  • Developer successfully runs Doom on Apples Lightning to HDMI adapter
    9to5mac.com
Youve probably heard someone say but can it run Doom? Thats because running Doom on the most unexpected platforms and devices has become a fun challenge among developers. Now someone has done something really surprising: theyve run Doom on an Apple Lightning to HDMI adapter.Running Doom on Apples Lightning to HDMI adapterIn a video shared on YouTube (via MacRumors), a developer shows the classic game running on Apples Lightning to HDMI adapter, which can be used to output video from old iPhones and iPads. However, since the Lightning connector doesnt have the bandwidth needed to transmit HDMI video, Apple has put a SoC in the adapter to compress the output video. The developer explains that Apples Lightning to HDMI adapter runs a stripped-down version of iOS. Essentially, what the developer did was jailbreak the adapters SoC, which unsurprisingly has its own security protections. As a result, it was possible to install and run Doom using the chip inside the adapter. The game footage was rendered on an external monitor plugged into the adapter.Although most people probably dont really want to play Doom using an adapter, its nice to see that a piece of hardware as simple as the chip inside a dongle can run old games that used to require a proper computer. In 2016, another developer managed to run Doom on the MacBook Pros Touch Bar.You can check out the result in the video below:On a website called Can It Run Doom, you can find projects by developers who have run the game on calculators and even digital price tags. Its worth noting that Apple still sells the Lightning to HDMI adapter for $49, but you can find it for $39 on Amazon if you still need one for some reason. What other devices would you like to see running Doom? • VPN Interest Is Soaring for This X-Rated Reason
    www.cnet.com
The new year brought with it new laws, notably a Florida law requiring age verification in order to access adult-content websites. Florida is just the latest state to restrict adult sites, but it's kicked off a wave of interest in finding ways around the rule, especially since Pornhub -- one of the largest and most popular adult sites -- has blocked access in Florida. VPNs, a way of keeping your internet activity private, are now more in demand than ever. What is a VPN?VPN stands for virtual private network. It's like connecting to the internet through a hidden tunnel rather than being out in the open. VPNs encrypt your traffic and can hide your "home" address so sites can't tell where you really are. That's relevant to the surge in interest for VPNs in states that have implemented age-verification laws for accessing online adult content. Here's everything you need to know about VPNs.VPNs aren't just a potential way to access banned or explicit material. Many people rely on them for privacy and to protect high-value or sensitive personal and business data. Streaming video aficionados have long used VPNs to watch shows, movies or sports that may be locked out in their own areas. TikTok fans are also investigating VPNs as a possible way around the looming ban on the popular social media app. What about a proxy?A proxy server is another way to skip around regional restrictions. Like a VPN, a proxy masks your IP address (your "home" address) to make it look like you're located somewhere else. However, it doesn't offer the same privacy as a VPN, which also encrypts your data. Learn the difference between VPNs and proxies and when to use each one. Florida joins age verification trendFlorida Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 3 in March 2024, though it went into effect at the beginning of 2025. The bill is focused on preventing minors younger than 14 from becoming social media account holders."In addition to protecting children from the dangers of social media, HB 3 requires pornographic or sexually explicit websites to use age verification to prevent minors from accessing sites that are inappropriate for children," DeSantis' office said in a statement last year.Users must prove they are 18 or older. Websites that fail to comply are subject to penalties of up to $50,000 per violation.Florida's age verification requirement is part of a trend of states that have passed or implemented similar mandates. Those states include Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Virginia. The movement began in earnest in 2022 when Louisiana passed age verification requirements. Many of these laws impose fines or allow a website to be sued for damages unless it uses an age verification process.Pornhub goes darkWhile some adult sites have launched age-verification systems, major pornographic website Pornhub chose to go dark in states with age verification laws, citing privacy concerns with requiring IDs.Pornhub's decision was apparent in a 2024 year-in-review blog post that included a map of popular search terms by state. The states Pornhub no longer services appeared grayed out on the US map. CNET didn't immediately hear back from Pornhub's parent company Aylo about a request for comment.VPN interest surgesVPN review and advocacy site vpnMentor noted a sharp rise in demand for VPN services in Florida coinciding with HB 3 going into effect."The vpnMentor research team observed a significant surge in VPN usage across the state of Florida, with a staggering increase noted in the first hours of January 1st increasing consistently since the last minutes of 2024 and reaching its peak of 1,150% only four hours after the HB 3 law came into effect," the organization said in a statement on Jan. 2.VpnMentor saw similar spikes when Pornhub's state bans launched in Utah in 2023 and Texas in 2024.Taking it to the Supreme CourtState-level age verification laws are facing legal challenges. The adult industry trade association Free Speech Coalition is active in battling age verification laws. The group sued Florida in December to block the state's new law and has already challenged similar laws in other states."While keeping minors from adult content is a laudable goal, the government does not have the right to force legal adults to scan their face, upload a photo ID or otherwise give up their privacy to access the internet," said Alison Boden, Free Speech Coalition executive director, in a statement on Jan. 6.A national precedent for state age verification laws may soon be set. The Supreme Court agreed to take up the Free Speech Coalition's case against the Texas law. The court heard oral arguments on Jan. 15. It can take months for the Supreme Court to release a decision.Choosing a VPNVPNs have been around for a long time, but their rising popularity means more internet users are looking for advice on choosing the right one. Not all VPNs are created equal. CNET generally doesn't recommend free VPN services. When evaluating a VPN, consider privacy standards, speeds and price. Check out CNET's top VPN recommendations.Age verification laws continue to be a battleground. No one is arguing that minors should have access to adult sites, but the issue is shaping up around what mechanisms should be used or required to protect those minors. VPNs will remain a hot topic, whether in relation to online pornography, general privacy or TikTok.

  • Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Digital File Size Seemingly Reduced
    www.nintendolife.com
Save some space.Ahead of the release of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition next month, Nintendo has supposedly updated the file size of the Switch release.Listings online previously suggested the game would take up around 15 GB of space and now the estimated file size on the Switch eShop says the game will require an installation of 13.4 GB (thanks, necrolipe). So it seems Monolith Soft and Nintendo have found a way to save some space! In comparison, the Wii U version was around 20+ GB all up.Read the full article on nintendolife.com

  • EA Considering Apex Legends 2.0, But Battlefield 6 Is The Priority For Now
    www.nintendolife.com
EA's focus this week has been the reveal of the new 'Battlefield Labs' in the leadup to the next major entry, but it's not forgotten about its other FPS hit Apex Legends.Unfortunately for EA, Respawn Entertainment's free-to-play shooter has experienced a bit of a slump in recent times, with the "business of that franchise" not heading in the direction the company wants, according to EA's CEO Andrew Wilson. The long-term plan now is to potentially release a "2.0" version of Apex Legends, which follows Wilson's comments last October when he suggested "version two" wasn't in consideration:Andrew Wilson: "What I think we've demonstrated as a company is an ability to build franchises that last 10, 20, 30 years and growing. Our expectation is that Apex will be also one of those franchises and that sometime, on a longer-term time horizon, there will be an even bigger, more meaningful update to that broader game experience and Apex 2.0, if you will. This will not be the final incarnation of Apex."One thing also noted is how a second major version of Apex (or even a major update) would probably happen "after" the new Battlefield game, which is apparently scheduled to arrive within the fiscal year of 2026."You should imagine we probably wouldn't drop that on top of a Battlefield launch. And so, from a timing standpoint, our thinking right now is that that would exist post Battlefield...We do believe that there should be a more major update that will probably happen after a Battlefield launch just in terms of timing and the team is diligently working through what that would be. And then longer term, our expectation is that we'll continue to expand what this franchise is and how we support a core community of highly competitive players and new communities that want to come and experience all the greatness that Apex has to offer."Apex Legends is still available as a free-to-download title on the Switch eShop and has received multiple updates since its launch on Nintendo's system. As for the Battlefield series, EA hasn't said anything about a possible Switch 2 release just yet, but it has already entertained the idea of series like EA Sports FC and even Madden on the new Nintendo platform - with the CEO noting how EA's series can "find real energy" on new platforms. • Aiming to accelerate product design with AI, Trace.Space raises a Seed round
    techcrunch.com
Modern product engineering requires the production of highly accurate digital simulations, allowing engineers to create prototypes and understand the real-world performance of materials. Currently, legacy software platforms from companies like IBM and Dassault are generally employed, but now powered by Generative AI startups are joining the arena. One such is Trace.Space, coming out of Riga, Latvia. This AI-driven platform has been designed for engineers to develop industrial products. Its now raised a $4 million seed round led by Cherry Ventures, with Riga-based Outlast Fund, as well as existing investors Nebular, Fiedler, and Change Ventures also participating. With Western manufacturing currently under enormous pressure to compete against its fast-paced Asian counterparts, the race is on to develop these platforms to speed up product development.Indeed, we recently saw the appearance of Luminary, as well as Dessia Technologies, which also has a platform to automate engineering processes through AI.Trace.Space is, in particular, designed for the process around the development of electric and autonomous vehicles, satellites, robots, semiconductors, and medical devices. Traditional solutions tend to be based on premise, whereas Trace.Space takes a modern, cloud computing approach. It can also allow manufacturers and suppliers to collaborate on shared product requirements, thus reducing response times.Janis Vavere, Co-Founder and CEO of Trace.Space, told TechCrunch: Every company in the world that builds complex regulated products in automotive, medical, aerospace, and so on, faces the issue that these products are becoming more and more complex, especially to design. The legacy tools and processes are struggling. IBMs tools for this were designed in the late 80s. Its a desktop client and needs to be installed on every computer. After working on Jama software, a more modern design platform for this, he realised the need for a Cloud-based, AI-driven approach: Its now the right moment to combine modern software architectures and UIs with AI, and apply them to these industries. Companies are looking for something better right now.And Trace.Space is not a mere AI wrapper he said: We use AI models like Llama and then some deterministic AI libraries, as well as aspects of OpenAIs LLM.Vavere was previously a sales leader at Jama Software and Lokalise; cofounder Karlis Broders has implemented Jama and Polarion in large-scale projects; and Mikus Krams previously worked in operations at Lokalise and Chili Piper.Commenting in a statement, Dinika Mahtani, Partner at Cherry Ventures, said: This is Cherry Ventures first investment in the Baltics Trace.Spaces, and they have an innovative approach to modernizing requirements management.
