  • Yellowjackets season 3 trailer finally looks like the show we were promised
    www.polygon.com
Yellowjackets has always shown a lot of promise thats part of the problem. Since the show premiered in 2021, the potential for chaos, conspiracy, and cannibalism seemed ripe for the taking; the show would get crazier, and wed find out the answer to all the various questions of what happened and how things exploded as badly as they did. But that promise hasnt quite paid off, with the first two seasons being instead more notable as plodding and a bit of an anticlimax. (I hate to say this but: they didnt even eat the baby!)But season 3s trailer? Its enough to make a person believe in well, whatever theyre praying and sacrificing to out in the woods. The trailer is more or less all paranoia and, blessedly, weird cult shit: In the past, one of the yellowjackets is saying that people are willing to do some messed up stuff just to see another day. Weve got girls running through the woods in weird ceremonial costumes, performing rituals, questioning who should be the leader, and promising that tonight, well give the wilderness what it wants. Modern-day Misty (Christina Ricci) might protest about the fact that they ate each other out there in the wilderness, but the supercut here begs to differ. Clearly the secrets are catching up to them though, its unclear how just yet. The remaining yellowjackets team members seem alarmed that anyone else could know, given that the circle is small, and everyone who knows what happened out there is either them or dead. Thats not preventing it from making them panicked though; as Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) says, the only way to be safe is to be the only one left. All that and Jackie (Ella Purnell) is back! I might be made a fool, but given all the potential and lingering mystery of Yellowjackets, I certainly want to believe the shows capable of really going there. Three seasons in (to a reportedly five-season plan), we might finally be entering the find out portion of all this fucking around. Now thats some weird cannibal cult stuff Id like to see.Yellowjackets season 3 premieres on Paramount Plus on Feb. 14, with two new episodes. (They will air on Showtime on Sunday, Feb. 16.)

  • When Toronto Sceptres goalie Carly Jackson isnt stopping pucks, theyre playing Baldurs Gate 3
    www.polygon.com
It was a big deal when Electronic Arts added the Professional Womens Hockey League to NHL 25. Though the game launched without the newly formed womens hockey league, EA added the league and its players to NHL 25 in November 2024, coinciding with the start of the PWHLs second season. Though womens teams have been playable in the franchise since NHL 22, when EA added national squads from the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship tournaments, NHL 25 is the first time many of the PWHLs players have seen themselves in a video game. Its a surreal moment for a lot of them, including Toronto Sceptres goalie Carly CJ Jackson, who said as much in an Instagram video posted in November. NHL adding us to the game is lit and awesome and a dream come true, Jackson said. Ive dreamt about this since I was a kid.Though Jackson hasnt played the NHL video games in some time, they grew up playing the games and plenty of other games, too. When theyre not between the pipes on the ice, Jackson is playing video games; the current rotation is Fortnite, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and Baldurs Gate 3. Polygon spoke to Jackson in January about everything gaming from currently played games and being in NHL 25 to thoughts on Dragon Age: The Veilguard and building a PC. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Toronto Sceptres (@pwhl_sceptres)Polygon: Are you a big NHL 25 player?Carly Jackson: I was very heavily into it in high school, so that was dating myself, but 10 years ago. And then, I remember, I played Chel like, I had NHL 07 for my PSP. And I remember driving to my hockey game in the back county in Nova Scotia, and Id be playing with my friend and wed go game for game. Thats the memories I have of playing Chel growing up. So when I found out that we were actually in the game, I think my inner child and my adult self was pretty excited to be in a video game. Thats a pretty, pretty cool thing to say, especially among my social circles. My brothers a big gamer, and I play video games every day, so its a huge deal to me. [Being able] to actually play as myself in a game was just a really special moment in terms of having a passion for hockey and also gaming. Its just a childhood dream that has been achieved, and it feels just as good as I thought it would. What was the first thing you did in NHL 25 after the PWHL update?Oh, I put myself in net I put me in both nets. Same team against the same team, but I put myself in both nets. I was a little bit disappointed