  • Apple reportedly ends its Mac-connected Augmented Reality glasses project
    www.macworld.com
MacworldA report from Mark Gurman at Bloomberg claims that Apple is shuttering one of its more advanced projects: a set of Augmented Reality glasses that connect to other Apple devices. Its an inside-baseball look at some of the product decisions that happen at Apple, but while often rumored, these AR glasses have never been officially announced. The glasses were seen within Apple as a natural evolution beyond Vision Pro. Vision Pro was always going to be a niche device, not only because of its sky-high price ($3,500 U.S.) but its cumbersome nature. Even among VR headsets it is heavy and requires a tether to a battery pack. The AR glasses would resemble normal glasses and let users look through lenses in the real world, but contain integrated displays that superimpose rendered graphics on them. Code-named N107, Apple wanted this device to be lighter and more affordable by having them tethered to your iPhone, which would do the bulk of the processing work. That didnt really work out, apparently. The iPhones were limited in their processing capability, and using the AR glasses drained the iPhones battery too rapidly. So, Apple reportedly switched gears to making them tethered to a Mac, which has beefier processors and bigger batteries.Recent prototypes were not received well, according to Gurman, and its easy to see why. If a Vision Pro is cumbersome with a wire going to a battery pack in your pocket, how could you ever expect users to remain tethered to a MacBook? The Vision Pro needs more portability, not less.Gurman says the Vision Products Group is still working on a successor to the Vision Pro, including updated versions that resemble the original model. But its not clear if there is another true AR Glasses project within Apple or if that road is now closed. Apple earlier canceled a project code-named N421, Gurman reports, which were to be AR glasses brought to market about a year after Vision Pro. The team is also still working on several of the underlying technology technologies that would have been used in the glasses.

  • OpenAI unleashes o3-mini reasoning model
    www.computerworld.com
OpenAI on Friday released the latest model in its reasoning series, o3-mini, both in ChatGPT and its application programming interface (API). It had been in preview since December 2024.The company said in its announcement that it advances the boundaries of what small models can achieve, delivering exceptional STEM capabilities with particular strength in science, math, and coding all while maintaining the low cost and reduced latency of OpenAI o1-mini.OpenAI said that o3-mini delivered math and factuality responses 24% faster than o1-mini, with medium reasoning effort, and testers preferred its answers to those generated by o1-mini more than half the time.In addition, the announcement said, while OpenAI o1 remains our broader general knowledge reasoning model, OpenAI o3-mini provides a specialized alternative for technical domains requiring precision and speed. In ChatGPT, o3-mini uses medium reasoning effort to provide a balanced trade-off between speed and accuracy. All paid users will also have the option of selecting o3-mini-high in the model picker for a higher-intelligence version that takes a little longer to generate responses. Pro users will have unlimited access to both o3-mini and o3-mini-high.The model is now available to users of ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro; Enterprise and Education users must wait another week. It will replace o1-mini in the model picker, providing higher rate limits and lower latency. OpenAI is tripling the rate limit for Team and Plus users from 50 messages per day (with o1-mini) to 150 messages per day with o3-mini. The company did not state usage limits for free plan users. In addition, an early prototype of integration with search will find answers online, with links to their sources. The model also offers new features for developers who incorporate OpenAI models in their software, including function calling, developer messages, and structured outputs. They can also choose one of three reasoning effort options low, medium, and high to adjust power and latency to suit the use case. However, unlike OpenAI o1, it does not support vision capabilities. The company said that o3-mini is available in the Chat Completions API, Assistants API, and Batch API now, to select developers in API usage tiers 3-5.In addition to its performance, OpenAI touted the models safety. Similar to OpenAI o1, we find that o3-mini significantly surpasses GPT-4o on challenging safety and jailbreak evaluations. Before deployment, we carefully assessed the safety risks of o3-mini using the same approach to preparedness, external red-teaming, and safety evaluations as o1.

