  • SolarWinds CEO on $4.4B Acquisition, Calming Uncertainty, and Securing the Future
    www.informationweek.com
Shane Snider, Senior Writer, InformationWeekFebruary 13, 20253 Min ReadSOPA Images Limited via Alamy StockObservability and IT management software company SolarWinds shocked the IT community with last weeks announcement that it would go private after a $4.4 billion acquisition by private equity firm Turn/River Capital.News of 2025s biggest-so-far technology deal was met with some skepticism by analysts and cybersecurity experts, who worry about the Turn/Rivers long-term plans and security implications. SolarWinds was the victim of a historic nation-state cyberattack that rocked the industry in 2021. Security experts worry what a transition to a privately held organization will mean for transparency going forward. Will Townsend, vice president and principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy took to X to suggest that the companys massive hack led to the sale. Going private through a PE is no surprise, he wrote. [SolarWinds] never did enough to reassure investors and customers that it had learned and implemented measures to prevent that epic supply chain hack from happening again. But in a live interview with InformationWeek, SolarWinds CEO Sudhakar Ramakrishna says its the companys success even after the attack that drove Turn/Rivers acquisition play that led to the blockbuster deal. SolarWinds most recent financial report shows $200 million in revenue for the third quarter of 2024, a 6% year-over-year increase.Related:Probably the most significant reason why Turn/River was attracted to us is the fact that weve continued making progress on the SolarWinds platform and continue to make progress on every metric from a business standpoint when outside investors look at us, theyre obviously looking at the business trajectory, which is unquestionable at this point, he says.SolarWinds customers and partners should look forward to continued growth, Ramakrishna says.Customers should expect us to ramp faster innovations on our SolarWinds platform with our focus on time to value, time to remediate, and time to resolve, we are making good progress organically on all three of those dimensions and well be accelerating that progress. He says the company will also be making improvements to packaging and pricing. Customers should experience and expect everything from us that they have come to know and like about us. Hopefully, they should get more from us in terms of how we give them solutions that accelerate their business transformation.Questions of SecurityHow SolarWinds handles security going forward with the transition to a private entity will be watched closely by the cybersecurity industry. Brian Fox, co-founder and CTO of software supply chain management firm Sonatype, says the SolarWinds attack exposed the level of attacks on critical supply chains.Related:The SolarWinds hack perfectly showcased the rise of sophisticated software supply chain attacks, as it compromised high-profile networks, including those of nine US government agencies, Fox says in an email interview. As SolarWinds charts a new path forward, I can only hope that lessons learned would not be forgotten amid the organizational change.SolarWinds Ramakrishna says the company wants to allay those security concerns. I think its a well-placed fear But as I engage with the Turn/River team, one of my important emphases was on secure-by-design and the initiatives that I started back in 2021, he says. Theres a need for us to continue to help ensure transparency with customers, which then obviously leads to trust. I dont expect that to change. The acquisition will cost Turn/River $18.50 per share in an all-case deal. The purchase price represents a 35% premium on SolarWinds 90-day average stock price at the time of the deal. There is broad excitement, Ramakrishna says. People within the company view this as a great validation for their work. The team has worked super hard to get to this point, but we also realize that our jobs are never done. We just have to keep earning the trust of our customers and our partners on a daily basis. Its business as usual for us.Related:The deal still needs regulatory approval and is expected to close in the second quarter. Investment firms Thoma Bravo and Silver Lake, who hold 65% of the outstanding voting securities, approved the acquisition along with SolarWinds board of directors.About the AuthorShane SniderSenior Writer, InformationWeekShane Snider is a veteran journalist with more than 20 years of industry experience. • Pig-to-Human Organ Transplants Will Finally Begin Clinical Trials This Year
    www.scientificamerican.com
