• After Dragon Age: The Veilguard Layoffs, BioWare Has Under 100 Employees
    www.forbes.com
Dragon Age: The VeilguardBioWareThere is really no getting around the fact that BioWare is in dire straits at the moment, now at the end of a decade of three missed opportunities to create new classic RPGs. Now, a new report from Jason Schreier at Bloomberg says that after layoffs and permanent transfers to other EA studios, BioWare is now down to less than 100 employees to finish Mass Effect 5, which still has an unknown release date. This comes after a bizarre statement from BioWare this past week that the full studio wasnt needed for this stage of development of Mass Effect 5, which is not an uncommon practice for many games at a certain stage of development. But this was different, given that in doing so, BioWare was permanently shrinking in size, moving many devs over to elsewhere in EA, but this statement totally masked a number of layoffs, possibly dozens, mainly focused on the Dragon Age: The Veilguard team. Reportedly, the studio has shrunk from 200 employees around two years ago to less than 100 currently.Veilguard caps off a decade of BioWare underperformance with failed new live service IP Anthem, and the much-memed Mass Effect Andromeda that did not match the quality (or sales) of the original trilogy. Now, Dragon Age: The Veilguard reportedly did half the engagements EA wanted, just 1.5 million (and with EA Play, thats not even sales). Reviews were okay, and many Dragon Age fans did in fact like it, but not nearly enough of them showed up. The game was also not what it could have been in part because it was originally supposed to be live service before that was entirely erased midway through production, which was incredibly disruptive.Mass Effect 5BioWareCan less than 100 employeesactually make a Mass Effect 5? That depends. We dont know exactly what phase of production the game is in, and big games have had 100 people or so working on them in some instances. But that does seem low for a game thats supposed to be this big, and you also have to wonder how morale is at BioWare at this point, as they watch half the studio be erased in the last few years, and are no doubt fearful for their own jobs if ME5 is not a hit.ME5 head Michael Gamble has promised that this will stay true to Mass Effect games of the past, which would be a contrast to Dragon Age: The Veilguard changing the aesthetic and tone pretty dramatically from previous games. That said, it has now been 13 years since the last well-liked Mass Effect game, ME3. We also, worryingly, do not even have a release year for Mass Effect 5 right now, and have only seen the barest of teasers that serve as reminders that yes, the game still exists.Whether you like their last decade of games or not, its tough to watch any devs lose their jobs. We should all be hoping for Mass Effect 5 to be a hit not just for that reason but because well, Id love to play another great Mass Effect game, wouldnt you?Follow me , and .Pick up my sci-fi novels the and

  • Passkeys reach 15 billion accounts but fall short of expectations so far
    www.techspot.com
In a nutshell: The adoption of passkeys, the much-heralded passwordless authentication technology, has made significant strides over the past year but has fallen short of some ambitious predictions from 2024. While the technology has proven effective in streamlining logins to a simple fingerprint tap, many companies remain hesitant to embrace this innovation, seemingly stuck in the past. Andrew Shikiar, CEO and Executive Director of the FIDO Alliance has been a vocal advocate for passkeys. PC Mag notes that Shikiar didn't mince words about the current state of password security."Long story short, passwords suck," he said during a panel on identity and authentication in Washington DC, last week.Shikiar highlighted the growing vulnerability of multi-factor authentication to sophisticated phishing attacks, particularly as attackers leverage generative AI to craft increasingly convincing emails. In contrast, passkeys offer a robust defense against such threats."Passkeys can't be fooled by phishing sites since the quick and silent exchange of cryptographic keys that makes them work won't even start without the correct site involved," Shikiar explained. He cited impressive adoption figures from tech giants, noting that Amazon has created 175 million passkeys while Google has enabled them for over 800 million accounts. They are also much faster and easier to use than traditional authentication methods. // Related StoriesMicrosoft reports that signing in with a passkey is three times faster than using a password and eight times faster than a password with multifactor authentication. Google's data shows a 63.8 percent authentication success rate for passkeys, compared to just 13.8% for passwords.Despite these promising numbers, passkey adoption has not quite reached the lofty goals set in previous years. Last year, Shikiar predicted that passkey-enabled accounts would reach 20 billion by 2025. However, by early January, the figure stood at just over 15 billion. While this represents significant growth, it falls far short of his and others' projections."We're in a phase of strong adoption," Shikiar told PC Magazine after his presentation. "But it's still early adoption."Shikiar expressed disappointment in the slow uptake among airlines and hotel chains, industries he had identified as prime candidates for passkey implementation. However, he remains optimistic about the future. Shikiar still believes that travel and hospitality will drive growth in 2025, pointing to the convenience of biometric authentication compared to traditional passwords. He also hinted at an upcoming passkey rollout by a major American bank, though he declined to provide specifics.Humans are resistant to change, and unless there is a compelling reason to move away from the status quo, they would rather stay where they are, even if it's less convenient. Therefore, companies must create a slick user experience (UX) to get more people on board."A lot of companies that are employing passkeys are still improving their user experience," Shikiar noted.Aside from the UX, the enthusiasm of OS and browser vendors in promoting their passkey services has led to a confusing array of prompts for users. This fragmentation in the passkey ecosystem has drawn criticism from security experts."There are too many cooks in the kitchen, and each one thinks they know the proper way to make pie," Ars Technica's Dan Goodin opined suggesting there should be a universal standard.

