• Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, Chicopee // 1857

With crop failure a common occurrence in 1830s Ireland, immigration from Irish to New England surgedwith workers and families looking for a better life. Labor opportunities were abundant in the newly established mill town ofChicopee, with the Irish flocking here to dig canals, build dams and mills and later work in those same buildings. Their wives and daughters would work as cooks and maids, but later as operatives in those same mills. As many Irish were Catholic, it became apparent that a Catholic congregation should be established, St. Matthews was first organized inChicopeein 1838. An earlier wood-frame church was built and used for a number of years untila large site on South Streetwas purchased by the Diocese for a new campus. Irish-born ecclesiastical architectPatrick Keelydesigned the church building which was constructed between 1857-1859 in the Gothic Revival style. The church was dedicated the Holy Name of Jesus church and exhibited sandstone-topped buttresses, rows of pointed dormers running down the clerestory on the sides, and a prominent central steeple. In 1910, the present copper spirereplaced the original steeplewhich was damaged and burned in a lightning strike. The complex grew throughout the 19thand 20thcenturies, with a rectory, schools, convent and monastery built on the site. Sadly, due to dwindling membership and fiscal considerations, many of these buildings were demolished in the past decades. The church appears now to be closed and is stillowned by the Archdiocese of Springfield. I hope something can be done to preserve this landmark structure and the remaining buildings on the site.

Today's NYT Strands hints and answersCredit: New York TimesLooking for Sundays Strands hints, spangram and answers? You can find them here:The day of the moon is here. Yesterday was Groundhog Day and I forgot to mention it, but I figure well take a look and see how much winter we have leftnot that weve had much winter to speak of this year, at least not here in the mountains. It turns out Punxsutawney Phil did indeed see his shadow, so we have another six weeks of winter left. Could the seer of seers please check in with the snow gods and send some our way? For now, grumbling about the white fluffy stuff aside, we have a Strands grid to solve, and words to uncover. Lets do it!Strands is the newest game in the New York Times stable of puzzle games. Its a fun twist on classic word search games. Every day were given a new theme and then tasked with uncovering all the words on the grid that fit that theme, including a spangram that spans two sides of the board. One of these words is the spangram which crosses from one side of the grid to another and reveals even more about the days theme.Spoilers ahead.Todays Strands HintsTodays Theme: Order up!Hint #1: BreakfastMORE FOR YOUHint #2: Think omelets and so forthTo help you uncover all the words, here are the first two letters of each word:SCCOBOBAPOBAPIMARemember, spoilers ahead! What Are Todays Strands Answers?Todays spangram is: MAKINGEGGSHeres the full list of words:SCRAMBLECODDLEBOILBASTEPOACHBAKEPICKLEHeres the completed Strands grid:Today's StrandsScreenshot: Erik KainTodays Strands BreakdownAt first, I thought this would all be various cooking words once Id found BAKE and BOIL. But then I saw the word EGGS. Then I found BREAKINGEGGS, which didnt work. But I knew that it had to be something eggy. This led to POACH and BASTE and PICKLE, and then MAKINGEGGS. The final two words I came up with were SCRAMBLE and finally CODDLE. I admit, I rarely pickle or baste or poach or coddle my eggs. Im much more likely to make scrambled eggs, omelets or over-easy.How did you do on your Strands today? • The EU Is Betting $56 Million On Open Source AI
    www.forbes.com
The EU is backing a $56 million project involving researchers from of Europe's top AI labs to build a new open source large language model. 2020 Bloomberg Finance LPFor years, the European Union has been quicker to regulate artificial intelligence than invest in it. Now, with the battle for AI supremacy heating up thanks to a powerful new open source model from Chinas DeepSeek built for a fraction of the price of its U.S. rivals, its stepping off the sidelines. This morning Brussels announced plans to develop an open source AI model of its own, with $56 million in funding to do it.The investment will fund top researchers from a handful of companies and universities across EU countries as they develop a large language model that can work with the trading blocs 30 languages. The project will also tap into supercomputers from companies like Spains Mare Nostrum and Italys Leonardo, both of which have received funding from the EU.The budget is a tiny fraction of the money pouring into leading American AI labs like OpenAI, which is reportedly raising up to $25 billion at a $300 billion valuation, or even one of Europes hottest AI unicorns, Mistral, which raised $640 million last year. But given DeepSeeks