  • A Beginners Guide to Layering Rugs for a Cozy Look
    www.home-designing.com
If youve ever walked into a beautifully decorated room and felt an instant sense of warmth and comfort, chances are layering rugs played a big role in creating that inviting atmosphere. Its one of those design tricks that can elevate a space, making it feel lived-in, stylish, and effortlessly cozy. But if youre new to the idea, it can feel a little intimidating. Where do you start? How do you choose the right rugs? And how do you make sure they work together without clashing? Dont worry, we have got you covered. Heres a simple guide to help you master the art of layering rugs so your home can feel warm, textured, and uniquely yours.1. Start with the Right Base RugImage Source: Rebecca and GenevieThink of your base rug as the foundation of your layered look. Its the anchor that holds everything together, so its important to choose wisely. A good base rug is usually neutral in color and pattern. Natural fiber rugs, like jute, sisal, or seagrass, are fantastic options because theyre durable, timeless, and add a subtle texture to the room. Plus, theyre often more affordable, which is a win if youre working with a budget. When picking a base rug, think about the size of your room and where your furniture sits. In a living room, for example, the base rug should be large enough to fit under your sofa and coffee table. In a bedroom, it should extend beyond the sides of your bed.2. Properly Position Your RugsImage Source: One King LaneWhen it comes to layering rugs, positioning is everything. Even the most beautiful rugs can look awkward if theyre not placed correctly. The way you position your rugs can make or break the entire look, so its worth taking the time to get it right. The most common and foolproof way to layer rugs is to center the top rug over the base rug. This creates a balanced, symmetrical look that feels intentional and polished. For example, in a living room, place the top rug directly in the middle of the seating area, making sure its aligned with the furniture. In a bedroom, center the top rug at the foot of the bed or under the lower two-thirds of the bed for a cozy, layered effect. If youre going for a more relaxed, eclectic vibe, try positioning the top rug slightly off-center. This works especially well in bohemian or casual spaces where a perfectly symmetrical look might feel too formal.3. Mix and Match Patterns Like a ProImage Source: One King LaneOne of the most fun parts of layering rugs is playing with patterns. But if youre not careful, it can quickly go from stylish to chaotic. The trick is to balance bold patterns with more subdued ones. For example, if your base rug has a subtle geometric design, you can layer a top rug with a bold, colorful pattern. Or, if your base rug is solid or neutral, you can go all out with a vibrant, patterned top rug. When mixing patterns, pay attention to scale. Pairing a large-scale pattern with a smaller one creates visual interest without overwhelming the eye. For instance, a rug with a big, bold floral print could be layered over one with a delicate stripe or herringbone pattern. And dont forget about colorchoosing rugs that share at least one common hue will help tie the look together seamlessly.4. Experiment with Rug ShapesImage Source: One King LaneWho says rugs have to be rectangular? One of the most fun ways to layer rugs is to mix and match different shapes. For example, you could layer a round rug over a rectangular base rug to create a soft, organic look. This works particularly well in living rooms or bedrooms, where a round rug can add a touch of whimsy and break up the straight lines of furniture.Alternatively, you could layer a sheepskin or hide rug over a larger, more structured base rug. This adds a luxurious, tactile element to the space and works beautifully in cozy reading nooks or beside the bed. Dont be afraid to think outside the boxlayering rugs is all about creativity, so let your imagination run wild.5. Pay Attention to Size and ScaleImage Source: The SpruceSize really does matter when it comes to layering rugs. The top rug should always be smaller than the base rug, but not so small that it looks out of place. A good rule of thumb is to leave at least 12 to 18 inches of the base rug visible around the edges of the top rug. This creates a balanced, intentional look rather than one that feels haphazard. In terms of scale, think about the size of your furniture and the room itself. In a large living room, you might opt for a generously sized base rug with a medium-sized top rug layered in the center. In the bedroom, the base rug should extend beyond the sides and foot of the bed, creating a soft landing for your feet