• From Japan, a Tractor Trailer with Four-Wheel Steering
    www.core77.com
I spotted this cargo truck while watching a video on Toyota's manufacturing plants in Japan. Look closely at the cab's wheels:Incredible. I don't think I've ever seen a tractor-trailer with four-wheel steering. It not only makes sense for Japan, with its narrow streets, but would make backing the truck up in confined spaces a heckuva lot easier in any country. Not to mention the reduced turning radius. The truck model is called the Profia, and it's made by Toyota subsidiary Hino. I do wonder if we'll ever see this in the 'States; I'd imagine anyone with a CDL who tries driving one of these would never want to go back.

This is the Snake Watch, by a brand called Zbioland:"Wind up the power for the Snake by rotating the watch bezel. Activate and deactivate the Snake with a simple press of the upper button. When the snake power reserves is fully-wind [sic], about 5 rounds, the snake can move up to 60 seconds."It's up on Kickstarter for around $3K a pop. At press time it was falling short of its $14,639 goal with 17 days left to pledge.

  • Outdoor sauna made from second-hand materials lets you truly relax with nature
    www.yankodesign.com
Its definitely not everyones cup of tea, but many find the heat of a sauna actually relaxing. Most of these establishments are now found inside modern buildings, but a few try to offer a more rustic and nature-inspired experience with an outdoor sauna. Unsurprisingly, most of these are designed like small wooden cabins to blend with their surroundings and evoke that sense of a nature escape. What better way to connect with nature, however, than to build such a freestanding room in a way that doesnt hurt Mother Nature? At least not as much as a regular building would. Although a green sauna might not have been the original motivation for this Upcycled sauna, it still has the same effect of giving you peace of mind and body as you relieve your stress inside a box made from peoples trash or leftovers.Designer: Tom Dvok, Lenka Bak (ika architects)Plenty of materials dont make the cut in the process of making new products. Some materials are also simply discarded when theyve reached the end of their use. While it might be impossible to reuse them in the exact same product, unless they undergo some form of recycling, they could serve a new purpose in some other product thats completely unrelated to their original design.Wooden sleepers and pallets, for example, would become the foundation and structure of a cubical room that would eventually become this sustainable outdoor sauna. Sheep wool that would simply be thrown away is transformed into insulation that would keep the heat from escaping through the walls. Corrugate fiberglass laid out on a grid and layered like scales become the distinctive exterior of this sauna. Admittedly, it doesnt look like a work of art, but its true value lies not in what it has become but in what it has been. The materials were sourced from construction sites, locals, friends, and other people, giving what would become trash a new lease on life. Even more interesting is that, once you know how the sauna was made, you begin to wonder what story each piece has to tell. It gives the room an almost spiritual or at least social vibe, connecting you not just to the Earth but to people and places as well.To top it all off, theres a cooling pool outside, though it looks more like a tub for a single person. Its made from an old discarded mining cart thats painted gold, perhaps giving emphasis to the saying that one mans trash is another mans treasure. The post Outdoor sauna made from second-hand materials lets you truly relax with nature first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Raise Anakin to become Darth Vader in new Star Wars Tamagotchi
    www.yankodesign.com
Darth Vader was one of the first fictional characters that I really loved even though he was technically a villain. There was something about this tragic character that appealed to me and to millions of fans around the world given his popularity. The much maligned prequels, for all its faults, gave us even more insight into Anakin Skywalker and his transformation to the dark side. The Clone Wars series though cemented Anakin as one of my favorites. Sometimes, I wonder about an alternate timeline where he wouldnt have become one of the most dangerous villains in the Star Wars universe. Designer: BandaiWell never get the answer to that of course but at least with this newest toy, you get to raise Anakin. Of course hell still eventually become Darth Vader but at least you get different versions of him. Bandais newest Star Wars Tamagotchi lets you raise a digital pet version of Anakin Skywalker. Just like with other Tamagotchis, you need to feed and take care of him, but with a Star Wars twist. You have lightsaber drills and duels as part of your training and you can also take him to meet other popular characters from the universe. Aside from the usual Tamagotchi things, this one has several mini games like a letter hunt, lightsaber training, the famous/infamous trench run, and even a lightsaber duel with Obi Wan Kenobi and Like. There are also low-res sprite renditions of 12 iconic scenes from the Star Wars universe so there are a lot of things to do in this tiny body. Too bad theres no way that you can actually change the fate of Anakin but at least you will get 10 different Darth Vader outcomes, depending on how well you take care of little Anakin or how much you neglect him, as we all eventually do with our Tamagochis. When you get the Star Wars Darth Vader Tamagotchi, you also get a protective silicone case that is, as expected, shaped like the iconic helmet of this fan favorite villain. So you get a tiny Vader inside an egg-shaped Vader. Imagine how cute that would look like attached to your bag or keychain. Its available for pre-order on Amazon and will be released this March. Bandai previously released R2-D2 and Grogu Tamagotchis so its about time we got another iconic character. • Why Apples Camera Control is such a challenge for case makers