in my gaming performance, because I havent played Chel in a while. But I was really happy with my video game self performance. I thought I was pretty competitive, and I made some nice saves. I was frustrated but also happy with myself, because I was also shooting on myself [while] making saves for my home team as the same time. What do you think about your stats in-game? Do you have a sense for how the developer comes up with that?I was always curious like, I wonder what my stat line would be, in terms of, as players, your speed, your overall score, that kind of stuff. I dont know how they determine it. I dont know the behind the scenes on that, but I like where Im sitting. I think one of the coolest things is that Ive had so many people from over the course of my life who have messaged me and been like, Hey man, I just got an Xbox or a PlayStation so I could play as you, and its so fun. Or, theyve pulled me out of the card packs. People keep sending me pictures of it, and its so, so cool. So Ive been reconnecting with a lot of old friends because theyre seeing me in this game. Its so fun.Have you played online yet? Ive always imagined it like the meme They dont know theyre playing with the Carly Jackson.I havent played online yet. Ive been doing the PWHL career [mode] to win the Walter Cup with the Sceptres. And then Ive done a couple Play Now [games] against friends. But I havent played online against random people yet.Ive been reconnecting with a lot of old friends because theyre seeing me in this gameBeyond NHL 25, what are you playing? Do you play on the road?I sure do. I play every day. Ive always used Fortnite as a social platform, because I have a lot of college friends who play it. A lot of people play that game, so its always in the rotation. But lately Ive been playing Black Ops 6, mostly the Zombies [mode], and my brother got me Baldurs Gate 3 for Christmas, and that has been my No. 1. When I have a few hours to play, Im playing Baldurs Gate. Its one of his all-time favorites, so he got it for me, and now Im obsessed with it. Id say thats been my main rotation.I also just finished Squirrel With a Gun in about one day. And then Ive been playing The Forest, and the sequel [that] just came out, Sons of the Forest its a horror game. Ive been playing that with my brother as well. Thats what I play when Im home. And then ast year, when I made the team, the Toronto PWHL that was what it was called at the time, its the Sceptres now I bought myself a Nintendo Switch as a treat so that I could play on the road. When were on the road, I will play my Switch. I just finished Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and mostly this year, Ive been playing Pokmon [Legends:] Arceus. I just finished the first ending, and now Im playing the true or the real ending. What do you play on when youre home?I got a PC setup this summer. I always wanted one. When I was a kid, I was on Xbox 360. Then I made the switch over to PlayStation. But then this summer, I got super obsessed with computer building, so I ended up getting a whole setup, it being a total personal project. Im absolutely hooked. I love my PC. Its like my baby. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Carly Jackson (@carlyjackson97)Do you have a favorite game of all time?My first love was probably Legend of Zelda, because it was the first great game I played. But a personal favorite through my entire gaming career I love the Fallout series. Fallout is just so epic. All the lore, all the storytelling, and telling it in a lighthearted way where you can almost be silly, but the storytelling is actually quite dark. That or the Dragon Age series is also very good. I just finished playing Veilguard about a month ago.Ive been playing Veilguard too. What are your thoughts as a big Dragon Age fan?I enjoyed it. It wasnt everything I hoped it would be, just because it took it was in development for so long, and I know there was some hiccups along the way and things like that, which is totally reasonable. But I missed the choice selection. Ill probably do a couple of playthroughs, because I just love the series so much. But it didnt feel as connected as the other games. Id say the first and the third Dragon Age: Origins and Inquisition were my favorites. Im glad I played Veilguard, but it wouldnt be at the top of the list of all the Dragon Age games for me.Are you the biggest gamer on your team? Do any of you play together at all?Yeah, I would say Im the biggest gamer on the team. But yes, we do have girls that play. Sometimes when were driving on the bus, well hotspot somebodys Wi-Fi, and well all play Fortnite on our Switches. There are a few girls who have a Switch that well rotate around. When Im home, [Toronto Sceptres forward] Izzy Daniel and [Toronto Sceptres defenseman] Allie Munroe weve been playing Call of Duty mostly, but we mix in some Fortnite too.