February 13, 20254 min readAnimal-to-Human Organ Transplants Hit Long-Awaited Testing MilestoneUp to 50 transplant patients will receive a genetically modified pig kidney in a clinical trial that will launch this summerBy Tanya Lewis edited by Dean VisserTowana Looney, 53, received a gene-edited pig kidney transplant at NYU Langone Health in November, 2024.The FDA just approved the first clinical trial to evaluate such transplants. Angela Weiss/AFP via Getty ImagesThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved the first-ever clinical trial of the transplantation of a nonhuman animal organa genetically modified pig kidneyinto living human recipients. The study is set to begin by midyear and will initially involve six participants, but it could eventually include up to 50.The study will allow researchers to evaluate the safety and efficacy of an approach to substituting pig kidneys for human ones in people who desperately need a transplant yet are either ineligible to receive a human kidney or unlikely to be offered one within five years. It is a very important milestone, says Robert Montgomery, chair of the surgery department and director of the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, which he says is one of two sites for the study. A clinical trial is the gold standard for assessing the safety and efficacy of a new drug or treatment. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today.More than 103,000 people in the U.S. are currently waiting for an organ transplant, and a shortage of donor organs means many will die before one becomes available. The idea of xenotransplantsoperations to transplant organs from other animals into humanshas been around for at least a century. Early attempts used kidneys, livers and hearts from baboons, chimpanzees and other creatures. Most of these early experiments failed, in large part because the hosts immune system rejected the other species organ. But in recent years, big advances in genetic manipulation have revived xenotransplantation efforts.Clinical trials are important because they have clear end points for data on safety and efficacy, as well as guidelines to establish who can participate and to ensure that any adverse events are reported. A handful of surgeries have been allowed outside of this framework, but these could only provide limited data compared with a formal trial. In 2022 a patient named David Bennett became the first living person to receive a genetically modified pig heart transplant. A team at the University of Maryland School of Medicine performed the surgery using a kidney with 10 edits to its genetic code from a pig engineered by Revivicor (a subsidiary of United Therapeutics, the company providing the organs for the new trial). Sadly, Bennett developed complications and died two months later. The following year, teams at NYU Langone Health and the University of Alabama at Birmingham transplanted single-gene-edited pig kidneys into human recipients who had undergone brain death but had some bodily systems artificially maintained for a short while. The recipients families had consented to let the scientists do so to study the organs function. Then, last March, Richard Slayman became the first living person to receive a modified pig kidney, one with 69 gene edits made by a company called eGenesis. Slayman, who was already seriously ill before the surgery, passed away nearly two months later. Two more genetically modified kidney xenotransplants have since been performed: Last year NYU Langone Health transplanted a pig kidney into a woman named Towana Looney, who is still doing well nearly three months later. And last week Tim Andrews, a patient at Massachusetts General Hospital, received a pig kidney made by eGenesis. Some of these surgeries were approved under the FDAs expanded access program, which allows very sick people to receive experimental treatments on a compassionate use basis. Others were part of a small pilot study of eGenesis pig organs that was greenlit by the FDA. But researchers had long awaited a full clinical trial, which would allow a broader and healthier range of individuals to be enrolled to better assess xenotransplant feasibility in a wider population. The new trial will evaluate the rate of adverse events or death from any cause and the amount of protein in the urine (a sign of kidney malfunction)as well as zoonotic infections (those carried by animals) and other infectionsaccording to Dewey Steadman, head of investor relations at United Therapeutics. It is a combination phase 1-2-3 clinical trial, which means it will assess both safety and efficacy in a continuous manner. After the first transplant, there will be a 12-week waiting period. Once the first six patients have been transplanted for 12 weeks, an independent committee will evaluate the procedures safety and efficacy before expanding to a larger cohort of up to 50 people. The kidney for each transplantdubbed a UKidney by its makerswill come from pigs with 10 gene edits: six add human genes that make the organ more compatible with the human immune system, and four inactivate pig genes that can cause rejection or make the organ grow too large. To qualify for the trial, participants must fit one of two criteria: either they must not qualify to be listed for a human kidney transplant, or they can be on the transplant list but unlikely to receive an organor likely to die before they do sowithin five years. All participants will be 55 to 70 years old, have end-stage kidney disease and have been on dialysis for at least six months. They must also be free from other serious medical problems. In contrast, most of the people who have received a xenotransplant on a compassionate use basis have been severely ill, making it harder to assess the success of the transplant itself. This is the culmination of years of work with the FDA, who have been incredibly collaborative in this process, Steadman says. Both we and the FDA are really committed to bringing this [technology] to market to help patients who have no other options right now besides dialysis.