    www.macworld.com
MacworldBuy an iPhone 16 case now!If youve just bought a new iPhone 16, you may be wondering whether its necessary to pick up a case as well. After all, Apple frequently talks about the robust design of its phones and their ability to withstand drops and scratches. Whats more, it seems a shame to hide such an attractive piece of kit inside a protective covering. Should you buy a case? The answer is yes. Its true that iPhones are tougher than they used to be, but Apple has yet to invent the unbreakable smartphone; browse any Apple-focused forum and youll see numerous complaints about broken screens and scuffed casings. It isnt worth the riskand the cost of a protective case is a fraction of the cost of buying a new iPhone (or getting one repaired). And if youre concerned about appearances, consider this: an uncased iPhone looks stunning, but it wont look so nice if you drop it on the floor. And there are some very attractive cases out there if you know where to look. Which is where we come in.Which iPhone case should I pick?Theres a lot of choice out there, so its important to understand what you need from an iPhone 16 case. Obviously it must deliver top-class protection against drops, nicks and scratches. Weve covered aesthetics, too: it needs to look fantastic. But theres more to this decision than toughness and looks. When youre dealing with the new iPhone 16 handsets, you need to make sure the case has been designed with those devices design in mind. Apple added a new Camera Control on the righthand edge, and theres no point buying a case if it fails to protect this delicate feature properly, or covers it up in such a way that it cant be used. Similarly, you need a case that accommodates the Action button that debuted on the Pro iPhones in 2023 and was added to the standard models in the latest generation.Beyond protecting the phone, does the case offer any additional features of its own? Is it compatible with Apples MagSafe charging technology? And finally, is your case sold for a fair price by a reputable company with experience in this field and numerous positive customer reviews?ESRs new Stash Stand for the iPhone 16Maybe it sounds like were asking for a lot. But as it happens, weve found an iPhone 16 case that meets all these criteria. The great news is that the long-established accessories maker ESR has updated its popular Stash Stand case for the iPhone 16, and it has everything you need. The updated Stash Stand has been carefully modified to accommodate the iPhone 16s unique design, an area many rival brands overlook. It features a patented three-layer cover for the Camera Control, keeping out dust and maintaining durability while retaining that popular caseless feel. The control is protected but still fully usable. And aside from this crucial design breakthrough, youre getting the same great Stash Stand case you know and love. The ultra-slim profile: just 1.6mm thick. The shock-absorbing Air Guard corners and raised screen edges, delivering 11-foot drop protection, and powerful scratch resistance from the camera guard. The top-class MagSafe compatibility, both in terms of grip strength (1,500g, more than twice that of Apples cases!) and charging speed. And of course, as the name suggests, you get that pop-out stand for convenient hands-free use.The brilliant new Stash Stand costs just $22.99from Amazon. Macworld readers can get a 10% discount by using the code ESRIP16NEW. (Offer expires February 27.) ESR unveiled the new Stash Stand case at CES in January 2025, and has plenty more exciting announcements on the way. We dont appreciate its lack of front-mounted ports or the fact that you cant add internal storage after purchase. But we do have some tips on how to upgrade a Mac mini and a Mac mini gift idea that will delight your mini friends.1. Satechi Stand Hub for Mac mini with SSD Enclosure Add ports and storageProsSSD bayFront-facing portsCard readersThis inexpensive USB-C hub adds much-needed ports to the front of a Mac mini setup. These ports include SD and microSD card readers, which are lacking from the mini itself. You can buy aslightly cheaper versionwithout the SSD enclosure but we advise spending the extra as it gives you the chance to add extra internal storage later. If your Mac mini has a 512GB internal SSD, then a 1TB or greater SSD within the hub offers excellent and speedy Time Machine backup or just extra space for your files. The latest version accepts faster and cheaper NVMe SSDs. If you or your loved one has the new 2024 Mac mini M4, youll have to wait till spring 2025 for the Satechi mini hub for that model.Read our full Satechi Stand & Hub for Mac Mini review Mac user Gift Guide: USB-C cablesOh come on, youre seriously suggesting a power cable makes a great gift? Yes, we are. The cable that shipped with the MacBook is fine but there are more able, more colorful, and more robust cables that wed be happy to unwrap from shiny gift paper.Modern Macs use Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 cables, which look like USB-C cables but are capable of faster data transfers and charging. In general, buying a Thunderbolt 4 cable makes the most sense as it will be backward compatible with USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 and also future-proofed even if you dont yet own a newer Mac.Check out our roundup of the best USB-C and Thunderbolt cables for Mac. Pair one of these with a USB-C charger, see above, for the fastest charging, or connect and daisy-chain multiple devices via a Mac docking station. 