when you get out of bed. In the dining room, the base rug should be large enough to accommodate the dining table and chairs, even when the chairs are pulled out. In the entryway, layering rugs can create a warm and welcoming first impression. The base rug should be durable and easy to clean, as it will bear the brunt of foot traffic.6. Play with Texture for Added DepthImage Source: The SpruceTexture is a powerful tool in interior design, and layering rugs is a great way to incorporate it into your space. Mixing different textures adds depth and interest, making the room feel more dynamic and inviting. For example, you could pair a flat-weave jute rug with a plush, shaggy top rug for a contrast thats both visually and tactilely appealing.Dont limit yourself to just two texturesfeel free to layer multiple rugs with varying textures for a rich, layered effect. A sheepskin rug over a woven kilim, for example, creates a luxurious, bohemian vibe. The key is to balance the textures so they complement rather than compete with each other.7. Harmonize ColorsImage Source: Country LivingWhen layering rugs, colour harmony is key. You dont want your rugs to feel like theyre competing for attention. Start by looking at the existing colours in your roomyour walls, furniture, and decor. Choose a base rug that complements these tones, then pick a top rug that either matches or contrasts in a way that feels intentional. For example, if your room has a lot of neutral tones, a top rug with a pop of colour (like mustard yellow or deep green) can add life without overwhelming the space. If your room is already colourful, go for a top rug that ties those colours together, like one with a pattern that incorporates multiple shades from the room. The goal is to create a cohesive look that feels balanced and thoughtful.8. Define Spaces and ZonesImage Source: One King LaneIn open-concept homes, layering rugs can be a game-changer for defining different areas. For example, in a combined living and dining room, you could use a large base rug to anchor the living area and a smaller, patterned rug to define the dining space. This creates a visual separation between the two zones while maintaining a cohesive look. You can also use layered rugs to highlight specific areas within a room. For instance, in a bedroom, you could layer a plush, soft rug at the foot of the bed to create a cozy spot for stepping out of bed in the morning. In a home office, a layered rug under your desk can add warmth and personality to your workspace.9. Anchor with FurnitureImage Source: The SpruceLayering rugs isnt just about the floorits about how the rugs interact with your furniture. A well-layered rug should anchor your furniture, making the space feel grounded and intentional. In a living room, for example, your base rug should be large enough to fit under the front legs of your sofa and chairs, while the top rug can sit slightly off-center to create a focal point. In a bedroom, layer a smaller rug at the foot of the bed or under a bench to add warmth and define the space. The key is to make sure your furniture feels connected to the rugs, not like its floating awkwardly above them.9. Trust Your Instincts and Have FunImage Source: Rebecca and GenevieAt the end of the day, layering rugs is all about expressing your personal style and creating a space that feels like home. Dont be afraid to trust your instincts and take risks. If you love a particular rug but arent sure how to layer it, just go for ityou might be surprised at how well it works. And remember, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to design. The most important thing is that you love the result.Mistakes to Avoid While Layering Rugs: Designer TipsLayering rugs can be a game-changer for your space, but there are a few common mistakes that can make the whole look fall flat. Heres what to watch out for, so you can avoid those oops moments and create a layered rug setup that feels intentional and stylish.Choosing the Wrong Sizes :One of the biggest mistakes is picking rugs that are too close in size. If the top rug almost matches the bottom one, the layering effect gets lost. The base rug should be significantly larger to create a well-balanced look. Not Securing the Rugs Properly: If the rugs slip and slide, they not only look messy but can also become a safety hazard. Use rug pads or double-sided tape to keep them in place.Overcrowding the Space: Too many layers in a small area can make the space feel heavy and cramped. If your room is on the smaller side, opt for just two layers and keep the rest of the decor light and airy.Being Too Matchy-Matchy: While its important to create harmony, being too matchy-matchy can make the space feel flat and uninspired. For