I do not care for HERBIE. And furthermore, I dont think it makes any sense for him to be in Fantastic Four: First Steps.Let me explain.We have told you about HERBIE before here at Polygon, but lets recap anyway. The little robot guy, who appears in the trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps making cute noises and cooking soup or whatever, first appeared in an animated TV show called The New Fantastic Four. The most important thing to know about HERBIEs origin is that he was on the show instead of the Human Torch, because of rights issues (there was going to be a Human Torch movie, but that didnt pan out). This situation arguably set up HERBIE to be hated by people like me. Hes there because we dont get to have a cooler character there. Not good! Yet you cant very well put the word four in the title of a show and not have four characters on the titular team, so the animators had to come up with something. They came up with a a love-him-or-hate-him robot sidekick who has what I can only describe as Scrappy-Doo energy.The New Fantastic Four first aired in 1978, and it was for children, so its depiction of the Marvel universe was quite a bit more basic and less nuanced than the comic books. Episodes began with an introduction of the three characters youd recognize, with a narrator describing their powers (a mighty-muscled powerhouse called The Thing, and so on). Last and definitely least, the narrator would describe HERBIE simply as the newest member of the group. Yes, HERBIE came along on that ill-fated space flight with Sue, Reed, and Ben, but did he get powers as a result of it? No, not really.Unlike in the trailer for First Steps, the original animated HERBIE could also talk. He has a whiny little robot voice. He says things like, My sensors tell me something is not right, or, This does not compute, all the time. Not a fun guy to be around. Giving HERBIE a series of cute noises instead of a voice in First Steps was probably for the best, although its not clear why Ben Grimm can (seemingly) understand him in this trailer. Why does Ben Grimm speak droid? Does everyone in this world speak droid?I should acknowledge that even though HERBIE only existed due to a rights issues workaround and didnt add much to the team in terms of powers or personality, he did end up in the comic books after The New Fantastic Four introduced him. And hes not the first comic book character who originated elsewhere first (e.g. Harley Quinn, X-23/Laura Kinney, and many more). There may very well be people who love comic-books HERBIE (I am not one of those people).Its just hard for me to get past the weirdness of HERBIEs initial conception. He only existed because the Human Torch wasnt there. If the Human Torch is there, why would HERBIE need to exist? And, more specifically, in a movie thats set in the 1960s, why am I being cursed by the inclusion of HERBIE, who didnt exist until 1978 and even then only existed because we were all being punished by the development of a Human Torch movie that never materialized?I say all of this, and yet, perhaps HERBIE is going to end up being pivotal to this entire movies plot a plot that currently isnt clear from this initial trailer. Plus he is cute, in part because this version of HERBIE doesnt talk (which means he cant say annoying stuff), and that will probably help other people get past whatever issue they might have had with the guy in his original animated form. Not me, though. I cant forget. Sorry.

Thats one reason why about half of all car buyers finance their purchase, and why we collectively owe an astounding $1.644 trillion in auto loan debt.But thats also why about 38% of car buyers bought their vehicles with cash. Cash offers some advantages, especially if youre looking to avoid interest and monthly payments that can mess with your budget. But if you decide to buy your next car without financing it in any way, theres one thing you should absolutely never do: Tell the dealership.The benefits of buying a car with cashBuying a car with cash doesnt mean you dump an oil drum of pennies on someones desk, it just means youre not financing the purchase with a loan. Theres absolutely no reason you cant do this as long as you have the funds, and buying with cash has some serious benefits:No monthly loan payments. If youve ever financed a car, you know that paying several hundred bucks a month can put a crimp in your finances for years to come.No interest. Paying cash means you dont have to pay extra on top of the price of the car.Avoid overspending. When youre financing a car, salespeople usually keep you focused on whether you can afford the monthly payment, which can obscure how much youre actually paying for the car. But is this the funnest way to stop seeing AI in search results? Fuck yeah it is. And it's perfect if you sometimes want to see AI results, but need a way to exclude them on a case-by-case basis. Autonomous vehicle company Cruise is laying off around half of its workforce, according to reporting by TechCrunch. The cuts even extend to the CEO and other top executives. This is part of a major restructuring effort by parent company GM that will eventually see a total shutdown of operations.These layoffs are expected to impact well over 1,000 people and include CEO Marc Whitten, chief safety officer Steve Kenner and global head of public policy Rob Grant. Chief technologist Mo Elshenawy is also being laid off, but will stay on until the end of April to help with the transition. To that end, some of Cruises workforce and resources will carry on. They are being shuffled to the Super Cruise team, which is GMs driver assistance system.These layoffs dont come as too much of a surprise, given that GM already announced it was giving up on the development of robotaxis. The company, however, hasn't stopped chasing the dream of autonomous vehicles. GM is still planning on rolling out driverless cars for personal use at some point in the future.Cruise has had a rough last couple of years. The company faced scrutiny after one of its robotaxis struck a pedestrian and dragged them 20 feet. Prior to the crash, the companys algorithm was fairly notorious for being buggy, as it repeatedly failed to recognize children.The ensuing investigation forced Cruise to stop all operations for its manned robotaxi service. GM was fined $1.5 million for omitting key details about the aforementioned crash. There were also serious layoffs.
