• Sumo Group ditching original franchises to focus exclusively on co-development work
    www.gamedeveloper.com
UK game studio powerhouse Sumo Group will no longer develop its own properties and will instead focus exclusively on co-development work. The company shared the news in a business update and said it must balance its creative ambitions with shifting "commercial realities" to deliver long-term stability. It explained its studios and workforce will be impacted by the transition but neglected to provide additional details. The news comes six months after Sumo, which is owned by Chinese conglomerate Tencent, laid off 15 percent of its workforce and shuttered Canadian studio Timbre Games."We are committed to minimising this impact as much as possible, exploring all options to retain talent, and supporting those affected with transparency, care, and compassion," reads the business update."This will strengthen our position as a premium development partner, leveraging our expertise to contribute to and create great games for our clients. Whether collaborating on new or established games, co-developing games, providing specialist engineering, or porting services; we are confident in our teams' exceptional talent and our ability to thrive in this next chapter."Sumo Group has produced a number of original titles including Sackboy: A Big Adventure, DeathSprint 66, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Still Wakes the Deep, and Team Sonic Racing. It has also served as a support studio on major franchises such as Forza Horizon, Hitman, and Call of Duty.Sumo styles itself as one of the UK's largest providers of end-to-end creative development and co-development services. It currently has 1,500 workers spread across 18 studios in the UK, Canada, India, and the United Statesincluding Sumo Digital, The Chinese Room, Red Kite Games, Atomhawk, and Auroch Digital. In 2021, the company was purchased by Tencent for $1.27 billion via its Sixjoy Hong Kong Limited subsidiary. At the time, Sumo CEO Carl Cavers said Tencent had a track record of backing management teams and their existing strategies, including the "acceleration" of original franchise development.

  • Adobe Acrobats AI chatbot can now summarize contract jargon
    www.theverge.com
The feature can help users to spot key information in agreements before they sign them.Adobe is adding features to Acrobats AI Assistant that should help users to better understand contracts. The new contract intelligence capabilities allow the PDF management softwares chatbot to automatically recognize when files and scanned documents are contracts and summarize complicated language to make it easier for users to understand. The Acrobat AI Assistant is available as a $4.99 per month add-on for Acrobat users with free or paid individual accounts. The contract intelligence update is available worldwide starting today on desktop, web, and mobile. Only English is supported for now, with more languages to follow, according to Adobe.Adobe says the feature can surface key terms, generate citations and recommended questions for specific documents, and compare changes across up to ten different versions of a contract to check consistency and discrepancies. That should make it easier to spot things in lengthy contracts, such as important dates, specific policies, and charges that may otherwise get buried in walls of text.Adobe says the aim is to save users time that they would otherwise spend on trying to understand the often long and complex documents, citing a recent survey that found 70 percent of consumers have signed agreements without knowing all of the terms within them. Customers open billions of contracts in Adobe Acrobat each month and AI can be a game changer in helping simplify their experience, said Adobe Document Cloud lead Abhigyan Modi.

  • Space is the next frontier in Fantastic Four: First Steps new trailer
    www.theverge.com
Thankfully, the new teaser for Marvels Fantastic Four: First Steps doesnt spoil all that much of the film, but it does give you a sense of just how big a problem Galactus is going to be for the MCU.Rather than rehashing the details of how Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Sues brother Johnny (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) gain their powers, Fantastic Four: First Steps new trailer is more focused on emphasizing how famous the quartet has become after their first mission to space. They arent just superheroes, theyre beloved celebrities whose adventures and scientific achievements have captured the worlds imagination. But theyre also a family who seem to be trying to maintain some semblance of normalcy in spite of how extraordinary their lives have become.Along with a few shots showcasing the teams powerset and their swanky, retrofuturistic digs in the Baxter Building, the trailer features the briefest shots of the planet-deverourer Galactus (Ralph Ineson) making his arrival on Earth. Youd think Marvel might want to show off its new take on the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner), but the studio is probably saving that until were closer to the films July 25th debut.