  • Lost Records: Bloom and Rage Everything You Need to Know
    gamingbolt.com
Dont Nod has ventured into the RPG space in recent years and left the Life is Strangefranchise in its rearview mirror, but even now, the interactive narrative-driven adventure genre is what the studio is most strongly associated with. Soon, it will be returning to its roots withLife is Strangespiritual successorLost Records: Bloom and Rage,a game that seems to be looking to capture everything that defines a Dont Nod experience first and foremost. For fans of the studios work, theres certainly reason to be excited.Ahead of the games approaching release, here, were going to talk about why, as we take a look at the key details that you should know aboutLost Records: Bloom and Rage.SETTINGYou could never overstate the value and importance of the setting of Dont NodsLife is Strangetitles, and it seems likeLost Recordsis going for something similar. The game is set in a fictional town in Michigan named Velvet Cove. Described by the developer as a seemingly sleepy little town surrounded by dense woodlands and serene lakes, Velvet Cove is apparently a place where beauty meets the bizarre, which sounds very on-brand for Dont Nod.STORYComing-of-age stories, mystery, and buckets of interpersonal drama are the things you expect first and foremost in a Dont Nod story, and yes, thats whatLost Records: Bloom and Rage is promising as well. Its story will focus on a group of friends who swear never to speak to each other again after a mysterious and fateful event. Now, they are reunited 27 years later, forced to come face-to-face with that secret.DUAL TIMELINESLost Recordsstory is going to be told across two different timelines, interestingly enough. With one half of the story set in 1995 and the other half 27 years later, players will not only gradually uncover the secrets of the past over the course of the story, but also shape the present-day story alongside it. True to form for Dont Nod, your actions and choices will also shape the story, with multiple endings and different outcomes possible for both timelines.CHARACTERSDont Nods talent for crafting compelling, relatable characters is known to anyone whos played one of the studios games, which means expectations fromLost Recordswill be high. What do we know about the games cast though? According to the studio, the aforementioned group of friends that the story will be focused on will be four strong- Swann, Nora, Kat, and Autumn. That said, not each character is going to be equally prominentONLY ONE PLAYABLE CHARACTERThe four aforementioned characters are going to be central toLost Recordsstory, but only one of them Swann will take on the role of playable protagonist. Speaking to GamesRadar about why the other three arent playable, creative director Michel Koch said the decision was made to avoid a feeling of disconnect from on-screen events. I play a character in one scene, but then in the next scene I see this character talking to me, and Im not choosing the words? he explained.DIALOGUE SYSTEMOne of the bigger improvements that Dont Nod is promising inLost Recordsover its previous adventure game is the dialogue system. For those who have played theOxenfreegames, this might be familiar, because apparently, dialogue interactions inLost Records: Bloom and Ragewill be much more dynamic and contextual. Players will be able to move in and out of conversations, interrupt characters at moments of their choosing, and even interact with things in their surroundings to open up new dialogue options. Speaking in an interview with CG Magazine, Koch said, What were trying to do withLost Records: Bloom and Rage is to make the dialogue system slightly more interactive and naturalistic in a way that you will be able to have much more urgency about when to talk when not to talk, how to use some of the things that are around your surroundings to bring new dialogue topics to the discussions.CAMCORDERAnother important part ofLost Recordsgameplay loop is going to be the camcorder- in half of the game, at least. In the past section, set in 1995, Swann will be equipped with a camcorder that she will be able to whip out at (almost) any time. The camcorder will be used for both puzzles and storytelling purposes, of course, but with the ability to record at almost anytime, anywhere, zooming in and out of things to your hearts content, it looks like players will also be given the freedom to goof around in creative ways. After recording videos, in fact, youll also be able to edit them in various ways.RELEASING IN TWO PARTSDont Nod is no stranger to episodic releases, and thoughLost Recordsisnt quite adopting the oldLife is Strangeformula, its not releasing as one contiguous release either. The game is coming in two parts, or two tapes, as Dont Nod as dubbed them, with Tape 1 called Bloom and Tape 2 titled Rage. Tape 1 will release on February 