History Close UpSurprise! Civilization 7 is getting a VR version, and you don't even have to wait that long for itThe regular version of the game is out for most folks next week.Image credit: 2K Games/ PlaySide Studios News by Oisin Kuhnke Contributor Published on Feb. 9, 2025 Civilization 7 technically isn't out yet, but publisher 2K Games has just announced that a VR version of the game is on the way. Some players have already been able to dive into Civilization 7 thanks to having a bit of early access (that they would have had to pay for), and while our own Alex did give it 4/5 stars in his review of the game, there have been some problems - though fixes are on the way. For now, though, forget all of that, and instead join me in being surprised that a VR version of the game developed by PlaySide Studios (The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners) was announced just yesterday for Meta Quest 3 and 3S, and is due out as soon as Spring 2025. Why you'd announce a completely separate, VR version of a game days before its official launch (Civ 7 is out February 11 for everybody else) is anyone's guess, but hey ho, it looks pretty cool so who cares!Watch on YouTubeThe cool thing about it is that you can play it in mixed reality mode, meaning it uses the Meta Quest's front-facing cameras to map the game onto your coffee table, if you like. An official blurb explains, "In Civilization 7 - VR, the world of Civilization is brought to life like never before. The map takes shape atop a Command Table that lets you peer down from high above or lean all the way in to appreciate the finer details of buildings and units, like a tabletop game come to life. Players will chart a course for their people and engage face-to-face with iconic world leaders around the Command Table, each reacting as you forge alliances or declare war through the Ages."To see this content please enable targeting cookies. It should be noted that if you aren't a fan of mixed reality, you'll be able to play the game in regular ole VR mode too, "and you'll be able to freely switch between the two at any time." Plus, you can compete against others to "rule the world in online multiplayer matches", which is nifty if VR makes you feel a bit lonely. There's no exact release date just yet, just some time in Spring 2025, so in the meantime you'll just have to stick to regular Civ 7.

Tech Never lose cell service again with this space-age satellite tech The technology that could be the end of 'no-signal' zones Published February 9, 2025 6:00am EST close Never lose cell service again with this space-age satellite tech AST SpaceMobile is developing the world's first global cellular broadband network that can connect directly to your everyday smartphone. Imagine never being without a cell signal again, anywhere, any time on the planet. That's exactly what AST SpaceMobile is working to achieve. Founded in the heart of Texas in 2017, this innovative company is developing the world's first global cellular broadband network that can connect directly to your everyday smartphone, no special equipment required. Its mission? To ensure that no matter where you are around the globe from remote mountain ranges to isolated islands you'll never be out of touch again. AST SpaceMobile message on smartphone (AST SpaceMobile)A historic achievementAST SpaceMobile made history in April 2023 by completing the first two-way phone call via space on an unmodified cell phone. This milestone was achieved using its low Earth orbit satellite, Blue Walker 3 (BW3), which was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in September 2022. A woman using AST SpaceMobile on her smartphone (AST SpaceMobile)Rapid progress and expansionSince its inception, AST SpaceMobile has made remarkable technological advancements. In September 2023, it achieved a 14-Mbps data stream on the BW3 satellite. A year later, in September 2024, the company launched five additional satellites, BlueBird 1 through 5. The ultimate goal is to establish a constellation of 168 satellites, offering speeds up to 120 Mbps. BlueBird 1 through 5 satellites (AST SpaceMobile)Partnerships and global reachAST SpaceMobile has forged strategic partnerships with major telecom players across the globe. In the United States, it has partnered with AT&T and Verizon. Internationally, it has teamed up with Bell Canada, Rakuten, Vodafone and other telecommunications providers. These partnerships potentially give about 2.8 billion people worldwide access to its satellite network. AST SpaceMobile strategic partnerships with major telecom players (AST SpaceMobile)Technology and manufacturingAST SpaceMobile's approach to satellite connectivity is uniquely innovative. It focuses solely on direct-to-cell service, distinguishing itself from other competitors. Its current BlueBird satellites unfold to approximately 700 square feet in space, with future satellites planned to be three times larger and offer ten times the data capacity. Impressively, 95% of its manufacturing process is completed in house in the United States.WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)? A woman using AST SpaceMobile on her smartphone Comparing with StarlinkWhile both AST SpaceMobile and Elon Musk'sStarlink aim to provide global connectivity, their approaches significantly differ. AST SpaceMobile is built for direct-to-cell service, requiring no special equipment for users.Starlink, primarily a data-focused service, has only recently launched modified satellites for direct-to-cell capabilities. AST's focus on unmodified smartphones gives it a unique advantage in accessibility. Illustration of AST SpaceMobile satellites in space (AST SpaceMobile)Potential challengesDespite the promising technology, the company faces several challenges. The brightness of satellites like BW3 could potentially interfere with astronomical observations. There are concerns about possible interference with radio-quiet zones used for scientific research. The increasing number of satellites also contributes to growing space debris