  • As the Bloodborne PSX Demake Becomes the Latest Fan-Project to Suffer a Copyright Claim, the Creator of Bloodborne's 60fps Mod Has Offered His Copium Official Remake Theory
    www.ign.com
The Bloodborne PSX demake has become the latest Bloodborne-related fan project to be hit with a copyright claim after the Bloodborne 60fps mod was struck last week.Well-known Bloodborne 60fps mod creator Lance McDonald announced last week that hed received a takedown notification on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment asking that I remove links to the patch I posted on the internet, so I've now done so. The DMCA takedown arrived four years after the mod was released. Now, Lilith Walther, creator of Nightmare Kart, which was previously known as Bloodborne Kart, and the eye-catching Bloodborne PSX demake, tweeted to say a YouTube video of the demake was hit with a copyright claim by a company called MarkScan Enforcement.PlayMcDonald followed up to tweet that MarkScan are a company hired by Sony Interactive Entertainment, and the same company that DMCAed my page about the Bloodborne 60fps patch. And now theyve DMCAed an old video about the Bloodborne PSX demake project. Thats pretty wild. What the hell are they doing??Bloodborne is of course one of the biggest conundrums in the video game industry. The FromSoftware masterpiece launched on PS4 to critical and commercial acclaim, but since then Sony hasnt touched it. Fans are desperate for an official next-gen patch that would make the game run at 60fps, up from 30fps, but there are also calls for a remaster and a sequel.Recently, fans managed to get PS4 emulators to deliver something akin to a remaster on PC. The tech experts at Digital Foundry released a video covering a breakthrough in PS4 emulation via ShadPS4, which means Bloodborne is now fully playable start to finish in 60fps. Could this breakthrough have triggered an aggressive response from Sony? IGN has asked Sony for comment, but it has yet to respond.McDonald offered what he called his copium theory, though: that Sony could be working on an official remake. My copium theory is that Sony DMCAed the 60fps patch and the video about the Bloodborne demake so that when they announce a 60fps remake, google searching for bloodborne 60fps and Bloodborne remake wont have collisions with our fan projects, McDonald said.Let me cope. Then: Like if they plan on trademarking bloodborne 60fps and Bloodborne remake they need to actually clean up in order to actually file a trademark request. Right??Despite these latest aggressive actions by Sony, the company has so far offered no indication that it plans to return to Bloodborne in any way. Last month, former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida delivered his Bloodborne no-show theory in an interview with Kinda Funny Games:Bloodborne has always been the most asked thing, Yoshida began. And people wonder why we havent really done anything, even an update or a remaster. Should be easy, right? The company is known for doing so many remasters, right, some people get frustrated.I have only my personal theory to that situation. I left first-party so I dont know whats going on, but my theory is, you know because I remember, you know, Miyazaki-san really, really loved Bloodborne, you know, what he created. So I think he is interested, but hes so successful and hes so busy, so he doesnt want, he cannot do himself, but he does not want anyone else to touch it. So thats my theory. And the PlayStation team respect his wish. So thats my guess, right? Theory. I am not revealing any secret information, to be clear. The upshot is Bloodborne remains dormant nearly 10 years after the first game came out. But is there hope? In interviews, Miyazaki often deflects questions about Bloodborne, pointing to the fact FromSoftware does not own the IP. But in February last year, Miyazaki at least admitted the game would benefit from a release on more modern hardware.Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100. • The Last of Us Season 2's Abby Didn't Bulk Up Because HBO Didn't Need to Emulate Certain Video Game Mechanics, Neil Druckmann Says
    www.ign.com
