  • SAP taps Databricks to enhance AI readiness with new Business Data Cloud
    venturebeat.com
Join our daily and weekly newsletters for the latest updates and exclusive content on industry-leading AI coverage. Learn MoreGerman software giant SAP is pushing the bar on the data front to power next-gen AI use cases. The company today introduced Business Data Cloud (BDC), a new SaaS product that embraces lakehouse architecture to help teams enrich their SAP ecosystem data with external data assets from different source systems and drive long-term value. The product is the outcome of a landmark collaboration with data ecosystem major Databricks. Essentially, SAP BDC natively integrates capabilities and data from Databricks data intelligence platform. This removes the need for creating and maintaining complex pipelines and creates a harmonized data foundation for advanced AI agents and analytical workloads.Several enterprises, including Henkel, are using BDC to power their AI projects. SAP itself is using the enriched BDC to power a new era of Joule agents focused on specific domains like finance, service and sales. The development makes SAP another notable player, much like Microsoft and Salesforce, bolstering its data platform to lay down the foundation for AI.SAPs revamped data foundationOver the years, SAP has established itself as one of the leading players in enterprise resource planning (ERP) with S4/HANA cloud and several mission-critical applications for finance, supply chain and human capital management. These apps produce petabyte-scale data with business context and have been powering AI and analytical value for teams, via the companys business technology platform (BTP).So far, SAP BTP has had a datasphere that allows enterprises to connect data from SAP with information from non-SAP systems and eventually link it with SAP analytics cloud and other internal tools for downstream applications. Now, the company is evolving this experience into the unified BDC, natively powered by Databricks. What SAP business data cloud has on offerWhat this means is that SAP is embracing lakehouse architecture, creating a unified foundation that combines all SAP data products from finance, spend and supply chain data in SAP S/4HANA and SAP Ariba, to learning and talent data in SAP SuccessFactors with structured and unstructured data from other varied yet business-critical systems, stored in Databricks.Once the data is unified (via zero-copy, bi-directional sharing), SAP BDC can leverage Databricks-specific capabilities for workloads like data warehousing, data engineering and AI, all governed by Databricks unity catalog. We take all of these different data products, which are provisioned and managed by SAPand we will persist them into the lakehouse of SAP business data cloud, in a harmonized data model, Irfan Khan, president and CPO for SAP data and analytics, told VentureBeat. This lakehouse will have Databricks capabilities for users to build upon.Previously, said Khan, users who had a large percentage of their data in Databricks and SAP data in S4 or BW had to build and manage complex pipelines and replicate all the data assets to the SAP platform while rebuilding the entire semantics and the core data model at the same time. The approach took time and required them to keep their pipelines updated with changing data. However, with Databricks native integration, users have access to everything in one place and can directly do data engineering, data science and other tasks on top of the BDC.In Datasphere, you had a means of doing a similar thing, but they were all customer-managed data products, Khan explained. So, you had to go into the data platform, select the data sources and build the data pipelines. Then, you had to figure out what to replicate. Here, its all managed by SAP.What this means for enterprisesAt its core, this Databricks-powered product gives teams a faster, simpler way to unify and mobilize their business data assets locked within SAP and Databricks environments. The combined, semantically-enhanced data will pave the way for building next-gen AI applications aimed at different use cases. For instance, a team could use Databricks Mosaic AI capabilities to develop domain-specific AI agents that could use context from SAPs business data as well as external Databricks-specific data to automate certain human capital management or supply chain functions.Notably, SAP itself is tapping this enhanced data foundation to power ready-to-use Joule agents aimed at automating tasks and accelerating workflows across sales, service and finance functions. These agents deeply understand end-to-end processes and collaborate to solve complex business problems.Beyond this, BDC will have an insight apps capability, which will allow users to connect their data products and AI models with external real-time data to deliver advanced analytics and planning across business functions.More data partners to comeWhile the partnership underscores a big move for both Databricks and SAP, it is important to note that the Ali Ghodsi-led data major wont be the only one bolstering BDC.According to Khan, data sharing and ecosystem openness are the companys first design principles and they will expand to other data platforms through their partner connect capabilities. This means an enterprise user will be able to choose the platform they prefer (or that they are locked into) and bi-directionally share data for targeted use cases.Daily insights on business use cases with VB DailyIf you want to impress your boss, VB Daily has you covered. • Bose headphones and earbuds are nearly 25 percent off for Presidents Day