concerns.GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE Illustration of AST SpaceMobile satellite in space (AST SpaceMobile)Cost and availabilityAs of January 2025, AST SpaceMobile has not yet announced specific pricing for its services. However, given its partnerships with major carriers like AT&T and Verizon, it's likely that the service will be offered as an add-on to existing cellular plans. The company aims to provide coverage to remote areas and eliminate dead zones, suggesting that pricing may be competitive to attract a wide user base. A man using AST SpaceMobile on her smartphone (AST SpaceMobile)Kurt's key takeawaysAST SpaceMobile's innovative approach to global connectivity has the potential to revolutionize how we stay connected, especially in remote areas. While challenges remain, the benefits of ubiquitous communication, particularly in emergency situations, are compelling. As the company continues to expand its satellite network and partnerships, we may soon see a world where being "out of range" is a thing of the past.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPIf universal satellite connectivity could solve one major communication challenge in your life, what would it be? • Apple Data Theft SurgeAttacks Up 101%, What You Must Do Now
    www.forbes.com
macOS infostealers are surging.NurPhoto via Getty ImagesAlthough you might be sitting relatively comfortably, as an Apple device user, as you read headline after headline concerning hack attacks against users of Microsoft Windows, and even Linux, be prepared to start wriggling in discomfort: your macOS device is not immune to attack as a massive surge of infostealer malware campaigns demonstrates. Heres what you need to know to stay safe.Apple macOS Users Targeted In A Surge Of Infostealer Malware AttacksThe days of Apple users thinking that security is something other people have to be concerned about are, for the large part, thankfully over. Not that Im suggesting its a good thing that we are seeing a need to check your Apple Watch for spyware, or fully undetectable security backdoors for Mac users. Rather, Im happy that people are taking the security threat seriously as that, and that alone, is the starting point to being safer. But safer from what, exactly, you may be wondering? Well, in the case of macOS users, the resounding answer, it would appear, is a surge in infostealer malware attacks. We recently identified a growing number of attacks targeting macOS users across multiple regions and industries, the Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 team said, In our own telemetry, we detected a 101% increase of macOS infostealers between the last two quarters of 2024. This particular brand of malware is designed solely to siphon sensitive user data from macOS devices according to the Unit 42 investigation.According to the researchers, these macOS infostealers usually exploit the native AppleScript framework, a scripting language created by Apple to give users direct control of scriptable Macintosh applications, as well as certain parts of macOS itself. Since these prompts can look like legitimate system prompts, the researchers said, they can be used to fool victims in social engineering attacks to enter credentials or trick them into disabling security controls.Stay Alert To The Apple Security Risk, Experts WarnMalware types like Atomic Stealer, Poseidon Stealer, and Cthulhu Stealer illustrate the growing complexity of threats targeting macOS, Eric Schwake, director of cybersecurity strategy at Salt Security, warned, security teams must stay alert and take a proactive stance against these dangers, understanding that no operating system is completely safe from attacks.Apple, meanwhile, provided the following advice for macOS users when it comes to malware attack mitigation. You can reduce this risk by using software only from reliable sources. Privacy & Security settings allow you to specify the sources of software installed on your Mac.

  • Samsung Is Emailing Galaxy S25 Buyers A New Offer
    www.forbes.com
Samsung launches officially launches the Galaxy S25 with a new discount code. Photographer: ... [+] SeongJoon Cho/Bloomberg 2025 Bloomberg Finance LPThis story was updated on February 9th with new details on Amazons Galaxy S25 pricing. Dont worry if you missed out on Samsungs Galaxy S25 pre-order deals, the company officially launched the device today with new discounts.Predictably, the Korean company is running another promotion for its new flagship phone, which includes enhanced trade-in prices, discounted accessories and a double storage offer. Theres an extra perk the company is now throwing in with its discount bundle: a 5%-off voucher code.Samsung is emailing customers the code S25APP which knocks 5% off the total price of the device when it is bought in the Samsung Shopping app. This appears to be a rebrand of the long-standing APP5 discount issued to first-time buyers. The difference here is that the discount applies even if you have ordered through the Samsung Shop app before. However, it cant be stacked with the APP5 code, which still works. The new code worked for me on the U.K. version of the app. Its worth pointing out that the promotion only works on the S25 series. If you purchase other devices while buying the new phone, the discount will only be applied to the handset and not any accessories. The APP5 code works on everything else, but only for first time Samsung Shop users.MORE FOR YOUSamsung raises trade-in pricesElsewhere, Samsung is offering an additional store credit for all S25 Ultra purchases that maxes out at $100 depending on what storage option shoppers pick. Accessories have been discounted, too.The Galaxy Buds 3 Pro are down to $59.99 from $249.99The Galaxy Watch Ultra is down to $290.99 from $659.99The Galaxy Ring is down to $239.99 from $399.99Samsung Care Plus is 15% cheaper, too. The real savings are reserved for people with a phone to trade-in. In some places, Samsungs trade-in prices have improved compared just a couple of weeks ago when the company ran its