  • Netflix Just Raised Its Prices Again
    lifehacker.com
Its difficult to keep track of how much Netflix costs these days, since the company keeps raising its damn prices. That goes extra if you want to share your account with others: The company killed free password sharing in the U.S. back in May of 2023. Since then, if you want to lend out your Netflix password to someone else, youll need to tack on an extra monthly charge. But even that monthly charge has increased. During its Q4 2024 earning results call on Tuesday, Netflix announced it would be raising prices for all subscriptions and extra users. Heres where the companys various subscription options currently stand, as of January 2025.Standard with ads ($7.99 per month)Standard with ads is currently Netflixs cheapest plan. Launched in November of 2022, the plan gives subscribers access to most of Netflixs library of movies and TV shows, and all of its mobile games. Its a bit hard to find updated lists of the titles not included with a Standard with ads plan (the latest appears to be a 2024 article from Variety) but, in any case, youll see a lock icon next to titles your ad-supported plan doesnt allow. The plan lets you stream on two supported devices at once in Full HD. That means your content will stream in 1080p, and not in 4K HDR. You can also download titles to two devices at a time. In addition, you cannot add other users to your plan. The plan cost $6.99 for quite a while, before Netflix upped it to $7.99 in January. Standard ($17.99 per month, plus $8.99 for an extra user)Theres one immediate difference between Standard and Standard with ads: the lack of ads. Standard lets you stream Netflix to your hearts contentall of Netflixs content, mind youwithout ever serving you a single ad. You know, like Netflix always used to do. Youll also be able to download those titles to up to two supported devices at a time. Standard also invites you to add someone outside your household to your account for an extra $8.99 per month. (That's $1 more than it used to cost.) That raises standards monthly price from $17.99 to $26.98. Youll only be able to add one additional outside user to your account, however, so choose wisely. While you dont have to deal with ads, nor do you have limitations on what you can watch, your content will look the same, since the video quality is capped at 1080p. If you want 4K HDR shows and movies, youll need to pay even more. Premium ($24.99 per month, plus $8.99 for each extra user)A Premium Netflix account is as good as it gets. Here, you have unlimited access to Netflixs library, including the ability to stream in 4K HDR when available. Netflix lets you stream concurrently on up to four devices at once, and download titles on up to six devices at a time. This subscription was previously $22.99, but Netflix raised the price to $24.99 this week. You also have the option to add up to two users outside your household to your plan. Of course, that adds up fast: Premiums $24.99 per month cost goes up to $33.98 when adding one user, and $42.97 when adding two. Imagine telling someone in 2022 watching season four of Stranger Things that you pay more than $40 a month for Netflix.

  • How to Find a Watch Band That Doesnt Contain Forever Chemicals
    lifehacker.com
We may earn a commission from links on this page.A recent study found that some smartwatch bands contain perfluorohexanoic acid, one of the forever chemicals that is suspected of contributing to health issues. But these chemicals, also called PFAS, arent in all watch bandsso heres how to know what youre buying. What did the recent study find? Before we get into the specifics of watch-band shopping, lets put this into context. The study found that perfluorohexanoic acid and other PFAS were present in many of the watch bands tested. The researchers did not look for health effects on the people who wore the watch bands. They tested 22 watch bands of various brands and price points and found that 15 of them contained more than 1% fluorine, which suggests that they contain PFAS. This included all 13 of the bands that were advertised as being made with fluoroelastomersmore about that in a minute, since this is a term youll want to pay attention to when shopping. The researchers were able to extract a specific PFAS chemical, perfluorohexanoic acid, from several of the bands. Other research has shown that this chemical can be absorbed through the skin, so