  • Multitude of Sins founder revamps own apartment with "interplay of artistry and function"
    www.dezeen.com
Multitude of Sins founder Smita Thomas has used brutalist forms and whimsical elements to overhaul her duplex apartment in Bengaluru.Named Pearls on Swine in reference to its location within an ordinary-looking building, the home combines Thomas' whimsical taste with her husband's desire for minimalism."Our differing perspectives opened doors to unexpected artistic expression: a dynamic space that celebrates the interplay of artistry and function, a home that's a true reflection of who we are," Thomas told Dezeen.Multitude of Sins founder has overhauled her apartmentThe apartment is split over two levels with an open-plan living, lounge and dining area occupying the majority of the lower floor. A kitchen, library and guest bedroom complete the lower floor with the main bedroom and large terrace on the floor above. All of the spaces share the same grey walls, while in the main living area, Multitude of Sins created a concrete floor with a mosaic described as "a game of tic-tac-toe that's been abandoned halfway"."The flooring itself is an example in artistry and craftsmanship, transforming what could be mere surfaces into a tactile experience," said Thomas. The apartment features whimsical elementsWithin the living area is a multi-textured couch upholstered in micro velvet, cotton and corduroy, accentuated by leather straps and stainless steel inlay designed with the aim of being formal yet laid-back."Think James Bond in a business suit and sneakers suave, but ready for a good time," said Thomas.A flower-shaped artwork hangs above the couchHanging above the couch is an unusual flower-shaped mosaic artwork made with square tiles of varying sizes, sprouting tendrils resembling Maleficent's horns.A pet-proof wall clad in fluted charcoal basalt stone topped with a stripe of Toronto marble runs along the living room and foyer.A multifunctional screen was installed in the foyerExtending out from the living room is a geometric bar unit and pub-style seating nook. Dark concrete flooring with mauve tiles and wood inlay was chosen to distinguish the nook from the rest of the house. The unit itself is shaped like an inverted trapezoid, covered in brown-grey veneer and topped with a stone counter. The bar unit draws upon brutalismThe shutters feature tall, mauve-toned metal handles a detail which is satisfyingly mirrored in the flooring inlay below. On the opposite side of the room, a L-shaped bench was added with a small counter supported on a floor-to-ceiling pole as bar-style seating.Pub-style seating was createdIn the dining space a three-metre-long table covered in concrete-finish tiles with a marble inlay border is supported by large grey-stained wooden legs that resemble concrete blocks. This space is separating from the open kitchen by a sculptural partition wall featuring a collage of materials.Read: Studio Est adds "brutalist elements" to Battersea Power Station apartmentIt is embedded with a rugged concrete slab embossed with the names of the couple's pets, connected to the other elements of the wall with construction rods."I envisioned an experimental piece that would be a showstopper, yet also withstand the reality of daily life: dogs darting around, meals being made, and messes that come with living fully," explained Thomas. The kitchen partition wall is a collage of materialsAlongside the main living area, the library-cum-TV room has a vaulted ceiling covered in weathered grey bricks.Next to it the guest bedroom has a distinctive headboard shaped like a capsule, connected to the bed with metal rods. Flower-shaped lights made in metal moulded to mimic clay flank the bed on both sides. The guest headboard resembles an abacusIn the principal bedroom a stainless steel lattice structure was created for the headboard of the bed, which was cushioned with pink fabric and silver leather. The flooring of this bedroom was embedded with a triangle-shaped marble piece near the foot of the bed, mimicking an area rug.A steel lattice supports the master bedOverall, Thomas hopes that the space successfully blends layers of meaning and materials."I'm most proud of how functional objects and materials in our home gently transform into artistic installations and experiences, blurring the lines between utility and art," Thomas told Dezeen."I aimed to create layers of meaning in every choice, ensuring that every material, every detail, and every curve speaks to who we are as a couple and individuals, without any fear of judgement."The apartment also features a library-cum-TV roomMultitude of Sins is based out of Bengaluru. The studio's project, The Circus Canteen, was the winner of the sustainable interior category at the 2022 Dezeen Awards.Elsewhere in Bengaluru, local studio A Threshold have designed a skylit home offering a "seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living" and 4-site Architects have designed a home informed by Bengaluru's green spaces. The photography is by Ishita Sitwala. The post Multitude of Sins founder revamps own apartment with "interplay of artistry and function" appeared first on Dezeen.