The HBO adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2 won't feature Abby as such a muscly character as her role in Season 2 doesn't need to emulate certain video game mechanics, showrunner and Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann has said.Druckmann and fellow showrunner Craig Mazin told Entertainment Weekly that actress Kaitlyn Dever didn't need to bulk up for the role because Abby didn't need to feel as distinct mechanically to Ellie."We would've struggled to find someone as good as Kaitlyn to play this role," Druckmann said. "In the game, you have to play both [Ellie and Abby] and we need them to play differently. We needed Ellie to feel smaller and kind of maneuver around, and Abby was meant to play more like Joel in that she's almost like a brute in the way she can physically manhandle certain things."That doesn't play as big of a role in this version of the story because there's not as much violent action moment to moment. It's more about the drama. I'm not saying there's no action here. It's just, again, different priorities and how you approach it."The Last of Us Season 2 Cast: Who's New and Coming Back to the HBO Show?Mazin chimed in too: "I personally think there is an amazing opportunity here to delve into someone who is perhaps physically more vulnerable than the Abby in the game, but whose spirit is stronger. And then the question is: 'Where does her formidable nature come from and how does it manifest?' That's something that will be explored now and later."The now and later comment likely refers to HBO's plans to extend The Last of Us Part 2 beyond a single season, unlike the critically acclaimed Season 1 which covered the entirety of the original game. Mazin has said previously that Part 2 features a lot more story to cover, so while Season 3 isn't greenlit as of yet, they've built Season 2 with a "natural breakpoint" after just seven episodes.Much toxicity surrounds the character of Abby in particular, with some choosing to voice their frustration at the fictional character's actions by harassing Naughty Dog employees including Druckmann and actress Laura Bailey. This included threats and abuse targeting her, her parents, and her two-year-old son.HBO was even wary of this reception while filming Season 2, as Dever was given extra security in case of escalated action. "There's so many strange people in this world because there are people that actually genuinely hate Abby, who is not a real person. Just a reminder: not a real person," said actress Isabel Merced, who plays Dina in Season 2.Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. He'll talk about The Witcher all day.

  • Emilia Prez and the Oscars Other Scandalous Campaign Takedowns and Self-Sabotages
    www.denofgeek.com
Its Oscar season again in Hollywood, although it can hardly be said that this year has seen a smooth, celebratory homestretch leading to the big event. Between the results of the 2024 election and the horrific fires that swept through Los Angeles almost as soon as 2025 began, it almost seems as if Tinseltowns biggest, most congratulatory night is more a desperate attempt to pull something, anything, good out of the last year instead of a genuine commemoration of 2024s cinematic achievements.Which is a shame, since 2024 was in fact a pretty damn good year for film. But even in the good times for Hollywood, even in the years when cinema was a shining beacon for culture, art, and significant conversation throughout the world, Oscar season has always brought with it the threat of scandal, sabotage, and self-destruction. Thats because the pettiness and greed also inherent in the fabric of the industry rears its ugly head in the form of one films camp trying to bring down anothers, all in pursuit of the prestige, attention, and (presumably) wealth associated with landing one of those little gold statues. This year is no different: as well discuss later, one film alone has been rocked by no less than three scandals while two others were the subject of relatively minor kerfuffles than probably avoided becoming larger issues thanks to the spectacular crash-and-burn of what was until recently the presumed Oscar frontrunner. Before we get to that, however, heres a brief rundown of some of the major times that Oscar hopefuls were either brought down by outside forces, other films, or themselves.Citizen Kane vs. William Randolph HearstDont for a minute think that campaigns to take down Oscar nominees began in the modern Hollywood era. When director, producer, co-writer, and star Orson Welles masterpiece Citizen Kane was released in 1941, the title character was speculated (and later confirmed) to be based at least partially on then-powerful publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst. And Hearst did not take kindly to Welles portrayal.Hearsts full-on assault on the film and Welles went far beyond the Oscars. The publisher, who wielded journalism as a weapon and whose newspapers often played fast and loose with the truth, rallied some of his loyal friends in Hollywood to purchase the film and destroy the negative. When that didnt happen, he tried to bully theater owners into not showing it, which worked to some