    www.theverge.com
If you need a new pair of headphones, earbuds, or a portable Bluetooth speaker, Boses ongoing Presidents Day sale presents a few compelling options. In fact, now through February 17th, several QuietComfort and SoundLink devices are receiving steep discounts, including some of our favorite models.RelatedSeveral products are matching their lowest price to date, such as the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, which are available from Amazon, Best Buy, and Bose for $229 ($70 off). Theyre a strange-looking pair at first glance, but the Ultra Open are designed to clip onto your ears and push audio to your eardrums without plugging your ear canals like a traditional pair of earbuds. Their grip isnt particularly tight, either, ensuring a comfortable fit even during longer listening sessions. The goal of their open-style design is to help you remain aware of whats going on around you something that is useful if want to remain present outside or keep an ear to the ground for children or visitors while at home. Unfortunately, that unconventional build also means youll sacrifice some bass responsiveness and overall volume compared to traditional earbuds, though the resulting audio quality is still surprisingly effective for what they are.Bose Ultra Open Earbuds$229$29923% off$229The Bose Ultra Open Earbuds use an open design and lightly grip your ear, with tech that can precisely direct audio to directly into your canals. Theyre an interesting and effective alternative to bone-conduction headphones that serve a similar purpose, but cant match the satisfying sound of traditional earbuds. If youre after more traditional buds, the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds should be on your radar. Theyre down to $249 ($50 off) at Amazon, Best Buy, and Boses online storefront, which is $20 more than their best price to date. They offer some of the best noise-canceling performance in their class and are capable of delivering Boses signature sound. They can also leverage Boses take on spatial audio, enabling a greater level of immersion with select tracks (though it works better with some songs than others).Immersive Audio is one of the primary reasons to consider upgrading from the QuietComfort Earbuds II, which are available for $199 ($80 off) from Bose. If you already own those, it may be worth staying put as the QC Ultra Earbuds sound nearly the same in standard listening modes. Bose also updated the newer pair last year with multipoint Bluetooth support, and while they dont natively support Qi wireless charging, you can purchase a separate cover for $49 that adds the functionality.Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds$249$29917% off$249With dynamic, rich sound and the best noise cancellation available in true wireless earbuds, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds are a terrific pick if you want to listen to your music in peace. Read our review. You can also save a bit on the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones, which are on sale at Amazon, Best Buy, and Boses online store for $349 ($80 off) a mere $20 shy of their lowest price to date. Theyre just as comfortable and balanced as the older QuietComfort 45 and Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 they take after; however, they benefit from better call quality and a more natural-sounding transparency mode. The QC Ultra also feature an attractive, foldable design and several newer features, including support for Boses Immersive Audio.Like the Ultra Earbuds, Immersive Audio is a fun attempt to make you feel as though youre attending a concert, but it isnt always convincing. That mode also reduces battery life, bringing the total runtime down to around 18 hours and ultimately negating one of the main benefits of over-ear headphones. Its also worth noting that the QC Ultra sport a single physical multi-function button and primarily rely on touch controls for volume and playback control, though you can customize the multifunction button using the Bose app.Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones$349$42919% off$349Boses latest flagship headphones are a replacement for the Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 that offer a more travel-friendly design, spatial audio, better call quality, excellent comfort, and some of the best noise cancellation around. Read our review. If you prefer a portable Bluetooth speaker, you can also get the Bose SoundLink Max for around $329 ($70 off) from Amazon, Best Buy, and Bose, which is $30 more than its lowest price to date. It delivers powerful stereo sound and lasts up to 20 hours per charge, with a battery that can reverse charge other devices via a built-in USB-C port. It doesnt support lossless audio through said port, but there is a dedicated 3.5mm aux input, which is rare these days. The SoundLink Max is a bit heavier (and larger) than your average Bluetooth speaker at 4.9 pounds, but the removable carrying handle helps with transport. Its also ruggedly built with an IP67 rating for protection against water and dust. We also like that you can pair it with up to two devices simultaneously, but we wish there were speakerphone and virtual assistant features, especially given the substantial price.Bose SoundLink Max$329$39918% off$329Boses SoundLink Max improves on the smaller flex with true stereo sound and very powerful sound at that. Its got a removable handle for easy transport, and theres an aux input for playing audio when you want to listen at a higher quality than what Bluetooth can deliver. Read our review.A few more Bose dealsIf the SoundLink Max is too heavy and costly, the latest SoundLink Flex on sale for $129 ($20 off) from Amazon, Best Buy, and Bose offers similar durability with a lighter, slimmer profile. It lasts up to 12 hours per charge, and while theres no built-in stereo playback like the Max, you can pair two of them to gain that effect. The Bose SoundLink Micro is even tinier, enough so that it can easily slip into your pocket. That also means its a lot cheaper at $79 ($40 off), which is its current price from Bose. Its a little long in the tooth compared to the bigger SoundLink speakers, as evidenced by its Micro USB charging port (ugh, I know). It also doesnt have multipoint support, though you can pair it with other SoundLink speakers. Plus, theres nothing else in Boses lineup with an integrated clip that can easily attach to, say, the handlebars on your bike. You can get the Bose Smart Soundbar 900 for $649 ($250 off) from Bose, which is $50 more than its lowest price to date. It can be a powerful home theater upgrade on its own thanks to Dolby Atmos support, which uses several proprietary techniques to simulate height and width without additional speakers. You can use HDMI eARC for one-cable TV audio and control, or sync devices over Bluetooth and hook up other Bose speakers via Wi-Fi for multiroom playback. It also supports Apples AirPlay 2, Chromecast, and voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.See More:

  • Whats with the EPA seizing gold bars?
    www.theverge.com
The Trump administration is attempting to take back around $20 billion of funding that the Biden administration previously awarded to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.Trumps appointee to lead the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Lee Zeldin, posted a cryptic video last night and followed up with a press release today claiming roughly $20 billion of your tax dollars were parked at an outside financial institution by the Biden EPA. He later clarified that at this point, there is zero reason to suspect any wrongdoing by the bank, but that the financial agent agreement with the bank needs to be instantly terminated and the money returned to the EPA.Limited details Zeldin shared about the money seem to point to the $27 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF) created when Congress passed the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. The fund is meant to prevent pollution by supporting new clean energy projects, particularly those in low-income neighborhoods, Native and rural communities, and other communities that havent had as much access to these technologies in the past.$20 billion of your tax dollars were parked at an outside financial institution. They are blocking tens of billions of dollars in public-private partnerships from investing in projects across the country. Whether it is a local credit union offering low interest loans to small businesses to install solar panels and lower their electricity bills, or a municipality securing funding to upgrade century old buildings with modern windows and HVAC systems, these projects are now uncertain, Kyle Kammien, a policy director at nonprofit Dream.Org, said in an emailed statement. To make things more confusing, Zeldin refers to the funding as gold bars, referencing a video from the right-wing group Project Veritas that filmed an EPA employee talking about distributing funding to nonprofit organizations, states, and tribes. The Biden administration hustled to disburse most Inflation Reduction Act money ahead of Donald Trump stepping into office; Trump campaigned on a pledge to rescind unspent IRA funds. The employee, who appears to have been filmed without their knowledge, says now were just trying to get the money out as fast as possible before they can come in and stop it all it truly like feels were on the Titanic and were throwing gold bars off the edge.Fortunately, my awesome team at EPA has