SDL 3 Released / News / January 22, 2025 / SDL, or the Simple DirectMedia Layer is one of the most important open-source game development frameworks and they just released SDL 3. Well technically its SDL 3.2.0, but it is the first production ready version of the SDL 3 branch. Key features of SDL 3 include:Extremely good documentation: Weve spent a ton of effort writing and revising the API reference.Example programsto get you started, running in your web browser!More consistent API naming conventions. Everything is named consistently across the API now, instead of different subsystems taking different approaches. Also, weve tended toward more descriptive names for things in SDL3.Main Callbacks: optionally run your program from callbacks instead of main().GPU API: access to modern 3D rendering and GPU compute in a cross-platform way.Dialog API: access to system file dialogs (file and folder selection UI for opening/saving).Filesystem API: simple directory management and globbing, access to topic-specific user folders.Storage API: Abstract interface to platform-specific storage.Camera API: access to webcams.Pen API: access to pens (like Wacom tablets and Apple Pencil, etc).Logical audio devices: different parts of an app can get their own unique audio device to use.Audio streams: handle buffering, converting, resampling, mixing, channel mapping, pitch, and gain. Bind to an audio device and go!Default audio devices: SDL3 will automatically manage migrating to new physical hardware as devices are plugged in, ripped out, or changed.Properties API: fast, flexible dictionaries of name/value pairs.Process API: Spawn child processes and communicate with them in various ways.Colorspace support: Surfaces and the renderer, etc, can manage multiple colorspaces. The Clipboard APIcan support any data type(SDL2 only handled text), and apps can provide data in multiple formats upon request ina provided callback.Better keyboard input, for all your keypress needs.Customizable virtual keyboardson iOS and Android.High DPI support is dramatically improved over SDL2.App metadata APIfor letting SDL report things about your app correctly (like in the About dialog on macOS, etc).and much, much more.If you are migrating from SDL 2 be sure to check out the migration guide linked below. • SlideGar: A Novel AI Approach to Use LLMs in Retrieval Reranking, Solving the Challenge of Bound Recall
    www.marktechpost.com
Out of the various methods employed in document search systems, retrieve and rank has gained quite some popularity. Using this method, the results of a retrieval model are re-ordered according to a re-ranker. Additionally, in the wake of advancements in generative AI and the development of Large Language Models (LLMs), rankers are now capable of performing listwise reranking tasks after analyzing complex patterns in language. However, a crucial problem exists that appears trivial but limits the overall effectiveness of these cascading systems. The challenge of the bounded recall problem, where a document is irrevocably excluded from the final ranked list if it wasnt retrieved in the initial phase, causes the loss of high-potential information. To solve this problem, researchers came up with an adaptive retrieval process. Adaptive Retrieval (AR) differentiates itself from previous works by leveraging the rankers assessments to expand the retrieval set dynamically. A clustering hypothesis is applied in this process to group similar documents that may be relevant to a query. Adaptive Retrieval (AR) could be better understood as a pseudo-relevance feedback mechanism that enhances the likelihood of including pertinent documents that may have been omitted during the initial retrieval.Although AR serves as a robust solution in cascading systems, contemporary work in this vertical operates under the assumption that the relevance score depends only on the document and query, implying that one documents score is computed independently of others. On the other hand, LLM-based ranking methods use signals from the entire ranked list to determine relevance. This article discusses the latest research that merges the benefits of LLMs with AR.Researchers from the L3S Research Center, Germany, and the University of Glasgow have put forth SlideGar: Sliding Window-based Adaptive Retrieval to integrate AR with LLMs while accounting for the fundamental differences between their pointwise and listwise approaches. SlideGar modifies AR such that the resulting ranking function outputs a ranked order of documents rather than discrete relevance scores. The proposed algorithm merges results from the initial ranking with feedback documents provided by the most relevant documents identified up to that point. The SlideGar algorithm utilizes AR methods like graph-based adaptive retrieval (Gar) and query affinity modeling-based adaptive retrieval (Quam) to find document neighbors in a constant amount of time. For LLM ranking, the authors employ a sliding window to overcome the constraint of input context. SlideGar processes the initial pool of documents given by the retriever for a specific query and, for a predefined length and step size, ranks the top w documents from left to right using a listwise ranker. These documents are then removed from the pool. The authors used the reciprocal of the rank as a pseudo-score for the documents. The authors employed the MSMARCO corpus data for practical purposes and evaluated its performance on REC Deep Learning 2019 and 2020 query sets. They also used the latest versions of these datasets and de-duplicated them to remove redundancies. A variety of sparse and dense retrievers were utilized. For rankers, the authors employed different listwise rankers, including both zero-shot and fine-tuned models. The authors leveraged the open-source Python library, ReRankers, to apply these listwise re-rankers.After conducting an extensive set of experiments across diverse LLM re-rankers, first-stage retrievers, and feedback documents, the authors ascertained that SlideGar improved the nDGC@10 score by up to 13% and recall by 28%, with a constant number of LLM inferences over the SOTA listwise rankers. Furthermore, regarding computation, the authors discovered that the proposed method adds negligible latency (a mere 0.02%).Conclusion: In this research paper, the authors propose a new algorithm, SlideGar, that allows LLM re-rankers to address the challenge of bounded recall in retrieval. SlideGar merges the functionalities of AR and LLM re-rankers to complement each other. This work paves the way for researchers to further explore and adapt LLMs for ranking purposes.Check out the Paper. All credit for this research goes to the researchers of this project. • Does Netflix Have a Free Trial in 2025?