breakthrough, what once sounded like chump change in the AI space could go much, much further: the EUs backing for the project is 10 times what Deepseek claims to spend on training its own R1 model. I think Europe should be now seen to be in the race again, says project coordinator Jan Haji, professor of computational linguistics at Pragues Charles University. The project aims to fund an open source LLM that European companies and governments can build on top of, assured that it was built with the EUs values baked in. Open source models can allow users to make tweaks and modifications while OpenAI and Anthropics AI are walled gardens. Theres a need for open source models that are aligned in terms of languages, values and with society at large, says Peter Sarlin, cofounder of Finnish AI lab AMD Silo. (Mistral, which is based in Paris and was valued at over $6.2 billion last year, has made a similar pitch, but its not participating in the project.)Europe has good reason to build its own LLM: Meta, OpenAI and other U.S.-based companies have slowed or blocked the release of tools in Europe because of legal risks stemming from its AI Act, which seeks to ban high-risk uses of AI and takes effect in February. Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg and Spotify cofounder Daniel Ek warned that incoherent and complex regulation could lead to Europe falling further behind on AI in an open letter published last year.Since first passing the law last summer , the EU has made some moves to bolster its tech sector. Its annual budget for research grants was bumped a quarter to $1.5 billion. It will also invest $1.5 billion into upgrading the continents network of supercomputers, and last week EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen unveiled plans meant to stoke growth among its 27 member nations. For some, the project is reminiscent of a failed $550 million project to build an European search engine to rival Google. Why invest public money, when venture capitalists have been vying to back private projects? Sprinkling money around in a fragmented fashion is more about PR than driving actual results and impact, warned tech investor Rasmus Rother of Merantix Capital.More from Fo

  • Games Inbox: What Switch 2 games will be in the April Nintendo Direct?
    metro.co.uk
Could Resident Evil be returning to a Nintendo format? (Capcom)The Monday letters page is already worried about cheaters in GTA 6 Online, as one reader resists celebrating the death of MultiVersus. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.ukThree guessesAs much as Im looking forward to the Nintendo Direct in April, Im almost more excited to see what third party games will be revealed there. Nintendo is totally going to want to prove the Switch 2 has changed in that respect but I cant imagine theyre going to be happy just showing off old PlayStation 4 games or even older current gen games like Elden Ring.Theres going to be new stuff from everyone, I reckon, and those new MySims games EA accidently leaked are just going to be the start of it. The reader guessing that Konami was waiting till now to reveal a new Castlevania sounds totally believable to me. And if its not that itll be something like it.Maybe Resident Evil 9 (remember, Resident Evil 4 was originally a GameCube exclusive), maybe Final Fantasy 17, maybe something new from Microsoft (theyve already hinted at it). More people are going to be watching that Nintendo Direct than almost any other gaming even this year, more than any State of Play and definitely more than an Xbox Direct.Im not saying all my suggestions will come true, theyre only guesses, but I dont think its just going to be Nintendo games. Although just for the record I predict Mario Kart, Metroid Prime 4, Donkey Kong/Super Mario 3D, a Zelda remaster, and some kind of WarioWare/1-2-Switch game.OnibeeTechnical difficultiesThe new days Inbox and readers features are taking a while to make it up to the top of the page and being buried down beneath a lot of scrolling to find for a big portion of the day and are hard to find, easy to miss. They do get there eventually but the two Saturday weekend feature as of 1pm requires this much scrolling to find on mobile:12 articles under the editors picks header, one ad, one newsletter sign up box, then the trending now chunk, metro shorts chunk, game reviews chunk, games news chunk, games inbox chunk then I get to the more stories chunk which has this weekends Readers Features as the first two stories.SimundoGC: Yes, theres definitely something going wrong at the moment. Our thanks to all the readers that have pointed it out. It seems to be happening randomly and only at certain times of the day, but well try and get it fixed as soon as possible. In the meantime, the articles are still all there, theyre just not necessarily showing up on the main channel page.Accidental tendsetterTheres no way that BioWare is going to survive unless Mass Effect 4 is a massive (pun intended) hit and I only give them a 50/50 chance of staying