example, pairing a beige base rug with a beige top rug might feel safe, but it wont add much visual interest.Ignoring Texture and Material Contrast: Layering two rugs with similar textures can feel redundant. Mix different materialslike a soft wool rug over a natural jute or sisal baseto create contrast and visual interest.Using Rugs That Are Too Thin or Slippery:Functionality matters just as much as aesthetics. If your rugs are too thin or slippery, they can slide around or bunch up, creating a tripping hazard and ruining the look. To avoid this, invest in a good-quality rug pad for both the base and top rugs.Finishing NotesIf youre looking for more inspiration or want to explore other home design ideas, be sure to check out Home Designing. • U.S. iPhone users can no longer find the Gulf of Mexico on Apple Maps
    www.macworld.com
MacworldThe body of water previously known in the U.S. as the Gulf of Mexicoand still known as that in many other parts of the worldwill henceforth be labeled as Gulf of America for U.S. users of Apple Maps. The jingoistic decision to rename the gulf was made by President Donald Trump on January 20 amid a slew of executive orders. However, the presidents powers to rename geographic features are limited. He is able merely to direct federal agencies to adopt the new name, while official international usage lies outside his purview, and individuals and companies throughout the world can continue to call the gulf whatever they like. Under such circumstances, the proprietors of major mapping services may be unsure how to proceed. Apple Maps, Google Maps, MapQuest and so on have millions of overseas users who will be baffled and dismayed by such a change and are not bound to follow the presidents whim when applying geographic labels. At the same time, U.S.-based corporations are understandably reluctant to alienate either the governing party or the large sections of the populace who voted for it.Ideally tech giants would love to stay out of political squabbles entirely and avoid offending anyone. One approach would be to simply have the names on digital maps reflect data provided by an official body: follow, for example, the usage of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and its Geographic Names Information Service (GNIS). On that basis, it was understood that Apple Maps and Google Maps wouldnt change the name of the gulf until the GNIS did so first, which could take months.Well, things seem to have sped up. The GNIS has been updated to reflect the presidents order, and earlier this week Google responded by changing the label in Google Maps. Users of the service in the U.S. now see the label Gulf of America, while users in Mexico see Gulf of Mexico. Everyone else sees the old name with the new name in brackets. (If that seems like contemptible fence-sitting, do note that it isnt unprecedented. Mapping services have long done a similar balancing act for places like Taiwan.)For a U.K. viewer, Google Maps currently shows both names.David Price / FoundryWhile MapQuest and Bing Maps have not changed the label at time of writing, Apple quickly followed Googles and the GNISs lead and switched to the usage Gulf of America for U.S. users, as first spotted by Bloomberg. Sources report, however, that Cupertino is embracing the new name more fully than Google, and at some point in the future intends to make the change for international users too. For now, here in the U.K., a search for Gulf of America takes me to the place in question but still shows a label referencing Mexico. An interesting wrinkle is that, while the GNIS has updated its database, the USGS maps are still catching up. These still say Gulf of Mexico, albeit with a note at the top of the page saying Per Secretarial Order 3423, the Gulf of Mexico has been renamed to the Gulf of America. The display map for the Gazetteer application is in the process of being updated to reflect this name change. It seems that Google and Apple have both rushed to follow Trumps orders quicker than his own federal agencies. Or perhaps they simply have more advanced mapping systems.David Price / FoundrySuch enthusiastic compliance may be disappointing from a company widely perceived to embody progressive values, but nobody can be surprised. Tim Cook contributed $1 million of his personal fortune to Trumps inauguration fund and appeared in several photos as an attendee of the inauguration. Hes not about to let ideological differences sour Apples relationship with the White House and put its prospects in jeopardy, especially when the threat of tariffs looms over everything Apple sells. And lets not forget, the current regime is not above taking petty revenge on those who oppose even its smallest edicts.