The best Chromebooks running Googles Chrome OS remain quite viable, and that platform has seen its own transition to AI features with Chromebook Plus.Recommended VideosAcers Chromebook Plus Spin 714 is the latest iteration of a lineup that specifically added Plus to the name to identify it as capable of running Chromebook Plus. If you like Chrome OS for its simplicity, security, and performance on low-end hardware, then youll like the Chromebook Plus Spin 714.RelatedAcer Chromebook Plus Spin 714Dimensions12.36 inches x 8.86 inches x 0.78 inchesWeight3.21 poundsProcessorIntel Core Ultra 5 115UGraphicsIntel GraphicsRAM8GBDisplay14.0-inch 16:10 FHD+ (1920 x 1200) IPS, 60HzStorage256GB SSDTouchYesPorts2 x USB-C with Thunderbolt 41 x USB-A 3.2 Gen 11 x HDMI 2.01 x 3.5mm audio jackWirelessWi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2WebcamQHD (2560 x 1440)Chrome OSBattery53 watt-hourPrice$699While Acer might release other configurations of the Chromebook Plus Spin 714, theres only one available right now. It has an Intel Core 5 Ultra 115U, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and a 14-inch FHD+ IPS display for $699.Thats an attractive price for a laptop that will provide very good performance given the lightweight nature of Chrome OS. It is not, though, a purely budget laptop. For that money, youll need to be okay with any limitations of the platform and be willing to look past some other, equally affordable Windows laptops like the Asus Zenbook 14 thats around the same price and sports a fantastic OLED display.Mark Coppock / Digital TrendsThe Chromebook Plus Spin 714 looks a lot like a lot of 14-inch convertible 2-in-1s today. That is, it has a gray chassis with minimalist lines and some chrome edging that looks good and doesnt come across as ostentations, making it a rather conservative but still attractive design. Youll know its a Chromebook Plus thanks to the subdued logo on the lid, but otherwise, this could be a Windows machine as far as appearances go.Its also reasonably well-built, with an all-aluminum chassis thats just the tiniest bit flexible in the keyboard deck and lid. Regarding the latter, its no worse than the Apple MacBook Air which also had a lid that will bend a little under pressure. The hinge is smooth enough to allow opening the lid with one hand, but that makes it a bit wobbly in clamshell, tent, and media modes. Tablet mode is fine, though.Mark Coppock / Digital TrendsThe top bezel and bottom chin are a bit thick, making the depth a bit more than a clamshell with smaller bezels all around. And, its a bit thick at 0.78 inches whereas many 14-inch laptops are a lot thinner. As a reference, the MacBook Air 13 is insanely thin at 0.44 inches, but other 14-inch 2-in-1s like the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 (0.59 inches) are also thinner. The 3.21-pound weight is fine, although thats a bit heavy to hold as a tablet.Mark Coppock / Digital TrendsThe keyboard is quite good, with large keycaps and plenty of key spacing. The switches are light and snappy, which I like a lot. Id rank it close to the best keyboards, like HPs OmniBooks and Apples Magic Keyboard. The touchpad is more mundane, as a smallish mechanical version. It works fine, although its button clicks are a bit sharp and loud. The display is touch- and pen-enabled, although the pen is optional and wasnt shipped with my review unit. Chrome OS has okay pen support, and the touch display is good for Android games.Connectivity is very strong, including both fast Thunderbolt 4 ports, which are unusual on Chromebooks, and legacy ports. Wireless connectivity is also reasonably up-to-date.The webcam is a high-res 1440p version, and it supports various Chromebook Plus features based on Googles Gemini AI features. I mention those here because a lot of them depend on the webcam. But, there are actually a host of Chromebook Plus features that the Chromebook Plus Spin 714 has. In a way, Chromebook Plus is Googles response to Microsofts Copilot+ PC AI initiative. The difference is that Chromebook Plus laptops dont seem to require a fast Neural Processing Unit (NPU), which the Chromebook Plus Spin 14 doesnt possess.I found the various features to work well, and that includes the webcam. So far, AI seems more like a novelty to me, so I wont spend too much time on Chromebook Plus.Mark Coppock / Digital TrendsMy Chromebook Plus Spin 14 review unit uses an Intel Core Ultra 5 115U, a Meteor Lake chipset with eight cores (two Performance and six Efficient) and 10 threads, running at 15 watts. Its not a fast chipset, and as mentioned doesnt have an NPU like Intels Lunar Lake, Apple Silicon, and Qualcomms Snapdragon X chipset. If it was running Windows 11, it wouldnt be a very fast chipset at all. However, Chrome OS is a lot more lightweight. Although its capabilities have expanded, including the ability to run Android apps, it remains at its core a web-based operating system. Given the Chromebook Plus Flip 14s 8GB of RAM, which is a lot for Chrome OS, its real-life performance is very good. It only scored 1,599 in the Geekbench 6 single-core test and 5,482 in the multi-core test, and those arent very good. But the chipset is more than fast enough for good performance in Chrome OS. We cant run our complete set of benchmarks on Chrome OS, but Im comfortable that most users will like the Chromebook Plus Flip 14s performance. The Intel integrated graphics arent the best, but you can still run most Android games fairly well. And thats about the limit of gaming on the laptop unless you go with something like Nvidias GeForce Now streaming service. In that case, youll get very good gaming performance up to the limits of the subscription you buy and the speed of your internet connection.Mark Coppock / Digital TrendsThe Chromebook Plus Flip 14 has a 53 watt-hour battery and an FHD+ IPS display. The combination should provide decent battery life.In my testing, the laptop achieved around eight hours in our web browsing test and 14.5 hours in our video