• Google To Let Users Turn Off Divisive Google Photos Feature
    www.forbes.com
Google is prepping a way to turn off a brand new Google Photos feature.SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty ImagesGoogle is testing a way to speed up photo sharing in Google Photos by allowing you to skip one of its latest new features.According to a report from app teardown specialist Assemble Debug, Google is considering backtracking somewhat on a significant change it recently made to how single images are shared in Google Photos before many of us have even seen it.Google has been experimenting with ways to help users make their photos look their best when sharing them by providing simple one-tap enhancements. However, users could soon be able to turn this feature off to make sharing quicker. Some Google Photos users recently reported seeing a new Quick Edit feature when sharing photos one at a time. If you also have the Quick Edit feature available (most users dont have it yet), it will pop up at the beginning of the sharing process, prompting you to crop and enhance the image before you send it.Once in Quick Edit mode, you can tap the Enhanced button to apply Googles suggested edits automatically or opt to keep the original version before cropping your picture with the regular Google Photos cropping tool. Quick Edit appears to be a refined version of the unreleased Enhance Photo feature discovered in an earlier version of the Google Photos app.MORE FOR YOUGoogle Photos Quick Edit An Annoyance To SomeUnfortunately, not everyone is happy with the feature as it stands. As you can see in this Reddit thread, where one annoyed user asks, Can you turn off Quick Edit before sharing? This issue is that, for many, Quick Edit is simply an unnecessary step that gets in the way every time they share a photo. Those who care enough to edit their photos will often do so before they decide to share them and dont want to be prompted to re-edit them every time. In many cases, users will share images with an app such as Instagram, which automatically offers its own editing and cropping tools, effectively prompting them to edit each picture twice. Similarly, less technically minded users may feel confused or intimidated when confronted with new and unexpected editing controls.Google Photos Quick Edit How To Turn It OffGoogle is now working to resolve this issue. According to Android Authority, Google has begun testing a new pop-up button labeled Turn off quick edit that will allow users to permanently skip the Quick Edit function and return Google Photos sharing to how it used to work. For those who want to keep Quick Edit turned on, Google is also testing a new, streamlined cropping tool built into Quick Edit rather than relying on the regular Google Photos cropping tool. For now, quick Edit appears to be available only to selected users while Google fine-tunes its operation. Thankfully, it looks like it will improve somewhat before it is rolled out to a wider audience. Lets hope Google Photos strikes the right balance between convenience and functionality before that happens.Follow @paul_monckton on Instagram.

Find the links between the words to win today's game of Connections.gettyLooking for Fridays Connections hints and answers instead? You can find them here:Hey, everyone! I hope youre making the most of this weekend. When things arent going all that great (or even sometimes when they are), there are a couple of things I say to my partner:This too shall pass.Itll all be all right in the end. If its not all right, its not the end.I recently stumbled back upon the thing from which I cribbed these (I hadnt heard of this too shall pass before then). Almost exactly five years ago, I heard them discussed in a radio interview with Tom Hanks. You can listen to that segment here at 12:32:Ive always been someone who gives equal weight to praise and criticism. But to hear the wonderful Hanks crystallize that mindset so succinctly and so perfectly has really stuck with me. I hope you find it helpful too.MORE FOR YOUBefore we get going, Ive started a discussion group for Connections and this column on Discord. You can chat about each game (and other topics) with me and other folks. Im always interested to find out how other people approach the game, so join us! Its fun.Its also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare(!) occasions that I mess something up.Todays NYT Connections hints and answers for Sunday, January 26, are coming right up.How To Play ConnectionsConnections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT website or Games app.Youre presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part.Theres only one solution for each puzzle, and youll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them. Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay.Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and youre incorrect, youll lose a life. If youre close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that youre one word away from getting it right, but youll still need to figure out which one to swap.If you make four mistakes, its game over. Lets make sure that doesnt happen with the help of some hints, and, if youre really struggling, todays Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, its easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats. If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publications Connections archive. This includes every previous game of Connections, so you can go back and play any of those that you have missed.Aside from the first 60 games or so, you should be able to find my hints for each grid via Google if you need them! Just click here and add the date of the game for which you need clues or the answers to the search query. What Are Todays Connections Hints?Scroll slowly! Dont scroll any further down the page until youre ready to find out todays Connections answers. This is your final warning!Todays Connections answers are...Yellow group ways to get food (FARM, FISH, GATHER, HUNT)Green group keep apart (CLOISTER, SECLUDE, SEPARATE, SILO)Blue group parts of a big rig (AXLES, HITCH, TRACTOR, TRAILER)Purple group dance events plus a letter (BALLY, DISCOG, PROMO, RAVEN)My 14-game overall win streak now includes 11 straight perfect games. What the heck is going on? I feel like I'm starting to see the Matrix in front of me when I play Connections. Here's how I fared:I clocked right away that there was probably some kind of wordplay going on with DISCOG and BALLY. As such, they were likely members of the purple group. But instead of trying to figure that out (I was thinking of the former more in terms of "discography" anyway) to try and get a reverse rainbow, I turned my attention elsewhere. The greens jumped out at me for the most part. Even though I wasn't super certain about the meaning of CLOISTER and there was a potential group of farm-related words including SILO, I decided to go for it and was right. The yellows were then easier to put together. With just two groups left, it wasn't too difficult to find the blues. That left the purples for a win. I didn't figure out the connection there, but hey, it's the weekend and I shouldn't have to, like, think if I don't want to.Thats all there is to it for todays Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the solution for Mondays game if you need them.P.S. Over in our Discord group, Bear<3 brought a game called Timeguessr to my attention. It's a fun spin on Geoguesser in that you try to find the location where a photo often one of a notable historical event was taken. You have to try to guess the year in which it was snapped too.I've been watching way, way too much of Geoguesser YouTubers like Rainbolt instantly pinpointing certain locations anywhere in the world. I swear that guy has every blade of grass on the planet mapped out in his head.Being a newsman (to use an antiquated term), the historical aspect of Timeguessr speaks to me. In a recent daily game, I was particularly pleased about getting the location of a picture of Manuel Neuer and Germany fans almost spot on, as well as the year it was taken just after Germany won the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro in 2014.It's a fun game, I promise. And hey, if enough people get into it, we could even set up a little space to discuss the daily challenge in the Discord group.Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Call someone you love!If youre so inclined, please do follow my blog for more coverage of Connections and other word games and even some video game news, insights and analysis. It helps me out a lot! • How astronauts stay fit and healthy in space
    www.digitaltrends.com
Space is not an easy environment to live in. Going to space and living in microgravity for extended periods has a range of effects on the body, from space sickness similar to motion sickness, to deteriorating eye sight, to fluids pooling in the upper half of the body. And though weightlessness allows astronauts to spin, rotate, and float through the air, it has a downside. Without the force of gravity to fight against, muscles of the body begin to deteriorate as they arent used regularly. To work against this loss of muscle and bone mass, astronauts have to exercise for up to an hour every day. And scientific investigation into how to protect human health in space is one of the key goals of work on the International Space Station, with a range of experiments being performed there to assess health and wellbeing in space.CSA astronaut David Saint-Jacques wears the Bio-Monitor health sensor shirt and headband. NASAOne part of that is developing systems for monitoring health that arent intrusive when astronauts have work to do. The Bio-Monitor system, developed by the Canadian Space Agency, is a smart shirt with sensors embedded within it which can measure factors like pulse, blood pressure, breathing rate, and skin temperature. Theres also a headband for monitoring blood oxygen levels. It is currently being tested on the ISS, with the hope that it can be used not only for astronauts but also on Earth for medical purposes, sports research, and telemedicine in the future.Recommended VideosAnother investigation from the European Space Agency, called Myotones, is a small device for measuring muscle stiffness. This can be used to check on the efficiency of astronaut exercise programs, by making sure that there arent any important muscles which are being missed and which could be degrading.CSA astronaut David Saint-Jacques conducts a session for VECTION. NASAIt isnt just physical issues which can affect astronauts though. Cognitive functioning and sensory perception can also be impacted by spaceflight, so these need to be monitored too. This is done using systems like tests for fine