• Netflix scuttles plans to add six previously announced games to its service
    www.engadget.com
Netflix has been revamping its games division in recent months, including making adjustments to the library of titles that it offers subscribers at no extra cost. The company has canceled release plans for six games that were previously bound for iOS and Android through its platform. As first reported by What's On Netflix, the company will no longer bring Thirsty Suitors, Compass Point: West and Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game to its library. Nor will it offer three titles from Klei Entertainment: Don't Starve Together, Lab Rat and Rotwood. A Netflix spokesperson confirmed the decision to Engadget, noting that nixing the planned additions was "just a natural part of adjusting our portfolio as we learn more about what our members like."Tales of the Shire, a cozy life sim game featuring hobbits, is still coming to Steam, Nintendo Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S next month. Action RPG Thirsty Suitors received positive reviews when it debuted on PC and consoles in 2023. As for Don't Starve Together, that was a co-op expansion to Don't Starve, a hit survival game from 2013.Netflix has been retooling its games division after bringing in a new leader for the department last summer. It has removed several games from its library and it emerged in October that it had shut its AAA studio, which was dubbed Team Blue. Meanwhile, Leanne Loombe an executive who helped bring the likes of Hades and Grand Theft Auto to Netflix's library while leading second- and third-party development and publishing efforts recently became the head of games at Annapurna Interactive following an exodus there.Meanwhile, Netflix aims to add more high-profile mainstream games to its catalog the WWE 2K series is on the way later this year. Other areas of focus include its well-known franchises, narrative-driven games, party and couch co-op titles and games for kids, per a recent earnings call. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/gaming/netflix-scuttles-plans-to-add-six-previously-announced-games-to-its-service-192946233.html?src=rss

  • Tech layoffs 2025: Salesforce to slash 1,000 jobs as it joins Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and more in cutting roles
    www.fastcompany.com
The new year isnt getting off to a great start when it comes to employment in the tech industry. Tech giant Salesforce is reportedly getting ready to cut 1,000 roles at the company. The expected job cuts are just the latest in a line of layoffs already initiated by well-known companies in the technology sector, including Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft. Heres what you need to know.Salesforce to reportedly lay off over 1,000 employeesToday, Bloomberg reported that Salesforce, the worlds top customer relationship management software company, will be cutting more than 1,000 positions at the company. The news came from an unnamed source and was not an official announcement from Salesforce.Nothing is known about which departments will be hit hardest by the cuts. However, a Bloomberg source said that any displaced workers will be allowed to apply for other positions at the company. Weve reached out to Salesforce for comment. Its also worth noting that these cuts arent a net job reduction at Salesforce, as the company is also currently actively hiring salespeople to promote its AI offerings to customers.Salesforce reported having 73,000 employees as of January 2024, which means that a reduction of 1,000 personnel equates to fewer than 1% of its workforce.Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and more cut jobsDespite being fewer than seven weeks into the new year, many major tech companies have already announced plans to reduce their workforce or cut staff in 2025. In mid-January, Facebook parent company Meta Platforms announced it would cut about 5% of its workforce. A 5% reduction in staff equates to layoffs totaling about 3,600 people, noted Bloomberg. As of last September, Meta employed about 72,000 workers. Announcing the cuts in an internal memo, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, Ive decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low-performers faster. And Meta isnt alone. In January, Microsoft also laid off some workers it deemed low performers, Business Insider reported. It is unknown how many employees at the Redmond company would lose their roles. Weve reached out to Microsoft for comment.Amazon in January also announced it would eliminate staff, Bloomberg reported, with dozens in its communications department being targeted. And its not just the big tech giants. Smaller tech companies have also announced layoffs since the new year began. Those companies include payments platform Stripe, which is eliminating 300 positions, and Placer.ai, the Israeli location analytics firm, which is laying off 150 workers.A repeat of 2022-2024?The large number of high-profile tech companies that have announced layoffs in the early days of 2025 has understandably given rise to anxieties of those in the industry who lived through the massive job cuts implemented by the industry between 2022 and 2024, when hundreds of thousands of tech workers lost their jobs. What workers now want to know is if 2025 will be a repeat of those years. At this point, thats impossible to answer. However, the 2022-2024 period of mass tech industry layoffs was generally spurred by overhiring during the pandemic years when many tech companies saw a rapid uptick in users and customers. In 2025, the greatest threats of job layoffs dont come from pandemic-induced overhiring as much as they do from the rising specter of AI and its ability to replace human workers. It remains to be seen whether AI will pose a serious risk to tech industry jobs this year.As for layoffs in the tech industry, layoffs tracking site Layoffs.fyi says that so far in 2025, 31 tech companies have laid off just over 7,000 employees. That compares to the 152,000 employees laid off across various companies in 2024 and the 264,000 and 165,000 laid off in 2023 and 2022, respectively.