    www.ign.com
Since its beginning in the streaming world back in 2007, Netflix has been a pioneer and a primetime player that brought us quality, original shows (Squid Game, Stranger Things, The Witcher) and movies (The Irishman, All Quiet on the Western Front, Marriage Story) to remember. As streaming has evolved and changed throughout the years, streaming services have also been changing in structure, content rights, and pricing. Despite the increase in competition (and prices), Netflix does not offer any sort of free trial. Even though the service does have a free trial page in the Netflix help center, it simply states that Netflix does not offer free trials and points to links on how to change your Netflix plan or cancel your Netflix membership. Can You Get Netflix for Free in Other Ways?Although Netflix doesn't have a free trial directly, you can still technically get free Netflix through other means. The only true "free" option available is T-Mobile's Netflix on Us benefit that offers a free Netflix when you sign up for certain Go5G plans of the service. Both Verizon and Comcast offer subscription bundles that can help reduce the overall cost of Netflix, but these plans don't give you the service for no additional cost. What Netflix Alternatives Have Free Trials?Luckily, if you are looking for a free streaming service trial, there are still multiple competitors that offer quality content and a chance to sample their streaming library for free. • A 2015 phone design shows that the iPhone 17 Air camera bump could look just fine
    9to5mac.com
We yesterday got a look at what is claimed to be the iPhone 17 Air camera bump, and the reaction hasnt been overly favorable. While we dont know for sure that the photo shows the real thing, our own sources indicate that the design depicted is probably accurate Its easier than ever to create fake images these days, using either AI or 3D printers, but we noted that this one does at least align with what our own sources tell us.Majin Bu has a mixed track record when it comes to sharing Apple hardware leaks particularly this early in a rumor cycle. However, I have also seen separate CAD drawings from previously accurate sources that corroborate this camera bar-style design for the iPhone 17 Air.Commentators werent impressed. It looks pretty dumb in these photos. It seems so top-heavy and unbalanced. As others noted it looks similar to the Pixel 9, however that visually looks better to me.Pixel 9, is that you?Oh man. That was a good laugh.I dont like the look of that. It looks odd. This looks awful. Its worth noting a couple of things, however. First, these leaks always seem to be poor-quality photos, and in this case we also have the distortion created by what appears to be vacuum-sealed plastic packaging. Those are pretty challenging conditions for anything to look good! While I agree it looks terrible in this photo, I dont think it will in reality.Second, human beings are resistant to change, and we see a consistent three-step pattern with any new Apple design: everyone hates it, everyone gets used to it, no-one could imagine it being any other way.One thing many of us will welcome is that the phone wont wobble when placed on a desk or table! Im not a fan of camera bumps in general though do accept that we couldnt have the entire phone as thick as the camera module, so they are unavoidable but hate the way iPhones wobble when you try to use them on a flat surface. Even if its just swiping away a notification, it bugs me.This design would at least solve that issue, and it would also slightly tilt the display toward the user, which is a bonus when not accompanied by wobbling.Reminiscent of the Nexus 6PAs several people commented, the design is reminiscent of the Google/Huawei Nexus 6P from way back in 2015. All Ive done is removed a couple of extraneous elements to give an idea of what this kind of bump could look like in reality, I honestly dont see anything wrong with it.So although I dont expect to be in the market for the iPhone 17 Air personally Ill be sticking with the Pro Max for screen size and camera features I wouldnt mind owning a phone with this design.Photo: Krlis Dambrns (edited by 9to5Mac)Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. • Pentagon Official Boasts That AI Is Helping The Military Kill People Faster Than Ever Before
    futurism.com
