  • AltStore brings first porn app to iPhones in the EU, Apple doesn't 'approve'
    appleinsider.com
The first native porn app for iPhone called "Hot Tub" may have passed notarization checks, but Apple wants everyone to know it certainly doesn't "approve" of such dangerous things on its devices.Hot Tub arrives on AltStoreApple's App Store Review Guidelines have almost always explicitly stated that apps featuring "overtly sexual or pornographic material" are not allowed, period. However, alternate app stores in the EU can publish anything that passes a notarization check, and that's happened with the first-ever native porn app for iPhone. When AltStore promoted the app, named Hot Tub, it used the phrase "the first Apple-approved porn app" in marketing. Apple was quick to deny that it "approved" of the app, and released a statement to MacRumors. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums

  • Batman: Arkham Shadow Crosses 1 Million Players
    gamingbolt.com
Batman: Arkham Shadowmay not have been the new mainlineArkhamgame many have wanted for a decade, but the VR-exclusive prequel developed by Camouflaj has nonetheless enjoyed its fair share of success. Upon its release last October, the game saw widespread critical acclaim, and reflecting that, also seems to have attracted a healthy audience.Spotted by YouTuber QuestWithMatt on Twitter, Batman: Arkham Shadowsfirst Achievement titled False God has been unlocked by over 1 million players. The Achievement is unlocked within the opening minutes of the game, so that number is a fairly accurate estimation of the games total player count. Its worth mentioning, however, thatArkham Shadowis free with every Meta Quest 3S and with every Meta Quest 3 sold since the games release, which means we dont know what its actual sales numbers are.As for those hoping for a new AAA console Batman title, last year, reports claimed that a new Batmangame had entered development at Rocksteady Studios following the failure ofSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. • Can anyone stop President Musk?
    www.theverge.com
Elon Musk has an uncanny ability to sort out which of Americas rules are real. It turns out punishment from the National Labor Relations Board isnt real, punishment from NASA isnt real, and punishment from the FAA isnt real. The Delaware Chancery Court is extremely real. Based on the past two weeks, the Delaware Chancery Court may be the only real thing in the entire American government.Heres a quick recap. While putative President Donald Trump was busy alienating allies through tariffs and wasting water in California real mad king hours Musk pushed out the head of the FAA. Then the reports came fast and thick: Federal employees received a fork in the road email highly reminiscent of Musks Twitter ultimatum, encouraging them to resign, sent from an insecure server. A bunch of goons, some of them actual teenagers, reportedly got access to the US Treasury systems. (Read-only, reportedly, for now.) Longtime civil servants were locked out of the personnel systems that, by the way, house the personal data for government employees. Musks lackeys are in control of the Office of Personnel Management and the General Services Administration. Theyve gotten ahold of classified information, and are now shutting down the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Musk said he spent the weekend feeding USAID into the wood chipper.Did I get everything? Probably not. For instance, Musk has made statements that he deleted a department, for instance, but since hes a known liar, that may not be true. Between whatever Musk is posting about on X, the pace at which events are occurring, and the general confusion among government employees, giving a full summation of events is impossible. Perhaps between the time this is published and you read it, there will be more bullshit. The clear goal here amounts to a coup over the administrative stateStill, based on the events that have transpired so far, it seems the clear goal here amounts to a coup over the administrative state. My editor reminds me that many of you were not paying attention in civics class and so: our governments famed checks and balances system relies on Congress controlling spending. Musks job was originally framed as making recommendations for programs that Congress could cut. The present Trump administration, which also did not pay attention in civics class, either doesnt know or doesnt care about checks and balances. First, it tried to freeze spending with a legal pronouncement. That was quickly halted by several courts. Then Musk decided to bust into the bureaucracy and start ripping out wires a technical solution to a legal problem. If I wanted to destroy democracy in the US, Im not sure what I would do differently.Does that sound like liberal hysteria? Okay, heres Brian Riedl, an economist who works for the conservative Manhattan Institute, and before that, the Heritage Foundation and Republican Senator Rob Portman: I see a lot of people want to throw out 230 years of constitutional government and replace it with an authoritarian dictator because they have big feelings about the budget and cant be bothered to work through Congress.Musks chaos is compounding other crisesAt Musks functional companies SpaceX and to some degree, Tesla hes put in a playpen where he cant damage the real work. At Twitter, we saw what happened when there was no padding between him and the company: he began switching things off at random, firing engineers willy-nilly (and then trying to rehire them), and turning its revenue into a giant bonfire. Now Musk has brought this strategy to the federal government. The most immediate consequences have been borne by USAID, whose programs include George W. Bushs effort to care for HIV patients in Africa one that is reputed to have saved 20 million lives so far. The building housing USAID has been shuttered. An email explaining the move attributed it to agency leadership, and replies to the email should be directed to an email address that appears to be associated with Gavin Kliger, whose LinkedIn profile identifies him as a special adviser to the director of the Office of Personnel Management and who works for DOGE, according to The Wall Street