it may be worth avoiding until we know more about its health effects. How dangerous are PFAS in watch bands? The short answer is: We dont know. The Environmental Protection Agencys fact sheet on PFAS explains that exposure to certain levels of PFAS has been linked to health issues such as reduced fertility, increased risk of cancer, developmental delays in children, and reduced immune system response to vaccines, to name a few.But thats a summary of a broad area of research: Some exposures that have been studied involved very high levels of the chemicals (for example, in people who work with large amounts of them). There are also many different chemicals in the PFAS family and some may be more concerning than others. The EPA writes: Research is also underway to better understand the health effects associated with low levels of exposure to PFAS over long periods of time. In short, we dont know a lot yet about the health effects of PFAS in watch bands, or in other sources like water and soil. But it may be a good idea to avoid bands with PFAS if you want to be cautious.Graham Peaslee, who led the study on watch bands, points out that the chemical the study focused onperfluorohexanoic acid, one type of PFASis under-studied because until recently, researchers didnt realize it accumulated in the blood. (It can be found in whole blood, but not in the blood serum that is usually sampled for these types of studies.) More studies on the health effects will hopefully come out in the future.Which watch bands contain PFAS?The bands that were tested included ones from Nike, Apple, and Fitbit, but the study didnt call out specific brands or items as testing positive. Peaslee told me in an email that We didn't test enough samples to be sure any one brand is entirely PFAS free, or entirely PFAS. So you cant rely on brand names. What you can look for is the material that the watch band is supposed to be made of. Remember when I said that all the fluoroelastomer bands in the study appeared to contain PFAS? Fluoroelastomer is a type of synthetic rubber that is supposed to be nicer quality than silicone watch bands, so manufacturers often proudly say that these bands are made of fluoroelastomer or FKM rubber. Peaslee says: If [a watch bands description] says fluoroelastomer or FKM, I would avoid it, but if it says silicone, nylon, or other fabric, leather, or metal, then you are PFAS-free.What is the difference between fluoroelastomer and silicone watch bands?Silicone watch bands are not known or suspected to contain PFAS. Fluoroelastomer bands, on the other hand, are more likely to contain PFAS based on the results of this recent study.Fluoroelastomers are used in higher-end watch bands because they are more resistant to damage from sweat, oils, and chemicals. They have a less sticky or dusty texture than silicone. Many people prefer them, and they are generally more expensive than silicone bands. Peaslee says if youre paying more than $30 for a rubbery-looking band, its likely to be fluoroelastomer. (In the study, none of the bands under $15 tested positive for PFAS. This is one place where it pays to be cheap.)Fluoroelastomer bands are often advertised as being made of FKM rubber, like this one that says in the product description: FKM Rubber (Not Silicone). What should you look for when buying a band for your smartwatch or fitness tracker? Not all watch bands tell you what they are made of; some of the bands in the study werent advertised as being fluoroelastomer, but contained fluorine anyway.Based on this study and Peaslees advice, you stand the best chance of avoiding PFAS in a watch band by looking for these features:Not labeled as fluoroelastomer or FKMLabeled as being made of a different, specific material, like silicone, nylon, or leatherInexpensive (under $30; ideally under $15)I asked Peaslee about banned substances lists that have been released by some manufacturers, like this one from Garmin and this one from Apple. He said that since 2016, manufacturers have been making an effort to remove PFOA and PFOS (two types of PFAS) from their products. But there are still plenty of other PFAS besides those, so the existence of those lists doesnt tell you that a brand is safe.Peaslee hopes that with enough pressure from consumers, brands will start marketing products as PFAS-free. But for now, the rules of thumb above are your best bet for finding a watch band that doesnt contain PFAS.