  • Measles Outbreak in Children Grows in One of Texas Least Vaccinated Counties
    www.scientificamerican.com
February 13, 20254 min readMeasles Outbreak in Children Grows in One of Texas Least Vaccinated CountiesWith hospitalizations and at least nine confirmed cases, healthofficials race to contain a growing outbreak in a community with low vaccinationBy Amy Maxmen & KFF Health News A dose of measles vaccine. Gaines County, Texas, has a growing measles outbreak and low vaccination rates. Joe Raedle/Getty ImagesA measles outbreak is growing in a Texas county with dangerously low vaccination rates. In late January, two school-age children from Gaines County were hospitalized with measles. Since an estimated 1 in 5 people with the disease end up in the hospital, the two cases suggested a larger outbreak. As of Feb. 12, there were 24 cases, mainly among children, with at least 14 hospitalizations, said Zach Holbrooks, executive director of the South Plains Public Health District, which includes Gaines. A few cases are in surrounding counties. The department is investigating many other potential cases in hopes of treating people quickly and curbing the spread of the virus. There may be active cases out there and the individual has chosen not to seek medical attention, Holbrooks said.On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today.Public health practitioners warn such outbreaks will become more common because of scores of laws around the U.S. pending and passed that ultimately lower vaccine rates. Many of the measures allow parents to more easily exempt their children from school vaccine requirements, and a swell of vaccine misinformation has led to record rates of exemptions. As Robert F. Kennedy Jr., one of the most influential purveyors of dangerous vaccine misinformation, prepares to take the helm of the Department of Health and Human Services, researchers say such bills have a higher chance of passing and that more parents will refuse vaccines because of false information spread at the highest levels of government.Mr. Kennedy has been an opponent of many health-protecting and life-saving vaccines, such as those that prevent measles and polio, scores of Nobel Prize laureates wrote in a letter to the Senate. Having him head HHS, they wrote, would put the publics health in jeopardy. Most people who arent protected by vaccination will get measles if exposed. Gaines County has one of the lowest rates of childhood vaccination in Texas. At a local public school district in the community of Loop, only 46% of kindergarten students have gotten vaccines against measles, mumps, and rubella. Vaccination rates may be even lower at private schools and within homeschool groups, which dont always report the information.Holbrooks team is scrambling to track transmission, ensure that kids and babies seek prompt care, and offer measles vaccines to anyone who hasnt yet gotten them.We are going to see more kids infected. We will see more families taking time off from work. More kids in the hospital, said Rekha Lakshmanan, chief strategy officer for The Immunization Partnership in Houston, a nonprofit that advocates for vaccine access. This is the tip of the iceberg. As a rule, at least 95% of people need to be vaccinated against measles for a community to be well protected. That threshold is high enough to protect infants too young for the vaccine, people who cant take the vaccine for medical reasons, and anyone who doesnt mount a strong, lasting immune response to it.Measles is extremely contagious, so health workers preemptively treated infants too young to be vaccinated who had shared the emergency room with children later diagnosed with the virus, said Katherine Wells, public health director in Lubbock, Texas. Some children from Gaines were hospitalized in that county. The disease can cause severe complications, and about one of every thousand children with measles die.An outbreak among a largely unvaccinated population in Samoa in 2019 and 2020 caused 83 deaths, mainly among children, and more than 5,700 cases. Kennedy, who peddles misinformation about measles vaccines, had visited the island earlier on a trip arranged by a Samoan anti-vaccine influencer, according to a 2021 blog post by Kennedy.Without evidence, Kennedy cast doubt on the fact that measles caused the tragedy in Samoa. We dont know what was killing them, he said at his first confirmation hearing. Samoas top health official denounced this evasion as a complete lie, in an interview with The Associated Press.Last school year, the number of kindergartners exempted from a vaccine requirement 3.3% was higher than ever reported before, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Numbers were far higher than that in Gaines County, where nearly 1 in 5 children in kindergarten had a vaccine exemption for philosophical or religious reasons in 2023-24.Over the past couple of years, several states have allowed more parents to obtain exemptions. Already, about 25 bills have been filed in the 2025 Texas legislative session that could limit vaccination in various ways. Were seeing a level of momentum this legislative session that weve never seen in the past, Lakshaman said. Changes are afoot at the local level, too. For example, a school board in the Houston area voted to remove references to vaccines in its curriculum. There is a top-down and bottom-up assault on these protections, Lakshaman said.About 80% of the public believes that the benefits of the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines outweigh the risks, according to a 2025 KFF poll.Lawmakers who put forth dangerous policies need to know the people they hear from dont represent the majority, Lakshaman said. Her group offers resources on its website to help people influence decisions on vaccination policies.KFF Health News, formerly known as Kaiser Health News (KHN), is a national newsroom that produces in-depth journalism about health issues and is one of the core operating programs at KFF the independent source for health policy research, polling, and journalism.