looping test. Those are good results that promise most of a days work running typical tasks. Its not as good as some of the best Windows and macOS laptops today, but its good enough.Mark Coppock / Digital TrendsThe 14.0-inch FHD+ (1920 x 1200) IPS display is just sharp enough at the size that text isnt too pixellated. If you want the sharpest text, youll likely wish it was higher resolution. Brightness was very good and colors seem dynamic and reasonably accurate. It doesnt have the colors and inky blacks of OLED panels, but it will please productivity users and media streamers.I cant use my colorimeter to test Chromebook displays, but I have no subjective issues with this one. The audio, provided by a pair of upward-firing speakers, was also good but not great. Some users dont need the complexity and wide compatibility of Windows 11 and macOS, but a simple tablet like an iPad or an Android tablet wont suffice. Thats where Chromebooks come in, and the Chromebook Plus Spin 714 is a solid addition. Its fast enough and has good enough battery life, with a display thats not spectacular but is good enough for most uses. At its $699 price is low enough that its a good budget option. Its an easy convertible 2-in-1 to recommend.Editors Recommendations

  • You Asked: Antenna signal fix, best anime TV, and mirror magic
    www.digitaltrends.com
html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd" Table of ContentsTable of ContentsSignal interruption fixWhy does my TV look better in the mirror?Best TV for watching anime (or whatever)Can in-ceiling speakers sound great? On todays episode of You Asked: Why dont wireless OTA antenna kits exist, and is it even possible to get your antenna signal transmitted wirelessly? Can a mirror magically make your TV look several times better? Whats the best TV for anime? And can an in-ceiling speaker surround system be really impressive?Martyn from across the pond writes that after wall-mounting their LG G-Series OLED, there was some kind of signal interruption between their antenna (or aerial) and their TV. After hooking up their TV to the coaxial cable connection for the antenna, nothing happened. Theres probably a fault in the cable, however its routed through the walls in a Victorian home, so digging it out and replacing it isnt an option. They looked into getting a wireless transceiver kit and were disappointed to find out that, apparently, no such product exists. So, the question is: Whats the solution?Ill spell out that solution shortly. First, why in this day and age of wireless-everything boxes is there not a box that just takes a TV antenna signal and wirelessly beams it to a receiver connected to your TV? Often, the location of the TV is not the best place for an antenna. Theres clearly a need to be able to put the antenna where it should go, put the TV where it needs to be, and then wirelessly beam a signal from one to the other to avoid the hassle of running a cable through the house or, in this case, replacing an existing faulty coaxial cable.RelatedThe reason that no wireless transmitter and receiver can just take a raw TV antenna signal and send it over the air wirelessly? The signal itself spans a broad range of the wireless spectrum and is heavily modulated. The equipment needed to wirelessly retransmit a signal like that is restricted to professional video folks. Not only is the signal too complicated to re-broadcast and actually illegal to do so without a broadcasting license it would be extremely susceptible to interference, likely with other wireless devices in a home.In the US, this is heavily regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Thats why you wont find a TV antenna that doesnt have a coaxial cable attached to it.What can you do? The key is to connect a tuner to the antenna itself at the antennas location. The tuner demodulates the signal and turns it into a video signal, and that demodulated, display-ready video signal can then be wirelessly transmitted throughout the home over Wi-Fi.Tablo has been redesigned in its fourth generation. Phil Nickinson / Digital TrendsThats what OTA tuners and DVRs like Tablo and SiliconDust do. They take the signal from an antenna, process it, and then make it available to watch via a Wi-Fi network. The SiliconDust HDHomeRun Flex Duo 2 is a box that will allow you to watch up to two different channels at the same time from anywhere you have internet. You can watch broadcast TV through their app, which is available on iPhone, Android, Xbox, Apple TV, Roku, and LG (Im not sure about Samsung Tizen youd want to double check). This device isnt a DVR, but it can become one if you add an external hard drive, which allows you to not only watch live TV, but also to record up to two channels at a time, whenever you want, wherever you want. The Tablo devices are similar, but most of those are DVRs so youre buying a DVR on top of the wireless TV solution. However, the pricing is very competitive. I dont think the Tablo brand is available in the UK or Europe Im guessing thats where you are since you said across the pond but there are likely other brands available. Just look for an OTA DVR or a device similar to the HDHomeRun.Image used with permission by copyright holderThis next question is wacky and kind of a mystery.Oliver writes that they have a Sony TV near the entrance of the house, and opposite to the TV is a mirror. They swear that the mirror makes the TVs picture quality significantly better jaw-dropping, in fact. Whats going on here? Is this mirror magic? How can a mirrored image look better than the image source? There are several potential factors at play, and its likely a combination of them that makes the TV look better in the mirror than viewing the TV directly.Mirrors dont actually reflect 100 percent of light they absorb some of it. Most mirrors have a black backing without it you could see through them, like a two-way mirror that absorbs some of the light shining on them. This means some of the brightness of your TV will be knocked