Journal. And Musks chaos is compounding other crises. Take the two plane crashes in major cities last week one in DC and one in Philadelphia. Days earlier, Musk had pushed out the head of the FAA, who had fined SpaceX for not getting its launch changes approved. The vast majority of air traffic control facilities are understaffed, so it does seem weird that just days before the first crash, those who were on staff had been offered buyouts. After the second crash, a note went out saying air traffic controllers were exempt from a hiring freeze that took place after Trump took office.Consider again the Twitter playbook because this is just the beginning. Lets say Musk gets direct access to treasury payments, which seems very likely to be his aim. Will he stop paying bills, as he did with Twitters leases? Might be fun to discover what the military does when they dont get their paychecks, or how many grandparents get evicted when the Social Security checks dont go out. How many of Musks unsecured servers do you think foreign spies have penetrated already? All of them, maybe? The real question is: who will stop him?As for the Treasury stuff well, if I were a government contractor that wasnt SpaceX, Id be nervous. I mean, if you upset Musk, do you think hes going to pay out your contracts on time?Does Musk have the authority to do this? Doesnt matter. As we know from previous Musk experience, the real question is: who will stop him? So far the answer appears to be no one. The CIA, FBI, and NSA appear to be doing nothing. The US attorneys office in DC is threatening individuals and groups who appear to violate the law in targeting DOGE employees. The Democratic party is making strongly worded statements and issuing letters of concern. The stiffest resistance Musk is getting to his unconstitutional romp through the inner workings of the American government is from the workers themselves both through union lawsuits and through a simple refusal to do as he asks. Some workers are also suing over the insecure server for the fork in the road email. Two unions, the AFL-CIO and the SEIU, are suing the Treasury and Scott Bessent to halt Defendants unlawful ongoing, systematic, and continuous disclosure of personal and financial information contained in Defendants records to Elon Musk.We are all supposed to pretend this is happening in the name of efficiency and cost-savings, and not as a way for Musk to pursue his shitty personal feuds. How posting to X at all hours of the day is efficient is a question Im not sure anyone can answer, but then, its kind of one of the more minor questions in this scenario. And when I say this scenario, I mean that Elon Musk is going to do whatever he wants, and post through it, and threaten anyone who tries to stop him with, apparently, a US attorney.Regulations, basically, should be default gone.Donald Trump, Musks wholly owned puppet, has said Musk wont do anything without his approval. Sure. Okay. I dont see what difference that makes. We all remember executive time, dont we? This man only wants to golf and watch TV.But dont worry, theres to be a new sovereign wealth fund, which seems like a wonderful place for Musk and his Silicon Valley friends to siphon off government money, money that is no longer being used for wasteful purposes like Meals on Wheels or the Head Start program. And Musks failing X could be propped up by making it the official source of government communications. Oh, and regulations, basically, should be default gone, Musk said on a midnight rant on X. In this environment, The Onions headline Elon Musk Offers Self $10 Billion Federal Buyout reads more like a prediction than satire.Whats good for Musk isnt good for the rest of us. His factories are famously unsafe places to work. After he bought Twitter, he drove out security professionals making the platform more vulnerable to fraud. SpaceX has been busily polluting Texas. Throughout the years hes been very clear: hes going to do whatever he wants, whatever the consequences. Now hes bringing that sensibility to the federal government. As long as Musk doesnt have the power to stop payments, he hasnt completely succeeded. About 90-odd years after the original Business Plot to overthrow President Franklin Roosevelt and install a dictator Musk appears to be quite close to finishing the job. So heres the question: are there any real rules in America, at all?See More:

  • Treasury Department sued over DOGE takeover
    www.theverge.com
President Donald Trumps administration is being sued over Elon Musks alleged massive and unprecedented intrusion into the American governments payment systems. The suit, filed in a Washington, DC federal court Monday evening by the advocacy group Public Citizen, calls for the court to stop the unlawful, ongoing, systematic, and continuous disclosure of personal and financial information to Elon Musk and other members of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), or to any other person.Public Citizen filed the suit against the Treasury Department on behalf of the Alliance for Retired Americans, American Federation of Government Employees, and the Service Employees International Union days after reports emerged that Musk and DOGE had gained access to federal payment systems and to millions of Americans Social Security numbers. The suit claims that the Treasury Department, led by recently appointed Secretary Scott Bessent, violated the Privacy Act of 1974 and the Internal Revenue Codes regulations surrounding taxpayer information by letting Musk and DOGE access these systems.People who must share information with the federal government should not be forced to share information with Elon Musk or his DOGE, the complaint reads . And federal law says they do not have to.Lawmakers have also called for investigations into Musks apparent takeover of the Treasury Department. Over the weekend, Sens. Ron Wyden (D-WA) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) wrote to Bessent demanding to know whether he had given Musk full access to the federal governments payment systems. To put it bluntly, these payment systems simply cannot fail, and any politically-motivated meddling in them risks severe damage to our country and the economy, wrote