last major Galaxy S24 Ultra promotion. Valuations have, however, dropped for select phones.Apple iPhone 13 pro - $340 (previously $300)Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max - $180 (previously $200)Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra - $500 (unchanged)Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra - $600 (previously $400)That Note 20 Ultra figure stands out. It is a not-so-subtle nudge from Samsung to upgrade because the 2020 Note will likely run out of software updates this year.Broadly, Samsung is willing to pay high prices for Galaxy phones when it is running a sale, so hold on to your used devices, especially if youre planning to buy a foldable this year. It might also be worth your time fishing out your ancient Android phone because Samsung will pay $50 for it, provided it still works.Update February 9th: Amazon has slashed the price of the Galaxy S25 Ultra by 8%, bringing the total down to $1,299.99. This is essentially the same price as Samsungs offer with the $100 instant credit, depending on what storage model shoppers pick.Amazon has also thrown in an additional $80 credit if the code I7JV76JR32T5 is used (this is for the U.S. Amazon site, the code may be different in different territories).Amazon doesnt appear to offer any discounts on the Samsung accessories. The U.K., however, is offering the same deals you can pick up directly from Samsung for its wearables. That includes 40% off the Galaxy Watch Ultra, Buds 3 and Buds 3 Pro. The U.K. site is also offering 100 Samsung credit with all Galaxy S25 Ultra purchases.Neither the U.S. or British Amazon pages appear to offer any trade-in deals, which isnt a terrible loss considering how poor the online retailers trade-in prices have been in the past.

  • I was almost a helicopter parent, but slowly giving my kids more independence is working wonders for their self-reliance
    www.businessinsider.com
As a dad of two kids, ages 5 years and 18 months, helicopter parenting can be easy to fall into.I catch myself constantly trying to protect them from hypothetical dangers. However, I'm learning to let the kids figure out and do things for themselves. You know those Terminator movies, when Arnold Schwarzenegger walks into a room and starts immediately assessing potential threats with his cybernetic vision and AI? As a parent of two young kids, ages 5 years and 18 months, I'm exactly like that.I walk into a restaurant, and my "danger radar" kicks into overdrive. Sharp knife here. Teapot of scalding beverage there. Go to a friend's house, and I can see nothing but finger-teasing electrical outlets, acute, head-splitting corners, and breakable objects full of artery-severing shards within easy reach. My life is full of child-endangering worries. Like if we're eating grapes, my intrusive thoughts ponder an uncut grape that manages to roll onto the floor and later find itself clogging the throat of my 18-month-old son. Or when my eldest walks around with a pencil in hand, and I imagine her slipping and impaling herself.I didn't worry like this when I was youngerThese safety-obsessive thoughts once felt so alien to me. When I was younger, I threw caution to the wind by subjecting my body to all sorts of risky activities, bequeathing me with various scars and unresolved funny noises in my bones. Now, however, as a parent, and with a fully matured fear response, the palpable tension I get when I see a toy car left on a hallway floor or a knife that's placed precariously close to a countertop edge can be almost unbearable. It's so easy to want to shield our children from danger and harm that's the most natural instinct as a parent. I certainly don't want them covered in the same scars I grew up with. But we're in an age when we can access so many studies on parenting, and championing well-being and mental health has never been so in the limelight as it is right now. Some studies have shown that over-parenting, also known as helicopter parenting, may have links to child anxiety and depression, and children generally develop problems with coping when they hit unexpected hurdles or things don't go the way they want. This style of parenting also has links to lower self-esteem and confidence. After all, how can children cope with future failures and setbacks when their parents are no longer in the picture, influencing things at every angle in the background and foreground for the sake of short-term safety? As a middle child growing up in an Asian family, I certainly experienced a fair dose of helicopter parenting at least until my younger sister was born, anyway. I was 10 at the time, and she was the first girl in the family, so all the attention was suddenly focused on her after being on me for a decade. After that, it gave me the space to learn things on my own and be independent and adaptable.I believe that if we, as parents, can train and nurture our kids to be just that little bit "better" than we are or at least let them figure that bit for themselves we're on the right track.I'm trying to course-correct and give my kids more independenceSo instead, I'm giving my eldest more independence. She's even helped me with meal prep using plastic knives, and we're going to start cooking, with her helping stir meals on the stove. I'll let my youngest navigate the stairs on his own, with me half a dozen steps below, offering encouragement. He's also getting fairly adept with using tools like forks and pencils.I still catch myself directing or micromanaging my kids or doing things for them that they can do independently, particularly when time is against us. But being aware of my own attitudes and behaviors is half the battle, and I'm slowly giving them more tasks to make them more self-reliant while offering the time and patience to answer their many questions. It'll be hard, and there will no doubt be temper tantrums and tears when things don't go my kids' way, but my partner and I will be there to help support them and build those crucial resilience and critical thinking skills that'll set them up for life.