motor control, measured through simulated flying or driving challenges. A simulated driving task, for example, requires people to be able to recognize obstacles and respond to them in the right spatial and temporal way, and to multitask. Performing a simulated task before doing an actual driving task like piloting a rover might also help astronauts do better on the actual task. Please enable Javascript to view this contentThen there are measured like VECTION, which investigates how being in microgravity affects peoples perception of motion. On Earth we can use cues from our vestibular system to help gauge where an object is, but astronauts have to adapt to a lack of gravity. This experiment uses head mounted googles to test whether astronauts can accurately gauge factors like the height of an object, even without gravity cues.Editors Recommendations

  • AMD Ryzen Z2 Go vs. Z1 Extreme: a handheld head-to-head
    www.digitaltrends.com
Jacob Roach / Digital TrendsTable of ContentsTable of ContentsPricing and availabilitySpecificationsPerformanceZ1 Extreme is better, but is it worth it?AMDs Ryzen Z-series portable gaming processors have been some of the most exciting chips AMDs released in recent years. They offer incredible CPU and GPU performance on a single die, with great efficiency, making it possible for higher performance portable gaming systems that can play at higher detail and frame rates. AMDs second-generation Z2 portable processors debuted in 2025 and will form a core component in many portable gaming systems this year, like the Lenovo Legion Go S.But often these portable systems offer last-generation Z chips designs, too, raising the question, which is better? Two chips that will go head to head early this year are the Z2 Go and Z1 Extreme, so lets see how they stack up, to see which might be the better option.Recommended VideosWhen AMD launched the Z1 series of processors in 2023, their gaming performance was already impressive. AMDPricing for these individual processors is redundant, since you wont be buying them by themselves, but pricing per device is going to vary dramatically by manufacturer. In the case of the Lenovo Legion Go, where both chips will be an option eventually, the Z1 Extreme version is available now, with an $800 price tag and Windows 11 installed.Get your weekly teardown of the tech behind PC gaming In May, Lenovo will launch the Legion Go S with Steam OS as an alternative, with the option of the Z2 Go and more modest companion hardware such as less memory and onboard storage. Prices there, will start at $500.AMD Ryzen Z1 ExtremeAMD Ryzen Z2 GoArchitectureZen 4Zen 3Cores/Threads8/164/8Boost clock5.1GHzUp to 4.3GHzGPU12 core RDNA 312 core RDNA2TDP9-30W15-30WOn paper, the Z1 Extreme shows much more capable internals than the Z2 Go. Despite the latter being the newer processor in terms of release availability, the Z1 Extreme is built on a newer architecture, with a new graphics core design, more cores, and a higher clock speed. Its the more expensive chip, in the more expensive version of the device, so wed expect it to perform better. How much better? That remains to be seen.Luke Larsen / Digital TrendsThe specific performance of any hardware in any portable device is very dependent on the overall design. Available power and cooling play a huge role in how fast a processor can run at, and the operating system plays a big part too, so judging how these CPUs will square off without comparable testing using the same devices, is tricky. However, it is possible to make some estimations by comparing how these chips perform in different devices. While we havent had a chance to do this testing ourselves, others have managed to run the Lenovo Legion Go S running the Z2 Go versus the Asus Rog Ally X, running the Z1 Extreme. At a fixed 20W TDP, the chips performed comparably well in demanding games, managing over 40 FPS in Cyberpunk at 1080p low, with FSR enabled. However, when we consider all of the tests conducted in the above video, the Z1 Extreme delivers 10% higher frame rates across most games.Although this does give a single-source win to the Z1 Extreme, its also a real success story for the Z2 Go. Despite using an older Zen 3 architecture, with fewer cores, and limited to a 4.3GHz boost clock, its able to leverage its high-core GPU to great effect almost keeping up with the higher-power, more expensive alternative. It suggests that the Legion Go S with the Z2 Go chip could be a potent combination and has the potential to undercut the Steam Deck as the better budget handheld gaming solution in early 2025.While the Z1 Extreme version is faster, its also more expensive, pushing it into competition with higher-end handheld gaming systems like the aforementioned Ally X, not to mention new competition coming this year.Well need to see head to head testing of the different versions of the Legion Go S and any other handheld gaming systems with multiple chip options to know for sure how these processors compare head to head. However, for now, it seems likely that the Z1 Extreme will be the fastest of the two CPUs, but just not by as much as we might have expected. The margins for performance, pricing, and efficiency are extremely tight on portable gaming devices, so if the Z2 Go can offer near-enough performance to the Z1 Extreme at a much more affordable price, with comparable battery life, for many that will make it the no-brainer choice. For now, though your options are limited. The Z1 Extreme version of the Legion Go S is ready to game on right now. The wait for something cheaper might be worth it for you, but if not, the Z1 Extreme is already the more capable option; albeit at a higher price tag.Editors Recommendations

