• What to Do If You Receive Someone Else's Mail
    lifehacker.com
The United States Postal Service handles an average of 318 million pieces of mail every day, so there are going to be some mistakes. Carriers misread an addresses, letters shift around in the back of the truck, and people move without updating their addressesall circumstances that could result in you receiving mail intended for someone else. Heres what you should do if you get mail that doesnt belong to you. What to do if mail is delivered to the wrong addressIf the mail youve received is not only for someone else, but for a different address than yours, you have two options to correct the mistake:Deliver it yourself. If the letter is clearly intended for a nearby neighbor, and you can physically open their mailbox, feel free to deliver the letter to the correct address yourself. It isnot illegal to open someones mailbox(as long as its not locked), and its not illegal to personally forward mail to the correct address as long as the mail has proper postage. You could also knock on their door and hand it to them if you know them (or feel comfortable doing so). However, be aware thatthere are laws against placing other thingslike flyers, notes, advertisements without postage, etc.in mailboxes.Write a note and stick it in the outgoing. If the correct address is far away or you just dont feel like dealing with delivering it yourself, write a note that says something to the effect of wrong address and attach it to the wrongly delivered piece of mail with a sticky note or a paperclip. A mail carrier will pick it up next time around and it will be delivered to the correct address in the next couple days. Its best not to write your note directly on the envelope or article and risk defacing someone elses mail. If you use a marker or Sharpie and it bleeds through, it could cause the intended recipient more grief than is necessary. So use a paperclip or a sticky note instead. What to do if you receive mail for a former residentIf youre receiving someone elses mail with your correct address, you need to inform the mail carrier and post office that they no longer live there. Again, you can do that with a paper clipped note placed on the letter. To return to sender, simply write "Not at this address, return to sender" on the note and attach it to the piece of mail. Stick the mail in the outgoing box in a way that makes the error clear to your mail carrier the next time they come around. This might take a few tries, and you may even have to contact the post office if it continues.Check that the mail doesnt say [other persons name]or current resident; That mail is technically addressed to you as long as you live in that residence, whether you want to receive it or not. (Junk mail companies love that trick.) If you keep telling the post office person doesnt live here with or current resident mail, they might assume the residence is vacant and stop sending mail there entirely. When in doubt, a trip to the post office or a phone call can often clear things up.Is it illegal to open someone else's mail? You bet it is. It's also illegal to throw someone else's mail awayon purpose. Both are considered tampering (and both are considered jerk-y.) When you get someone else's mail, do not open it and do not throw it away, since both arepunishable offenses(and no one likes offending or punishment). Don't worry, if you were mindlessly tearing open your stack of mail and realized you'd received someone else's and opened in error, you won't be taken away in cuffs. The law is intended to protect against unsavory types looking to gather personal information.

  • Elden Ring Nightreign arrives on May 30
    www.engadget.com
Hark thee, foul tarnished. Those who have yearned for fresh battles against hideously wicked beasts in The Lands Between need not wait an age for such misadventures. Elden Ring Nightreign has a release date, and its not too far away. The co-op title will land on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC on May 30. We first learned about the Elden Ring spinoff at The Game Awards in December. FromSoftwares original blockbuster game arrived in 2022 and that was followed by the mammoth Shadow of the Erdtree expansion last year. This time around, you can team up with two other players or go it alone in a procedurally generated version of Limgrave, the first main area of Elden Ring. You'll be able to choose one of eight Nightfarers, each with their own set of abilities, to play as on your run. The aim is to survive three in-game days and nights until a battle with a final boss. FromSoft appears to have taken a little inspiration from battle royale games like Fortnite, as the playable area shrinks over time. Even if your entire team sees the dreaded "you died" screen before completing a run, you'll still receive a relic you can use to upgrade your characters and align them more with your personal playstyle. Some lucky ducks will actually be able to try Elden Ring Nightreign in closed beta tests that are taking place this weekend. Pre-orders for the game (which of course has several different editions) are now available too. • The 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro is $200 off at Amazon
    www.engadget.com
The MacBook Pro is certainly not a necessity for everyone and the steep price ensures that (I downgraded to an Air, myself, a few years ago). But, every once in a while, a sale makes the superior laptop seem worth it. Right now is one of those times, with the new 14-inch MacBook Pro available for $1,400, down from $1,599. The sale comes courtesy of a 10 percent off discount and an additional $39 coupon on the product page (just remember to click it before heading to check out). The 14-inch MacBook Pro has 16GB of memory and 512GB SSD storage in either Space Black or Silver. Apple's 14-inch MacBook Pro came out late last year and scored a solid 92 in our review. This rating along with naming the device our pick for best MacBook for creatives comes thanks to perks such as it fast M4 chips. It also has an exceptionally long battery life, bright display and Sharp 12MP Center Stage webcam. • Following Google, Apples maps now show Trumps Gulf of Mexico name change
    www.fastcompany.com
Apple renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on its maps Tuesday after an order by President Donald Trump was made official by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System. The move follows Google, which announced last month that it would make the change once the official listing was updated and wrote in a blog post Sunday that it had begun rolling out the change. In Googles case, the company said people in the U.S. will see Gulf of America and people in Mexico will see Gulf of Mexico. Everyone else will see both names. After taking office, Trump ordered that the water bordered by the Southern United States, Mexico and Cuba be renamed. The U.S. Geographic Names Information System officially updated the name late Sunday. Microsoft has also made the name change on its Bing maps. The Associated Press, which provides news around the world to multiple audiences, will refer to the Gulf of Mexico by its original name, which it has carried for 400 years, while acknowledging the name Gulf of America.