around long enough to actually finish it. Like other readers, I blame EA for the terrible marketing for Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Although there wasnt much of it anyway, so I dont think they ever had any faith in it.With just 100 people left at BioWare I dont know how good Mass Effect 4 can even be. Although, I doubt the originals were done with much more so maybe this could be a blessing in disguise, and theyll have to concentrate on the important stuff and not get carried away with bloat or over-the-top graphics.Seems a strange thing to be happy about but maybe that could ensure it comes out in a reasonable amount of time too. We all know about the problems of games taking too long to make and being too expensive so maybe EA could inadvertently start a trend where they limit the size of teams and get things back to where they were a generation or two ago.PrestonEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukGet rich quickI dont take any pleasure from reading about people losing their jobs but I am so glad that the live service bandwagon finally seems to have come off its wheels. I bet MultiVersus couldve been a really successful game if theyd just sold it properly but they just couldnt resist trying to turn it into an infinite money generator.I played it and it was pretty good, definitely the best not-Smash Bros. game Ive played but it felt so incomplete and shady, with all the money they wanted you to pay for extra characters. If theyd just sold it upfront like Smash Bros. Ultimate Im sure it wouldve been a big hit.Theres no point cheering the end of live service games though, as Im sure therell be another get rich quick scam that publishers will fall for soon after, there always is. Itll probably be AI this time and then when everyone realises thats a dead end itll be something. Anything to avoid just paying talented developers to make good games.JoshoCrying out for a sequelReally looking forward to seeing the new Onimusha this week. Its taken a long time for Capcom to make good on their promise of bringing back old franchises and hopefully this is just the first of many. I get why they did it instead of Dino Crisis, given the gameplay is quite different from Resident Evil, but I hope they both get their time in the sun again.Im kind of shocked we havent heard anything about a new Devil May Cry for so long though. Technically that isnt even an old franchise, but it is odd the last one seemed to do quite well but that was six years ago now. I wonder if Capcom has made a deal with Hideki Kamiya, for him to make the next one? Seems a lot of work to do that and kami 2 at the same time, but something strange is going on and Im not sure what.BensonCheats always prosperIm concerned over paying for GTA 6 Online. It was great that it was free with GTA 5 and it soon became one of my top five PlayStation 3 games, but that mode soon became filled, overrun, and then absolutely riddled with invincible/invisible cheaters or those that could make every player in the lobby explode spontaneously. It was bad enough when the Hydra fighter jet was added to the game, for players to legitimately buy and use (against other players), but you could hide from these troll players by being in a building, staying in a train tunnel or going underground in the subway/sewer system where they couldnt kill you.But despite grief reporting those aforementioned cheaters, RockStar did nothing about it but were quick to act once a money-giving player/hacker gave you millions more than you could ever spend (the irony of getting money through dubious means was clearly lost on them). These cheaters were part of the reason I would later sell my PS3 Slim.If Rockstar want me and countless others to pay 70 or whatever it is for the online aspect, Im going to expect no, demand a swathe of admin-bods be watching these online sessions and act on the first hint of a player cheating.LeighDappaPhysical differencesFor the reader that was asking about the size of Nintendo Switch 2 game boxes, Ive just read a rumour that theyre going to be 33% bigger. Not confirmed or anything, so could easily be wrong. They seem to be the same basic shape though, i.e. tall and thin.Even if that particular rumour is not true, I still would assume that they are going to be different because Nintendo will want to make it clear that Switch 2 is different and so are its games. Otherwise theyre going to have people complaining they bought the games and they dont work on their Switch 1 console.LemptonAliens and zombiesId definitely say I enjoyed Resident Evil Zero and there was some interesting design choices, like the leaving of equipment at any location for your other character to pick up. It obviously didnt take off but was part of an interesting overall package and gave Resi Evil Zero its uniqueness.I also enjoyed the William Birkin and Albert Wesker laboratory partnership, adding to the Umbrella backstory. Also, the little links to Resident Evil 5s African plot was interesting, about the origins of the virus