found the gold bars, Zeldin says, talking about $20 billion in funding for groups including a coalition of nonprofits called Climate United. The coalition was awarded close to $7 billion through one of the programs of the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, although Zeldin doesnt specifically name the GGRF.The EPA didnt immediately respond to a press inquiry from The Verge about which programs Zeldin is targeting. Bloomberg and The Washington Post report that his comments indicate that the EPA administrator intends to stop GGRF funding, and the Post reports that the bank Citi is overseeing the distribution of those funds.Zeldin describes the Biden-era awards as a rush job with reduced oversight in his video address. Democratic lawmakers have challenged Donald Trumps ability to claw back funding approved by Congress through the Inflation Reduction Act, so any effort to place those gold bars back on the Titanic is likely to face a legal battle.See More:

  • Anthropic AI Launches the Anthropic Economic Index: A Data-Driven Look at AIs Economic Role
    www.marktechpost.com
Artificial Intelligence is increasingly integrated into various sectors, yet there is limited empirical evidence on its real-world application across industries. Traditional research methodssuch as predictive modeling and user surveysstruggle to capture AIs evolving role in workplaces. This makes it difficult to assess its influence on productivity, labor markets, and economic structures. A more data-driven approach is necessary to gain meaningful insights into how AI is being utilized and its broader implications.Anthropic AI has launched the Anthropic Economic Index, an initiative designed to track AIs role in economic activities. The first report, based on millions of anonymized Claude conversations, maps AI usage across various job categories using the U.S. Department of Labors O*NET Database. The findings suggest that AI is primarily used in software development and writing tasks, with these categories accounting for nearly half of all AI interactions. Furthermore, 36% of occupations incorporate AI for at least a quarter of their associated tasks, indicating its growing presence in diverse industries. This framework provides a structured approach to observing AIs economic footprint over time.Technical Approach and Key BenefitsThe Anthropic Economic Index leverages Clio, a privacy-preserving analysis tool, to study over four million conversations from Claude.ai users. By categorizing AI interactions according to occupational tasks defined in O*NET, the research highlights patterns in AI adoption. Some key observations include:AI is widely used in software engineering and content creation, reflecting its strength in technical and creative domains. The depth of AI usage varies by occupation, with 4% of professions using AI for at least 75% of their tasks.Cognitive tasks, such as reading comprehension, writing, and critical thinking, dominate AI interactions, whereas physical and managerial tasks see lower engagement.AI adoption is highest in mid-to-high wage occupations, particularly in the technology sector, while its presence in lower-wage or highly specialized fields remains limited. One of the primary benefits of this approach is its ability to continuously track AIs economic role, helping businesses, policymakers, and researchers understand how AI is reshaping the workforce.Key Insights and PatternsThe study distinguishes between AI augmentationwhere AI enhances human capabilitiesand automation, where AI independently completes tasks. Findings indicate that 57% of AI interactions involve augmentation, such as refining ideas or generating drafts, while 43% are automation-driven, where AI executes tasks with minimal human intervention.Other key observations include:Software development and data science are the most AI-intensive fields, accounting for 37.2% of AI-related conversations.Writing, education, and business operations also show significant AI usage, particularly in content creation and analytical tasks.Occupations requiring physical labor, such as construction and healthcare support, demonstrate lower AI adoption.AI use is most common in jobs requiring a bachelors degree, especially those in Job Zone 4 (substantial preparation required), whereas highly specialized fields (Job Zone 5), such as medicine and law, show lower adoption due to professional and regulatory constraints.ConclusionThe Anthropic Economic Index provides a structured way to examine AIs impact on various occupations. While AI adoption is growing, its role differs across professionsenhancing work in some areas while automating tasks in others. By offering a data-backed perspective on how AI is integrated into the economy, this initiative enables better-informed discussions on the future of work. As AI evolves, continued analysis will be essential to understanding its long-term economic effects and guiding thoughtful policy decisions.Check outthePaper and Technical Details. All credit for this research goes to the researchers of this project.
