weights at birth.SF-SO's construction also conceals the fixings used to join the pieces beneath the shelves, so they are hidden when the unit is viewed from most angles. The simple connecting system comprises screws that slot through pre-drilled holes in the folded sections, ensuring users can easily build the furniture themselves. The Thin series comes in a range of different colours and finishesThe duo's decision to use sheet metal as their main material for the Thin collection was driven by a desire to create simple products that can be produced affordably."Not only is sheet metal bending a straightforward manufacturing method, but the resulting product can be easily assembled and disassembled using simple hardware," Jung said."This allows the product to be packed as compactly as possible, enabling efficient global shipping."Read: Josmo opens Mumbai store with "just the right amount of drama"The modular shelving panels are available in standardised lengths of 50 and 80 centimetres, with two heights of either 50 and 80 centimetres allowing for four different configurations.Various units can be arranged side-by-side to create systems of varying lengths, while a range of different colours and finishes allows customers to personalise the finished product. The storage unit is able to support over 100 kilograms of weightThe Thin Wall Shelf applies the same principles as the storage unit although it doesn't support quite as much weight combining two 45-degree-folded metal panels to create a shelf with a minimal profile. The product appears to touch the wall at a single point where the two folded metal sheets meet, enhancing its weightless aesthetic. A gap between the wall and the vertical part of the shelf provides additional space for placing items such as letters or books. The Thin Wall Shelf is designed to appear as if it is floatingThe products are straightforward to ship due to the use of uniform panels that can be stacked and flat packed, helping to reduce costs and lower emissions during transportation. The collection is manufactured by Heungbu Industries in Incheon, South Korea, using laser cutting machinery along with automated bending machines and precision robotic welding. The Thin furniture series will be made available through the studio's SFSO-MFG online retail platform, set to launch in February 2025 to allow the designers to sell their pieces directly to consumers.A gap between the wall and the shelf provides additional space for placing itemsJung told Dezeen that SF-SO plans to introduce new items to the Thin series, including stools, tables and chairs that share the same design language.Since joining forces in 2019, the design duo has worked on a range of projects applying their minimalist approach to objects ranging from furniture to lighting and electronics.Previously, the studio has created a series of digital products with analogue interfaces, including a conical Bluetooth speaker that is turned on by flipping it on its side. The photography is courtesy of SF-SO.The post SF-SO folds steel sheets to create "paper-like" shelving system appeared first on Dezeen.