degree. He also banned any mention of it or advertising for it from his media empire. And course he went after Welles himself, questioning the 25-year-old auteurs patriotism and even allegedly planting an underage girl in his hotel room with photographers outside ready to pounce. Citizen Kane was nominated for nine Oscars, including Best Picture, Director, and Actor, but it only won a single trophy: for Best Original Screenplay. And every time Welles or the movie was mentioned during the ceremony, people in the audience booed. Hearsts campaign had long-lasting effects as well: a box office disappointment upon its release, Citizen Kane vanished from view. It would be another 25 years before critical reappraisals tagged it as one of the indisputable masterpieces in all of film history.Good Will Hunting vs. As Good As It GetsMatt Damon and Ben Affleck were kicking around Hollywood as struggling yet promising young actors when they wrote and starred in Gus Van Sants Good Will Hunting (1997) alongside Robin Williams. The latter won Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars while Affleck and Damon went home with the prize for Best Original Screenplayalthough somebody did their damnedest to hint that the two childhood friends from Boston had not, in fact, penned the screenplay on their own.A whisper campaign suggested that both screenwriting legend William Goldman (All the Presidents Men, The Princess Bride) and The Silence of the Lambs scribe Ted Tally either contributed to or outright wrote Good Will Hunting. Goldman said he offered some notes on the piece to the pair and nothing more, while Tally went directly to Variety to deny a hit piece published in the trade, which insinuated that he had penned the dialogue. The smear didnt take, since Affleck and Damon did win. But Damon told The New York Times years later that he was informed that people working on the campaign for As Good as it Gets (but not, notably, its director James Brooks) were behind the campaign.Shakespeare in Love vs. Saving Private RyanIt should come as no surprise that Harvey Weinstein, the former Miramax and Weinstein Company head (not to mention convicted sex offender and all-around pile of human garbage), was behind some of the nastiest Oscar sabotage campaigns of all time, and his assault on 1998 frontrunner Saving Private Ryan in service of his own Oscar contender, Shakespeare in Love, is now legendary.A powerful, immersive World War II epic, Ryan was seemingly on a glide path to a Best Picture win, with Steven Spielberg also on track to notch his second Best Director statue, until Weinstein allegedly launched a campaign that was the public relations equivalent of Ryans recreation of the Normandy landing. While pushing the fun but ultimately frothy (and now almost forgotten) Shakespeare with an endless assembly line of screenings, parties, and glad-handing events, he also allegedly began a whisper campaign suggesting that everything in Ryan past the 20-minute mark (i.e. the opening sequence on the beaches of Normandy) was more or less worthless.Spielberg, being a decent human being and not a bottom-feeding shitstain like Weinstein, refused to strike back, but unfortunately the shitstains plan worked. While the Beard did go home with his well-deserved Best Director prize, Ryan lost best picture to Shakespeare. In the fallout, the modern, ceaseless and aggressive Oscar campaign was born. Its a tragedy worthy of the Bard himself, even if the rom-com about him wasnt.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!A Beautiful Mind vs. The Truth (?)Questioning the presumed veracity of a biopic or historical drama is something we do all the time now in this era of instant online reactions. Still, it must be stressed again and again (although it never seems to sink in) that narrative movies are not documentaries; they dont purport to offer the unvarnished truth of a persons life or certain events in history, nor are they obliged to. But that didnt stop a wicked smear campaign against Ron Howards A Beautiful Mind (2001) in which Russell Crowe played the brilliant but schizophrenic mathematician (and Nobel Prize winner), John Nash. With A Beautiful Mind considered a frontrunner in the Best Picture, Director, Actor, and Supporting Actress races, the film was attacked for sanitizing Nashs character (unsubstantiated rumors circulated that he was both an antisemite and a closeted gay man), whitewashing the portrayal of his wife (who was born in El Salvador but was played by a decidedly non-Latino Jennifer Connelly), and generally fooling around with the accuracy of its story. The attacks came from all sides, ranging from publications as disparate as The