  • Surfshark VPN review
    www.macworld.com
MacworldAt a GlanceExpert's RatingProsSimple to useNo device limitsGreat for streaming servicesConsPrices could increase after your plan expiresOur Verdict SurfShark is a great VPN option thats as easy to use as the best of them, while maintaining security across an unlimited number of devices something we dont see often. As with the likes of NordVPN, it leans heavily on two-year pricing, which can be problematic when VPN legislation and privacy protocols can regularly wax and wane.Price When ReviewedThis value will show the geolocated pricing text for product undefinedBest Pricing TodayRetailerPriceSurfshark1,99 View DealPrice comparison from over 24,000 stores worldwideProductPricePrice comparison from BackmarketBest Prices Today: SurfsharkRetailerPriceSurfshark1,99 View DealPrice comparison from over 24,000 stores worldwideProductPricePrice comparison from BackmarketWeve updated this review for 2025.The joy of VPNs becoming more popular is that services spring up all over the place aiming to be worth your time and money. One such option is SurfShark, which remains a reliable, affordable option that theres a good chance your favorite tech YouTuber has endorsed at some point in time.SurfShark has more than 3000 servers spread across 100 countries, making its network one of the widest and most varied of any VPN, as well as a backbone of excellent apps across just about any operating system, Apple or otherwise (although I did find it slowed my MacBook down a little during testing). Surfshark has a VPN app for Apple TV too, which should simplify the process of accessing region-locked content on that device. It supports multiple protocols and excellent encryption, as well as a privacy-minded no-logs policy thats regularly audited something even big hitters like NordVPN cant guarantee. So, whether youre looking to buy a product from another country, access a different countrys selection of streaming service libraries from the comfort of your home, or want to just keep your data private when using coffee shop Wi-Fi, SurfShark is well worth a look. For more options take a look at our round-ups of the best VPNs for Mac, best VPNs for iPhone and best VPNs for iPad.You can sign up for Surfshark here.Surfshark Features & AppsCreate a persona to use on sites you dont entirely trust or want to be linked to your email or payment information.FoundryAs with many of its competitors, SurfShark offers three tiers of features at varying price points. The most basic option, aptly named SurfShark Starter, offers VPN functionality as well as an ad blocker and the option to generate a proxy email address and personal details for sites you dont feel comfortable about giving your information to.SurfShark One, which the company refers to as the Best choice, adds email and payment detail breach alerts, as well as personal data security reports, antivirus and other malware protection, while the One+ plan adds data removal from company databases and people search sites (in the U.S., Canada, U.K., and EU).Its a comprehensive feature set, but while SurfShark certainly tempts with a price starting at just $2.39/1.79 per month at the time of writing, its tied to a two-year bundle. With VPN legislation seemingly always in flux, theres a risk in tying into anything longer than a year and theres no guarantee the price wont go up after any length of membership.Once its installed, its easy to get connected to one of its dizzying array of connections simply click the country on the left column and itll start connecting immediately. The macOS app offers light and dark modes, and you can opt to have it shown in the dock or the menu bar which is a nice touch (although I always prefer the latter). As well as an iOS app there is an app for Apple TV. I also took the iOS version of SurfShark for a spin and was pleased to see features like MultiHop and Dedicated IP are baked in. Many mobile apps are watered-down versions of their desktop VPN offerings, but theres even the Alternative ID function here.Surfshark PerformanceSurfShark is easy to get to grips with, even for VPN newcomers.FoundryWhen I reviewed SurfShark previously, I found the performance to be inconsistent with results others had seen, but since then my own network has seen an upgrade and Ive moved to a more recent MacBook model, so we wanted to run the test again.Youll notice connection speed fluctuations with a VPN more with a slower connection than with a superfast one, but my use case falls somewhere in the middle. With WireGuard, SurfShark is, quite simply, the slickest VPN around, removing very little speed from my connection. In fact, testing on around an 800 Mbps connection (up from the last time we tested), the drop was to around 720 to 750 Mbps which is still absolutely fantastic and tears away from the opposition.OpenVPN is better for compatibility, though, and after the fine folks at Surfshark asked us to crunch the numbers again, Im pleased to say things are much swifter than when I tested before. OpenVPN still sees a steeper drop, but its still running at anywhere between 400 and 450 Mbps.Whichever protocol I used, I was able to flick between streaming libraries with ease, do a bit of shopping for digital goods, and there were no real issues at least in so far as connectivity. In my prior testing, SurfSharks Mac app felt as though it was grinding my daily login to a halt, but on the M3 MacBook Air whatever