down, but it may also cause the TV to appear to have better black levels than it actually does because any blooming is erased. The contrast of the TV may appear to be superior in the mirror, even though the total brightness has been knocked down.In fact, the reflected mirror image might make an LCD TV look like an OLED TV (with perfect black levels that are jaw-dropping to see). Also, the mirror will help counteract some of the TVs own anti-glare measures. When the TV is viewed directly, some low-level light smearing and rainbow effects from anti-glare treatments are going to be visible. The mirror, again, will knock that effect down, making the TV look even better.A mirror could also mute image artifacts because, in practice, it is actually distorting the image. Is this magic? No, its science, but probably seems like magic.Digital TrendsAndy writes in wondering what is the best TV for anime?I get this type of question which TV is best for anime, sports, or movies quite often, but its worth talking about periodically. To address this topic, lets start out by talking about speakers. When I worked at a loudspeaker company, people would come into the showroom looking for speakers that were best for rock, EDM, jazz, classical, or country. I understand why: Many folks want speakers that make the music they love sound as good as they want it to.The best speakers will sound amazing no matter the music genre. If they can sound true to the source the way the music was meant to sound they are great speakers. That means that they need to be able to cover the full spectrum of audio frequencies in a balanced way and steer clear of distortion. After that, its a matter of taste. Do you want your speakers to put out a ton of bass? Then you need a speaker that can put out a ton of bass. Do you like super aggressive, hot treble that sounds crisp and clean? Youll want a speaker that can play super high frequencies at very high sound pressure levels without distortion (you might want a horn-loaded tweeter, like the kind you find in a Klipsch, for example). A speaker may sound great for classical or all-acoustic jazz because the bass demands for those genres tend to be lower than for hip-hop or R&B. The treble and upper midrange demands tend to be lower for classical and acoustic jazz than, say, rock, which involves a lot of loud, crunchy guitar distortion. So, for classical and acoustic jazz and some folk music, a really great bookshelf speaker may be all you need. But for music that places higher demands on the bass or treble regions, a larger tower speaker may be needed. You could also add subwoofers to bookshelf speakers to get closer to what you want. The best speakers, however, can do all, regardless of the music genre.Apply this logic to TVs. The best TVs are content-agnostic and display everything beautifully. Thats not to say that you cant target a TV that is sufficient for your more limited needs as opposed to shooting for the moon. (If youre just doing a bunch of short, in-town driving trips, you could get away with a B&W i3 and its limited range rather than get a Tesla, right?)The most important aspect of picture quality is contrast. You want the best possible black levels and the brightness will depend largely on the viewing environment and individual tastes. If you just watch TV news, where the image is nothing special, then who cares? Get the brightest TV you can afford and call it good. If you watch a lot of sports, a high refresh rate is important (but I would argue a high refresh rate is always important). However, for anime, movies, high-quality TV shows, and even high-quality YouTube content, the needs are the same: high contrast, which starts with the best possible black levels, and then accurate, vibrant color. For the image to look good, youll need decent processing that counts for all genres of video content. If cost is no object and you dont watch anime during the day with sunlight pouring into the room, get a 55-inch OLED TVthat you can afford.Digital TrendsDChris writes that hes closing on a new construction home soon and the builder offers pre-wiring for a 5-channel in-ceiling speaker system. DChris knows that the ear-level LCR (left, center, right) speakers would be preferable, but also wonders if they went ahead with the in-ceiling wiring, could the front in-ceilings be repurposed for Atmos channels? The first thing that comes to mind: Why wont they wire the LCR for in-walls instead of in-ceilings? Is it because of how the room is set up? If its new construction, they should be able to do whatever you want. Also, the wiring runs for in-walls will be shorter than in-ceiling. (Did they already put the sheet-rock up? They can fish it, no problem.)If in-ceiling is the only option, thats fine. If you have the means, get it wired up. Go ahead and get in-ceiling speakers installed: Get a high-quality speaker made from a well-respected audio brand and one that can be aimed at your listening position.In-ceiling systems can sound awesome if they are set up right and the speakers are well powered. Some in-ceiling speakers even come with their own enclosures they arent the open-baffle design, so they can sound more refined and less is left to chance.Digital TrendsIf you decided it wasnt good enough and I do think youll be pleasantly surprised you can continue using the back two speakers as surrounds, set up bookshelf or floorstanding speakers up front, and then use two of the three front in-ceiling speakers as Atmos channels. The center speaker would just be the odd one out. (Most receivers and processors that youre likely to consider dont have processing that would allow you to task that speaker as a center-front Atmos channel.)Id take discreet front channels in the ceiling with some decent separation over a three-channel passive soundbar any day. I hope that helps and if I missed something, let me know.Editors Recommendations

  • I tried 3 types of premade espresso martinis. The best was velvety smooth and had a coffee-forward flavor.