Guardian and The Drudge Report, and of course it was suspected that Harvey Weinstein was behind it. In the end, it didnt matter: the movie, Howard, and Connelly all won their respective categories. Still, some speculate that it cost Crowe a second Best Actor Oscar, although we wonder if he could have ever really beaten a performance as formidable as Denzel Washingtons in Training Day. Slumdog Millionaire vs. IndiaDanny Boyles Slumdog Millionaire, released in 2008, tells the story of an 18-year-old boy (Dev Patel) from the streets of Mumbai who ends up winning the grand prize on the Hindi version of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? while reuniting with the love of his life (Frieda Pinto). Flashy, original, and highly energetic, the film collected a hefty eight Oscars at the 2009 ceremony, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. But it didnt get to those lofty heights without some attacks along the way, although whether those were launched by rival campaigns remains unclear.First, the film was accused of downplaying the work of co-director Loveleen Tandan, who the producers insisted was billed that way for cultural reasons in India. There were also accusations of cultural appropriation, with a film steeped in Indian culture helmed by a Westerner. But the most serious allegations suggested that child actors Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail, who both lived in the slums of Mumbai and played younger versions of two of the films leads, were paid next to nothing for their work and remained in the slums after production was completed.Boyle and producer Christian Colson pushed back, saying that trust funds had been set up to pay for the actors education, health care, and other needs. Both Ali and Ismail reportedly got out of the slums eventually and into houses paid for through their funds while Slumdog won all those Oscars. Still, we wonder whether the film could survive such a gauntlet of accusations today. The Hurt Locker vs. AvatarThe Hurt Locker producer Nicolas Chartier ended up getting himself banned from the Oscars the year that his moviean intense, terrifying portrait of a small squad of explosive disposal specialists under both physical and psychological fire during the Iraq Warwas nominated for Best Picture. Thats because Chartier sent out a mass email (a breach of Academy rules) asking voters to throw their support behind director Kathryn Bigelows tiny ($15 million budget), independent Hurt Locker instead of James Camerons massive, $250 million sci-fi behemoth Avatar.A retaliatory campaign against The Hurt Locker itself began in the press, with the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, and other outlets all publishing hit pieces disputing the accuracy of the film and the actions of the characters played by Jeremy Renner, Brian Geraghty, and Anthony Mackie. Both Avatar distributor 20th Century Fox and (you guessed it) Inglourious Basterds campaigner Harvey Weinstein were rumored to be behind the attacks, although that was never proven. The Hurt Locker did in fact become the little movie that could, winning Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. In other words, despite being unable to attend the ceremony, Chartier still got his little gold man.Emilia Prez vs. Everybody, Including Emilia PrezThis years Oscar season started off in relatively benign fashion, with early frontrunner Anora the topic of a heated discussion over whether there should have been an intimacy coordinator on set due to the films copious nudity and sex scenes (stars Mikey Madison and Mark Eydelshteyn both declined one). Following that, fellow frontrunner The Brutalist came under fire when the films Oscar-nominated editor, Dvid Jancs, inexplicably blurted out in an interview that the film had used AI to enhance stars Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones Hungarian-language dialogue. Director Brady Corbet was forced to push back on the revelation in a climate where AI is already viewed with fear and suspicion by most creatives. But both those mini-scandals have remarkably faded quickly after the maelstrom around Emilia Prez arrived. With the announcement of the movie receiving an astounding (and in our opinion, undeserved) 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Director, a spigot of scandalous gasoline has been unleashed on the Netflix films awards campaign. First French director Jacques Audiard was accused of exploiting Mexican culture in the movie, not helping matters when he called Spanish the language of the poor and migrants. Then lead actress Karla Sofa Gascnthe first openly transgender person ever nominated for an Oscarbaselessly accused