  • Wrist-worn metronome has the sophistication and majesty of a classic timepiece
    www.yankodesign.com
Despite the practical and hi-tech appeal of smartwatches, analog watches, a.k.a. mechanical watches, still havent fallen out of fashion. In fact, their value has become even more prominent as a sort of counter-culture to what some might see as an irreverent commoditization of a timeless tool. There is, after all, a particular charm in seeing the dozens of interlocking gears turning in sync, all for the purpose of telling you the time. These mechanisms have long enamored many young minds, some of which have grown up to become expert watchmakers. Of course, the skill and eye for detail used in making these intricate timepieces can also be used in other ways. Case in point is this luxurious-looking accessory that looks like a classic wristwatch, except that it doesnt keep time but instead keeps the beat.Designer: Gaku OkadaThe primary purpose of a watch is to track the passing of seconds, minutes, and hours, all of which are, in theory, always uniform and never go faster or slower for all eternity. There are other things that go tick and tock but dont have a fixed measure, at least not forever. A metronome is a traditional tool used to measure and keep track of those rhythms, often used to help students learn and pros keep in sync with other musicians.Youd think that, other than the act of counting, these two time-tracking objects would have nothing in common. Normally youd be right, but the Tempo Rubato wants to prove otherwise. The product of a watchmaking graduate students love for both the craft as well as jazz, this wristpiece, named after variations in tempo, gives the metronome not only a more portable form but also a more elegant design. You might think itd be trivial to turn a mechanical watch into such a counting device, but have you ever seen a watch where you can make it go faster or slower? Being able to adjust the tempo, even while the metronome is already running, is one of the notable feats that the Tempo Rubato is capable of. The other is that it never loses count, no matter how hard you beat a drum while wearing it.Image courtesy of: Monochrome Watches>The Tempo Rubato successfully masquerades as a wristwatch and almost behaves like one. A push of its lone button starts and stops the metronome while turning the bezel effectively changes the beats per minute or BPM. Sadly, it doesnt tell the time, which is both expected yet also disappointing. But the young watchmaking apprentice does have his sights on designing a next-gen Tempo Rubato that will be able to count seconds, minutes, and hours as well. You know, like a normal wristwatch.Image courtesy of: The Asahi ShimbunThe post Wrist-worn metronome has the sophistication and majesty of a classic timepiece first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • ReasonFlux: Elevating LLM Reasoning with Hierarchical Template Scaling
    www.marktechpost.com
Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated exceptional problem-solving abilities, yet complex reasoning taskssuch as competition-level mathematics or intricate code generationremain challenging. These tasks demand precise navigation through vast solution spaces and meticulous step-by-step deliberation. Existing methods, while improving accuracy, often suffer from high computational costs, rigid search strategies, and difficulty generalizing across diverse problems. In this paper researchers introduced a new framework, ReasonFlux that addresses these limitations by reimagining how LLMs plan and execute reasoning steps using hierarchical, template-guided strategies.Recent approaches to enhance LLM reasoning fall into two categories: deliberate search and reward-guided methods. Techniques like Tree of Thoughts (ToT) enable LLMs to explore multiple reasoning paths, while Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) decomposes problems into steps guided by process reward models (PRMs). Though effective, these methods scale poorly due to excessive sampling and manual search design. For instance, MCTS requires iterating through thousands of potential steps, making it computationally prohibitive for real-world applications. Meanwhile, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) methods like Buffer of Thought (BoT) leverage stored problem-solving templates but struggle to integrate multiple templates adaptively, limiting their utility in complex scenarios.ReasonFlux introduces a structured framework that combines a curated library of high-level thought templates with hierarchical reinforcement learning (HRL) to dynamically plan and refine reasoning paths. Instead of optimizing individual steps, it focuses on configuring optimal template trajectoriessequences of abstract problem-solving strategies retrieved from a structured knowledge base. This approach simplifies the search space and enables efficient adaptation to sub-problems. The framework consists of three main components:Structured Template Library: The research team constructed a library of 500 thought templates, each encapsulating a problem-solving strategy (e.g., Trigonometric Substitution for Integral Optimization). Templates include metadatanames, tags, descriptions, and application stepsenabling efficient retrieval. For example, a template tagged Irrational Function Optimization might guide an LLM to apply specific algebraic substitutions.Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning:Structure-Based Fine-Tuning: A base LLM (e.g., Qwen2.5-32B) is fine-tuned to associate template metadata with their functional descriptions, ensuring it understands when and how to apply each template.Template Trajectory Optimization: Using preference learning, the model learns to rank template sequences by their effectiveness. For a given problem, multiple trajectories are sampled, and their success rates on similar problems determine rewards. This trains the model to prioritize high-reward sequences, refining its planning capability.Adaptive Inference Scaling: During inference, ReasonFlux acts as a navigator, analyzing the problem to retrieve relevant templates and dynamically adjusting the trajectory based on intermediate results. For instance, if a step involving Polynomial Factorization yields unexpected constraints, the system might pivot to a Constraint Propagation template. This iterative interplay between planning and execution mirrors human problem-solving, where partial solutions inform subsequent steps.ReasonFlux was evaluated on competition-level benchmarks like MATH, AIME, and OlympiadBench, outperforming both frontier models (GPT-4o, Claude) and specialized open-source models (DeepSeek-V3, Mathstral). Key results include:91.2% accuracy on MATH, surpassing OpenAIs o1-preview by 6.7%.56.7% on AIME 2024, exceeding DeepSeek-V3 by 45% and matching o1-mini.63.3% on OlympiadBench, a 14% improvement over prior methods. Moreover, the structured template library demonstrated strong generalization: when applied to variant problems, it boosted smaller models (e.g., 7B parameters) to outperform larger counterparts using direct reasoning. Additionally, ReasonFlux achieved a superior exploration-exploitation balance, requiring 40% fewer computational steps than MCTS and Best-of-N on complex tasks (Figure 5).In summary, ReasonFlux redefines how LLMs approach complex reasoning by decoupling high-level strategy from step-by-step execution. Its hierarchical template system reduces computational overhead while improving accuracy and adaptability, addressing critical gaps in existing methods. By leveraging structured knowledge and dynamic planning, the framework sets a new standard for efficient, scalable reasoningproving that smaller, well-guided models can rival even the largest frontier systems. This innovation opens avenues for deploying advanced reasoning in resource-constrained environments, from education to automated code generation.Check outthePaper. All credit for this research goes to the researchers of this project. • How to Play the Monster Hunter Games in Order
    www.ign.com
A year removed from its 20th anniversary, Capcoms monster-hunting franchise returns in 2025 with Monster Hunter Wilds. The prolific series has lived through several generations of home and portable consoles, reaching new peaks with 2018s Monster Hunter World and 2021s Monster Hunter Rise the series best-selling games to date and Capcoms two best-selling games of all time. With Monster Hunter Wilds out on February 28, were looking back on the franchise's history with a list of the series most important games, ordered chronologically by release date. How Many Monster Hunter Games Are There? There are upwards of 25 Monster Hunter games when considering all base games, spinoffs, mobile entries, and enhanced versions. However, for this list, we've compiled the 12 most relevant Monster Hunter games. Our list excludes mobile- and arcade-exclusive games (Monster Hunter i, Monster Hunter Spirits, etc.); previously shuttered MMOs (Monster Hunter Frontier, Monster Hunter Online); and the FromSoftware-developed, Japan-exclusive, Animal Crossing-like game Monster Hunter Diary: Poka Poka Airou Village.Every IGN Monster Hunter ReviewWhich Monster Hunter Game Should You Play First? There is no continuous story throughout the Monster Hunter franchise, so you can take your pick of which game to start with. If youre jumping into the world of Monster Hunter in 2025, you might want to wait and and see reactions to the latest game, Monster Hunter Wilds, which will be released on February 28. If youre eager to try the series before investing in Wilds, we recommend Monster Hunter World or Monster Hunter Rise. World should appeal more to those who value exploration and immersion; Rise is better suited for those who put a higher value on speed and fluidity.Out February 28Monster Hunter Wilds - Standard EditionSee it at AmazonEvery Monster Hunter Game in Release OrderMonster Hunter (2004)Monster Hunter, alongside Auto Modellista and Resident Evil: Outbreak, was developed as part of a three-game plan to explore the market potential of the PS2s online network, Capcoms Ryozo Tsujimoto told Eurogamer in 2014.The first Monster Hunter laid the foundation for the franchise, introducing many of the series defining systems. Players, on their own or with others online, are given quests to hunt monsters, after which they use materials harvested from the world and the monsters remains to craft and upgrade weapons and armor before embarking to fight, well, stronger monsters. An expanded version called Monster Hunter G was released exclusively in Japan the following year.Related GuidesMonster Hunter Freedom (2005)The series found its home on portable consoles in 2005 with Monster Hunter Freedom, an enhanced port of Monster Hunter G tuned for single-player play on the PSP. This first portable entry in the franchise sold over a million copies, according to Capcom, beginning a trend in which Monster Hunters portable versions handily outsold its home console counterparts a trend that held until the breakout success of Monster Hunter World in 2018.Monster Hunter 2 (2006)Capcom returned to home console for the series second proper entry, Monster Hunter 2 (aka Monster Hunter Dos). It was released exclusively in Japan for PS2. Monster Hunter 2 introduced a day-night cycle and gems, further enhancing your opportunities for weapons and armor customization.Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (2007)The second handheld game in the series, Monster Hunter Freedom 2 again took the core of its home console counterpart (MH2) and built upon it with new content and a single-player focus. The game was expanded further in 2008s Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, which added new monsters, missions, maps, and the ability to have a Felyne fighter join the player in battle.Related GuidesMonster Hunter 3 (2009)Monster Hunter 3 (aka Monster Hunter Tri) debuted in Japan in 2009, before being released internationally in 2010. The third mainline MH game was initially in development for the PS3, though it would eventually be released as a Wii exclusive. In addition to new monsters, weapons, and locations, Monster Hunter 3 introduced the series short-lived underwater combat. It later came to Wii U and 3DS as Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate with new monsters, a reworked single-player experience, updated graphics, and a new multiplayer area.Monster Hunter TriCapcom Production Studio 1Aug 1, 2009WiiRelated GuidesMonster Hunter Portable 3rd (2010)Like the two mainline entries before it, Monster Hunter 3 was tweaked and ported to PSP as Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. Unlike the two portable versions before it, this game also got a console release on PS3 as Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD Ver.Despite never being released in the West, Monster Hunter Portable 3rd is the best-selling game among Capcoms handheld-exclusive Monster Hunters with 4.9 million copies sold.Monster Hunter 4 (2013)Monster Hunter 4 was originally released exclusively for 3DS, exclusively in Japan. Only the enhanced edition, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (Monster Hunter 4G in Japan), was released globally as a launch game for New Nintendo 3DS. This generation of Monster Hunter games most notably improved traversal by pairing increased verticality with more fluid player movement. It also improved the single-player experience with a deeper story and more NPCs.Monster Hunter 4CapcomJun 30, 2013Nintendo 3DSRelated GuidesMonster Hunter Generations (2015)Capcom followed up MH4 with Monster Hunter Generations (Monster Hunter X in Japan), another installment released exclusively for 3DS. Generations had, as our review stated, the appeal of a greatest hits album, blending old and (at the time) new mechanics from the series then-10-year history. Most notably, Generations featured new wrinkles to customization and combat through Hunting Styles and Arts.Generations later received an enhanced edition, known as Monster Hunter Generations XX in Japan and Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate internationally. It was the first Monster Hunter game released on Nintendo Switch.Related GuidesMonster Hunter Stories (2016)Monster Hunter Stories is a spinoff that takes the action series into the world of RPGs. True to the genre, Stories trades in the real-time action of the mainline games for a turn-based combat system and puts more emphasis on story and exploration. It was originally released for 3DS, though its since come to PS4, Switch, PC, and mobile.Monster Hunter StoriesCapcomOct 8, 2016Related GuidesMonster Hunter World (2018)Monster Hunter World is, to date, the series high point from both a critical and commercial perspective. With 27 million copies sold, its the series (and Capcoms) best-selling game, and with a Metascore of 90, its also the series best-reviewed game. With World, Capcom moved the primary development of Monster Hunter back to home consoles, specifically PS4 and Xbox One. For the first time, it made a concerted effort to reach a wider Western audience by moving to a more seamless open-world design, reducing the learning curve of the series intricate systems, fully supporting online play with global servers, and releasing simultaneously across all regions.A massive expansion, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, was released the following year. Similar to the Ultimate versions of past games, Iceborne added new monsters and mechanics to the base game, as well as an all-new story that rivals the size of the campaign in World.Monster Hunter WorldCapcomJan 26, 2018Related GuidesMonster Hunter Rise (2021)Monster Hunter Rise is the series second best-performing game, ranking only behind World in terms of sales and Metascore. As the subtitle World denotes the previous games more global approach, Rise indicates a greater focus on verticality, a design decision supported by the introduction of the Wirebug, a new mechanic that enabled wall-climbing and overall more fluid traversal.Rise builds off of the previous Switch entry, Generations Ultimate, as much as it does World, given World and Rise were, for a time, being developed in tandem. As stated in our review, much of the streamlining World did has been carried forward in Rise, while other things like separate Village and Hub questlines for single- and multiplayer and the ability to tweak a weapons playstyle a bit return from older Monster Hunter games.Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak was released the following year. The expansion includes a new storyline, monsters, and locations.Monster Hunter RiseCapcomMar 25, 2021Related GuidesMonster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin (2021)Capcom followed Rise with Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, a sequel to the 2016 RPG. Co-developed by Marvelous Inc. (Story of Seasons), Wings of Ruin leans into tried-and-true JRPG systems like turn-based combat, character customization, and an emphasis on story. Stories 2 again lets you fight alongside monsters (aka Monsties) instead of strictly hunting them, creating a party system that should be familiar to anyone whos played a Pokemon RPG.Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of RuinCapcomJul 9, 2021Related GuidesMonster Hunter Wilds (2025)Monster Hunter Wilds will be the latest game in the series when its released on February 28 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Wilds is a mainline Monster Hunter game that builds on the design principles of World and Rise. It boasts dynamic, ever-changing environments and the series most evolved action and improved immersion, according to Capcom. As noted in our 2024 Monster Hunter Wilds preview, its shaping up to be a Monster Hunter that embraces the parts of Rise that made it so much more inviting but also doesnt shy away from the larger scale and spectacle that helped make World the more enduring entry.Monster Hunter WildsCapcomFeb 28, 2025Related GuidesUpcoming Monster Hunter GamesPlayNext up for the franchise is the aforementioned Monster Hunter Wilds, due out February 28 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. • BenQ MA270U Review: Pairs nicely with the new Mac mini without breaking the bank
    9to5mac.com
For me, one of the biggest issues with making the switch from a MacBook to a Mac mini was the display aspect of it. MacBooks all have fairly great displays, especially on the MacBook Pro. However, finding a good display that pairs nicely with a Mac desktop always feels like a little bit of a challenge. You either have to go with Apples expensive options, or compromise significantly on the experience with a third party. Some common compromises include poor brightness, a lack of USB-C, or a lack of macOS integration. While the BenQ MA270U certainly isnt a Studio Display replacement, it performs excellently in all of the qualities that matter to me.What stands out to meFirst things first, this display comes in at $459. Thats cheaper than the Mac mini, even if youre buying one from the education store. At that price point, it packs an aluminum stand, 400 nits of brightness, USB-C connectivity, and a built in USB hub. Its a 4K 27 display, and also offers 2 HDMI ports for plugging in a game console or anything else you might want on your desk. The built in USB hub is a great perk. The monitor offers two USB-A ports and an additional USB-C port, allowing you to connect up to 3 USB connections to your Mac through one cable. It also provides 90W of power via USB-C, whichll recharge your MacBook quickly if youre using one. The USB-A ports come in clutch as well, since the M4 Mac mini doesnt include them. Some will point out that 400 nits of brightness is a little sub-par, which is certainly true compared to Apples displays. However, this isnt a super big deal for indoor usage. Many monitors in this class only have 250-350 nits, so Im more than happy to have 400 at this price tag.The aluminum stand is also a nice touch, making the MA270U feel a decent bit premium.Lastly, theres Display Pilot 2. This companion app allows you to control the brightness and volume of the display from within macOS. This is a rare feature on non-Apple displays, and normally you have to regularly fidget with physical buttons on the display. You wont have to do that on the MA270U, and Im happy to say that. You also dont need to use the companion app necessarily, keyboard controls also work for brightness and volume control.Spec rundown27-inch 4K panel (38402160) with up to 400 nits of brightness, 60Hz95% DCI-P3 and 99% sRGB color gamutVESA DisplayHDR 400 supportDual 3W treVolo speakersNano Matte PanelTUV certificationAdjustable stand with 115mm of height adjust, 15 degrees of tilt/swivel, and 90 degrees of pivot Wrap upOverall, the MA270U a great balance of everything important to me: decent brightness, USB-C connectivity, and a decent price point. At $459, its hard to go wrong with this display. Theres also a 32-inch variant available for $599.If youre a fellow Mac mini user searching for a nice external display to pair with it, Id highly recommend this monitor. The aforementioned companion app also has a feature to match its color profile with Apples, allowing for a close-to-stock appearance.Buy BenQ MA270U (27-inch):Buy BenQ MA320U (32-inch):Follow Michael:X/Twitter,Bluesky,InstagramAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed.