    www.businessinsider.com
I compared three premade espresso martinis to determine which was the best.I thought the On the Rocks espresso-martini cocktail was bitter and had an odd aftertaste. The Ketel One espresso martini was the winner because of its smooth, sweet flavor.Espresso martinis have been around for decades, but today, they seem more popular than ever.I recently saw a few bottled and canned versions of the alcoholic drink usually made with vodka, coffee liqueur, espresso, and simple syrup at my local liquor store.Eager to see which was best, I decided to try three brands of premade espresso martinis. To level the playing field, I made sure to prepare each drink the same way pouring the liquid into a shaker with ice and straining the drink into a martini glass. Here's how each espresso martini stacked up.The On the Rocks espresso-martini cocktail was my least-favorite beverage I thought the On the Rocks espresso-martini cocktail was bitter, with an acidic aftertaste. Andrea McHugh A sales associate at the liquor store told me the On the Rocks espresso martini, which has 20% alcohol by volume, was a popular drink.According to its label, this "rich and dark espresso martini" was made with Effen vodka and espresso-coffee liqueur. In the glass, the deep-caramel-colored liquid resembled scotch. It smelled neutral, but it had an overpowering flavor when it hit my lips. It started out bold and bitter, then left an odd, lingering, acidic aftertaste well after I finished my sip.Overall, I wouldn't purchase this beverage again. The Cutwater espresso martini had a tasty, coffee-forward flavor I could see myself bringing the Cutwater espresso martini to a tailgate or party. Andrea McHugh The Cutwater espresso martini came in a pack of four cans. According to the label on the box, each can contained at least two shots of "real spirits" and 13% alcohol by volume. When I poured the drink into a glass, the aroma was exactly what I expected: coffee-forward with vodka overtones.Made with coffee-cream liqueur, it had a nice cold-brew flavor and a light mouthfeel. Because the drink went down easy, the alcohol could definitely sneak up on you.I think the Cutwater cocktail would be perfect for events like tailgates or fireside sipping. The Ketel One espresso martini was my favorite of the bunch The Ketel One cocktail tasted like a classic espresso martini. Andrea McHugh The Ketel One espresso martini blended the brand's vodka with coffee liqueur. Though potent at 20.1% alcohol by volume, the Ketel One espresso martini was pretty smooth. Its subtle chocolaty aroma and strong flavor were a nice surprise. The martini's dark-amber hue gave way to a velvety smooth, sweet drink with slight hints of a flavor that reminded me of hazelnut mimicking exactly what one expects from a traditional espresso martini.Overall, the Ketel One espresso martini's coffee-forward flavor dominated the competition, making it my winner.

  • I'm a multimillionaire who balances frugality and treating my 3 kids. I remember what it's like not to be wealthy.
    www.businessinsider.com
Brandon Medford started a luxury automotive brokerage firm in 2017.Since then, he's built a multimillion-dollar net worth through different businesses. He enjoys treating his kids to things like courtside tickets but says underneath he's still frugal. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Brandon Medford, CEO of Brandon Medford Enterprises. It has been edited for length and clarity. When I was 22, I was working as the finance director for an automotive dealership. I was bringing home more money in a month than my parents made in a year. My annual income was about $500,000, and I had virtually no expenses because I was still living at home. And yet, I still ended up broke. I was spending money on partying, travel, and $1,000 dinners. Most of my friends were making $50,000 a year, so I paid for everything when we went out. I wanted to take care of my people. After three years of that, I had no money in the bank. I realized I needed to change my mindset about money. At the time, I was devastated, but looking back, I learned an important lesson: you should always budget and live below your means. As my wealth grew, I looked for more frugal role modelsI left that job in 2017 to found an automotive brokerage company. It took off quickly, and I started selling luxury vehicles. What set me apart was how I delivered cars. I would deliver cars anywhere, with a big bow and confetti. People wanted to celebrate the milestone of getting their new car, and I made that possible. The business continued to flourish, especially after 2021, when I founded a loan program that specifically helped entrepreneurs purchase luxury cars. Suddenly I was selling Astin Martins, Lamborghinis, Ferraris, and other luxury cars like they were Hondas. As I built my wealth, I realized I needed to emulate people who reinvested their money. I know someone who sold a business for $80 million and reinvested $70 million. You'd never know he had $80 million in liquid assets because he lived off the $10 million. I wanted to be like that, not like the fast-spending guy I was in my early 20s.I want my kids to enjoy the fruits of my laborI reinvested money in real estate, business investment, and other enterprises. Today, I'm a multimillionaire. I'm also a dad to three kids, ages 7, 5, and 4.I still consider myself a very frugal person, but I'm not afraid to indulge in what my wealth can offer me. I want my family to enjoy the fruits of my labor. I helped connect my 5-year-old daughter with a modeling gig at New York Fashion Week, and now she goes to birthday parties with Dream Kardashian. My 7-year-old son and I go to Knicks games and sit courtside, meeting the players. When I was growing up, my dad took me to one Knicks game every year, and we sat way up high. I used to point to the courtside seats and say, "One day, I'm going to sit down there." To be able to do that now with my dad and son is very meaningful. At the same time, I take the kids to the modest homes of my family members in Queens. They know that not everyone is wealthy because they see it in their own family.I sometimes revisit the Wendy's I used to work atWhen you see someone driving a luxury car, you can react one of two ways. You can say, "Wow, he's flashy." Or, you can say, "I wonder what he's done to be able to afford that." I've always been curious asking questions like that and it's helped me build wealth.Today, I sometimes drive my Ferrari to the Wendy's in Brooklyn where I worked when I was 16-19. I'll go through the drive-thru and tell the person at the window, "This is just the beginning." I want them to know I was where they were 13 years ago. With discipline, they could do the same thing I've done.

