• The Apple Watch Series 10 is cheaper than ever
    www.engadget.com
The well-regarded Apple Watch Series 10 is on sale via Amazon for $329, which is a discount of $70. This is a record-low price for the companys smartwatch, tying a deal found on Black Friday. This model actually topped our list of the best smartwatches, as we said it does everything right that the Series 9 did while adding small but useful features. These include a bigger screen thats easier to see from different angles and an overall thinner form factor. The large display comes in handy, particularly when looking for road names on Maps and adjusting settings. We heaped praise on Apples smartwatch in our official review, calling out the improved battery life, enhanced tracking metrics and newly-designed speakers. The Series 10 also keeps an eye on sleep apnea metrics, which is pretty cool. Its still the best smartwatch around for iPhone owners, and a decent option for everyone else. On the downside, this is an extremely iterative improvement when compared to the Series 9. Theres nothing game-changing here, though all of the design tweaks are appreciated. If you currently own a Series 9, you may want to wait until the announcement of the Series 11. Past as prologue, this is likely to happen sometime in September. • NASCAR's driver streams finally bring multiview to Max
    www.engadget.com
Max is set to expand its viewing options, starting with the first race of this year's NASCAR Cup Series this Sunday. For the first time, the streaming service will offer a multiview option with the NASCAR Driver Cam feature, which Max plans to offer during every race on the 2025 schedule.Every car as many as 40 per race will have a 1080p driver cam. Fans will be able to watch up to four of these at once. They can select individual driver cams or choose between two pre-set options featuring four streams each. Max says the drivers included in these will be selected "based on the most compelling matchups and storylines each week," as well as a fan vote on X and Instagram. The NASCAR Driver Cam will include an audio mix of scanner team radios and ambient car noise. Each driver's stream will also have live stats such as their position, race status, lap number and stage, along with telemetry data like their car's speed and RPM. Leaderboards will be available in multiview too. You'll be able to pause, rewind and fast forward the live video, and each driver's stream will be available on demand after races. It's an intriguing, and arguably overdue, step by Max that could help make NASCAR races feel more immersive. Rival streaming platforms such as DAZN and YouTube TV have long offered sports multiview options. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/entertainment/streaming/nascars-driver-streams-finally-bring-multiview-to-max-194522437.html?src=rss

    www.fastcompany.com
A Silicon Valley airport that is on the approach to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) will no longer have air traffic controllers guiding planes starting Saturday, the airports manager said in a Wednesday notice.Current controllers for the San Carlos Airport (SQL) have resigned after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) changed air traffic contracts to a firm that would pay controllers significantly less than their current compensation, the notice states.Airport manager Gretchen Kelly said its request for temporary FAA staffing for the tower was denied. The San Carlos Airport has more than 25 aviation-related businesses and about 500 aircraft, according to city data. The letter came just hours ahead of a deadly crash of a military helicopter with an American Airlines jet at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington, D.C.Fast Company has reached out to the FAA for comment. The agency has been operating without an administrator since Mike Whitaker stepped down on January 20. President Trump named a new acting administrator for the agency on Thursday morning at a press conference related to Wednesdays crash.Kelly said the airport is working closely with the office of Congressman Kevin Mullin, who represents the area, to push the FAA to meet its obligation to provide air traffic services at SQL. Its also exploring options to return the control tower to its previous contractor or find FAA staffing.

  • UPS stock price is tumbling after the delivery company said it would cut back service with Amazon
    www.fastcompany.com
On Thursday, United Parcel Service (UPS) predicted downbeat 2025 revenue as it cut back servicewith its largest customer, Amazon, in order to focus on more profitable businesses. The decision will cut Amazons transported volumes by more than 50% by the second half of 2026.The unexpected announcement came with disappointing revenue results, with UPS failing to meet expectations for 2024. UPSs Q4 revenue was $25.3 billion, slightly below the predicted $25.42 billion. This decision came at a time when UPS is struggling due to a decline in parcel demand following the e-commerce boom of the pandemic and an increase in shipments from discount online retailers such as Shein and Temu.UPS stock was down more than 14% as of Thursday afternoon, after falling during premarket trading. The decline was on track to break the current record for the stocks worst day, which occurred in July 2024, as MarketWatch reports.Shares have lost half their value since 2022, though the company said that carrying less freight for Amazon will eventually boost its revenue per piece.Amazon is our largest customer, but its not our most profitable customer, CEO Carol Tom told investors on a conference call Thursday.Foundational changesAmazon and its affiliates represented about 12% of UPS revenue in 2023, which is nearly all of its United States package business. The package carrier is hoping to gain volume from more profitable segments, such as healthcare-product shippers, small- and-medium-size businesses, and international markets.UPS expects revenue of about $89 billion for 2025, down from $91.1 billion in 2024. The parcel service has brought all of its UPS SurePost products in-house and will launch multiyear efficiency reimagine initiatives to drive about $1 billion in savings by rethinking its business design. The company aims to cut costs by closing buildings, reducing the size of its vehicle and aircraft fleets, and decreasing the size of its workforce. We are making business and operational changes that, along with the foundational changes weve already made, will put us further down the path to becoming a more profitable, agile, and differentiated UPS that is growing in the best parts of the market, said Tom in the annual earnings report. In 2025, UPS expects average daily U.S volume to drop about 8.5% year-over-year while revenue per package is projected to increase by 6%.

