TKO Punch-Outs Mike Tyson has been defeated in under two minutes for the first time After 75K attempts over five years, Summoning Salt says he's hanging up the virtual gloves. Credit: Summoning Salt Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreSince Mike Tyson's Punch-Out was first released on the NES in 1987, millions of players have undertaken millions more digital matches against one of the hardest video game bosses ever, Tyson himself (or, later, the reskinned "Mr. Dream"). Only a small percentage of those players have been able to survive Tyson's flurry of instant-knockdown uppercuts and emerge victorious with the undisputed World Video Boxing Association championship. Even fewer have had fast enough fingers to take out Tyson in the first round. In all that time, no one has been able to register a TKO on Tyson in less than two minutes on the ever-present in-game clock (which runs roughly three times as quickly as a real-time clock). At least, that was true until this weekend, when popular speedrunner and speedrun historian Summoning Salt pulled off a 1:59.97 knockout after what he says was "75,000 attempts over nearly 5 years." Summoning Salt's record-setting sub-2:00 run Incredibly good and incredibly luckyBreaking the storied 2:00 barrier on Tyson is a matter of both incredible skill and incredibly unlikely luck. As Summoning Salt himself started documenting in a 2017 video, getting the quickest possible Tyson TKO requires throwing 21 "frame perfect" punches throughout the fight, each within a 1/60th of a second window. Too early, and those punches do slightly less damage, making the fight take just a bit longer. Too late, and Tyson will throw up a block, negating the punch entirely.A top-notch Tyson speedrun also requires well-timed dodging and ducking of Tyson's own punches, so Little Mac can get back into counter-punching position as quickly as possible. Summoning Salt says he was just seven frames off of perfection in this regard, costing him about 0.35 in-game seconds over the course of the fight.Even with that nearly unmatched execution, though, Summoning Salt's record-breaking run would have fallen well short if not for unreasonable amounts of luck from the game itself. As Bismuth explains in a 2024 video, Tyson can pause for anywhere between a fraction of a second and up to eight seconds between punches.Getting the longest of those delays can hamper any realistic chance of even beating Tyson in the first round. But for his sub-two-minute TKO, Summoning Salt needed almost all of those pauses to luckily come down at the minimum of eight frames (~0.4 seconds on the in-game clock) Bismuth explains the unreasonable luck needed for a record-setting Tyson fight at around the 56:30 mark in this 2024 video. Summoning Salt says Tyson here gave him a "perfect pattern" during his first phase of endless uppercuts, something that happens only 1 in 1,600 bouts. And later in the fight, the game's random-number generator cooperated by adding only an extra 16 frames of delay (~0.8 in-game seconds) compared to a "perfect" run. Combined, Summoning Salt estimates that Tyson will only punch this quickly once every 7,000 to 10,000 attempts."It's over," Summoning Salt said live on Twitch when the record-setting match was finished, in a surprisingly even tone that came over what sounds very much like a dropped controller. "I thought I'd be a lot more excited about this. Holy shit, dude! It's fucking over... Dude, am I dreaming right now? ... I'm sorry I'm so quiet. I'm kind of in shock right now that that just happened."Where do we go from here? With his near-perfect combination of both skill and luck, Summoning Salt's new record surpasses his own previous world record of precisely 2:00.00 on the in-game clock. That mark, set just eight months ago, was just three frames off of displaying 1:59 on the in-game timer for the first time.Summoning Salt was also the first runner to break the 2:01 barrier on Tyson in 2020, a feat he has since replicated just 15 times over tens of thousands of attempts. "There's essentially no difference between all of those [2:00.xx] fights and this one, except I got better luck from Tyson on this fight," he writes. "Finally, after nearly half a decade, the 1:59 has happened." Summoning Salt discusses the difficulty of beating 2:13 on Tyson in 2020, months before setting a then-record time of 2:00 himself Ironically, just before posting his first 2:00.xx fight in 2020, Summoning Salt posted a video discussing in part just how difficult it was for speedrunners to beat Matt Turk's 2007 record of 2:13 on Tyson. "For years it was just this impossibly fast time that the top players just couldn't get close to," Summoning Salt said at the time. "Of course other top players fought Tyson years later, but their best efforts came up short... they couldn't touch it. It stood alone."Summoning Salt is now just over a second off of the tool-assisted speedrun record of 1:58.61, which uses emulated gameplay to fight a theoretical "perfect" bout every time. But after spending years on what he writes "is the greatest gaming achievement I have ever accomplished," Summoning Salt seems ready to hand up his virtual boxing gloves for good."I have no plans to ever improve this time," he writes. "It will be beaten by somebody one day, likely by matching this fight and then getting better luck in phase 3. I have no interest in competing for that, but am extremely proud to have gotten the first sub 2 ever on Mike Tyson."Kyle OrlandSenior Gaming EditorKyle OrlandSenior Gaming Editor Kyle Orland has been the Senior Gaming Editor at Ars Technica since 2012, writing primarily about the business, tech, and culture behind video games. • Sam Altman's World Network says 1 in 4 people are flirting with chatbots online