unnamed people in the camp of Im Still Here star Fernanda Torres, also a Best Actress contender, of tearing me and Emilia Prez down.Gascn, however, didnt need any help wrecking her own Oscar campaign (and career?) when an online journalist uncovered a long string of posts on her X (formerly Twitter) account that amounted to nothing less than a stream of Islamophobia, racism, and cruelty, including disparaging remarks about Muslims in her home country of Spain, vicious comments on police officers murdering George Floyd in the U.S. in 2020, and even barbs at the 2021 Oscar ceremony, which she described as an Afro-Korean festival (in reference to newly minted Oscar winners Daniel Kaluuya and Youn Yuh-jung). Even though Gascn deleted the posts and finally deactivated her accountwhile issuing a half-hearted apologyit seems, at press time, as if the damage to both Gascn and the film has been done. There is already speculation over whether fellow campaigns might have helped fan the social media spread of Gascons comments until they were picked up by major mainstream media outlets. But, in all honesty, in the modern age of online culture, it doesnt even take a Harvey Weinstein to stick the knife in. Your own behavior and hostile stan culture on the internet can do the job for them. The 97th Academy Awards ceremony will be held on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

  • Farrow & Ball Just Released 12 New Colors. Here's What They Are
    www.elledecor.com
Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE Decor editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.Farrow & Ball is adding 12 gorgeous new paint colors to its paletteand were rethinking every room in our house. Three of the colors were pulled from the Farrow & Ball archive and nine are entirely new shades, ranging from deep terracottas to crisp blues, earthy greens to delicate pinks. These new additions, the first batch of new colors since 2022, will be available February 27. The storied British paint manufacturer is known for its carefully curated palette of 132 rich paint colors. Their decision to add a dozen additional shades to that list (retiring 12 older colors to make room) is definitely worth the wait. Theyre sultry, theyre earthy, and they shouldnt feel all that foreign. Thats because when looking for a muse, Farrow & Ball color curator Joa Studholme and creative director Charlotte Cosby went right back to the basics: Everyday household items. Whether its a dependable garden tool, a run-of-the-mill clothes starch, folkloric fireplaces, a humble duster, or a fresh batch of sweet marmalade, quotidian things provided infinite inspiration. James MerrellScallop is a soft salmon hue (a lighter interpretation of Dead Salmon) that was inspired by the gentle curved shape of shellfish. Take Scallop, a soft salmon hue (a lighter interpretation of Dead Salmon) that was inspired by the gentle curved shape of shellfish. Then theres Dipper, a down-to-earth green that got its name from a tool beloved by gardeners to create holes for planting seeds or bulbs. We especially love Douter, a smoky gray-green tone that was inspired by the soot and tarnished brass of a traditional candle snuffer. And yes, they really did name one color after starch: Sizing, a crisp, blue-based neutral with blue undertones, is proof that Farrow & Ball can make anything sophisticated. You can almost smell clean laundry when you look at this color, Studholme laughs. James MerrellKakelugn is a light blue that was named after the folkloric fires of Sweden. Now that we spend more time in our homes, I felt it was time to celebrate the more commonplace colors, to find joy in the familiar, often from the world of utility and function, Studholme says. These colors are ordinary treasures to me, often overlooked in our busy day to day lives. Her favorite? Marmelo, a grounded orange hue named after the marmelo quince. I cant help but think about the bountiful shelves of a larder bursting with jars of pickles and jams when I look at it, Studholme adds. Its warming and restorative. As the brand is known for its cheerfully quirky paint names and whimsical word play (our favorites are Mole's Breath, Arsenic, and Sulking Pink Room), they havent disappointed in this new color round-up. We especially love Kakelugn, which was named after the folkloric fires of Sweden; and Duster, a deep ochre inspired by the familiar yellow cloth used to clean homes worldwide. The three colors that have been resurrected from the brands archive reflect the growing trend towards earthy hues and more muted tones achievable with natural dyes. Sap Green, is a deep olive; Etruscan Red is a deep brown-red; and Broccoli Brown