Sunless Sea studio's Fallen London tabletop RPG smashes crowdfunding goal, with 500K raised in two daysAnd there's still 28 days left.Image credit: Failbetter Games/Eurogamer News by Matt Wales News Reporter Published on Feb. 13, 2025 Just days into its Kickstarter campaign, Sunless Sea developer Failbetter's Fallen London tabletop RPG adaptation has smashed its crowdfunding goal, raising over half a million pounds.Fallen London, if you're unfamiliar, is a free-to-play browser-based narrative adventure that's been steadily expanding since its launch in 2009. At its heart is an alternate-universe version of Victorian London that was stolen by bats and carried to a vast underground cavern system deep beneath the Earth's surface - the centre of a darkly whimsical universe Failbetter has revisited in three standalone games: Sunless Sea, Sunless Sky, and Mask of Rose. All three of those titles started life as Kickstarter campaigns, but for its latest crowdfunding endeavour, Failbetter is doing something a little bit different. Working in conjunction with Magpie Games, it's stepping away from the digital realm to crowdfund an officially licensed tabletop roleplaying game based on the Fallen London universe.A brief overview of the Fallen London roleplaying game.Watch on YouTubeBeing a Kickstarter, there are a variety of stretch goals and reward tiers, but the meat of the campaign consists of the Fallen London roleplaying game Core Book and the Guide to London supplement. Between them both, players can find all the rules, setting details, plot hooks, character types, conflicts, concerns, and dynamic systems - plus a sample 'venture' - they'll need as they start and chart their journey through the cavernous Neath. There's obviously a lot more nuance to the Fallen London tabletop RPG than a single paragraph can do justice to, and there's plenty more detail (alongside a video play-through) on its crowdfunding page. And what's there is clearly resonating with potential backers; the campaign has already smashed its $50K funding target - raising more than $626K, or a little over half a million pounds - at the time of writing. And that's with 28 days still to go.As to what Failbetter might be planning next in the world of video games following 2023's darkly romantic visual novel Mask of the Rose, the developer hasn't yet said. But the studio, which recently celebrated its 15th birthday, continues to expand Fallen London and it's also confirmed an unannounced game is in the works.

  • How to Build a Treehouse: Our Complete Guide to Crafting the Ideal Backyard Hideaway
    www.architecturaldigest.com
A solid hardwood tree is the foundation of this DIY project. You need to select a strong, healthy tree with deep roots and strong branches, says Michael Feazel, CEO of Roof Maxx. Oak and maple are the ideal treehouse trees, in my opinion.Account for the trees placement in the yard and consider how the treehouse will affect things like light and shadow, the view, and the rain or snowfall in the space. And if you have any doubts about the vitality and viability of the tree you are considering for your treehouse building project, consult with a professional arborist.Should I build a treehouse from scratch or use a treehouse kit? There are essentially two approaches to building your own treehouse: designing it from scratch or using a treehouse kit. Deciding between building from scratch [or] using a kit really depends on the vibe youre after and the level of craftsmanship youre comfortable with, Harvey says. If youre not sure about going full DIY, kits are a good middle ground. They usually come with precut wood, hardware, and instructions, which can save time and headaches. Look for kits that offer flexibility in terms of design so you can add your own personality. If you have some carpentry experience and want to try to DIY your treehouse design, building a treehouse from scratch might be best for you. But if youre looking for some assistance, consider calling in the professionals or purchasing a treehouse building kit to help you along the way.Photo: Sturti/Getty ImagesFor the full experience, building from scratch gives you complete creative control, Harvey says. Its the way I personally love to design, as it allows for custom touches like wraparound balconies, multiple levels, and unique features like a rope bridge or secret passagesor a pulley, zip line, climbing wall, trap door, or whatever else you dream up.Regardless, make a full plan ahead of time, complete with blueprints showing the measurements and materials. The only parts of your treehouse design that should be left more to whim are the finishing elements that are purely ornamental. How to build a treehouseWhat items do I need to build a treehouse? You have to choose durable hardware for your treehouse, and thats true in terms of wood, fasteners, and roofing materials. Use purpose-built hardware, such as lag bolts ora treehouseattachment bolt (TAB), to anchor the structure securely while allowing thetreeto grow and flex naturally, says architect and founder of QY Models Ping Wang. Use sustainably sourced or reclaimed wood for construction, and avoid toxic chemicals in paints, stains, or adhesives.Building with rot-resistant wood is key to a long-lasting treehouse.Photo: Bruce Turner/Getty ImagesAdding to that, Harvey says: For the build itself, use treated wood thats resistant to rot, especially for the platforms and supports. You can also consider cedar or redwood, both of which are quite weather-resistant, but an exterior coating is still a good idea.