  • Omelet surcharge: Waffle House adds extra cost of 50 cents per egg as bird flu wreaks havoc on breakfast prices
    www.fastcompany.com
The price of eggs isnt just surging at the grocery store. Its hitting your favorite chains, too: Now, some Waffle House restaurants are adding surcharges on orders that include eggs.According to a statement Waffle House posted at restaurants, and emailed to Fast Company, it will be adding 50 cents per egg to customers tabs. The continuing egg shortage caused by HPAI (bird flu) has caused a dramatic increase in egg prices, Waffle House said in the statement. Rather than increasing prices across the menu, this is a temporary targeted surcharge tied to the unprecedented rise in egg prices. The statement continued, Customers and restaurants are being forced to make difficult decisions. We are continuously monitoring egg prices and will adjust or remove the surcharge as market conditions allow. While inflation has driven up prices at the grocery store, bird flu is the main reason why egg prices remain high. During his campaign, President Trump vowed to bring down the price of groceries across the board, but egg prices have continued to climb since Inauguration Day. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, in the week ending January 18, the price of a dozen eggs was up to $5.29. The previous month, the same item cost $4.15.As farmers contend with lower output, due in part to millions of hens being slaughtered as a result of bird flu, some shoppers are finding empty shelves where the cartons of eggs once were. And some stores are placing limits on how many cartons customers can buy. Now, restaurants are also finding their own ways to cope with the egg shortageespecially breakfast chains, which serve them by the millions. According to Waffle Houses website, eggs are its most popular menu item: It serves 272 million of them each year.A pricier breakfastThis week, as Trump imposed tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada (before pausing said tariffs on the latter two countries), theres been much talk about what might happen to groceries, gas, and more in the U.S. If the hefty tariffs hold, experts warn it could cause prices of certain grocery items that largely come from outside of the U.S. to surge.Kelly Beaton, the chief content officer at The Food Institute, told Fox Business that businesses, like grocery stores, may also pass higher costs onto the customer. One item likely to get a lot pricier, Beaton said, is cereal, since its a common import from all three countries that Trump has targeted with tariffs. That means its possible that breakfast could get even more expensive, even at the most affordable chain restaurants.