ingredients known at the time. The overall experience I took from Resi Zero was a decent prequel, introducing some new characters and plot lines, and of course the swapping between Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen. The creepy leech creatures and their strange, unnerving stride movement always creeped me out! Though the mad monkey and frog mutants probably not.Id personally say that there was only one bad Resident Evil and that was 6. But that was why we then got Resi 7 and 8. Not forgetting the well-received remakes of Resi 3 and especially Resi 2, as well, and of course all this leads to a highly interesting next game in the series.Speaking of great horror titles, I saw Alien Romulus the other day and despite so many homages from the original films they seemed to pay off. It was like watching teenagers taking the roles of adults but it still seemed to work and it was not too cheesy. In fact, everything in the movie worked and just felt like it was nostalgic in the correct ways, without badly attempting to appeal to the core Alien fanbase.Alien and Resident Evil have definitely been very versatile, and follow a hit and miss routine, but luckily they mostly have been okay. The Prometheus and Covenant films were enjoyable enough and I wasnt sure where it was going after Covenant, but Romulus was very decent. Like Resident Evil, I will be highly interested in what experience were going to get next from two of my all-time favourite entertainment franchises.AlucardInbox also-ransI had no idea Sony had even ported Spider-Man 2 to the PC. Then I read the performance is terrible. What even is the point? Why not just wait till it works? I just dont get it.ArthurIsnt it crazy how absolutely no one talks about the PS5 Pro anymore? I know it was only meant to be for hardcore fans but after the price shock and it came out I dont think Ive ever heard it mentioned again. Just seems such a waste of resources (naturally, I never bought one).YellowMore TrendingEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukThe small printNew Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend. • ChatGPT's Deep Research tool can create reports from hundreds of online sources
    www.engadget.com
Theres no two ways about it, theres a newfound sense of urgency at OpenAI. Two days after releasing o3-mini to the world, the company made a surprise announcement on Sunday evening, revealing Deep Research. The new feature allows ChatGPT to find, analyze and synthesize hundreds of websites and online sources to create reports at the level of a research analyst. On top of the usual text questions, users can upload files, including PDFs and spreadsheets, when prompting ChatGPT in this way. The chatbot will then take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes to compile an answer, a side panel documenting the agents progress and citations as it works. It accomplishes in tens of minutes what would take a human many hours, OpenAI says of the new feature. Our ultimate aspiration is a model that can uncover and discover new knowledge for itself, said Mark Chen, chief research officer at OpenAI, during the companys reveal livestream. Its core to our [artificial general intelligence] roadmap. As far as limitations go, OpenAI says ChatGPT can sometimes hallucinate facts or make incorrect inferences when conducting Deep Research, though at a notably lower rate than other current models. Additionally, the agent may sometimes struggle to differentiate between authoritative information and rumors. Users may also notice some formatting errors. We expect all these issues to quickly improve with more usage and time, the company notes. If all of this sounds familiar, its because Googles Advanced suite includes its own Deep Research feature, which not only shares the same name but broadly offers the same set of capabilities as well. One significant difference between the two is that Google offers access to Gemini Advanced through its $20 per month One AI Premium plan. By contrast, youll need a $200 per month ChatGPT Pro plan to start using OpenAIs version of Deep Research today.Deep research in ChatGPT is currently very compute intensive, the company reasons, adding it will limit Pro users to 100 queries per month. The longer it takes to research a query, the more inference compute is required.OpenAI says its working on a version of Deep Research powered by a smaller, more cost-effective model. In turn, that will allow the company to offer significantly higher rate limits. In the meantime, OpenAI hopes to get the tool in the hands of Plus users in about a month, following a round of safety testing. As with most of the companys other recent releases, European users will need to wait before they can try out the tool for themselves, with Deep Research not yet available to people in the UK, Switzerland and the broader European economic zone. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/ai/chatgpts-deep-research-tool-can-create-reports-from-hundreds-of-online-sources-022223298.html?src=rss