  • This AI Paper Introduces MAETok: A Masked Autoencoder-Based Tokenizer for Efficient Diffusion Models
    www.marktechpost.com
Diffusion models generate images by progressively refining noise into structured representations. However, the computational cost associated with these models remains a key challenge, particularly when operating directly on high-dimensional pixel data. Researchers have been investigating ways to optimize latent space representations to improve efficiency without compromising image quality.A critical problem in diffusion models is the quality and structure of the latent space. Traditional approaches such as Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) have been used as tokenizers to regulate the latent space, ensuring that the learned representations are smooth and structured. However, VAEs often struggle with achieving high pixel-level fidelity due to the constraints imposed by regularization. Autoencoders (AEs), which do not employ variational constraints, can reconstruct images with higher fidelity but often lead to an entangled latent space that hinders the training and performance of diffusion models. Addressing these challenges requires a tokenizer that provides a structured latent space while maintaining high reconstruction accuracy.Previous research efforts have attempted to tackle these issues using various techniques. VAEs impose a Kullback-Leibler (KL) constraint to encourage smooth latent distributions, whereas representation-aligned VAEs refine latent structures for better generation quality. Some methods utilize Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) to structure latent space or align latent representations with pre-trained models to enhance performance. Despite these advancements, existing approaches still encounter computational overhead and scalability limitations, necessitating more effective tokenization strategies.A research team from Carnegie Mellon University, The University of Hong Kong, Peking University, and AMD introduced a novel tokenizer, Masked Autoencoder Tokenizer (MAETok), to address these challenges. MAETok employs masked modeling within an autoencoder framework to develop a more structured latent space while ensuring high reconstruction fidelity. The researchers designed MAETok to leverage the principles of Masked Autoencoders (MAE), optimizing the balance between generation quality and computational efficiency. The methodology behind MAETok involves training an autoencoder with a Vision Transformer (ViT)-based architecture, incorporating both an encoder and a decoder. The encoder receives an input image divided into patches and processes them along with a set of learnable latent tokens. During training, a portion of the input tokens is randomly masked, forcing the model to infer the missing data from the remaining visible regions. This mechanism enhances the ability of the model to learn discriminative and semantically rich representations. Additionally, auxiliary shallow decoders predict the masked features, further refining the quality of the latent space. Unlike traditional VAEs, MAETok eliminates the need for variational constraints, simplifying training while improving efficiency.Extensive experimental evaluations were conducted to assess MAEToks effectiveness. The model demonstrated state-of-the-art performance on ImageNet generation benchmarks while significantly reducing computational requirements. Specifically, MAETok utilized only 128 latent tokens while achieving a generative Frechet Inception Distance (gFID) of 1.69 for 512512 resolution images. Training was 76 times faster, and inference throughput was 31 times higher than conventional methods. The results showed that a latent space with fewer Gaussian Mixture modes produced lower diffusion loss, leading to improved generative performance. The model was trained on SiT-XL with 675M parameters and outperformed previous state-of-the-art models, including those trained with VAEs.This research highlights the importance of structuring latent space effectively in diffusion models. By integrating masked modeling, the researchers achieved an optimal balance between reconstruction fidelity and representation quality, demonstrating that the structure of the latent space is a crucial factor in generative performance. The findings provide a strong foundation for further advancements in diffusion-based image synthesis, offering an approach that enhances scalability and efficiency without sacrificing output quality.Check outthePaper and GitHub Page. All credit for this research goes to the researchers of this project. • Jalen Carter, Other Eagles Players Ill Before Super Bowl 2025
    www.forbes.com
The Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter #98, seen here rushing Matthew Stafford #9 of ... [+] the Los Angeles Rams during a NFC Divisional playoff game missed Wednesday's practice due to an illness. (Photo by Brandon Sloter/Getty Images)Getty ImagesYou could say that the Philadelphia Eagles have a sick team but in this case not in a good way. Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson told the The Philadelphia Inquirer that four to five of his teammates have been battling either the flu or flu-like illness. This includes Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jalen Carter who missed practice on Wednesday as a result but returned on Thursday. Now, the big question is how many of the Eagles players will be fully ready to play on Sunday, which incidentally is when the Eagles will be doing something kind of important for them. They will take on the Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX.Well, the answer does depend on whether each of the players have had the flu or not. A number of other pathogens such as adenoviruses and respiratory syncytial viruses can cause flu-like illnesses. The only way to tell if you really have the flu is to get tested. Thats when you check a sample of fluid from your nose or throat for either particular proteins found on the surface of flu viruses (antigen tests) or genetic material from influenzas viruses (molecular tests.)Those who were actually infected with an influenza A or B virus have likely gone through at least part of the following typical timeline for the flu:Incubation period: This is the time from exposure to the virus to right before the person becomes contagious. This on average lasts for two days, but can range from one to four days. During this time, the virus enters a persons respiratory tract cells and then hijacks the machinery of the cells to make many, many, many copies of itself.Infectious period: After all these copies of the virus are made, they eventually burst out of the respiratory tract cells, which then commences the infectious period. Thats when the person is contagious, able to transmit the virus to others. This infectious period can last for up to a week.Symptomatic period: This is when the person has symptoms of the flu and overlaps with the infectious period. Common symptoms include fevers, coughing, sore throats, body aches, chills, fatigue and feeling run down. The symptomatic period tends to last from three to seven days.Recovery period: This is when the person is no longer contagious and no longer has as severe symptoms. However, some symptoms may persist. For example, the person may not have the same level of energy, which would be relevant for the Super Bowl. The recovery period could extend for as long as a week so that the person doesnt quite feel right until two weeks after the beginning of symptoms. Now, there are cases where flu symptoms are so severe that the person must be hospitalized. In fact, the flu could even get to the point of being life-threatening. This is much more likely in people with weaker immune systems like young children, adults over 65 years of age and those with chronic medical conditions. Last I checked none of the Eagles are young children or over the age of 65. But that doesnt mean that young healthy adults are completely immune to bad flu outcomes. So having the flu is not like having the common cold. Even if you dont get sick to the point of getting hospitalized, it can hit you like a Khalil Mack truck. Therefore, it is possible that the flu virus could end up playing a pivotal role in Super Bowl LIX.With the U.S. right now smack in the middle of flu season, both the Eagles and Chiefs would be wise to take appropriate precautions. Some members of the Eagles organization have been wearing face masks, and not the kind normally found in front of football helmets.MORE FOR YOU