Wyden, the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Finance. I can think of no good reason why political operators who have demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law would need access to these sensitive, mission-critical systems.Wydens letter ended with a list of questions for Bessent, including whether officials associated with Musk or DOGE have requested or been granted access to the Fiscal Services payment systems. Wyden also asked about what information security measures were taken to ensure that Musk and DOGEs access to government payment systems does not result in hackers and foreign spies breaching or otherwise gaining access to the Fiscal Services payment systems. In a separate letter, Warren asked what safeguards are in place to ensure access to these systems isnt abused, as well as what measures are being taken to protect Americans sensitive data, including Social Security numbers. Warren asked that Bessent respond to her questions by February 7th, while Wyden requested a response by February 12th. Neither letter specifies what happens if Bessent refuses to respond.Bradley Moss, a national security lawyer, told The Verge that the administration could face other legal challenges to DOGEs attempts to gut the federal bureaucracy. Organizations whose funding is cut due to the freeze in USAID payments could sue, as could federal employees who get purged by DOGE. Congress, too, could challenge DOGEs efforts to impound funds that Congress appropriated to particular agencies, contracts, or programs, Moss said.President Trump is clearly in a just do it and be legends phase, Moss said. He is pushing all the boundaries to see what he can accomplish before anyone can legally stop him, if ever. It remains to be seen if the courts will check his authoritarian actions, as it is clear Republican majorities in Congress will not.See More:

  • University of Bath Researchers Developed an Efficient and StableMachine Learning Training Method for Neural ODEs with O(1) Memory Footprint
    www.marktechpost.com
Neural Ordinary Differential Equations are significant in scientific modeling and time-series analysis where data changes every other moment. This neural network-inspired framework models continuous-time dynamics with a continuous transformation layer governed by differential equations, which sets them apart from vanilla neural nets. While Neural ODEs have cracked down on handling dynamic series efficiently, cost-effective gradient calculation for backpropagation is a big challenge that limits its utility.Until now, the standard method for N-ODEs has been recursive checkpointing that finds a middle ground between memory usage and computation. However, this method often presents inefficiencies, leading to an increase in both memory and processing time. This article discusses the latest research that tackles this problem through a class of algebraically reversible ODE solvers.Researchers from the University of Bath introduce a novel machine learning framework to address the problem of backpropagation in the State-of-the-art recursive checkpoint methods in Neural ODE solvers. The authors introduce a class of algebraically reversible solvers that allows for the exact reconstruction of the solver state at any time step without storing intermediate numerical operations. These innovations lead to a significant improvement in the overall efficiency of the process with reduced memory consumption and computational overhead. The contrasting feature of this research that outshines this approach is its space complexity. While conventional solvers operate O(n log n), the proposed solver has O(n) complexity for operation and O(1) memory consumption. The proposed solver framework allows any single-step numerical solver to be made reversible by enabling dynamic recomputation of the forward solve during backpropagation. This approach, therefore, ensures exact gradient calculation while achieving high-order convergence and improved numerical stability. The methods working is further detailed: Instead of storing every intermediate state during the forward pass, the algorithm mathematically reconstructs these in reverse order during the backward pass. Furthermore, by introducing a coupling parameter, , the solver maintains numerical stability while accurately tracing the computational path backward. This coupling ensures that information from both the current and previous states is retained in a compact form, enabling exact gradient calculation without the overhead of traditional storage requirements. The research team conducted a series of experiments to validate the claims of these solvers. They performed three experiments focussing on scientific modeling and latent dynamics discovery from the data to compare the accuracy, runtime, and memory cost of reversible solvers to recursive checkpointing. The solvers were tested against the following three experimental setups:Discovery of Generated data from Chandrasekhars White Dwarf EquationApproximation of fundamental data dynamics from a coupled oscillator system through a neural ODE.Identification of chaotic nonlinear dynamics using a chaotic double pendulum datasetThe results of the above experiments testified to the proposed solvers efficiency. Across all tests, these demonstrated superior performance, achieving up to 2.9 times faster training speeds and using up to 22 times less memory than traditional methods. Moreover, the accuracy of the final model remained consistent when compared to the state of the art. The reversible solvers reduced memory usage dramatically and slashed runtime, proving its utility in large-scale, data-intensive applications. The authors also found that adding weight decay to the neural network vector field parameters improved numerical stability for both the reversible method and recursive checkpointing. Conclusion: The paper introduced a new class of algebraic solvers that solves the issues of computational efficiency and gradient accuracy. The proposed framework has an operation complexity of O(n) and memory usage of O(1). This breakthrough in ODE solvers paves the way for more scalable and robust time series and dynamic data models.Check outthePaper. All credit for this research goes to the researchers of this project.
