  • Boss BE10ACP Receiver review: Add CarPlay to your vehicle at a low entry-price
    appleinsider.com
CarPlay has come a long way since its release, and four years after install, the Boss BE10ACP remains an affordable gateway to integrating Apple technologies into your car.The Boss BE10ACP CarPlay Receiver head unit and the display. If you need to replace your car stereo, there are options on the market that provide support for Apple's CarPlay system. The problem in many cases is that you could end up needing to use a single-DIN head unit, a compact size that doesn't necessarily offer space for a display. The Boss BE10ACP is a single-DIN head unit with a large display. Rather than being a double-DIN unit that would keep the display within the main unit's dimensions, the display is mounted so it sticks out a short distance from the front of the unit itself. • The best indie games were playing right now
    www.theverge.com
Jan 10Andrew WebsterThe best mobile skateboarding game now has a New York sequel Image: SnowmanFor me, skateboarding has always been about getting into a flow state. Much like playing Tetris, Im at my best when Im skating almost subconsciously, not thinking and acting in the moment. Its not an easy zone to get into, and music has always been my shortcut. So the greatest compliment I can give to Skate City: New York is that Ive spent the past week fine-tuning the perfect playlist, all so that I can also perfect my runs in the game.New York is a sequel to the original Skate City; both are available through Apple Arcade, though the first game was eventually ported to consoles as well. It comes from Snowman, the studio behind the Alto series, and the shift to New York is a lot like the move from Altos Adventure to Altos Odyssey. Its not an entirely new experience but, rather, one that changes the setting and adds some seemingly small but very impactful tweaks.Read Article >

  • Marvel Snap is coming back to app stores soon, says developer
    www.theverge.com
Mobile card game Marvel Snap is coming back to app stores, starting with Google Play. Thats according to Developer Second Dinner, which announced yesterday it was starting the process of restoring the game to Googles Android app store at 6PM PT / 3PM ET that day. The developer said in another post it expects the game to return to both Googles and Apples app stores as early as next week. Marvel Snap was caught up in the TikTok outage last weekend because its original publisher, Nuverse, is owned by TikTok parent company ByteDance. The game came back online for players on Monday and Second Dinner said it planned to bring more services in-house and partner with a new publisher. As of now, Marvel Snap is still provided, operated, and managed by Nuverse, according to the privacy policy on the games website.RelatedAn admin of the Marvel Snap Discord server also announced a set of compensation packages for players affected by the outage. As seen in screenshots posted to Reddit, that includes in-game credits, tokens, and special variants for accounts that were created in the US or that showed US activity in the 30 days prior to the outage. Non-US players will also get a Global Gratitude Package with similar, though fewer, benefits. Other apps that went down last weekend, such as CapCut and Lemon8, have since come back online but still arent listed in the iOS and Android app stores. Although President Donald Trump has directed the US Attorney General not to enforce the US TikTok ban, its unclear whether he can shield Apple or Google from legal liability if they host the apps in defiance of the law.