is a dark stone. Despite being rich, they have a quietness which sits particularly well alongside many natural materials, Studholme says. James MerrellDouter, a smoky grey-green tone, was inspired by the soot and tarnished brass of a traditional candle snuffer. While Studholme and Cosby delight in seeing their colors come to life in their customers various creative interpretations, they particularly look forward to seeing how designers are no longer inhibited by painting walls in one color with a white trim. Nothing can give more pleasure than the bottom half of a wall painted in earthy Etruscan Red, with gentle Scallop on the top halfand perhaps the ceiling in Douter, Full Gloss, Studholme says. We consider this permission to throw the color rulebook out the window and lean into your inner marmalade-loving heart. From Herman Melvilles 19th-century literary classic Moby Dick to memoirist Herman Rauchers Academy Award-winning 1971 film Summer of 42, Nantucket has long played a starring role in the lexicon of American culture, with its idyllic harbor and views that stretch out across the Atlantic Ocean. For Houston-based couple Clare Casademont and Michael Metz, its been a three-act love story with the island that began as a series of memorable summer rentals in Siasconset. We started coming here in 2000 when our daughter, Isabelle, was about four years old, says Metz, a veteran energy trading executive. Then we eventually bought a small house on the south shore in Surfsidean older part of the island with small houses and very unpretentious. But the modest home always lacked sufficient entertaining space as well as the room to display pieces from the couples art collection.Read McKendreeOriginally this room was sliced up into three spaces, so we opened it up into one larger space to make sure you could see the spectacular view, says Kotchen. It was hard to have guests thereeveryone was on top of each other, says Casademont, a former journalist and retired social worker who serves on the board of the Menil Collection in Houston. It was more like a cottage than a home. We couldnt add on to itand there was only so much I could do with the decor. Read McKendreeWe decided on a banquette as their primary dining spaceits certainly not something everyone would be open to having, Kotchen says. But its super comfortable, faces due north to the harbor and they liked the idea of not having a grand dining table with 12 chairs that looked like something out of a showroom. About five years ago, the couple began looking in earnest for their next home and, despite making a few half-hearted offers that, thankfully, didnt stick, nothing on the market inspired them. That is, until a totally backward property hit the market in the centrally located neighborhood of Monomoy. The classic shingle-style home, built in 1999, required a gut renovation to fit their lifestyle and to take full advantage of its unparalleled location. Like many of our clients on the island, Clare and Michael are people who believe in Nantucket and spend a lot of time here, explains Andrew Kotchen, co-founder of the ELLE DECOR A-List architecture and design firm Workshop/APD which maintains a presence on the island, in addition to offices dotting the map from New York to Florida. The home wasnt that old; it had great bones and really great curb appeal. But the interior layout was incredibly customized for the previous owners and the whole house was [laid out] totally backward and didnt make sense. Tour This Serene Nantucket HomeA serious reconfiguration ensuedincluding the relocation of the kitchen and a second-floor bedroom expansion. It was a complete, extensive renovation, says Metz. We opened up all the walls and took it right down to the studs. "We wanted a beach house, not a museum."Gone went thevery compartmentalized room layout. We took down two chimneys that were blocking the views. When you walked through the front door you couldnt see the water because there was a wall, so naturally that came down too, explains Kotchen, who has been designing homes on the island for 25 years. Read McKendreeAndrew understands Nantucket and he understands contemporary [design] in Nantucket, adds Casademont. And while I carefully thought about the furnishings and placement of art, we wanted a beach house, not a museum, and he got that. The result is an airy, light-filled escape that embraces the couples love for art, design and the natural beauty that attracted them to the island all those years ago. Theres a sense of serenity and calmness when youre inside, shares Metz. Part of it is the location, but really its the houseits something that will stay in the family for a long, long time.