issue was there before seems to be fixed, with no discernible performance drop (thank goodness).Surfshark Privacy & SecurityAntivirus Scan: Scan for unwelcome files and viruses on your Mac.FoundryGeoblocking aside, those protocols also offer varying degrees of encryption, all end-to-end to keep your data secure at source and in transit. The Kill Switch feature is billed as a safety net, and like a safety net, its something youll hope to never use but youll be glad if you have to. Itll shut down your connection if your VPN connection falters, preventing personal data from sneaking out to bad actors. It wont reconnect automatically, which in this case is a good thing.Surfshark is headquartered in the Netherlands and has undergone a series of security audits in recent months. A no logs policy is hard to prove (how can a company show you it doesnt have your data if it never collected any in the first place?) but Surfsharks process means it logs a small amount of data thats then scrubbed from its servers with 15 minutes of closing the connection. This data isnt attributed to a user by name, so a user ID and connection time are all thats logged, and then those are removed.Search Function: The Surfshark Search offers truly organic results, but these can be hit and miss.FoundryThe Antivirus Scan is handy, too, and itll run scheduled background scans if you leave the app open. Two beta features, Ransomware Shield and Webcam Protection can stop your personal folders and hardware camera from falling into the wrong hands respectively, and the app will constantly look to update its database of viruses to cross-reference files. While Googles algorithm continually tries to eat itself, Surfshark offers a handy tracker-free browser within the app that moves to your browser of choice. This private search is intended to surface truly organic results, but in my testing it was hit and miss, oscillating between YouTube videos, old Reddit posts, and the articles I was genuinely looking for.Surfshark pricing and plansAs mentioned earlier, two years is a long time to be tied into a VPN, but to its credit, SurfSharks prices are so low that it almost feels worth the risk. $2.19/1.69 per month (for 24 months, plus three three months) is very little indeed, and while that doesnt offer some of the more advanced security features, even the priciest tier is only $4.29/3.09 at a month for 24 months (plus three free months). Just note that Surfshark frequently adjusts these savings, so you may find it costs fractionally more or less. We round up the best VPN deals separately.Alternatively, if you dont want to be stuck in a plan you can sign up on a monthly plan. Monthly plans range from $15.45/12.29 to $20.65/14.99, depending on which features you opt for.You can sign up for Surfshark here. Its one of the cheapest options out there, and that may just make it worth a look even if youre looking to use train Wi-Fi while commuting each month, even if you dont end up springing for one of the pricier plans with additional features. Still, theres no guarantee itll stay as cheap as this when it comes to renewal.VerdictId always advise against a two-year plan for any VPN, but the price of Surfsharks cheapest plan is so cheap over that time that it remains tempting. It certainly doesnt hurt that its a remarkably privacy-focused, secure VPN thats easily capable of getting around geo-blocked content, too. Whatever youre looking to use a VPN for, theres a good chance youll get what youre looking for with SurfShark.

  • The irritating but amusing irony of Googles Gemini interface
    www.computerworld.com
Look, if youve read this column for long now, you know Im extremely guarded with my enthusiasm for Gemini and the other similar large-language-model AI answer-bots.Plain and simple, they just arent reliable as on-demand answer genies despite being positioned as exactly that and theyve got a nasty habit of coughing up inaccurate info with an astonishing amount of confidence.Ive said it before, and Ill say it again: If something is inaccurate or unreliable even 10% of the time (and thats being generous, in this instance), its useful precisely 0% of the time. But that foundational flaw isnt what I want to talk about today cause the truth is that for all of their weaknesses as information-surfacing systems, Gemini and its brethren do offer some genuine utility when it comes to other, more clerical functions. And plenty of folks are finding ways to work em into their workflow with lower-level tasks such as sorting through data and formatting spreadsheets (to name just a couple quick examples).Clearly, Google wants Gemini to become an indispensable part of our lives both professionally and personally, as evidenced by the way its Google+ing the service into our beaks at every possible opportunity. For as useful as it can be in certain limited scenarios, though, I cant help but think Google is shooting itself in the foot with the way its presenting Gemini in whats an almost shockingly obvious-seeming miss, especially when it comes to the kind of more mainstream, not-just-early-adopter embracing the company is clearly aiming to achieve.Let me show ya what I mean.