  • Rolls-Royce lands record 9B nuclear submarine contract in UK
    thenextweb.com
Right now, theres at least one nuclear-power, nuclear-armed submarine stealthily patrolling the waters off the UK. The sub is powered by a nuclear reactor, so it can cruise undetected for over 20 years without refuelling. Oh, and its also armed with eight nuclear warheads each six times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.Since 1969, the Royal Navy has kept at least one of these fission-powered submarines in the water at all times. The vessels are the backbone of Britains nuclear deterrent and send a giant warning to other nations who might get funny ideas.Rolls-Royce today announced that it has secured a whopping 9bn contract to maintain and upgrade the Navys submarine nuclear reactors. Under the deal, the British engineering firm will also build reactors for the UKs new class of nuclear-powered subs. The Royal Navys submarine fleet is split between Astute-class attack submarines (SSNs) and Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs). The Astute-class are nuclear-powered but conventionally armed. Six of seven planned vessels are already operational. The Navy eventually plans to replace the Astutes with SSN-AUKUS submarines, the result of a collaboration with the US and Australia.Limited tickets available - Book NowMeanwhile, the Vanguard class, which first entered service in 1994, forms the backbone of the UKs nuclear deterrent, carrying Trident II D5 nuclear missiles. The Navy plans to replace the Vanguards with the Dreadnought-class SSBNs in the early 2030s.Under the so-called Unity contract, Rolls-Royce will design, manufacture, and support the new subs pressurised water reactors (PWRs). These machines use uranium to generate heat, turning water into steam that spins a turbine to generate electricity. The steam then cools, and the process repeats. The Unity deal is the largest Ministry of Defence deal Rolls-Royce has landed in its 121-year history. Predictably, the UK government is celebrating the new contract as a win for national security and job creation.National security is a foundation of our governments plan for change, and this is a clear demonstration of our commitment to the UKs nuclear deterrent, which is our ultimate insurance policy in a more dangerous world, said the defence secretary, John Healey. The contract is expected to create more than 1,000 UK jobs and safeguard 4,000 other roles. • Three major Siri upgrades are coming very soon, heres what they are
    9to5mac.com
Apple released the release candidate builds of iOS 18.3 earlier this week, meaning that were just days away from seeing that update ship to the public. That also means iOS 18.4 beta is just around the corner, which is widely expected to include some of the big Siri improvements with Apple Intelligence. Heres what were expecting with Siri in iOS 18.4.Previous Siri improvements in iOS 18While there have been many Siri improvements so far in iOS 18, the intelligent features havent yet shipped. Heres whats new so far:Faster responses and better language processing, allowing you to make mistakes in your speech and still be understoodAll new design, with a cleaner animation and more minimal interfaceAbility to type to Siri, allowing you to ask questions without speaking out loudApple product knowledge, with the ability to provide low-level tech support to usersChatGPT integration, allowing more complex real-world questions to be answeredThese are all great improvements, but this is just the beginning, and Apple still has more in store for Siri.Whats coming soon in iOS 18.4iOS 18.4, provided there arent any last minute delays, will include some of Apples bigger promises for Apple Intelligence and Siri. With these features, Siri will become truly intelligent, presuming Apple lives up to its promises.Therell be three major Siri upgrades in iOS 18.4: personal context, on screen awareness, and the ability to take action in apps. Heres how Apple describes each of these features:Personal context:Awareness of yourpersonal contextenables Siri to help you in ways that are unique to you. Cant remember if a friend shared that recipe with you in a note, a text, or an email? Need your passport number while booking a flight? Siri can use its knowledge of the information on your device to help find what youre looking for, without compromising your privacy.On-screen awareness:AppleIntelligence empowers Siri withonscreen awareness, so it can understand and take action with things on your screen. If a friend texts you their new address, you can say Add this address to their contact card, and Siri will take care of it.Taking action in apps:Seamlesslytake action in and across appswith Siri. You can make a request like Send the email I drafted to April and Lilly and Siri knows which email youre referencing and which app its in. And Siri can take actions across apps, so after you ask Siri to enhance a photo for you by saying Make this photo pop, you can ask Siri to drop it in a specific note in the Notes app without lifting a finger. With these three features, Siri will finally be able to live up to the promise of being your personal assistant. Third party apps will also be able to support these abilities, and many apps have been rolling out support for Siri integration since iOS 18 debuted in September.Siri