  • Dozens of subreddits are banning X links from their communities
    www.engadget.com
Dozens of subreddits have opted to block links to X in their communities over the last 24 hours in a movement that appears to be gaining momentum across Reddit. Hundreds more appear to be actively discussing or considering a similar move with their members.Engadget counted more than two dozen subreddits, which collectively have millions of members, that have already restricted their communities ability to post content from X in some way in recent days. These include large subreddits, like r/formula1, which has nearly 5 million members, and smaller communities like r/ultraman, which has 30,000.The movement seems to have been popularized, at least in part, by r/newjersey, whose mods announced a ban on X links Tuesday. Fuck this guy. X links are now banned from r/newjersey, they shared in a post that now has more than 65,000 upvotes. Accompanying the post was a photo of Elon Musk extending his arm, Musk made two apparent Nazi salutes during a speech at Donald Trumps inauguration which have been widely celebrated by fascists online.A number of other subreddits quickly followed suit, with many sharing a link to the r/newjersey post. X links have been barred from r/military (489,000 members), r/comics (2.7 million), r/casualnintendo (184,000), r/spiderman (1 million), r/pcgaming (3.8 million), r/rupaulsdragrace (1 million), r/KingdomHearts(345,000), r/therapists (142,000), and many others. We weren't trying to start a trend, and we never expected to go viral, the mods of r/newjersey said in a statement to Engadget. Not everyone will agree with our choice, but Reddit has always been a place where each community gets to decide these things individually. If our announcement has inspired discussions about the role social media is playing in our current times, we think that's a good thing. Many mods, in announcing their ban on X links have also cited the fact X has made it increasingly difficult for users to view posts if they arent logged in. Theres no doubt that over the past years Twitter has become a low-quality source: the login requirements, the flood of bots, the prioritization of content from paying users and promotion of sensationalist content, r/formula1s mods wrote in a post. But unlike with news sites in our source-rating system, for Twitter there wasnt really an alternative. The subreddit is instead encouraging members to share content from Bluesky, which doesnt require a login to view posts. The mods said they will allow screenshots of relevant posts by teams, drivers & F1 when the same content isnt available elsewhere.Moderators for r/antiwork, which has 2.9 million members, noted that their rules prohibit links and screenshots to X and all other social media sites, including Facebook, Instagram and even LinkedIn. We'd prefer for the message of antiwork to come organically from you, here, in OC form, but if it comes from a picture or post of something else, that catches hold, we want that, too, they wrote. Just not Twitter. Many other subreddits are considering similar measures. Mods of r/dnd (4 million members), r/baseball (2.8 million), r/AlanWake (80,000) and r/Xmen (270,000) are currently running polls among their members. Moderators in r/hockey (2.7 million), r/georgia (237,000) and r/popheads (2.8 million) have also shared that they are discussing a potential ban.Not all moderators have been receptive when such a ban has been raised. A mod in r/chess said that such a ban would pose a bit of a logistical problem for the community. The unfortunate reality is that Twitter is the source of a big portion of content on the subreddit, they wrote. A ban would thus require some rule changes. We're open to suggestions, but can't promise anything at the moment. Likewise, a moderator of r/fauxmoi, a subreddit dedicated to gossip, noted that we do prefer to still have the link so we can ensure that people are not submitting fake or doctored screenshots. While this is far from the first time that Redditors have joined together in a form of protest, its notable that so many are calling to remove a popular source for Reddit posts. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/social-media/dozens-of-subreddits-are-banning-x-links-from-their-communities-215441510.html?src=rss

  • Samsung teased a very slim phone called the Galaxy S25 Edge
    www.engadget.com
Samsung is making a thin version of the Galaxy S25. The Galaxy S25 Edge was teased at the end of the company's Unpacked event, and it does appear to be meaningfully thinner than the other phones Samsung launched today. There's very little to go off of in Samsung's tease. Voiceover describe the phone as "a culmination of our most innovative technology" and hypes up the device's apparent sleekness. Scrub through Samsung's livestream and you'll see components like a vapor chamber, cameras and metallic frames, but only the barest glimpse of the Galaxy S25 Edge's actual silhouette. At Samsung's live event in Korea, the new phone was actually on display. You can get a look at it in the embed below.Galaxy S25 Edgewww.... https://t.co/L1JBl8DCRD pic.twitter.com/zofJ3BLyGX (@chehonz201) January 22, 2025 Samsung didn't share any more details about when the Galaxy S25 Edge will come out at its event, but Bloomberg reports that the phone will launch "in the US and other markets by the middle of the year." The device will also "use some of the same technologies as the new Ultra model," just in a slimmer package. "Samsung hasnt settled on a price," Bloomberg writes, "but acknowledged it will be cheaper than the $1,299-and-up Ultra."The company won't be the only one trying to woo customers with thinness in 2025. Apple is also reportedly introducing the iPhone 17 "Air" later this year. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/mobile/smartphones/samsung-teased-a-very-slim-phone-called-the-galaxy-s25-edge-193553033.html?src=rss