  • Simu Liu May Finally Give Sleeping Dogs Its Movie
    gizmodo.com
Shang-Chi 2may be a ways off, but in the meantime, Simu Liu is looking to bring his martial arts skills over to aSleeping Dogsmovie. Recently, Lius made clear his desire to give the 2012 action-crime game a film adaptation that never manifested when it first came out. According to IGN, those dreams may become a reality, as the MCU star is reportedly teaming with Square Enix on a film: not only playing police detective Wei Shen, but coming on as a producer. At time of writing, a director and writer arent attached, and its unclear how far along things are. But if youre someone who still carries a torch for the game and its would-be film, this is pretty exciting for you. Despite crime and action movies being consistently popular, Liu noted its been a bit of a struggle to make this happen in Hollywood: on January 31, he called it tiring to pitch the film to execs who dont understand the game. But everyones overwhelming love ofSleeping Dogshas given us life! And if things really go well? Liu hopes the film leads to another game getting made. If you didnt playSleeping Dogswhen it came out, think GTAin Hong Kong. In the game developed by United Front and originally part of theTrue Crimeseries, players take on the role of Wei as he infiltrates the Sun On Yee triad to bring it down from within. At the time, the games big hook was a focus on martial arts over gunsthinkBatman: Arkhamcombatand missions built around his loyalty to either the triads or the police. It got a solid reception, and United Front was developing a sequel that wouldve seen players split time between playing Wei and a dirty cop named Henry Fang. It was canceled, and United Front shut down in 2016.As for the movie? That was first announced back in 2017 with Donnie Yen set to play Wei, and he revealed to Polygon back in January his own efforts to make it happen. Liu hasnt forgotten that, and should things work out, he hopes to involve both Yen and Will Yun Lee, Weis voice actor in the game, involved in some capacity. (By that same token, he wants Lee back as Wei for a sequel game of any kind.) Regardless of whether the film happens or not, seems a good time as any to try and play Sleeping Dogs (which frequently goes on sale) in the next few years. Want more io9 news? By Isaac Schultz Published February 2, 2025 | Comments (9) | 2024 YR4 as seen by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope. Image: ESO/O. Hainaut et al. Odds are a funny thing. 1-in-100, for example, sounds like a long shotuntil you find out its the chance that an asteroid will impact Earth. In a surprisingbut not definitiveturn of events, early warning systems this week found that an asteroid set to swing by Earth in 2032 has a 1-in-63 chance of smashing into our planet. Heres what you need to know about the asteroid, its potential impacts, and why theres no reason to panic. At least not yet. What we know about asteroid 2024 YR4 NASAs Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in Chile first spotted the asteroid on December 27, 2024. ATLAS promptly reported the asteroid to the Minor Planet Center, a clearing house for the positional measurements of small bodies like asteroids and comets. The asteroid measures between 130 and 300 feet wide (40 to 90 meters), based on estimates from its reflected light. Its currently moving away from Earth at 8.24 miles per second (13.26 kilometers per second). According to NASAs Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, 2024 YR4 could make impact on Earth six discrete times between 2032 and 2071, but the greatest likelihood is on December 22, 2032. The probability of 2024 YR4 hitting Earth decreases with each subsequent pass. It is moving away from the Sun, getting farther and farther and fainter and fainter, said Paul Chodas, the Director of CNEOS, in a phone call with Gizmodo. The key thing is that its fading. It requires larger and larger telescopes to detect, and by April we think itll be too faint to observe with the largest telescopes.According to a statement published Wednesday by the International Asteroid Warning Network, the impact risk corridor for the asteroid extends across the eastern Pacific Ocean, northern South America, the Atlantic Ocean, Africa, the Arabian Sea, and South Asia. 2024 YR4s orbit relative to Earth and surrounding planets. Graphic: NASA/JPL Hazardous asteroids like 2024 YR4 are disturbingly common Asteroids are potentially hazardous by NASAs standards if they are between 100 to 165 (30 to 50 meters) in diameter and their orbit of the Sun brings them within 5 million miles (8 million km) of our own orbit. But potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs) rarely end up colliding with Earth. Depending on their size and incoming angle, asteroids can cause bright fireballs that explode and break apart in the atmosphere (called bolides, which can shatter windows) to gargantuan impact events that kill most life on Earth.Material from space falls on Earth every day. Over the course of a year, about 5,200 tons (10,000 grand pianos) worth of space dust lands on the planet. But its imperceptible because of its size. The size of an asteroid is a critical reason for the amount of damage it causes on impact, and right now, scientists dont have enough data to know the exact mass of 2024 YR4. Many systems are monitoring NEOs, and all play a part in measuring the risk each object poses of entering Earths atmosphere and impacting. The Catalina Sky Survey and the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) program are dedicated to the study of NEOs, including hazardous asteroids, but other telescopes and observatories also play important roles in spotting the objects. In 