upgrades in the futureWhile not officially announced, iOS 19 is rumored to include another large upgrade to Siri, allowing users to be more conversational with the assistant, similar to a chatbot like ChatGPT. Bloomberg reports that this feature wont release until spring 2026, meaning its still around a year away.According to the report, LLM Siri will be able to allow for back-and-forth conversations, and handle more sophisticated requests in a quicker fashion.Wrap upWhile Im not a huge fan of Apple unveiling software features over 9 months before theyll release to the public, I cant say this wasnt worth the wait. If Apples Siri revamp lives up to its promises, it will be rather remarkable.iOS 18.4 beta will likely be available in the coming weeks, with a public release anticipated sometime in the spring, likely around April. What do you think about the iOS 18.4 Siri upgrades? • iPadOS features you are not using, but should
    9to5mac.com
If you have read or watched any of my content over the last few years, you might have realized that my iPad Pro is my main computer. Yes, I have a Mac Mini, but when it comes to getting actual work done, I always gravitate towards my iPad (I am currently writing this on my iPad). Something about the combination of gorgeous hardware and single app optimization nature of the software really makes the iPad a joy to use. With the release of iPadOS 18 we got an abundance of new features that has helped me double and triple down on this sentiment. We all know the headlining features, but I want to share a few other features that not many people know about. Lets get into it!Be sure to check out my video below, where I go in-depth with the features I mention here and much more.1. Built-in unit converter With iPadOS 18, Apple finally gave the iPad a dedicated calculator app. The biggest differentiator came with all the new Math Notes features. But one thing that was added to the calculator app is that it now has a build in converter. It can converter almost any value. If you need to go from centimeters to feet, Pascals to Bar, or even US dollars to Rupees. This is all done on a device, too, so if you are in an area with no data, you will still have full access to this, and I love it. We all know about these Apple EcosystemMagic Moments, which aremoments where things just work. For example, you can unlock your Mac with your Apple Watch or copy and post across devices. One of the best ones is being able to share your wifi with a guest in your home who has another iOS device. They just tap on your home Wi-Fi name, and then you can share access to it from your device. But of course this only happens with iOS devices. What if you have a guest with an Android phone? Do they have to physically type your crazy wifi password? No, they dont! The new Passwords app allows you to share your wifi by generating a QR code! Heres howGo to the Passwords appTap on WifiTap on your home networkTap show QR codeand then have the guest scan that codeBoom, they are in!3. Formatting drives on iPadOS Now, this was huge for me. One key aspect of the Files app that was holding it back was the inability to format drives or SD cards. Every other file system has been able to do this for years. Well it is now something that you can do on iPadOS via the files app. Its very easy:Plug SSD into iPadLong press on the drive in the files appTap erase (dont worry it wont just erase)A menu opens upTap which format you would like to useTap erase You are now formatted and erased! The home screen also got a great redesign and overhaul in terms of the ability to customize app sizes, colors and even tint. But one new option that came in was the ability to go from app icon to widget without going into customization mode. You can now long press on any app, and if it has a widget, you can transform it into a widget right there. This is one of those features that you didnt understand how useful it was until you found the use case. Safari introduced a new feature that allows you to remove entire sections of a web page. It can be an ad, a certain portion of a webpage, text, or pretty much anything. It will hide the object and keep it that way until you turn the mode off. Most people think of this and say this is nice to remove some ads from sites. But I found my perfect use case. I like to use Google Sheets on my iPad a lot. But I dont like the Google Sheets app. I prefer to use the web version of Google Sheets. The only way to do this is to make sure you have deleted the Google Sheets app. Otherwise, it will always auto-launch the app. So that is how you get to the web version. But when you use the web version of Google Sheets, you are constantly prompted to download the app with a banner at the bottom that takes up an annoying amount of screen real estate. So now I just tap it away with this new feature! Heere is how to do it!Go to any webpage in Safaritap the options menu in the URL barTap Hide Distracting ItemsTap on the section you want to hideTap hideThen it will just disappearAs long as you see the small blue eye icon that is crossed through, that means that something is hidden and it that will persist even if you leave the page and come back!Other iPadOS 18 tipsThese were just a few of the features and tips I discussed in my video. I highly recommend watching it because I discuss 15 more features that people will be happy to know about. But what do you think? Have you used these features? Did you know they existed? Lets discuss some of your favorite features below!Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. • Trump Admin Announces Plans to Build Database of Migrant DNA