    www.businessinsider.com
Romanticizing a chatbot might be more common than you think.WorldcoinSam Altman's World Network surveyed over 90,000 users on AI and dating. It found that 26% of people flirt with chatbots, knowingly or not.World Network's new product, World ID Deep Face, aims to verify humans on dating apps and platforms. When the movie Her debuted in 2013, its plot about a man falling in love with an AI operating system seemed, if not wholly original, a vision of the distant future.About a decade later, though, relationships between AI chatbots and humans are becoming more commonplace.Take Replika, a dating app launched in 2017 that lets users create customized romantic chatbots. By 2023, it had about 676,000 daily active users, with the average user spending two hours a day on the app, according to figures from Apptopia. It's not only Replika users. Romanticizing a chatbot is becoming a global phenomenon. One in four people admitted to flirting with a chatbot either knowingly or unknowingly, according to a survey conducted by Sam Altman's futuristic project, World, formerly known as Worldcoin. The company surveyed 90,000 of the 25 million people on its network about their feelings on love in the age of AI.The majority of respondents said they are still wary of interacting with bots. About 90% said they want dating apps to have a system for verifying real humans. About 60% of users said they have either suspected or discovered that they matched with a bot.To help users combat deepfakes, World launched a product called World ID Deep Face. It relies on the World's existing verification system whichtakes pictures of humans' iriseswith a melon-sized orb to verify on platforms like Google Meet, Zoom, or dating apps that users are communicating with real humans in real-time video or chat interactions. World is in the process of rolling out the system in beta."As someone that uses dating apps, all the time I get catfished," Tiago Sada, the chief product officer of Tools for Humanity, the company building World's technology, told Business Insider. "You see profiles that they're just too good to be true. Or you realize this person has six fingers. Why do they have six fingers? Turns out it's AI."Read the original article on Business Insider

  • I have celiac disease, which can make eating with friends and family difficult. I've learned to stand up for myself and my needs.
    www.businessinsider.com
A celiac disease diagnosis requires lifelong gluten avoidance for me to stay healthy and feel my best.At times, it has been tricky to navigate dining with family and friends.Clear communication is key, but it's also important to set boundaries and stand up for myself."I'm sorry, but if you go to that restaurant, I cannot join you," I said to my aunt over the phone. At the time, I knew the restaurant my aunt and the group she was with was planning to dine at wasn't going to work for me. I had previously contacted the restaurant and someone on staff informed me that they couldn't guarantee that my food would be free of gluten. For me, it was a hard no.I have celiac disease, which is a chronic autoimmune condition that affects the small intestine, which can be damaged when it comes into contact with gluten. I was diagnosed a few weeks before I turned 18. While it wasn't a desired birthday gift, over the last eight years I've learned to live with this issue comfortably. The treatment for this condition is straightforward: avoid eating gluten for all your life. While this might sound drastic, it is feasible. Most foods, like veggies and fruit, as well as protein and healthy fat sources, naturally don't contain gluten. There are a good number of gluten-free options among cereals and pseudocereals too, such as rice, corn, buckwheat, and amaranth. I just have to be proactive and know what I'm putting into my body.Still, when dining out with other people or in other people's homes, celiac disease can be psychologically challenging. Here's how I've learned to manage some common scenarios. When dining out I research and ask for informationWhere I live in Italy, the AIC (Italian Celiac Society) maintains a list of certified venues that I know will have gluten-free options. However, I often want to dine somewhere else or I am not the one deciding the location. While AIC-certified venues are safer choices for people with celiac disease, I have become quite comfortable going to non-certified restaurants, provided that I check in with them beforehand. When dining out somewhere I haven't been before, I usually call ahead to inform them I have celiac disease and inquire about gluten-free options. I also look at the restaurant's website to explore its menu, which sometimes it indicates potential allergens or states that the restaurant's staff is trained to help customers with intolerances. Some months ago I was invited to a friend's birthday party. When I called the restaurant we'd be attending, the staff seemed knowledgeable about celiac disease, which was a good sign. At the dinner party, I reminded them of my condition when ordering a seafood dish. They told me there was an element with gluten but they would tell the chef to prepare the dish without it and to take special care. This made me feel cared for, which