  • Schwartz and Architecture updates Silicon Valley house by Frank Lloyd Wright protg
    www.dezeen.com
US studio Schwartz and Architecture has completed a sensitive renovation and expansion of the Green House, which was built in 1966 and designed by Aaron Green, an associate of Frank Lloyd Wright.Located in the Silicon Valley city of Palo Alto, the house was revamped for a couple with three kids. When the clients bought the house, it was "virtually untouched by the original owners", said San Francisco-basedSchwartz and Architecture, or S^A.Green House was originally built by an associate of Frank Lloyd WrightThe house is named after its original architect Aaron Green, who served as Wright's West Coast representative starting in 1951. In addition to working on dozens of Wright's projects, Green also ran his own practice. For this house, Green conceived a low-lying structure with a footprint that was roughly triangular in shape. The house is named after its original architect, Aaron GreenWalls were made of concrete masonry, and the home was topped with a sculptural roof with exposed wooden beams. Long drainage scuppers folded down toward the ground. In addition to its designer, the house is also notable for its developer.Schwartz and Architecture raised the rooflineIt sits within the Palo Verde neighbourhood, which was developed starting in the 1950s by Joseph Eichler, who is credited for introducing modern-style tract housing to America following the Second World War.Of the 11,000 homes Eichler built in California, about 2,700 of them were in Palo Alto. The home was topped with a sculptural roofThe remodelling of the Green House much of which took place during the Covid pandemic involved a full overhaul of the 1960s dwelling, along with the addition of an attached volume and two detached outbuildings. The architects approached the project with the attitude, "First, do no harm" a dictum credited to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates.Wooden accents feature in the kitchen"When we first met on site, we discussed the importance of respecting the integrity of the original home and landscape," said Schwartz and Architecture."Our challenge was to protect the design integrity of the home while adding a substantial amount of space to make the home viable for a young family with three children."The original carport was transformed into a family room with a sunken conversation pitIt is nestled into a "flag lot", which has a long, narrow driveway connecting to the main road. The original house totalled 1,590 square feet (148 square metres) and contained three bedrooms and two bathrooms, along with public areas. Figuring out how to enlarge the home was a challenge, according to the studio.Floor-to-ceiling tiles clad one of the bathrooms"Given the spider-like sculptural roof and scuppers of the original, the home already was a complete thought, with no obvious solution of how to add to the composition," the team said."Our first design move was to head off the existing downward sloping roof beams mid-span and add a small rear addition along the entire length of the house, under a new upward-sloping roof."Lifting up the roof brought the home more lightLifting up the roof brought more light into the existing kitchen and bedrooms, which formerly had very low ceilings, and allowed for hidden cove lighting. The team also raised the roofline and scupper in the front of the house, forming a new carport. The original carport which was low and no longer met local code requirements was transformed into a family room with a sunken conversation pit, drawing upon the home's "mid-century vibe".The primary bedroom suite is tucked behind a board-formed concrete wallThe team also added a boxy volume to contain a primary bedroom suite, which is tucked behind a board-formed concrete wall."Taking inspiration from the home's existing concrete block walls, our addition peeks out behind the new wall referential but deferential," the firm said, adding that a clerestory in the addition counters the heaviness of the original roof.Original flooring was replaced with terrazzo tilesThe concrete floor slab could not be punctured, so the team replaced the original flooring with large-format tiles made of terrazzo.Certain custom furnishings were retained and updated. For instance, chairs were re-upholstered with patterned fabric.Michigan-based interior designer Sarah Sherman Samuel worked with the team on material selections and furnishings.Among the special features is a secret bookcase/doorAmong the special features is a secret bookcase/door in one of the kid's rooms, which connects to the primary bathroom. In total, the firm added 1,512 square feet (140 square metres) to the house. It now encompasses 3,102 square feet (288 square metres) and contains four bedrooms and three and a half baths.Read: Neal Schwartz includes dovecotes in "chapel-like" California studioThe studio also added a gym and office building totalling 288 square feet (27 square metres) and an accessory dwelling unit, or ADU, containing 215 square feet (20 square metres). The landscape created by local firm Boxleaf Design features patches of tall grasses, flowers and trees laced with stone pathways. The firm also added an accessory dwelling unitThroughout the overall project, the team was guided by the notion of letting the "modern interventions shine" while always asking: "What would Aaron do?"Other work by Schwartz and Architecture includes a Silicon Valley courtyard-style house that is fronted by a tall "acoustic wall" and a cedar-clad ADU that serves as a "jumping off point" for modern design in California's wine country. The photography is by Ayla Christman.Project credits:Architecture and interior design: Schwartz and Architecture (S^A)S^A team: Neal J.Z. • Aluminium sculpture in the Oculus celebrates the Year of the Snake
    www.dezeen.com
TV producer Danielle Chang worked with architecture studio Gluckman Tang and artist Warren King to create a snake installation made of CNC-cut aluminium panels at Santiago Calatrava's Oculus to mark the Lunar New Year.Infinite Harmony winds 45 metres (150 feet) through the floor of the ribbed World Trade Centre station and is made of a series of panels reaching one to two metres (four to seven feet) high.Danielle Chang, architect Gluckman Tang and artist Warren King have created a snake installation for the Oculus at the World Trade CenterMade of CNC-cut aluminium panels, the installation is composed of rectangular modules linked together to create an undulating serpentine shape. It rises and falls along its length, tapering towards the tail.Passerby can scan a corresponding QR code, allowing them to control an animated snake overlay on the installation. The piece celebrates the Lunar New Year and pays homage to the interior of the OculusThe piece celebrates the Year of the Snake based on the Chinese lunisolar calendar and its corresponding twelve zodiac symbols.