1. Cable Matters Retractable USB-C 2.0 Charging Cable Reduce cable clutterProsRetractable60WTangle freeIts USB-C rather than Thunderbolt and is pretty hopeless at data transfer (limited to USB 2.0s 480MBps compared to Thunderbolts 40Gbps) but this is a neat travel cable or spare charging cable that wont tangle in a pocket, bag, or drawer.2. Pureport Multi-Tool Phone Cleaning KitProsCleans fluff from USB portsCleans cable connectorsPrice When Reviewed:45If your device stops charging via its cable, its understandable to think its old and broken. What is more likely the reason that your wired charging isnt working is a dirty charging port or duff cable. Ports full of fluff is more likely with an iPhone that goes in and out of your pocket but if you travel often with your MacBook or leave your desktop Mac in one place uncleaned for months then you run the risk of messy ports. Its good practice to occasionally clear out the ports (very gently!). This cleaning kit is designed for phones but will also work on Macs with Thunderbolt ports, cleaning ports, and cables. It will, of course, also come in handy with your iPhone. If your iPhone is older than the 15 family, youll need the version for Lightning ports.iPhone Gift Guide: Tech organizer bagsWhere do you keep all your accessories when not in use? • iPhones on T-Mobile can access Starlink satellite communications
    www.computerworld.com
Starlink support appears to be a secret iOS 18.3 feature for iPhones, some of which now support satellite communication services from SpaceX but only for users invited to join public beta testing of the service on US carrier T-Mobile. This supplements Apples existing satellite services supplier, Globalstar. The stars look differentThese are the details asreported by Bloomberg:The service is only available to US users.T-Mobiles list of eligible devices for beta testing Starlink/T-Mobiles direct-to-cell services now includes iPhones. Some high-end Samsung Galaxy and Android devices are also being tested. The service is only available to selected iPhone owners running the latest iOS 18.3 update. It will be made available over time to iPhone users on T-Mobile who apply to test the beta service. If enabled, iPhone users can use this instead of Apples existing Globalstar service. It is enabled using a new toggle in cellular data to enable satellite messaging. While use of Starlink requires you to manually make a connection, the Starlink integration is always on if it is on at all.Applesexisting satellite-based servicesincludeEmergency SOS by Satellite, Roadside Assistance via Satellite, Send Location via Satellite and, with iOS 18, Messages via Satellite.T-Mobile Starlink currently supports sending andreceiving text messages, location sharing and texting 911 emergency services while connected to Starlinks satellites, with plans to pursue voice and data coverage next.(This support will extend to music and audio podcasts, apparently.)It is not yet clear whether the new support for Starlink on T-Mobile extends to Apples existing services, or if it is confined to those from Starlink.Commencing countdown? The partnership between T-Mobile and Starlink was revealed just months before Apples initial introduction of its Emergency SOS via Satellite service withGlobalstar.Apple continues to make serious investments in Globalstar, but the new arrangement with T-Mobile hints that the company might also intend support for Starlink. If it chooses to make that support platform wide, rather than carrier-specific as it is now, then its possible iPhone users in more than 100 countries might be able to use the service. The news comes scant days after Starlinkannounced its own partnership with Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), which lets passengers access high-speed in-flight internet, even over remote areas such as the North Pole.Oracle is also using Starlinkto support some enterprise communications.Despite the new deal, Apple and Globalstar are not sitting still staring at the Starlink. Just weeks before T-Mobiles news, an Apple patent appeared in which researchers described a techthat will smoothly shift connections to new satellites as they orbit. That tech could make it possible for the service Apple offers with Globalstar to make and maintain satellite connections more reliably, potentially without pointing your device at the sky. It effectively turns the satellites into the orbital equivalent of mobile network masts.Apple invested$1.1 billion in GlobalStarin November 2024, taking a 20% stake in the company in exchange for 85% of the satellite carriers network capacity. All this activity, and the dtente with Starlink, suggest the race toward satellite-based iPhone communications is intensifying. Its only a matter of time until global network services become a reality.Which way to goIf you are an existing T-Mobile customer with a recent iPhone (15/16 series) running iOS 18.3 or later you can join the beta to try Starlink. To do so, you mustregister here, share your personal details and confirm your registration.Once registered, When you are in an area without traditional or roaming cellular services, your satellite-optimized device will automatically connect to the T-Mobile Starlink network if you are part of the T-Mobile Starlink beta, according to the carrier. When connected, your device will display T-Mobile SpaceX at the top left of the screen. While you can use 911 to contact emergency services, you are unable to send images of videos via the service. You cannot select satellite when other cellular connection options are available. You can follow me on social media! Join me onBlueSky, LinkedIn,Mastodon, andMeWe.