18, while Tape 2, which was previously set for March, was recently delayed to April 18.LENGTHDont Not has also confirmed thatLost Records: Bloom and Rageis going to be about 10-12 hours in length. Thats across both tapes, though its unclear whether that runtime will be roughly evenly divided across the two parts. The game is, of course, also promising some replay value with its multiple endings and choice and consequence mechanics, for those who want to get more out of it.PHOTO MODEAnother details that the developer has confirmed for the upcoming adventure title is that it is going to have a Photo Mode available at launch. Further details on the features the mode will come with havent been revealed, though with the camcorder serving as a crucial gameplay feature, youd expect the Photo Mode to be pretty full-featured.BEGINNING OF A NEW SERIESMoving on fromLife is Strangewas a big decision forDont Nod, but it looks like the studio now wants to own its own adventure series. In fact, it has confirmed that its viewingLost Records: Bloom and Rageas the beginning of a series. Of course, that doesnt say anything about what potential sequels or follow-ups could look like, but Dont Nod has made its intentions to release further instalments in the universe pretty clear.ACCESSIBILITY FEATURESOver on the games official FAQ page, Dont Nod has also revealed brief details onLost Recordssuite of accessibility features. The game will feature options for motion sickness, gyro controls while using the camcorder, crosshair options, customizable controls, and more.PC REQUIREMENTSAs youd expect,Lost Recordssystem requirements on PC arent particularly demanding- at least on the lowest settings. Minimum settings (which will run the game at 720 and 30 FPS) stipulate either an i7-2700K or an FX-8350, along with either a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (4 GB), a Radeon RX 560 (4 GB), or an Arc A380 (6 GB), and 8 GB of RAM. Meanwhile, to run the game at 1080p and 60 FPS on recommended settings, youll need either an i5-11400 or a Ryzen 5 5600X, along with either a GeForce RTX 3080 (10 GB) or an RX 6800XT (16 GB), and 16 GB of RAM.Finally, to run the game at 4K and 60 FPS, youll need either an i5-12600K or a Ryzen 5 7600X, as well as a GeForce RTX 4090 (24 GB). On all settings, players will also need an SSD.PC FEATURESFor those intending to playLost Records: Bloom and Rageon PC, Dont Nod has confirmed that the game will feature support for DLSS and FSR right out the gate. That said, ultrawide resolutions wont be supported. The game will run on ultrawide monitors, but with black bars on the sides, according to the developer.PRICEWhenLost Recordslaunches for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, it will be sold for $39.99. Thats the price for both tapes put together, with no individual purchases being offered for each. When tape 2 releases in April, itll arrive in the form of a free update for all owners.

  • Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is a Great Reminder of What Makes Shorter Linear Games So Good
    gamingbolt.com
Gaming isnt exactly a cheap hobby, so it makes sense that were always in pursuit of greater bang for our buck, so to speak. A lot of the times, that comes down to how much content games have on offer, which, in turn, has meant that the last decade or so has seen an overabundance games that seem packed and expansive almost for the sake of it. Bloat and unnecessary padding have become common issues, and even when that isnt the case, theres no shortage of games that somehow end up being massive, multi-dozen hour odysseys purely on the back of how theyve been envisioned by their creators. On one hand, you cant help but love more bang for your buck. At the same time, however, our collective appreciation for brief, more concise, and less expansive games has also grown immeasurably with time. Thankfully, we continue to get reminders of exactly why we love such experiences every so often (even if it isnt as often as wed like), and recently, got another one in the form ofNinja Gaiden 2 Black.Koei Tecmo and Team Ninjas character action remaster was announced and then shadow dropped during Microsofts recent Xbox Developer Direct presentation, and jumping back into it, weve been reminded once again of how gripping a compelling a tightly made linear game can be.You can easily finishNinja Gaiden 2 Blackin 9-10 hours, though completionists can maybe double that time, if youre really looking to squeeze every last drop out of the game. Either way, thats a short game by modern standards- but to hell with modern standards is what I say, because in no way does a full playthrough of the game feel inadequate by any stretch of the imagination. Do you want it to keep going? Well, yeah, you absolutely do, because thats how incrediblyNinja Gaiden 2scombat is famously so, in fact but as far as its runtime and