  • Gensler to convert former Pfizer HQ into apartments in New York
    www.dezeen.com
American architecture studio Gensler has revealed designs for an office-to-residential conversion of the former Pfizer headquarters in Midtown Manhattan, which will hold 1,600 apartments across two towers.Located across 219 and 229 East 42nd Street in East Midtown, the project encompasses expanding and converting a 33-storey tiered tower and an adjoining ten-storey tower into a mixed-use development.Gensler has unveiled a rendering of a large office-to-residential conversion in Midtown ManhattanThe rendering shows the complex's exterior with its stepped 33-storey at the front and the smaller tower tucked behind it.According to Gensler, the converted development will contain around 1,600 apartment units, 25 per cent of which will be affordable, and amenities such as a rooftop pool and fitness centre."Conversions offer the promise of helping to transform more areas that were historically centralized business districts into vibrant, 24/7 neighborhoods," said Gensler principal Robert Fuller. "Although there has been a big focus on conversions in recent years, it really is not a new concept.""New York City has a long history of repurposing outdated buildings to create new housing. We envision a future where office conversions in Midtown and the Financial District hold a similarly cherished place in the history of the city."Read: Gensler completes Austin's tallest skyscraperGensler will act as design architect, architect of record and interior architect on the project, while Metro Loft Development LLC and David Werner Real Estate Investments are the project owner and developers, respectively. The two buildings were previously home to Pfzier's New York headquarters before the pharmaceutical brand moved across the city into The Spiral skyscraper designed by BIG, in 2o23.The project is slated 2027 completion.Office building conversions are growing in popularity across the United States as cities grapple with underused and vacant spaces. The city of Chicago recently announced initiatives that incentivise developers to convert downtown office buildings into affordable housing, while New York City announced similar programming in 2023.Elsewhere in the city, an art deco office skyscraper was converted into residential use in the Financial District by Developer Harry Macklowe ofMacklowe Properties.Other work recently completed by Gensler includes the tallest tower in Austin and a sprawling campus for the new Walmart headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas. The image is by StreetsenseThe post Gensler to convert former Pfizer HQ into apartments in New York appeared first on Dezeen.

  • Batmobile-inspired Renault Filante Record 2025 is the worlds most energy-efficient performance EV
    www.yankodesign.com
This Renault concept gives off the classic Batmobile vibes from Tim Burtons next box-office-breaking hit. Although there is no connection between the French automaker and Batman movies, still this concept prototype aiming to break all records for EV power consumption and range could make it to the big screen someday. Dubbed Renault Filante Record 2025, the performance EV derives inspiration from some of the best Renault vehicles all these decades. The headlights of this long-nosed EV are based on the 1925 40 CV des Records, the overall stance is borrowed from the 1934 Nervasport des Records, and the fenders are a spitting image of the 1956 Etoile Filante. Measuring 201.5 inches from the tail to the nose, the cars exterior bodyshell is designed for maximum aerodynamic efficiency. As per Sandeep Bhambra, Renaults director of advanced design, the EV is a sculpture in motion, inspired by fighter planes and the speed records of the nineteenth century, it reflects both performance and timeless elegance. The vehicle is a true representation of the brands adventurous past and ongoing innovation.Designer: RenaultEven though Filante Record 2025 looks bulky as hell, its just 2,204 pounds with the battery alone weighing 1,322 pounds. That means the dry weight is just 882 pounds thanks to the lightweight chassis crafted from aluminum, carbon, and steel alloys. Engineers at the factory have used a high-strength aluminum alloy called Scalmolloy for 3D printing the components of this car. On the inside, the EV is nothing short of breathtaking with a unique hammock-inspired drivers seat that cocoons you in the cockpit, taking the shape of the body for maximum comfort and customized sitting experience. The aerospace-inspired design of the cabin flows down to the seat which is supported by carbon blades wrapped in textile. In the bend position, all the driver inputs are controlled with the hands. Yes, the 3D-printed steering wheel has a sci-fi yoke design with protruding handles on each side to control the cruise control input, acceleration, and braking. Relying on both steering through steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire technologies, the EV further sheds curb weight as no mechanical components for steering input or braking are required. In the middle of this setup is a flexible and transparent panoramic screen that displays vital driving inputs and other parameters important for vehicle operation. Being attached to the protective cockpit bubble, the steering wheel automatically raises when the driver opens the door.Renault has also crafted an air circulation system to keep the cabin well-ventilated without the need for the installation of an AC system to further reduce the weight. The blue hues turn to purple depending on the angle of viewing or the amount of light falling on the skin, giving the EV illusion of being in motion even when it is stationary. Renault Filante Record 2025 is all set to make its debut at the Rtromobile Motor Show in Paris scheduled from February 5th to 9th. The pursuit for efficiency and speed records will commence in Spring 2025 via wind tunnel testing, so well hang on till then to bring more about this beastly electric car.The post Batmobile-inspired Renault Filante Record 2025 is the worlds most energy-efficient performance EV first appeared on Yanko Design.