    futurism.com
Trump is ringing in his second term with a barrage of executive orders and many are laying the groundwork for a massive genetic surveillance campaign targeting migrants. That's according to analysis by award-winning National Security journalist Spencer Ackerman, who writes that "along with the attorney general, the secretary of homeland security will 'fulfill the requirements of the DNA Fingerprint Act of 2005,' according to the 'Securing Our Borders' executive order," referencing one of the numerous presidential actions targeting migrants signed by Trump on his first day back."In other words," Ackerman continues, "[the] DHS and the Justice Department will create and manage a migrant DNA database."Many crucial questions remain: how that database will look, who will have access to it, what data will be collected, and from whom. After all, many actual American citizens lack documentation of their legal status, like the poor and homeless will their DNA be swept up in wanton collection efforts that trample the privacy rights of citizens and non-citizens alike? With tech moguls lining up to pitch Trump on dystopian border tech, we can be sure the surveillance effort won't come cheap for American taxpayers. It'll also almost certainly come with new cruelty. In addition to inevitable family separations, a rise in lost children, heightened processing time due to missed court hearings, documented and undocumented residents alike are going to be contending with aggressive new efforts at domestic surveillance."[The] DHS is empowered to use 'any available technologies and procedures' to adjudicate migrants' 'claimed familiar relationships' with people in the United States," Ackerman's analysis warns. "So this is designed to be not only vastly intrusive beyond the border, but a windfall opportunity for, say, artificial intelligence and biometrics firms."Ackerman who was among the Guardian team to win the 2014 Pulitzer for public service journalism for reporting on the NSA spying debacle has noticed the rhetoric used in Trump's orders mirrors vague national security directives from the days of the War on Terror. For example, the "Protecting the American People Against Invasion" order claims that "many of these aliens unlawfully within the United States present significant threats to national security and public safety, committing vile and heinous acts against innocent Americans.""Others are engaged in hostile activities," the mandate continues, "including espionage, economic espionage, and preparations for terror-related activities."To Ackerman, that last bit is striking, because in this context, "terror-related activities" have not been defined. Vaguely worded presidential decrees like this are crucial in that they allow agencies like the NSA or the DHS to operate with impunity building the American surveillance state between the ink.Though their power is increasing under Trump, these surveillance mechanisms are nothing new. Ackerman notes that the measure to harvest migrant DNA seems "reminiscent of the biometrics database created under the Bush administration for Muslim travelers known as NSEERS," a similarly troubling moment in American history which some of Trump's executive orders are predicated on.More recently, Biden's approach to the immigration crisis was also a decidedly invasive one, thanks in part to the Customs and Border Patrol's CBP One app which rolled out in October of 2020. In 2023, that app got a controversial update: a Visa-lottery system for hopeful migrants to schedule meetings for processing into the United States. That app came with a host of privacy concerns, not least of which was the harvesting of applicant biometric and geolocation data for case processing.Rather than delete that data after an individual has been processed, as the TSA claims it does, the DHS collects it into two federal databases the Traveler Verification SystemandAutomated Targeting System. CBP One has since been shut down by Trump, canceling thousands of applicant's appointments and stranding them at the border, but the personal data its collected is likely still being held by the federal government. It's likewise been reported that, as of 2020, the DHS has already captured data from over 1.5 million immigrants crossing the border in its Combined DNA Index System. That DNA harvesting program is laundered as a law enforcement index though the collection includes hundreds of thousands of migrants who have only ever been administratively detained, and have never been charged with a crime. Many immigrants report not being informed of the DNA collection, believing DNA swabs to be medical procedures, despite the DHS' internal guidelines mandating disclosure. While Trump isn't the only electected official pushing to harvest the DNA of every incoming immigrant, his influence will certainly have the most impact as his nominees shape their agencies to his dystopian image.More on mass surveillance:Billionaire Drools That "Citizens Will Be on Their Best Behavior" Under Constant AI SurveillanceShare This Article