length are concerned, the game goes on as long as it needs to, and ends when it needs to.That sort of brevity and willingness to end at the right time is refreshing to see in a game every time we see it, given the fact that all too often, so many games seem to be hellbent on doing the exact opposite. Across its runtime,Ninja Gaiden 2 Blackdelivers stellar combat, tight and satisfying mechanics, and memorable boss fights, and never does it feel like any of those core strengths werent able to breathe because the game was too short. Of course, the fact that games that are a dozen (or less than a dozen) hours long can be (and often are) excellent is by no means a fresh revelation, but with the needle constantly moving in the direction of gigantic open world epics, every great new linear release feels like a victory worth celebrating. It helps, of course, thatNinja Gaiden 2 Blackis virtually a game over a decade and a half old. Visually, its been completely overhauled, but even so, Team Ninja has described it as a remaster rather than a remake- and playing it, you can see why. As significant of a visual leap as it is, it is ultimately still almost exactly the same game as it was when it launched back in 2008. Therearedefinitely some changes here and there, but barring those largely minor alterations, at its core,Ninja Gaiden 2 Blackis very, veryfaithful to its source material. The fact that it manages to be as compelling of an action experience even now despite how old it is only hammers home how timeless its focused and linear design sensibilities are. From a business perspective, you can obviously understand why publishers and developers tend to favour larger, more open-ended games to linear and shorter ones, because its usually the former that sell gangbusters. No, its not a rule of thumb or anything like that, but take a look at some of the bestselling games of the last decade or so, and youll see that an overwhelming majority of them fall in the open world camp. The Witcher 3, Elden Ring, Hogwarts Legacy, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Red Dead Redemption 2,andCyberpunk 2077,for instance, are some of the highest selling games of the last few years, and theyre all, every last one of them, open world behemoths. But shorter and more linear gamesdoattract sizeable audiences as well. Whether itsResident EvilorThe Last of Us,Space Marine 2orAstro Bot, Silent Hill 2or any number of similar titles that have chosen to deliberately limit their scope, the games industry has thankfully kept up a steady supply of such experiences, and the ones that have been legitimately good have, more often than not, enjoyed plenty of critical and commercial success. Meanwhile, the AA scene has also embraced linear game design to great effect. A Plague Tale: Innocence and A Plague Tale: Requiem are both excellent linear single-player titles, while in 2022, we also got Evil West, an excellent throwback action game that old school fans of the genre shouldnt miss. And thankfully, it looks like theres plenty more to come in the time ahead as well. For example,Ninja Gaidenitself is ready for its resurgence, becauseNinja Gaiden 2 Blackwas, of course, only the cherry topping the sundae at the aforementioned Xbox Developer Direct showcase. The main announcement that Koei Tecmo and Microsoft made as part of the presentation wasNinja Gaiden 4,co-developed by PlatinumGames and bringing theNinja Gaidenseries back into the limelight this Fall, ending a thirteen year hiatus. And naturally, excitement surrounding the game is high. Everything that weve seen of it so far has looked promising, from slick combat and expanded traversal options to a new protagonist and more, so expectations from the game are definitely going to be high.Another upcoming linear action-adventure title that has caught the eye isSouth of Midnight. Compulsion Games upcoming outing has looked increasingly promising with each of its showings, having turned more than a few heads with its setting, visual style, enemy designs, and its blend of action combat and agile traversal. Developers have also confirmed that the game will be somewhere between 12-20 hours long, which is exactly the sort of range were hoping for.Linear games have admittedly not been the games industrys preferred design style for a long, long time now, but though there was a time when they almost seemed on the edge of extinction, lately, it does feel like theyre becoming increasingly common again. Obviously, we dont want larger, more open gaming experiences to go anywhere they have their own undeniable appeal that cant be replicated in a smaller, tighter game but this healthier balance between linear and larger games that the industry seems to be shifting towards is something that we are very much in favour of. Long may it continue.Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to, GamingBolt as an organization.