[Get level-headed knowledge in your inbox with my free Android Intelligence newsletter. Tips, insights, and other tasty treats await!]Googles Gemini interface puzzleRight now, when you go to open up Gemini on Android on one of Googles own Pixel devices, youre greeted by a screen that looks a little somethin like this:The Google Gemini full-screen interface, as seen on Android.JR Raphael, IDGSee that little tool-tip at the top? More models available choose the one that best fits my needs, you say? Okay, cool. I can get on board on with that. Lets see whats available.A quick tap on that top part of the screen, and.Googles Gemini model list, from the apps Android interface.JR Raphael, IDGWhat. The. Schmidt. Is. This.To clarify, this is the standard Google Gemini experience not any sort of beta or early access setup. This is what anyone who buys a new Pixel phone or Samsung Galaxy gadget gets when they activate whats now their devices default and prominently promoted assistant service. Its also what anyone with any other Android device is now being pushed to use in place of the classic Google Assistant, with ever-increasing aggressiveness. And I dont think I can emphasize just how overwhelming of an interface is there and smacking you square in the peepers as soon as you take that step. Its not just on Android, either. You see the same selection when using Gemini on the web, too, maybe even with a more comically over-the-top appearance:The Google Gemini interface in a desktop web browser.JR Raphael, IDGSeriously what reasonably normal person who doesnt work within Googles engineering department could possibly parse this? And who would want to?Making sense of the Gemini model messFor context, what were seeing here is a list of every different version of Gemini Googles released over recent months. Gemini 2.0 is the current version, launched just last week. Within that 2.0 framework, youve got four different possibilities to ponder:2.0 Flash for everyday tasks, more features2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental best for multi-step reasoning2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental with apps reasoning across YouTube, Maps & SearchAnd 2.0 Pro Experimental best for complex tasksErm, right.Beyond that muddled mess, you can also choose to go back to the older 1.5 Pro with Deep Research version of Gemini for in-depth answers as well as the 1.5 Pro or 1.5 Flash model. Sure why not, right?Let me be as blunt as I can be about this: Mushy-brained of a mammal as I may be, Im someone who closely follows Google and studies its services as part of my job. Im more tech-savvy than most average animals (which isnt saying much, I realize, but even so). And Ive been immersed in this particular part of the tech universe for something like 7,947 years now.And yet, I couldnt even begin to tell you what all that stuff means, in plain English, or why you might want to pick one Gemini model over another. Heck, even after reading Googles 4,000-character oeuvre about all the ins and outs of this latest Gemini 2.0 edition, I couldnt explain to you what, exactly, makes it any different to use on a practical level compared to the earlier versions nor, after spending quite a bit of time testing it, could I identify to you how its done things any better for me in any meaningful, measurable, and specific way.And that, mdear, is absolutely hilarious to me because the entire point of Gemini is that its supposed to help us understand stuff and make our lives easier. But somehow, its very interface is so frickin complex and convoluted that we practically need another version of Gemini just to decipher it and help us understand which version of Gemini were supposed to use for what and why.The irony is delightful. But all bemused chuckling aside, its also a pretty serious problem.I mean, really: Imagine one of your less savvy co-workers or maybe even your wacky cousin Winslow from West Virginia following Googles prompts to try out Gemini and then encountering this monstrous menu of mumbo-jumbo. Theres no way theyd be able to make heads or tails of it, and Id be willing to wager theyd just close the thing once and for all the second they saw it.And thats to say nothing of what happens if they actually make it past that first impression and then realize theyve gotta keep wading through that labyrinth and figuring out the appropriate Gemini version every single time they come up with a new task or question. It just isnt a good experience by any measure but especially not for a service that promises to save you time and simplify your life. And that, suffice it to say, doesnt exactly jibe with Googles goal of getting everyone in the habit of using Gemini constantly across all of their devices.Heres the bottom line: Gemini isnt a beta-level experimental feature anymore. Its a prominent public service perhaps even Googles most prominent product at the moment. Its now a core part of the companys enterprise-focused Workspace offering. For Googs sake, there was even a Super Bowl ad about it. For individuals and companies alike, its clearly meant to be serious business and yet, it still feels like a clunky developer play-space.If Google really wants people to accept Gemini as an everyday tool for workplace productivity and beyond, theyve gotta make it more accessible and aimed at actual regular-human use. It needs to be intuitive, approachable, and easy for anyone to understand. And you dont need an accuracy-challenged AI assistant to tell you this isnt the way to achieve that.Get practical tips, personal recommendations, and plain-English perspective on all the latest Googley twists with my free Android Intelligence newsletter three new things to know and try each Friday.