is always a pleasant experience. When eating at someone else's house I explain my dietary needs When dining at a friend's home, I often call to discuss the menu ahead of time. If other guests are having food with gluten, like pasta, I either plan to skip that course, ask for an alternative, or offer to bring something . If I have any doubts about a dish, I know to ask the host for clarification. If they are uncertain about the ingredients, I ask them if they checked if it contains gluten when they bought it. Based on their answer, I make my choice. Now, my friends and family know that I have celiac disease, so I don't have to explain my dietary needs in-depth anymore. Still, I sometimes should be more thorough, specifically telling them that clean cookware is needed and that they should wash their hands if they have touched food with gluten.I'm not afraid to stand up for myselfDuring that call with my aunt, we decided to change the venue and go to one of my favorite restaurants, an AIC-certified venue where almost all dishes have a gluten-free version (even pizza!). She assured me it wasn't an issue if this made me feel safer, so I enjoyed a delightful dinner with my cousin, my aunt, and a friend.

AkhavanStudioArchitects: Paad ArchitectsAreaArea of this architecture projectArea:54 mYearCompletion year of this architecture project Year: 2024 PhotographsPhotographs:AkhavanStudio Lead Architect: Mohammad Yaser Mousapour More SpecsLess SpecsSave this picture!Text description provided by the architects. Historically, architecture has been anchored to the ground on which it stands. However, in contemporary cities, architecture needs greater agility and freedom to increase its chances of participating in and intervening with the qualities of everyday life. Contemporary architectural discourse has been exploring methods of creating temporary and alternative relationships with the ground, aiming to produce provisional and adaptive spaces. The Walking Canopy, situated in the historic city of Isfahan, is a project that pursues this idea to define a new relationship between architecture and urban life at a very small scale, where a radical idea meets low-budget and low-tech conditions.Save this picture! The project was a renovation for a bistro caf. The frontage area became a catalyst for defining a more active and integrated relationship between interior and exterior architectural behaviors. By organizing the kitchen in a linear configuration along one side, we transformed the hall into a seamless urban extension reaching outward. Reciprocally, by positioning the barista station at the edge of the volume, we enabled it to move from inside to outside, turning the exterior area into an inward continuation of the interior space.Save this picture! To achieve this seamless spatial fluidity in Isfahan's climate, we envisioned the space as open-air, employing alternative conditioning methods. The radiant heaters and misting fans are positioned alongside lighting fixtures on a deliberate ceiling grid as architectural elements that produce space without physical boundaries, rather than mere mechanical additions. Thus, the hall functions like a shaded portico facing the city which, similar to Isfahan's historical architectural experience, often requires no active conditioning.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The barista, by detaching the bar from the rest of the preparation and kitchen area and moving toward the outdoor area, settles outside in a theatrical manner, creating their own urban hangout. As the barista steps forward with the espresso bar, a canopy unfurls from a roller, creating a thin, temporary sheltered space in their wake. This space accommodates outdoor furniture beneath it and disappears at the day's end when the bar returns to its initial position. To support the barista's new outdoor positioning, the ground is considered an energy source with water and electricity connections, creating the possibility for the caf bar to plug into itself. The barista's performative behavior extends into the interior lighting design and even to the handwashing area. Here, a highly ordinary and mundane daily routine finds itself under focused lighting and different mirrors that, by fragmenting this activity, awaken the performative capacity hidden beneath its surface.Save this picture! The Walking Canopy project seeks new ways to interweave architecture with the city's daily rhythm, searching for fresh qualities beneath the surface of everyday occurrences at small scales. The theatrical capacity extends throughout the space - from the performative act of coffee-making to the carefully choreographed movement of architectural elements. Here, architecture itself becomes a performer, inviting urban vitality through the movement of its components, transforming from a static container to a dynamic participant in urban life.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Isfahan, IranLocation to be used only as a reference. gamerant.com
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is at its best when it's setting its characters loose. Just like its predecessor, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has a great sense of humor, and, coupled with strong voice acting and a nuanced script, the game manages to present one of the most lovable casts in recent gaming memory. Nowhere is this narrative angle more apparent than in the dynamic between Henry and Hans, who are a breath of fresh air in today's overly sanitized games market.