"Well always have humans involved in the decision to employ force."Kill Chain EngageThe Pentagon is bullish on recent AI advances, saying they're helping kill people faster than ever before. In an interview withTechCrunch, the Pentagon's chief digital and AI officer, Radha Plumb, admitted in a mask-off moment that the technology is helping to expedite the way the military kills."We obviously are increasing the ways in which we can speed up the execution of kill chain," Plumb told the website in an interview, "so that our commanders can respond in the right time to protect our forces."According to a Mitchell Institute white paper from 2023, "kill chain" is militaryspeak for "the process militaries use to attack targets in the battlespace.""The kill chain can be broken down into specific steps find, fix, track, target, engage, and assess that enable planners to build and task forces for combat operations," the paper explains.Military PrecisionIn short, the Pentagon's top AI officer bragged off-handedly about using AI to expedite the process of ending lives. Though she didn't get into the specifics, Plumb did admit that AI is primarily used in the planning and strategizing phases of military kill chains."Playing through different scenarios is something that generative AI can be helpful with," Plumb, who previously worked at Facebook and Google, told TechCrunch. "It allows you to take advantage of the full range of tools our commanders have available, but also think creatively about different response options and potential trade-offs in an environment where theres a potential threat, or series of threats, that need to be prosecuted."That's a wild admission: the Pentagon is not only using AI to dream up scenarios that would require lethal force, but also boasting about it on the record. There are few more dystopian usages of the technology, and here one of the military's ranking officials is laying it out for the average reader.Plumb said the Pentagon doesn't buy or operate fully autonomous weaponry, meaning that for now there are still humans involved in any lethal decision-making."As a matter of both reliability and ethics, well always have humans involved in the decision to employ force," she insisted, "and that includes for our weapon systems."We're not sure about you, but that's not very reassuring and with AI lover Donald Trump back in the Oval Office, even that modicum of oversight could soon be under attack.More on military AI: OpenAI Strikes Deal With Military Contractor to Provide AI for Attack DronesShare This Article

  • Chinese AI Firm Says Its Open Source New Model Is Beating OpenAI's Most Advanced Publicly Released Model
    futurism.com
A win for open source.Start Your EnginesUnless you've been living under a rock, you're probably aware that AI is developing at a breakneck pace.Early yesterday morning, a gleeful post on X-formerly-Twitter by Chinese AI firm DeepSeek announced a new model called R1 a "reasoning" AI model which the outfit says is performing "on par" with OpenAI's o1, a splashy model released last month. And unlike 01, DeepSeek R1 is open source, meaning hobbyists and researchers can tinker with it at home and even release their own versions. The reasoning model is said to narrowly edge out OpenAI's system in "math, code, and reasoning tasks." If the claim holds up a big "if," since the results haven't yet been independently verified it's an exciting milestone for a much smaller lab in the AI research space, which iscurrently dominated by deep-pocketed ventures like OpenAIDeepSeek taking a dig at the closed-source OpenAI by celebrating its work as pushing the "boundaries of **open AI**!"Open AIUnder the open source model, anyone has the legal rights to use, alter, and distribute DeepSeek's software (household-name open source projects include Mozilla Firefox, VLC Media Player, and Linux.)In theory, it's the most egalitarian approach to software development. However, not everyone's convinced that open source AI is the way forward; in an interview on the podcast "Tech Won't Save Us," professor of economics at University College London Cecelia Rikap argued that open source AI's development is often still connected to a for-profit business model."In principal, open source is very positive... the more we share knowledge, the more knowledge we are producing," she said. "What Amazon, Google and Meta have been doing is putting pieces of the puzzle in open source, [which] helps them to gain popularity... It is also a way to get people working for free in improving pieces of the puzzle, which only make sense together with the other pieces, and some of those pieces are kept secret, registered as copyright... basically in the end, those who profit from collaborative development are the same Big Tech."DeepSeek is no exception. The AI firm is a subsidiary of a Hangzhou-based hedge fund called High-Flyer, which trades through the Securities and Futures Commission out of Hong Kong. So on a certain level, yes it's a win for the little guys. But on another, it's a victory for Chinese financiers, not unlike Meta which has also used open source development practices to fuel its rapid market climb. So while this is still an impressive feat for the Chinese tech industry specifically and open source AI-development more broadly, only time will tell if the cheap new model will lead to equally egalitarian use cases for the advancement of all, or if it will be yet another investor's footnote in the tech sector's.And in the AI horserace, OpenAI's o3 is said to be prepping for launch.More on Chinese AI:The Chinese Military Is Weaponizing Facebook's Open Source AIShare This Article