  • Trump tells a crowd in Las Vegas he is working with Congress on a bill to exclude tips from federal taxes
    www.businessinsider.com
President Donald Trump stopped in Las Vegas on Saturday. He discussed his proposal to exclude workers' tips from federal taxes.Trump said he will work with Congress to push forward legislation.President Donald Trump stopped in Las Vegas on Saturday to share details about his administration's plan to exclude workers' tips from federal taxes. The president first announced his proposal last June during a campaign rally, also in Nevada, where a significant portion of the workforce is in the hospitality industry and where he scored a major victory in November.Trump would need approval for the tax change from Congress, where Republicans hold majorities in both chambers.Former Vice President Kamala Harris, the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee, promoted a similar idea during her campaign. While in Las Vegas, Trump said he'd work with members of Congress "in the coming weeks" to ensure a bill reaches his desk."No tax on tips!" Trump said as a crowd of supporters cheered nearby. During the speech, Trump said his administration would also raise worker wages, but did not share additional details.During his speech, Trump welcomed American Hotel and Lodging Association CEO and President Rosanna Maietta onstage, where she spoke about the proposal's potential impact on the service industry."I am here to tell you that the American dream is alive and well in the hotel industry today," she said. She referenced the tax bill Trump promoted in 2017 during his first administration. "The 'no tax on tips' builds on that momentum," Maietta said. "So, we are so excited to support you in that effort."She added that her organization would urge Congress to pass Trump's proposal. In June, however, Trump's remarks drew criticism from the Culinary Workers Union, which includes Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and Bartenders Union Local 165. The union represents 60,000 workers in the Las Vegas and Reno areas."For decades, the Culinary Union has fought for tipped workers' rights and against unfair taxation," Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge said in a statement at the time. "Relief is definitely needed for tip earners, but Nevada workers are smart enough to know the difference between real solutions and wild campaign promises from a convicted felon." President Trump said he'll work with members of Congress to ensure the bill reaches his desk. Mandel NGAN/AFP/Getty Images In a statement to Business Insider on Saturday, Pappageorge said, "The Culinary Union welcomes plans to end taxes on tips, but it must not end there.""Eliminating taxes on tips and ending the $2.13 sub-minimum wage that is the reality in too many states across the country will uplift millions of hospitality workers," he said. "Taking on both issues is critical to ensuring one job is enough for workers to support their families."The statement urged Republicans to reach across the aisle and work with Democrats to find solutions."Republicans have made promises to lower the cost of living for Americans. Delivering on those commitments must start with meaningful action, and they must work with Democrats to raise the sub-minimum wage, eliminate taxes on tips, and address corporate greed driving up prices on essential goods like food, gas, and housing," Pappageorge added. "It's time for Congress to act now to deliver real solutions for working families."Some experts who track the industry earlier told Business Insider that eliminating federal taxes on tips could have unintended negative consequences, like encouraging employers to lower wages to avoid taxes.Martha Gimbel, the executive director of Yale University's Budget Lab, told BI that a new system would create "an incentive for employers to try to get more of their workers' compensation in the form of tips."Gimbel said the proposal could let business owners shift the onus for employee salaries onto customers and claim tax breaks through lower payroll and Social Security fees.Representatives for the White House did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.Trump's speech in Nevada comes one day after he visited California to address the wildfires that have devastated parts of Los Angeles County and elsewhere. While at a roundtable with local California officials, the president said he would help fund relief efforts but did not detail how much federal aid California could receive.Trump also said he would implement an executive order to direct more water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to Southern California and Central Valley. On Friday, Trump also visited North Carolina, where some parts of the state are still recovering from the impacts of Hurricane Helene.Trump on Friday also floated overhauling or eliminating the Federal Emergency Management Agency, calling it a "big disappointment."The president said his administration was eyeing mechanisms for potentially empowering governors when it comes to disaster aid.