  • The best Super Bowl commercials of 2025
    www.polygon.com
The Super Bowl is such a huge annual event that it transcends football. A time-honored tradition, even for non-football fans, is to check out the Super Bowl commercials. With so many eyes on the big game, and brands bringing their best efforts, there are usually a few fun shorts to watch. Weve rounded up the best Super Bowl 2025 commercials in one place.Charli XCX and Martha Stewart Spill SecretsAfter the roaring success of Brat Summer, Charli XCX shows up in this Super Bowl ad with Martha Stewart, where the two play a game of we listen and we dont judge. Each participant shares an embarrassing or silly secret of some kind, and true to the name, neither can judge the other.Unfortunately, Martha doesnt have as many interesting tidbits to share as you might think, considering shes a felon, but I always like seeing Charli get some recognition. A second Uber Eats spot has Matthew McConaughey doing his best impression of Mike Ditka, the legendary Chicago Bears coach. The series of celebrity-filled shorts culminates in Uber Eats long-running commercial conspiracy theory that football was invented in order to sell food, with Greta Gerwig expressing some healthy skepticism.A mayo-induced orgasmTheres a classic scene in the rom-com When Harry Met Sally when Meg Ryan, in order to prove a point, fakes an orgasm mid-meal. This Super Bowl ad has Ryan reconnnect with Billy Crystal in the same deli, where Crystal remarks that hes surprised they were able to return. Meg Ryan, unable to stop old habits, adds a dose of Hellmanns mayonnaise to her sandwich and has a similarly over-the-top response. I can safely say I didnt have mayo so good it makes you orgasm on my Super Bowl 2025 bingo card. The Slow and LuxuriousVin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Ludacris all reunite, but instead of driving in high-speed contests of life and death, Diesel and Rodriguez are just having a charming drive while enjoying some ice cream. Things cant always be fast and furious, I suppose. Frankly, Id just like to see this concept expanded into a full feature film. Sometimes I get stressed watching high-octane contests between the worlds most skilled drivers as they learn the meaning of family. It can be a little much. The mustache madness continues at PringlesWhen I think about Pringles, I think of the long, tube-shaped packaging and their logo, an affable little cartoon man with a mustache. Last year, Chris Pratt grew a mustache in a Super Bowl ad for Pringles. This year, the company recruited Nick Offerman, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, and LA Clippers guard James Harden to watch their famous mustaches detach and fly away on a mission to retrieve more Pringles for a party. A sky full of mustaches flap gloriously onward, bearing tubes of Pringles. Its majestic, if an ineffective chip delivery mechanism.Eyebrows a-flyingWeirdly enough, this isnt the only advertisement that revolves around flying facial hair. Eugene Levy enjoys a treat from Little Caesars, only for his eyebrows to fly off his face in amazement and go on a world tour. They stop by to visit his daughter, ambush a jogger, perch on a babys face, win over some furry worms, and eventually return to Levys face. Its a novel way to draw attention to a very small-sized pizza snack, but Im not sure if I like the idea of associating hair with food.Coffee-Mates unnerving concertShania Twain lends her vocals to a short advertisement for Coffee-Mates cold foam, which allows for a whipped-cream-like layer of luxury to be easily added to someones morning coffee. The advertisement proposes that this would be so delightful that it would inspire a metaphorical concert in your mouth, complete with a tongue writhing and dancing to Shanias singing. Personally, I like my tongue to simply register the taste of something, not flail wildly to a country legend, but thats just me.Silly sloths struggle with societyIn my personal favorite of the bunch, Coors paid for a one-minute ad that attempts to capture the slow pace of a post-Super Bowl Monday fugue. In this world, everyone is a giant sloth, a noble and majestic beast. However, these wonderful creatures struggle with tasks like office life, shopping at the store, fitting in a workout, domestic chores, and more. Frankly, Im right there with those sloths; this is highly relatable content. The best gag is probably the slow-speed chase at a bank, where cop sloths slowly lumber after sloth robbers.
