• Teenage Engineering design language gives this CD player concept a fresh new look
    www.yankodesign.com
It isnt just vinyl thats making a comeback. Although theyre much younger and havent exactly vanished from the market, audio CDs have been easily supplanted by streaming services and MP3s. There are plenty that still prefer to hold physical media that really emphasizes their ownership of the product, so CD players have never really become as rare as record players before this recent retro revolution. They have, however, been rather uninspiring and unaesthetic, still bearing the technology-centric design from the 90s. Its definitely high time to give this device a makeover, but theres no need to also ditch the CD players identity. Taking a cue from Teenage Engineerings design book, this concept gives the audio device an aesthetic that is modern, clean, and clearly industrial.Designers: Jake Wegesin (Ambient Press), Pierrick Pichaureaux (Pich.Studio)Although Teenage Engineerings products serve a rather niche market of audio synthesizers and other music-related devices, the outfits design language has inspired many to follow suit and give their products a minimalist industrial style. That design language involves the use of geometric shapes, sharp edges and angles, and a monochromatic color scheme, often in silver, with a few orange highlights here and there. It beautifully bridges the gap between a more technical treatment and a clean, modern look that can be applied to almost any product today.A CD player isnt that far from Teenage Engineerings core product line, so this concept doesnt stray far either. Instead of the usual plastic youd see on its kind, you get a metallic square block that has very little extraneous details on any side. Even the presence of a CD bay is only indicated by a very thin line circling around the center of the box. Its a bit deceptive, however, as the lid is actually the whole top surface rather than that broken circle. The controls of the CD player almost disappear into the body of the box as well, protruding only so slightly from the edges. The design of what seems to be the volume control is pretty ingenious, a knob that hides in one of the rounded corners of the player. Curiously, the only thing that literally sticks out is the headphone jack, here encased in a small knurled cylinder jutting out from the bottom of the box. Whether it has any tactile functionality isnt clear, but it would be such a waste since its very design seems begging to be pulled or twisted. The predominantly brushed silver body of the CD-P1 concept is broken only by a few orange accents, such as the carrying trap and the groove on the volume knob to indicate its position. Flip the box over, however, and you are met with a felt-like orange material that gives both a visual contrast as well as a tactile one. The minimalist style of this design concept probably wont fit everyones tastes, but its definitely a breath of fresh air for a product whose dominant designs seem to go back decades as well. The post Teenage Engineering design language gives this CD player concept a fresh new look first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Discover Why 'The Raven,' Edgar Allan Poe's Narrative Poem About a Distraught Lover and a Talking Bird, Remains an American Classic
    www.smithsonianmag.com
Despite gaining national renown after The Raven was published in 1845, Edgar Allan Poe never enjoyed great financial success. Public domain via Wikimedia CommonsWhen the New York Evening Mirror published Edgar Allan Poes poem The Raven on January 29, 1845, it catapulted both the work and its author to instant fame.Poe, known for his macabre and Gothic style, was no stranger to audiences. Hed already penned and published short stories like The Murders in the Rue Morgue (1841) and The Black Cat (1843). Still, it was this stylized and rhythmic ballad of 18 six-line stanzas that most resonated with readers, making Poe a household name. The Raven tells the tale of a grieving narrator mourning the death of his lover, Lenore. On a particularly dreary December night, he hears a raven tapping at his window. When the narrator opens the window, in steps the raven, perching itself on his bust of Pallas Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom. There it stands, constantly repeating the word Nevermore, while driving the narrator into madness. The Raven | Animation | Edgar Allan PoeWatch on Poe based the rhythm and meter of The Raven on Elizabeth Barrett Brownings poem Lady Geraldines Courtship, using a poetic form known as trochaic octameter. This particular meter of verse is known for having eight feet per line, with each foot a trocheeone stressed syllable followed by one unstressed syllable. Poe used the form to create a sense of forward motion in his work. He also used alliteration, internal rhyme and repetition to draw in readers, lending the piece a dark and melancholic tone. While Poe originally envisioned a parrot as his talking bird, he later decided on a raven, since the large black bird is often associated with death. He originally submitted The Raven to his former employer, George Rex Graham of Philadelphias Grahams magazine, but the publisher and editor passed on it. Poe sold it to the Evening Mirror instead, where it was printed with the authors own byline, and Poe later sold it to the American Review, where it was printed under the pseudonym Quarles. In the following weeks and months, The Raven appeared in multiple periodicals and anthologies, reaching a wide range of readers. Although fellow writers like Margaret Fuller and William Gilmore Simms praised the piece, others, such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and William Butler Yeats, had fewif anypositive things to say about it. An illustration of "The Raven" by douard Manet Public domain via Wikimedia CommonsStill, the poem has influenced many modern works, including Vladimir Nabokovs 1955 novel, Lolita, and Bernard Malamuds 1963 allegorical short story, The Jewbird. Its also led to parodies like Marmaduke Mar-Rhymes The Pole-Cat (1846), political satires and even sequels. The poem also inspired an unlikely namesake: the Baltimore Ravens. The NFL football teams name honors Poe, who spent the early part of his career in Baltimore, died there and is buried there.Despite gaining national renown after The Raven was published in 1845, Poe never enjoyed much success financially. He died in 1849 at the age of 40. While the exact cause of his death remains a mystery, The Raven lives on as one of the authors most influential worksnot to mention one of the most famous poems ever written.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.

  • Dino Crisis launches on PC as GOG adds new tool to bring back more classics
    www.theverge.com
A survival horror classic is getting a new life on PC and it might be the first of many. PC games shop GOG announced the release of Dino Crisis and its sequel, which are both available starting today. Alongside the launch, the service also announced a new tool called dreamlist, with the goal of letting players vote on which old games that want to see hit the service next. For the uninitiated, Dino Crisis is essentially Resident Evil with dinosaurs. Thats not an insult: the first game was directed by original Resident Evil director Shinji Mikami, so the two series have a lot in common. Dino Crisis features the same methodical, survival horror gameplay but with faster (and occasionally much bigger) enemies to contend with. GOG says the new port supports Windows 10 / 11 and includes updates like support for ~4K resolution and modern gamepads. The two games can be purchased individually on GOG or as a bundle. As for the dreamlist, GOG describes it as an enhanced version of its existing wishlist feature:Its a place where your memories meet action. You tell us what matters, and we work to make it happen. Each vote is a spark that inspires publishers to act. With the brand new design, its easier than ever to champion your favorites and make sure your voice is heard because we believe that together we can keep the classics alive. Its a notable development given how inaccessible most classic games are; a 2023 report from the Video Game History Foundation claimed that 87 percent of games released before 2010 are critically endangered. Todays news follows the launch of GOGs preservation program last year, which aims to keep classic games playable and accessible, even if theyre no longer maintained by their original developer or publisher.