  • Stress dreaming about work? Here's what your dreams might mean.
    www.businessinsider.com
Over three-fifths of US workers have nightmares about work.Common nightmares include being late to work, job loss, and romantic dreams about coworkers.Dreams are often a reflection of the inner self, therapists say.For many people, work extends well beyond the standard 9-to-5. The pressure from their jobs can disrupt sleep, leading to restless nights and stressful dreams. In a survey of 1,750 working adults in the US conducted by Each Night, a sleep resource platform, more than three-fifths of workers reported having a nightmare about their jobs. The most common workplace nightmare is being late to work, according to an analysis of global search data conducted by the job search platform JobLeads. Losing your job, getting a new job, and colleague romances were also commonly reported dreams.Annie Wright, a psychotherapist who operates boutique trauma therapy centers in California and Florida, told Business Insider that dreams are worth analyzing. The fear of being late to work can signify a sense of uncertainty, she said. "It doesn't terribly surprise me that that's showing up because, you know, we have that classic dream in college and high school of being late for a test," she said.Through the lens of gestalt psychotherapy a therapeutic approach that focuses on understanding a person's present experience every element of a dream, from the setting to the people, places, and objects, can be viewed as a reflection of the dreamer's inner self.Wright offered a hypothetical workplace dream in which the dreamer sees their boss, closest colleague, and a challenging client. The boss is yelling at the colleague about their interactions with the client.Wright said she would ask the dreamer to describe the qualities they associate with their boss. "Critical, demanding, and hostile," they might say, she said. Then, they would describe their colleague. "Supportive, kind, but incompetent sometimes," she said. She would ask the dreamer to think about all these aspects within their self."What does it say that the critical, angry part of you is attacking the, you know, supportive but kind part of you," she said. Perhaps the person would realize that the dream was about something else entirely."I cannot turn off this critical voice about my inability to get pregnant," she said, as an example. "When we unfold it from that lens, it can become less about the workplace itself or the workplace figure itself and more about what those different parts symbolized by the workplace or workplace figures represent."Stressful dreams often reflect a person's sense of vulnerability in the wider world, she said. Whether it's the workplace or the middle school hallway the most common setting for a stress dream the setting of a dream is like a subject that our mental state seeks out. "In other words, the state of vulnerability seeks that out and gloms on to it," she said. Here's a closer look at the top most searched workplace stress dreams, according to JobLeads data. Being late for work is the most searched dream; it can signify a sense of uncertainty in other parts of your life. JobLeads

  • Insomniac Games Wants to Join PlayStations Adaptation Party
    gizmodo.com
Nobody works harder to franchise out its stuff quite like Sony. After Spider-Mans supporting cast repeatedly proved to be a live-action bust, the companys now turning to adapting PlayStation games to TV and the big screen. From current hits like HorizonandHelldiversto the now-shelved Gravity RushandDays Gone, it seems anythings viable to be adapted. Insomniac Games, the studio behindRatchet & Clankand the recentSpider-Mantitles, is hoping to jump on that trend. In a recent Variety interview, future co-head Ryan Schneiderwhos set to lead alongside Chad Durzen and Jen Huang when current CEO/founder Ted Price leaves in Marchsaid there was interest in bringing the studios games to TV and film. The developer had an early start with the RatchetCG movie from 2016, which was also accompanied by a PlayStation 4 remake of the original game that integrated plot points and scenes from the movie. The Ratchet movie was such a commercial and critical disappointment at the time, it also junked plans for a potential Sly Coopermovie, and helped ice the entire franchise until 2021s Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Still, Schneider thinks its as good a time as any to give another go at adapting one of its properties, and the action-shooter series in particular. It basically has to be this one franchise, since Sony and Marvel will keep making Spider-Man media until the end of existence, and other Insomniac franchises like ResistanceorSunset Overdrivehave been shelved for some time, and the studio doesnt currently seem interested in bringing them back. (They should!) Right now, Sonys got its hands full with adapting the franchises mentioned above, including Last of Us second season on HBO in April. Meanwhile, Insomniacs primarily at work on Marvels Wolverine, which Dezern said hed love to talk about, but only when the times right. We have to be like Logan today, and remain very stoic until its time to pop the claws down the road, he teased to Variety. As much as were as much as we have pent up excitement, we got to hold on to it. Want more io9 news?