2023, a new algorithmic tool set to be deployed in the Vera Rubin Observatorys 10-year survey of space and time found its first PHA, showing a promising new avenue for surveilling the worrying objects. How asteroid impact probabilities are calculated The near-Earth neer-do-wells make up NASAs Sentry Impact Risk Table, managed by CNEOS. The Sentry table is an automated monitoring system that constantly recalculates the impact possibilities of near-Earth asteroids over the course of the next 100 years.2024 YR4 currently tops that running order of possible troublemakers by a significant margin. Its cumulative impact probability is currently 1-in-63, or a 1.58% chance of an impact (which, it should be stressed, means a 98.4% chance the asteroid misses Earth). In second position on Sentrys table is 29075 (1950 DA), which is much less likely to hit Earth (the odds are 1-in-2,600), and such an impact is not expected until 2880. Lucas Janson, a statistician at Harvard University, points out that pulling the ace of spades (or any card, for that matter) from a deck of cards is a 1-in-52 chance, or 1.92%. In other words, youre more likely to pull an ace of spades from a deck than 2024 YR4 is to impact Earth. Janson offers another probability thats even close to 2024 YR4s 1.6% impact chance: There is a 1.56% chance of flipping a coin six times in a row and having it land on heads each time. Those odds are nearly the same as 2024 YR4 hitting Earth in 2032. Depending on how you frame it, such an event is either very unlikely or too likely for you to feel completely calm.Asteroid impact probabilities have two main scales of measurement The CNEOS Sentry table automatically sorts asteroids by their cumulative hazard rating using the Palermo Technical Impact Hazard Scale. Developed by NEO specialists, this scale compares the likelihood of a potential impact to the average risk posed by objects of the same size or larger up to the predicted impact date. In other words, the Palermo scale tells scientists what the biggest issue on the table is at a given moment, by comparing a given asteroids threat to the danger posed by other space rocks like it. The Palermo scale is not to be confused with the Torino Impact Hazard Scale, another way of measuring the danger posed by asteroids. The Torino Scale is more like the Moment Magnitude Scale for earthquakes or the Saffir-Simpson Scale for hurricanessystems you might be familiar with; the Torino scale is a color-coded scale from 0 to 10 (white to red) indicating the severity of an asteroid threat. 2024 YR4 is a 3 on the Torino scale, meaning that the close encounter with the asteroid is meriting attention by astronomers, according to CNEOS. Level 3 asteroids have a 1% or greater chance of collision capable of localized destruction, CNEOS notes, though, Most likely, new telescopic observations will lead to re-assignment to Level 0. To make it into the Threatening, or Orange, zone of the Torino scale, 2024 YR4 would need to attain level 5 status. If you didnt follow all that, dont be disheartened. Torinos too simplified to satisfy people but Palermo is too complicated to communicate easily to a lot of the public, said Bruce Betts, Chief Scientist at the Planetary Society, in a phone call with Gizmodo. Betts added that the odds of impact tend to creep up before they drop to zero, as uncertainty in the asteroids path decreases. If uncertainty in the path decreases, but Earth remains in that slimmer range of potential trajectories, the impact probability rises. Then, as follow-up observations reduce the possible paths further, Earth (ideally and historically) falls out of the impact path, causing the impact probability to plummet towards zero. In fact, 2024 YR4 started out this week at 1-in-83 odds of an impact, which rose to 1-in-71 by midweek. Today, CNEOS Sentry updated that figure to 1-in-63. But this is par for the course in refining the asteroids potential path, and subsequent observations and modeling will be critical in determining whether Earth remains in the asteroids orbital path or not. A 2024 YR4 impact would be very bad, but not cataclysmic 2024 YR4 is a large asteroid (though its mass range offers a lot of wiggle room), but an impact with Earth would not cause a global cataclysm similar to that induced by the 6-mile-wide (10 km) meteor that slammed into the planet 66 million years ago, ending the reign of dinosaurs. An impact would produce about 8 megatons of energy, comparable to the Tunguska blast of 1908, according to NASA. But thats if the asteroid is on the smaller side of its mass rangeif its about twice that size, it could expel nearly 300 megatons of energy and unleash catastrophic damage over a wide area. CNEOS also maintains a handy resource of hypothetical impact scenarios that indicate how scientists could respond to asteroid threats of varying sizes, velocities, orbits, and differing amounts of warning. These CNEOS scenarioswhich play out annually at the IAA Planetary Defense Conferenceare important tests of humankinds emergency preparedness in the face of an oncoming asteroid strike.A graphic showing the damage caused by asteroids of different sizes. Graphic: NASA Other potentially hazardous asteroids are on the horizon Though 2024 YR4 suddenly popped up on astronomers radars as a possible threat, there are other asteroids on the list. On April 13, 2029a Friday, by the waythe asteroid 99942 Apophis will swing by our planet at an uncomfortably close 20,000 miles (32,000 km). Apophis was discovered in 2004 and, at 1,100 feet wide (335 meters), is much larger than 2024 YR4. It is the only asteroid to have a higher rating on the Torino scale than 2024 YR4, which (temporarily) attained a class 4 rating in late 2004. There