  • Groceries and gas prices are up, U.S. Labor Department report shows
    www.fastcompany.com
U.S. inflation accelerated last month as the cost of groceries, gas, and used cars rose, a trend that will likely underscore the Federal Reserves resolve to delay any further interest rate cuts. The consumer price index increased 3% in January from a year ago, Wednesdays report from the Labor Department showed, up from 2.9% the previous month. It has increased from a 3 1/2 year low of 2.4% in September. The figures show that after inflation steadily declined in 2023 and for much of last year, it has remained stubbornly above the Feds 2% target for roughly the past six months. Elevated prices created a major political problem for former President Joe Biden. President Donald Trump pledged to reduce prices in last years campaign, though most economists worry that his many proposed tariffs could at least temporarily increase costs.Excluding the volatile food and energy categories, core consumer prices rose 3.3% in January compared with a year ago, up from 3.2% in December. Economists closely watch core prices because they can provide a better read of inflations future path.Inflation also worsened on a monthly basis, with prices jumping 0.5% in January from December, the largest increase since August 2023. Core prices climed 0.4% last month, the most since March 2024.Inflation often jumps in January as many companies raise their prices at the beginning of the year, though the governments seasonal adjustment process is supposed to filter out those effects.Later Wednesday, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will testify before the House Financial Services Committee, where he will likely be asked about inflation and the Feds response to it. The Fed raised its benchmark rate in 2022 and 2023 to a two-decade high of 5.3% to combat inflation. With inflation down significantly from its 9.1% peak in June 2022, it cut its rate to about 4.3% in its final three meetings last year.Early Wednesday, Trump said on social media that interest rates should be lowered, something which would go hand in hand with upcoming Tariffs!!! Yet the tick up in consumer prices makes it less likely the Fed will cut rates anytime soon.Fed officials are mostly confident that inflation over time will head lower, but they want to see further evidence that it is declining before cutting their key rate any further. The Feds rate typically influences other borrowing costs for things like mortgages, auto loans, and credit cards.Inflations recent uptick is a major reason the Federal Reserve has paused its interest rate cuts, after implementing three of them last year. On Tuesday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said we do not need to be in a hurry to implement further reductions in testimony to the Senate Banking Committee. The Trump administrations tariff policy could lift prices in the coming months. Trump on Monday imposed 25% taxes on steel and aluminum imports, and has pledged to impose more tariffs. Economists at Goldman Sachs forecast that yearly core inflation would fall almost a full percentage point, to 2.3%, by the end of this year, absent any import duties. But they expect tariffs will raise end-of-year inflation to 2.8%.On Tuesday, Fed Chair Powell acknowledged that higher tariffs could lift inflation and limit the central banks ability to cut rates, calling it a possible outcome. But he emphasized that it would depend on how many imports are hit with tariffs and for how long.In some cases it doesnt reach the consumer much, and in some cases it does, Powell said. And it really does depend on facts that we we havent seen yet.Christopher Rugaber, AP Economics Writer

  • The World's First Piece of Furniture Made from Fossil-Free Steel
    www.core77.com
Plastic is made from fossil fuels. Steel isn't, but we must burn an awful lot of fossil fuels in order to produce it. Iron ore must be pulled out of the ground, typically using gas-powered machinery; we then have to burn coal to make coke, in order to extract that iron in a blast furnace, which is also powered by coal.Incredibly, Swedish Steel AB has come up with a way to make fossil-free steel. Their ore supplier, LKAB, pulls the stuff out of the ground with electricity-powered mining equipment. Rather than coke, green hydrogen (made using wind, hydro and solar energy in Sweden) is injected. The furnaces are electric, also powered by renewables. The casting is done using electric induction heating rather than the material being molted in a coal-fired furnace. Veteran Swedish furniture designer Emma Olbers has designed the world's first piece of furniture made from fossil-free steel. Her Tellus bench, intended as street furniture, features armrests wide enough to rest a cup of coffee on, and the seating angles were created with ergonomics in mind. The Tellus bench is in production by Norwegian outdoor manufacturer Vestre. Below Olbers discusses her design philosophy and what she was going for with the bench. (Interestinglyperhaps this is a translation thingher take on "form follows function" is "forms follow planetary boundaries.)