was initial concern that Apophis could impact Earth in 2068, but NASAs 2021 calculations indicated that the asteroid doesnt pose a threat for at least a century. Now, Apophis rating on the Torino scale is a 0. The change is a reminder that more observations of asteroids with uncertain orbits is critical to determining their exact trajectoriesa difference between a normal day on Earth and a disastrous one.Thankfully, 2024 YR4 will safely pass Earth on December 17, 2028, giving scientists a chance to observe it in greater detail. This flyby could help refine estimates of its mass, density, physical characteristics, orbital trajectory, and other key factors. Scientists are working tirelessly to mitigateand neutralizethreats from space Shortly after the Apophis odds were recalculated and near-Earth object researchers breathed a big sigh of relief, NASA scientists pulled off one of the most ambitious missions yet in spaceflight. It was the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, or DART, and it was the moment NASA scientists proved that humankind could change the trajectory of an asteroid. In other words, life on Earth may no longer be helpless in the face of potential destruction from space, as were on the verge of having the capability to nudge asteroids off course.Ejecta streaming from Dimorphos about a day after the DART impact. Image: NASA, ESA, STScI, J. Li (PSI) This is the one large-scale natural disaster that we can actually prevent, Betts added. The first thing you need to do is exactly what happened with this discoveryyou need to find them. Over the next few months, ESA is coordinating observations of the asteroid with more powerful telescopes, including the European Southern Observatorys Very Large Telescope. Betts noted that now that researchers have identified 2024 YR4, historical data on the object might help refine its orbital path (its a chicken-or-egg situation, Betts said). Chodas told Gizmodo that space-based infrared observations would be ideal for observing the asteroid, but its difficult to justify using the Webb Space Telescopes valuable observing time on the rock when scientists are still in the early stages of data collection and its impact probability remains relatively low. We often get asked, Are you worried? Chodas said. With a 99% chance that this asteroid will miss, no. The community is not worried, but we must pay attention to it. Because even though 1% is very small, the asteroid is of a size that it could cause serious damage.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Isaac Schultz Published January 29, 2025 By Isaac Schultz Published January 28, 2025 By Passant Rabie Published January 24, 2025 By Margherita Bassi Published January 23, 2025 By Isaac Schultz Published January 14, 2025 By Margherita Bassi Published December 20, 2024

This project is the first phase of a new satellite brewery for Brouwerij Lindemans, including the associated road, landscaping, and sewerage works. The site is in the northeast of the Sint-Pieters-Leeuw municipality, in the industrial district of Ruisbroek. The design consists of two primary structures: a production hall and a publicly accessible office building. The office building features a large brewing and event hall, complemented by supporting facilities such as kitchens, storage areas, shops, offices and conference rooms, as well as a spacious, partially covered terrace designed for social events. In a future phase there are plans to expand the storage and production hall at the back of the site.Save this picture! The two volumes will have distinct finishes. The brewing hall serves as the 'face' of the brewery and expresses this through a unique architectural design. The geometry of the faade is inspired by the rounded shapes of the stainless-steel silos used for the storage and production of beer. The faade will consist of a series of vertical, concave brick elements with large openings that serve as either windows or terraces. The playful faade rests on a refined concrete plinth that binds it to the site. As a nod to 19th-century breweries and in reference to other existing factory buildings in the area, a nuanced red/brown brick was chosen for the faades. This brick with its traditional character, creates a nuanced contrast with the contemporary geometric form of the brewing hall. Lending the building a dynamic yet sensitive presence in its environment. Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The production hall was built using prefabricated concrete sandwich panels. The neutral character of this building allows it to remain secondary to the brewing hall. The material palette for the brewing hall is also restrained, using only brick for the faade and architectural concrete for the base, caps, and sills. The railings will be made of lacquered aluminum or steel. Save this picture!A third component of the design is the wall surrounding the silo and tank area, which through material use and architectural form is integrated seamlessly into the language of the brewing hall. This wall continues the rhythm of the concave segmented faade with the same nuanced red/brown brick and resting on a concrete base. The most visible tanks behind this low wall are also embraced as part of the faade. They are finished in high-quality stainless steel to enhance their visual impact and express the building's industrial function. Inside the building, the design language of cylindrical forms is carried through in the volume of the elevator shaft, the monumental spiral staircase, and the large entrance lobby.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Buitenplas 2, 1601 Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, BelgiumLocation to be used only as a reference.
